"Sure, Cook Out is a large chain with locations across the South, but it was founded in North Carolina and no Carolina road trip would be complete with a Cook Out platter and a shake. Burgers, barbecue, chicken, hot dogs, and more are available alongside sides like onion rings, hush puppies, coleslaw, mac ‘n cheese, and fries. The shakes alone are worth a stop, with dozens of different options like banana pineapple, chocolate chip cherry, and peanut butter fudge. In fact, the shakes have such a following that Joe Biden stopped by a Durham Cook Out with his granddaughter during the 2020 campaign." - Matt Lardie, Erin Perkins

Ordered a plain burger and the middle was completely RAW!!! 3/27/25 around 9:15-9:25pm

Google
A shame that I wasted $32 here. I don't know what they had going on tonight but both burgers wrong and somehow extremely salty like top fell off a salt shaker salty. Fries weren't completely cooked with enough seasoning to coat 8 orders of fries. Nuggets were hard and cold, no sauce after being told twice it was in the bag. Employee at the window was doing their job but the cook needs to be permanently off the grill and be moved to something more their speed. Problems at this location all the time at night but this definitely tops the cake for me because how can so much go wrong with one order. CHECK YOUR FOOD BEFORE YOU LEAVE! Everything too expensive to be wasting money on food that's not even edible.

Google
The most difficult drive thru in town. Then when you finally get through the crazy maze... apparently they can't understand anything thru the speaker. Left...again...with no food. I'm done with this restaurant...every location in the state...they just don't care about customer service at all.

Google
Now I’ve never left a review but why did I pull a straight hair (my hairs curly) out of my chicken wrap and then my onion ring had this gooey texture on the inside idk if it wasn’t cooked enough but that’s disgusting 0/10 👎

Donovan Rivas

Google
It’s my first time here. Paid almost 6 bucks for a bbq burguer. The meat was burned out. The overall presentation of the burguer was overall disappointing. For the price, really kinda makes you mad. Service was quick which was good, but it was still bad by the couple people who took my order and took my payment. A lot to work on and customer service is for sure one of those things… but yeah, the burguer too small. Wouldn’t waste my time here anymore.

David Ryan

Google
I ordered a double cheeseburger which definitely had a charred bbq taste and was just what I was in the mood for. This was my first time exploring a Cook Out location, so I was surprised it was a drive thru only, but more odd was there were two lines to put your order and the pick up windows crossed each other which was confusing.

LaDebra Ross

Google
Poor customer service. My wait was over 10 minutes. My food was wrong. I took it back and they literally added to the original burger and gave me the poorly made sandwich which with condiments that I didn't request. Definitely glad I'm not allergic to any of the items.

Tammy Britt

Google
It’s so frustrating to sit in a long line only to get to the speaker and see a sign “cash only” . You can’t just drive off you’re stuck until everyone moves. It would be great if customers could see this before getting trapped in a line. I don’t usually complain but this happens a lot in lumberton it’s cash only or cash only in the line you’re in and you would have to drive all the way around to get into the card line.

Yelp
All we had was their shakes. So thick & creamy you need a spoon to eat them. There are I believe 44 different combinations of shakes you can have. Me I'm a double chocolate kind of guy. Forgot what flavor my wife had. We will be back on our trip up north.

James M.

Yelp
Uh... They royally messed up the order. My friend and I thought the order was quite straightforward. Somehow, it was a collosal disaster. It's not like the food is good. It's barely passable actually. The fires were fine but the quality of the burgers were.... Disappointing to say the least. At the very least, I can say my stomach was full and my wallet didn't take much damage. In other words: cheap food, cheap service.

Lamont D.

Yelp
The employees were rude. The drive-through window was unresponsive. They mixed up the size of my drink, and was upset with me because I wanted to correct it. Everyone appeared to hate their job. I started every sentence with a salutation, and none were returned.

Darryl L.

Yelp
The cashier was very professional and nice. We had a fairly big order and she was able to make sure that we received all of our items. The food was good and hot. Great job guys!

Glenn R.

Yelp
The Big Double and fries was delicious. The person who took my order was very polite and professional.

Kami H.

Yelp
Not how we remember cook out. Food was not good. Made us sad. Not sure what is was - it lacked flavor, it wasn't cooked well - hush puppies were like small flavorless balls - not the nice sized properly cooked flavorful hush puppies that deliver moist softness with the perfect crunch on the outside!

Yelp
Drive thru joint that offers charcoal grilled hand formed burgers, hot dogs and chix sandwiches. You can order a la carte or a tray. The tray gives you one sandwich, your choice of 2 sides and a huge drink-- good deal ! They also have awesome handmade shakes !! The menu selection is big. One tip, the regular burger actually has more meat than than the double burger. The doubler burger uses 2 smaller patties. I ordered the regular burger , fries, onion rings a huge tea with lemon. I didnt get the lemon, :(. The burger is good size maybe 6 ounce and is perfectly grilled. It tastes just a burger off the backyard grill - hence cookout. Yummmm. Juicy and delicious. The onions rings are well breaded and crisp, good flavor. The fries are awesome, handcut and using their own special seasoning!! The lines get long, but they have this down and they move fast. Check this place out next time you are craving good cookout burgers or hot dogs.

Yelp
I loooove Cook Out! I am writing this review based upon the fact that they are a FAST FOOD place. I'm not expecting The Cheesecake Factory. I'm giving them five stars bears on what they offer. It drives me crazy when people review a fast food place and expect fine dining. But if you want to know about eating at Cook Out -- here you go.... There are a few things to know: -Their speaker systems suck. I've never been to a Cook Out where I can hear the server clearly. -They are in a hurry - but you can ask questions and make sure your order is right. But I suggest you figure out what you want before you get to the ordering speaker. -Their shakes are AMAZING. Enough said. -The "Trays" work like this: order what main food you want - then you get two sides. They aren't huge sides - so you can always double up on one side instead of getting two separate sides. Just say "double fries". -The people working there are generally really friendly and chill. Probably their best asset. Please be kind to them. -Their corn dogs are my favorite. Love the onion rings too. -Ask them to repeat your order before driving to the payment window. Since their speaker system sucks, it's easy for them to misunderstand something you've ordered. -Finally, Cook Out is WAY more economical than Hardee's or McDonalds and in my opinion they've got much better food. Enjoy!

Yelp
Bad Decision! Worst BBQ Pork I've ever had! It was mushy and weirdly seasoned. Thankfully the fries were okay (awfully salty) and the hush puppies were good. In addition I had to ask to get a bag for my order in the drive through and caught attitude from the teenager waiting on me!

Jeremiah M.

Yelp
Rude and disrespectful at the walkup window made me wait 20 minutes on purpose. Fore my blueberry shake

Julie Ying X.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday night with a friend. I've been to other locations in NC. We went to the drive thru. I ordered a BBQ pork sandwich with cole slaw. My friend ordered the cajun chicken filet sandwich. The BBQ sandwich was so soggy even though I ate it right away. The pork was bland and just not very appealing. I've had better at other locations. My friend's chicken sandwich was good. Also, none of the staff were wearing masks (I came during COVID-19). I think I'll stick to other locations unless I have to go to this location.

Rosemary L.

Yelp
My husband is travelling South on I=95 and stopped in to get lunch. he ordered a burger, fries and chile, but they gave him a barbecue sandwich instead of the burger. He didn't notice it until he left and was back on the highway. How does someone mistake an order for a small burger with mustard, ketchup, lettuce and onions for a barbeque sandwich??? Won't be stopping at this Cookout again!! I would recommend stopping elsewhere!!

Franklin R.

Yelp
This place has the best milkshakes but the hotdogs need some work. Actually I received a little hot dog with my onions. It was ridiculous.

Ibrahim A.

Yelp
Man that's disgusting ordered 2 chicken quesadillas and an order of Cajun fry instead I got 2 pieces of cheese lump and scraps of chicken the saddest part is I woulda been okay with the bad quesadillas if the Cajun fries where good but even the fries where bad the main reason I come to cook is the fries and they had a piece of hair in them almost vomited feeling the long piece of hair in my mouth I left it in the fries for you guys to see

Emilee L.

Yelp
We are so glad we stopped here on our long road trip! The employee taking our order was so kind and efficient. All of our food came out piping hot and delicious, especially the tenders and corn dogs. For a $5 lunch, it can't be beat!

Jenita M.

Yelp
Somewhat busy night but I was able to pull in and make my order quickly. There's two billboards for drive thru and one up front for standing to order. I got the cheesecake milkshake that never disappoints but with walnuts. Wasn't sure if it would have walnut flavored milkshake mix with or without but I think it was just the nuts added. There were plenty at the bottom but it was good anyway.

Patrice T.

Yelp
They use way too much peanut butter in their peanut butter fudge milkshake. They are extremely slow and the staff is kinda rude. I felt rushed.

D. Michelle D.

Yelp
Greasy and gross. This location was rude and had a piss poor attitude during the ordering process, just to get my order wrong with no remorse. Since I was on my way to SC, it was good I didn't make the highway before finding out they screwed my order up. I ended up returning the entire meal because the sloppy presentation of the reheated (not fresh) burger...so hot the foil wrapper was burning hot...for what had to be cash since they can't credit your card if used as the form of payment. I will never stop at this Lumberton location ever again--ever.

Ken W.

Yelp
Well...everything was good until I found a fingernail - a painted acrylic fingernail - in my milkshake!!! Someone please tell me how you lose a fingernail in a milkshake?!!!! It was pretty disgusting, and as such, I could never recommend going here!!

Ian S.

Yelp
Options for sides: like freakin affinity, gosh. Hours: ALL OF THEM. That's key for a place like this. Service: Saltier than the fries! You better know what you want before you get there. I liked the burger slightly more than I expected to - it's along the lines of Checkers/Rally but cheaper. So many kinds of shakes. They're thick, they're decent. Helpful expectation-lowering fact of life: Do not expect outstanding BBQ if you can't smell the smoke when you get there.

Kathryn W.

Yelp
Great service and hot food! The lady at the window was so kind. Big fan of the tenders and corn dogs!

Ray T.

Yelp
Scrawny tasteless burgers with minuscule amount of toppings. Not the Cookout I've been used to. If you're starving to death it's ok, otherwise go somewhere else.

Erik R.

Yelp
If your hungry go somewhere else. Cause besides under staff and almost unsupervised employees. Quality of the food? Mc Donalds has better tasting food... avoid if need be.

Samantha K.

Yelp
Was driving from NY to FL and needed something good and filling along the way. Stopped for gas and stumbled upon this place and I'm glad I did. Cheap, big portions, and pretty tasty for drive thru food. For about $5 I got a small combo with a cheeseburger, milkshake, onion rings, and slaw. First--what a freaking deal! The cheeseburger was tasty--loaded up with grilled onions, cheddar, and bacon. It was a bit greasy, but to be honest, that's exactly what I was in the mood for. Onion rings were crispy and good. Slaw was basic but no complaints. Milkshake was amaaazing! Only issue I had was that it was near impossible to understand the drive thru speaker and I had to pray that nothing got messed up (it didn't). The next time I do this trip I very well may go out of my way to stop there again.

Farrah M.

Yelp
2x I've come here after a long flight and drive and sharanda asked me what I want on my burger twice and must have said "f it you'll get what I give you because 2x I've been here my order was wrong! Burgers are good though just check your food before you leave if you can.

Anthony C.

Yelp
Last night (5/28/19) was by far my worst experience with the night shift here. I get there right after work and I get to the speaker and no one says anything for over 5 minutes!! 3 cars on the left side had already got their food so I pulled up to see if I could get somebody. Before I pull to the window I overhear the attendant speaking to the truck that was behind me!! So, I pull up to the window then nobody is at the window for about 2-3 more minutes. She gets to the window and I explain I've been waiting almost 10 mins just to order something and she looked at me and said "it's this b***s*** a** speaker." Like whaaattt!? She didn't apologize not once and that's what really irritated me. I just think it's crazy how the speaker worked fine before I got to it and after I pulled

Megan R.

Yelp
Because I was passing this location as I drove down I-95, I'm not sure if I got standard service or if the person in front of me (drive thru) was the most complicated order-er in SE NC. My "quick" stop took no less than 15 minutes and all I ordered was a milkshake and a sweet tea. But, when I pulled up to the window (finally), my order was ready. The gal working the window didn't seem overly friendly, but I think we might have both been annoyed at the previous customer, so it didn't really matter. That said, Cookout has 40 different types of milkshakes and they are consistently good at every Cookout I've been to. I'm meh on the food since it's pretty greasy fried fare, but it's great hangover/post night out food. It helps that they are open until practically dawn on Fri/Sat nights.

Michael S.

Yelp
If I could give this spot a Zero Star I would crappiest service I have ever had at a Cookout... never will come back to this dump at this location.

Gym D.

Yelp
Their mic was broken and they told us to go to the window and yelled at us when we did. Didn't take our order so we couldn't eat there

Amber B.

Yelp
Shakes are always good. Food decently priced. It depends on who is cooking if the food is going to be good. I guess you just have to take that chance.

Angela R.

Yelp
It's a fast food burger... and they don't put any catsup or mayo on it.... so dry. I ordered the double burger cheddar style. Sounds good and big right! Wrong.. it's kind of like a small quarter pounder.. so there's that. The kids liked the chicken but it didn't have anything in it.. just grilled chicken so ya.. bug they were fast and friendly... and we aren't hungry anymore.. otherwise it would be a one star.

John M.

Yelp
This place has the best shakes around in my opinion. My family and I go here every time we want to get our shakes. Best ever

Mach S.

Yelp
Great grilled burgers for a fantastic price. You can buy a ton of food for under $20 and walk away stuffed. I got the huge (1/2 lbs) burger for $2.79 (plus 10 cents for tomato) (See picture). I instantly knew this isn't a McDonalds, 5 Guys, Sonic or Wendy's burger, since those burger patties are fried. Cook Out offers two thick patties grilled (Huge burger), as the name implies, on a flame grill. Can you believe the price? Where can you get a burger that cheap and tastes this good? My wife got a Footlong hot dog for $1.99. She loved it, but didn't care for the coleslaw. She said it wasn't creamy. (See picture). We both got shakes for $2.39 each. She got a Strawberry cheese cake, that had actual cheesecake in the shake. No faux cake or dough. One of the downsides to this Cook Out restaurant was that it does not have a sitting area to eat, but I did eat at a Cook Out in Wilson, NC that did have a sit-down area, but it was small and hard to get an available seat. This Cook Out does have duel Drives-In lanes, which does mainly drive-thru business, since there is no place to sit. Another downside is the walk-up, order window is right next to a drive-thru window, so you have to be careful you don't get hit by a car pulling up to or away from the drive-thru window. It is a poorly designed walk-up window area. This Cook Out beats the fast-food chains by price and taste. I wish there was one in my area!

Douglas W.

Yelp
I saw the sign miles away and knew that I wanted to stop at a place that wasn't the everyday place. I like how easy it was to get too and the food got to me fast. The best thing about traveling is when you hop off the highway, grab a bite and are able to get back on the road with hot food and your order being correct. Oh and my Peach Cobbler shake did not disappoint, the other places don't have that kind of variety.

Andrew C.

Yelp
Great late night spot. Picked me up some quesadillas with some of them hush puppies. Dang that was good.. Or was it the fact that it was 3am and we we're starving! Either way the drive through chick was cool. Mmmm that accent, you go girl.

Maegan R.

Yelp
Favorite fast food when I need some extra help hitting my macros. Chicken quesadillas are a regular for me. The wait time isn't horrible for the number of customer's.

Jessica B.

Yelp
First time checking out a Cook Out. I only purchased a milkshake. I will say, it was one of THE BEST milkshakes I have ever had.

Alan S.

Yelp
Road trip pit stop. Cookout is littered all over the Carolinas. Drive thru seems to be the only ordering option. Unlike Sonics which give you the park, order, eat in car format. Cookout is just a straight drive thru with optional walk up window ordering. Awesome milkshake, good quality ice cream, plenty of varieties. Burgers, hotdogs and BBQ is nothing spectacular, but not bad either. Solid quick-fix burger/milkshake kind of place.

Antonio H.

Yelp
What's Cookout? I guess I'm about to find out. I drive up and see the menu is easy to read. The layout of importance is from the burgers at top descending to hotdogs and other side menu items. Our order was taking and read back with accuracy. I was confused about the window placement for me to make my payment. I like drove passed it, noticed the employee and backed up, pulled forward, backed up again. Not close enough yet. Pulled forward. Almost..yes, close enough. Payment taken, food received and now time to passed the food out. With 5 different burgers ordered and all of them wrapped in aluminum foil and no markings. I had a task checking for which burger was what. Now that I got that out of the way. I bite into the nice flavored charred broiled burger with cheddar, onions, mayo, and the soft bun. Pretty good! I don't know; this place or its food, just doesn't woo me past indifference.

Honeygirl R.

Yelp
This was a road trip pit stop. Ordered through drive thru and tried to make it easy for the cashier by ordering 4 of the exact same thing (Cookout Trays), only to be rudely told by him that I could not do that. I had to order each separately. Say what?! I won't be making this pit stop again. I can go to other places and not get attitude.

Jay O.

Yelp
This place has awesome food. Drive thru is fast like NASCAR. The young lady taking my order was oh so patient and made ordering so easy. I ordered 3 "trays" and was amazed at how much food there was and how TASTY it was!!! Telling what I want on a burger instead of deciphering what's on it, then eliminating toppings makes their process so easy!! Added plus- they serve Cheerwine!!!!!

Herb M.

Yelp
After having to repeat my order three times to someone who was chewing gum and talking my burger was wrong, my fries were not hot and the drink wasn't a Diet like I ordered. I called the place 4x but got no answer this was 10-9 at630 pm.

Sandy B.

Yelp
Made this discovery via Yelp, thanks Yelp! Family of four ordered four cook out trays and upgraded to shakes and it was less than 20 bucks. Had burger and server helped us navigate asking if we wanted lettuce, tomato, onion etc. Choice of two sides. Between us we had hush puppies, onion rings, fries, Coke slaw and quesadilla. Sides weren't huge so it wasn't overwhelming but totally satisfying. The spicy chicken was juicy and flavorful. Double burger was filling. Cheeseburgers were juicy and real. Speciality shakes with huge selection. The shakes were thick thick thx ok. Need spoon, so if you are thirsty get a water too. Friendly staff even checked on us in our booth.

Timothy R.

Yelp
We are from FL on our way to Virginia & have 2 girls. Took a chance and stopped by to grab something quick to eat here. We had no idea what to order & the young lady taking orders through drive through was unbelievably patient with us. She even took the time to explain how their meals work & the different things/sides you can get. The service was super quick, got our food almost right away!!! As far as the food goes, they were very good quality & tasted so good! For the quality & super cheap price, everything was excellent!!! Be sure to order their shakes!!! I got banana pineapple & it was amazing & my 7 year old somewhat picky eater wanted to keep it for herself!!!! What a great find while traveling!!!!

Brittany H.

Yelp
Best food for the value, can choose a tray (burger, chicken strips, chicken sandwich, etc) and two sides with a huge tea for under $5.

Amanda P.

Yelp
Perhaps the worst barbecue I've ever tasted. Maybe the burgers and dogs are better, but I figured I'm in the south, how can BBQ go wrong? It went very wrong here. The fries were good...but I don't really eat fries. I eat a few, but damn. Quantity isn't an issue. Nor is price -- which should have been a clue. 10lbs of whatever for under $5 can't ever be good.

Tosha B.

Yelp
Backstory: The hubby and I are road trippin to NC to visit family and decided to stop here for a quick snack. We saw this place last year after a status quo Taco Bell experience and said that we would stop by next year. Well, today was the day! It was busy, but quick. I took a gamble and got the original grilled chicken sandwich without mayo and M&M milkshake (they are known for their shakes, so I had to indulge). I say gamble because drive thru grilled chicken sandwiches are usually very salty, not tasty with a weird texture to boot. Why take the gamble? I already had chick fil a earlier and 2 fried meals in a row is a little much for me. The hubby got the Cajun grilled chicken with the chocolate chip mint milkshake. The gamble paid off! The chicken sandwiches were both very flavorful with good texture and not too salty, the hubby really enjoyed the Cajun one. The milkshakes were also pretty amaze! This will be our stop any time we roll through Lumberton!

Kay M.

Yelp
The Carolina Style burger with slaw and chili is amazing. Unfortunately the French fries were undercooked and soggy.

Raul A.

Yelp
Great burgers and milkshakes. Always a great spot for a quick bite!

Candra P.

Yelp
Just the thought of writing this review made hungry and I started to hum. Seriously, I love this place. We do not have them in my area but my goodness I've been enough times that you would think there is one across from my house. Oh thank you Mr Cookout for allowing me to have cookout food year round, while traveling, on the go, in my car, while singing my favorite tunes. You make me happy. I love the Cajun chicken sandwich. So delish, always hot and fresh. I also love their chopped BBQ sandwich. I usually am torn between the two as to which sandwich I will have. Now, where else can I order a combo that includes chicken nuggets, chicken quesidilla or wraps as a side item, only cookout. Oh once again, I say, you make me happy. Then to top it off, you allow me to switch my drink from a soda to a fancy shake for just a little bit more in price. Oh yea, you make me so happy. I have tried several shakes but my favorite so far as been the cherry cheesecake. My goodness, to try and get a cheesecake slice through your straw takes skill but doggone it I think i figured it out because every sip that was taken from that straw seemed like an actual slice came through. Oh how you make me happy Mr Cookout!!
