Montreal’s Best Restaurants for Gluten-Free Eaters | Eater Montreal

"The sweets at this Old Montreal patisserie are proof that dietary restrictions do not necessitate eating “diet” food. Celiac-friendly Cookie Stéfanie specializes in cookies, cupcakes, and cakes. It’s all gluten-free, and some items are also vegan, enabling sugar rushes for a wide range of eaters. Cookie Stéfanie is closed on weekends, but is otherwise available for both pickup and delivery." - Holly Tousignant

There's a great assortment of things to try at this store and everything is better than the last! Tons of options for dessert, the coffee that they do is great, the savory sandwiches, and they also have options like salads if you just want to have a light meal instead. A great one stop shop if you're in a rush and also a cozy place to get some work done if you prefer.

Google
I picked a nice selection of cookies; overall they had a nice consistency and flavor. If they were on the "trying to be healthier" side (meaning- less ingredients/sugar alternatives/etc) these would be great, but just as a simple gluten free cookie- I liked it but didnt love it.

Google
They absolutely do live up to their name. The second you enter, your soul is filled with the most delicious spelling cookies, and you just know that this place is going to have great cookies at least. And even though they do not have a huge collection, they do serve small cookies which is great for a quick bite. And then the coffee blows you away again, and it just feels like it’s a perfect flavour combination with your cookie. I asked for the bestsellers, which were maple chocolate and chocolate chip. They were not too sweet, and each part of the cookie could be tasted individually. Incredible!

Google
Amazing gluten free treats! Had a few different items from this bakery and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of the baked goods. Highly recommend!!

Google
Very good. We parked across the street in 15 hotel parking and came in. We had the blueberry crumb bar and a tuna open faced sandwich. The bread was good and tuna. The highlight was our late snack. The Jean Louis cake. $5.50 and worth it!

Google
Lovely spot and yummy gluten free items! My daughter doesn’t eat gluten and I’m so glad we found this spot while visiting Montreal. She got the sweet potato and corn flour soup, grilled cheese on gluten free bread and a gluten free muffin. She said it was all delicious! She had so many gluten free options. They do have some regular items as well. I thought the prices were reasonable too - an affordable lunch.

Google
Finding a GF pastry shop is hard enough, but to find one that everything tastes amazing is stellar! Staff was sweet and pastries lovely.

Google
Probably the best gluten free goodies I’ve ever had. Typically gluten free muffins and breads taste like sadness and despair. I’m so impressed and so happy that there’s a place I can go to have delicious gluten free food! Definitely don’t skip out on this spot, even if you do eat gluten (they have regular items as well - and it’s all clearly labeled).

Yelp
Cookie Stefanie was quaint and very very clean. There was a wide variety of baked items that all looked delicious! The selection of soup and the few sandwiches were very tempting. On a chilly rainy day a gooey grilled cheese would hit the spot. Service was slow but there were only 2 staff that day. The front counter person was helpful and polite. Their attentiveness to the customer slows down service but for a very good reason. So, don't rush. Take a long look into the pastry case, smell the air that is laced with a sugary sweet aroma that is partnered with the bold smell of coffee. When it's your turn to be waited on they'll give you their 100% attention too.

Yelp
Visited a Thursday AM for breakfast and had the GF grilled cheese and a GF Banana Bread. The Banana Bread was good, moist and a good texture for GF. The grilled cheese I was a little let down on as I was hoping would be a little more gourmet, but still nice they had this as a GF option. The other GF pastries looked tasty and I would reccomend this place as a good grab and go if you are GF and in town. The only misleading thing was that not all pastries on the shelf were GF and they were not marked - so for example there were croissants on the shelf near the GF pastries (separate plate, but same display) that were not marked as non-GF. They also had Non-GF grilled cheese that they said they made on a separate panini press. Overall reccomend as great pop-in spot if you are in a hurry and need something GF!

Yelp
I had their date bar. I love date bars and theirs was just okay. The bar to date ratio was heavy on the bar side. I think if it's going to be called a date bar it should have lots of date filling. This one didn't. But it was made with quality.

Yelp
For a gluten free bakery, this place isn't tha bad! While visiting Montreal, we visited many local cafes which served glutinous pastries. My 8 year old sister, who suffers from celiac disease felt very left out whenever we visited one of these shops and we all felt bad. Even my dad, who normally follows a gluten free diet, broke his fast just so he could try some crepes. Desperate to let her try some pastries, we found Cookie Stéfanie, which was just minutes away by foot from the Westin Hotel we were staying at. She was so excited when we found it! When we entered, we were greeted my the warm aromas of fresh cakes, bars, and cookies. She chose what she wanted quickly after looking at the case full of gluten free desserts. She went to the convenient counter to order her dessert. It was given to her quickly, fresh and warm. We took a seat in the cozily decorated back (pictured) and watched her devour the carrot cake she had ordered. She loved the frosting! I tried the cake and thought it was delicious for a gluten free baked good. The next day, we had walked to McGill university and were dying for something sweet. Again, we stubbled upon Cookie Stéfanie. I had some fresh fruit and a sparkling lavender lemonade. My dad got a blueberry bar, my mom got a latte, my older sister got a chocolate cupcake, and my little sister got a caramel cake. They all said it hit the spot after our long excursion. Yum! The decorations were also really cute and fit the theme well. I included a picture of it in my review, too! In summary, Cookie Stéfanie is a cute little cafe that serves excellent gluten free desserts, as well as drinks and food, too! I recommend if you are struggling to find a good cafe that serves gluten free! Thanks for reading! Follow for more reviews!

Yelp
I got to try the vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting, caramel drizzle, and some salt garnish. The cupcake was moist and delicious and the frosting was not too sweet. Great service too.
google avatar

Rufus S.

Yelp
Cookie Stéfanie was good but it wasn't great. I got the gluten free bacon grilled cheese and it definitely tasted gluten free which I was disappointed by. The Jean Lois was good but slightly dry and if it wasn't for the timely manner which the food got out and the cute patisserie this would be a way worse review. All in all if your gluten free and you want to have a good lunch this would not be my first choice.

Yelp
Freshly baked, noticeably sweet confections grace the counter counter display of this ornate bakery. Crumbly, Moist and very reasonably priced for specialty food; these goodies are also sold at many locations in and around Montreal. Note : some products contain tree nuts, be mindful of allergies.

Yelp
perfect place for those with celiac disease. I got the Apple bacon grilled cheese on gluten free bread, it was incredible :)

Yelp
On my way to old port, stopped by Cookie Stephanie for a warm beverage since I am freezing outside. It's a tiny café with filled up with friendly and kind staff. I ordered a chai and a grilled cheese sandwich. I had better chai compared to here. The grilled cheese was amazing. I am happy to pass by here and I enjoyed the warmth of nice staff, food and drink. Recommended!

Yelp
We stopped at this little bakery to pick up sweets to take back to our rooms and rest awhile. Gluten-free never looked or tasted so good in a public bakery. The place felt very quaint with a light, bright and airy feel right in the Old Port section. We ordered the salted caramel cupcakes and date/chocolate muffins. It was just the right amount to sate our appetite. It's always difficult to know which bakery to try because they are everywhere, but we are glad that we stopped in this little gem.

Yelp
This is a beautiful shop in the heart of Montréal. I had a cinnamon apple loaf, the double chocolate muffin and an Americano. All gluten free/vegan. Decadent and a wonderful way to start off the morning. People with gluten and dairy sensitivities should definitely check this place out! There are selections that are not gf so celiacs beware. I only wish that there were some gf/vegan cookie selections!

Yelp
Being gluten free is not easy and more difficult when traveling. I was delighted when my SO told me this was next to our hotel! Enjoying a raspberry chocolate muffin and a chai latte--and for half the cost at Starbucks in the US! Lots of options for lunches too!
google avatar

Ethan T.

Yelp
This was a nice gluten-free bakery near our hotel in Old Montreal. Everything in the place was gluten-free and freshly made. We got the vegan biscuit, the date treat, and the carrot cake. Based on what we pay for gluten free in the United States, this bakery was a really great deal. All items tasted great!

Yelp
I've heard some really good things about this place so I was really excited to try it out! Very cute little place right the middle of old port. Unfortunately, my visit wasn't as wonderful as I hoped for. I ordered a hot chocolate which barely had any taste of chocolate. It tasted like watered down hot chocolate, similar to what you would get in a machine. I was very disappointed considering the women working there told me they use homemade powder for the hot chocolate and it was really good. I also ordered a banana, chocolate and coconut pastry which was way too sweet and had an overpowering flavour of coconut. I also got a containers of praline ice cream and a container of strawberry sorbet. Those 2 were the best thing there. I recommend trying out their sorbets.

Yelp
I went here as part of a food tour and wasn't sure what to expect. After reading that we would have a gluten-free dessert I was worried that taste would be compromised and that this place would just be a trendy-fad cafe. Boy was I wrong! The atmosphere here was so cute and had no one told me that the menu was GF, I never would have known. The carrot cake was fantastic and I definitely would recommend it for a quick bite!

Yelp
My mom, whose celiac, loves cookie Stefanie and we finally made a date to go together! We ordered lattes along with their carrot cake and maple chocolate cookie. Their carrot cake and cookies are incredible! The carrot cake was moist (not crumbly like alot of GF desserts) but not oily and the icing was delicious! The cookie is what impressed me most. It was dense, gooey and nutty..soooo good! My mom also ordered their pulled pork grilled cheese made with their homemade bread - also terrific. We were on our way out and my mom couldn't help but buy some pastries to go! She grabbed a few more cookies, a lemon blueberry cake and a loaf of freshly baked bread. I loved that Cookie Stefanie has frozen cakes, breads and ice cream. I think it's a great idea to keep one of their cakes in your freezer for when you may be in a pinch or just don't feel like making a cake for an occasion. They also had a fridge with gluten free meals such as lettuce salads, pasta salads, potato salads, sandwiches and some desserts.

Yelp
I didn't love it, but I'm not gluten-free. I'd give it 3 stars, but My GF friend says 4. Everything is GF in the entire restaurant, which is a real plus. They had a number of delightful-looking cookies, cupcakes, and bars, plus grilled cheese sandwiches. We each got a grilled cheese with bacon, shared a Mexican rice salad, and had a date bar to share. The date bar was excellent! It was a crunchy granola top and bottom with a thick layer of dates between. Yummy! The rice salad was pretty good - nicely flavored, fresh and crunchy veggies. Unfortunately, the rice was a bit crunchy too. The only thing I didn't really like was the grilled cheese. I felt like everything needed salt - the cheese, the bacon, the bread. Plus the bread's consistency was weird, but not if you're GF. :)

Yelp
Went with a friend after work for dessert. It's a gluten free shop right in old port. They have all kinds of cakes and cupcakes in minis and large sizes. I really enjoyed their cupcakes for a gluten free dessert. They have many options of tea, which they serve in pretty mason jars. They also have savoury options. It's a fairly small place. They have high chairs and tables for you to enjoy and sip on your drink. The artwork is beautiful. Service was good. Would definitely stop by to pick up a dessert in the future.

Yelp
I do believe this is the one place in Montreal we went to twice during our week-long visit. And how could we not? Go for a visit, try one little bite of anything, and I bet you'd be a repeat customer as well. Long gone are the days of gluten free baked goods tasting like cardboard. Plenty of people and places have figured out fabulous recipes that won't leave you disappointed, and no one should write off Cookie Stefanie just because it's a dedicated gluten free bakery. On our first visit, Adam and I shared a coconut, chocolate, and nut cookie bar that was amazing. Incredible balance of flavors, sweet but not too much so, with a heavenly melt in your mouth texture. The toasted coconut was perfect and the bar was plenty big to share. It was wonderful paired with our espresso, which was one of the best coffees we had on our trip. During our second Stefanie trip, we opted for something savory. Grilled cheese. And oooohhh my god you guys.. Most melty, cheesy, gooey, fat sandwich you ever saw. Seriously... They grab a HUGE handful of shredded cheese and smush it in-between seriously good GF bread in a panini maker. It's all messy and perfect. I ordered mine with bacon and onions, which elevated it to a new level of wonder. There's all kinds of beautiful baked good here from muffins, to cookies, to bars, to pastries, to brownies. Great coffee menu and juices as well. Prices are probably a little higher than your typical bakery, but nothing outrageous and definitely worth the price.

Yelp
Amazing pastries! My favorite is the "Le Reine" which is a date cake with coconut topping. Everything is really good, except the bread from the grilled cheese sandwich needs a little work with the texture, it is a bit gritty. Your store is currently closed on Sunday.... please open your business on Sundays!!!

Yelp
We ambled in here to hide from the rain before catching a show. They have an assortment of treats: from cupcakes to brownies and muffins to bars; and they also have grilled cheese sandwiches and melts as lunch offerings. The staff was very friendly and let us sate our visual appetite before recommending us the carrot cake. Now, between this being a gluten-free shop, and myself not being a fan of carrot cakes... I confess I had low low expectations. But the earnest enthusiasm behind her recommendation sold me. And thank god for keeping an open-mind, because what a carrot cake it was! Each bite a perfect balance of soft moist cake and cream cheese frosting. Nothing like the dreadful 'healthy-tasting' mushy mealy stuff I feared. No sickly sweet thick frosting to cover a mediocre grainy dry texture. No, this, this is the carrot cake par excellence. The one carrot cake! I am a converted. The 5 stars is purely for the carrot cake and service. We sampled nothing else as I didn't want to contaminate the lingering heavenly carrot cake taste in my mouth.
google avatar

Yelp
All the reviews are accurate. Place is great, grilled cheese with bacon was excellent, and a very good price considering gluten free. So used to getting gauged for gluten free. I wanted to try something else and the staff recommended The carrot cake which was so moist I was glad I listened.
google avatar

Yelp
The date square is decent and has the right amount of sweetness. The coffee is good. They have nice high tables by the windows, overlooking Théâtre St-James. The person at the counter was very patient and helpful. The washroom is clean, but it is located on another floor. You have to go through the main building.

Jade U.

Yelp
2 stars for the food and 1 star for customer service. Went to this cafe as it is by our Hotel and rating was 4.6 stars. Attendant should be more respectful to people of color like us. Called me "hey, can I just give u this here" while calling others ( who are white and speaks French) Madam. SMH
google avatar

Debbie G.

Yelp
I am not huge fan of GF deserts but gave this place near my office a chance. The muffin was so tasty that I couldn't tell the difference. I had a delicious and healthy date muffin topped with pumpkin seeds and other wonderful ingredients. The next item on my list is their carrot cake which I have heard wonderful things about. Gluten tolerant or not give this place a chance!

K M.

Yelp
Absolutely worth the visit - and they have gluten free and some non-gluten free options for your non-gf friends. Had the Nutella muffin, the carrot cake and a bacon grilled cheese. Delicious, service was fabulous and great to sit in, take away or have a seat on the bench outside.
google avatar

Wesley S.

Yelp
Awesome little quick stop for a snack! Loved the carrot cake! But get there before they sell out of certain items, they only make so many for the day. Cute shop!
google avatar

Shazia K.

Yelp
A cute little place that has a ton of delicious gluten free options. The general vibe of this place is calming. A nice place to sit with your yummy treats and chat with friends. My friend and I had cupcakes and a chocolate covered treat with icing in the middle. Top these treats off with a cup of tea and we were in heaven. It is a nice place to go if you are intolerant to gluten or have celiacs disease as everything made is gluten free. Service was fast and there was enough place to sit in the back of the cafe. They also offer many different types of tea and coffee. Definitely going back to try their cakes.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an adorable cafe located in Old Montreal. I first went as part of the Old Montreal food tour (where everyone gets a slice of carrot cake and bottled water) but returned on my own a few days later. After trying the carrot cake, banana/chocolate chip cake, and blueberry muffin, I can definitely say that the carrot cake is the bakery's staple. Every item is gluten-free, but you can hardly taste the difference (especially with the carrot cake)! Prices are also very reasonable. I saw quite a few customers trying their grilled cheese, but I wasn't able to sample any. I'd definitely recommend stopping by Cookie Stefanie if you're short on time but want a quick and delicious pastry. They also serve coffee, tea, and other drinks.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
What a wonderful find. The food is very flavorful and fresh. The prices are very very good. Everything is very affordable. We tried an assortment of muffins and grilled cheese sandwiches and they made for a very filling and satisfying breakfast. Simply put, everything was very delicious. My favorite was the Nutella muffin with blueberries. There was a nice dollop of Nutella in the middle. If you are avoiding gluten, this is a must try.
google avatar

Oh K.

Yelp
Got the fleur de sel caramel cake. To break it down: Fleur de sel - fine Caramel - can't go wrong Cake - ugh. hated it. Made with chickpea/garbanzo flour, and it tastes like it. Never going to try the cakes from here again. Might stop in for another grilled cheese someday if I'm nearby and need lunch.
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
Some people might be afraid to try gluten free foods I admit I use to be . I've come to Cookie Stéfanie for lunch had a salad called "super Bol Au Poulet" it was pretty good for just being a salad after eating it I felt proud and satisfied for eating a healthy lunch , most of the time I eat junk so it was a nice change . For 8.50 which can be pricey for a salad to me the taste and size is worth it . I also had the grilled cheese with pork and to me for 7.50 it was good but not worth the price I've had better or just good for a lot less. If your looking for a healthy lunch try their salads you won't regret it.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Best carrot cake we've ever had. You must try! We came here as part of a food tour. They have a cute little boutique full of cupcakes and other delectables.
google avatar

Yelp
A lovely spot in Montreal for your sweet-tooth cravings! Cookie Stefanie was the second stop during our food tour and boy was this place a necessary visit! We were given the gluten free carrot cake as a sample. As soon as we all took our first bite, we were so shocked our eyes widened the size of the cake. None of us thought we would actually love something gluten-free (no shame). We immediately started planning when to visit the store again in order to buy some to bring back home. Long story short, we eventually did go back and brought a few boxes back! We didn't get to try any of their other desserts, but they sure did look delicious. This place is conveniently steps away from the Crew Collective Cafe. Make sure to pay it a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
I was so happy to find a gluten-free bakery during my trip to Montreal! The woman working there was really friendly. I had an absolutely delicious open-faced smoked salmon sandwich with a flavorful dill sauce, cucumbers, and pickled onions. The mini raspberry cupcake was perfect for dessert; the frosting had a great consistency and the cake was just right. The interior is feminine and upbeat; it was the perfect place to stop for a quick gluten free lunch.
google avatar

Lu Z.

Yelp
Best carrot cake ever. I like this place because it's not trying to be healthy or vegan or dairy free etc it's just plain delicious desserts for people that can't have gluten like me and just want to live a normal life and eat the traditional cakes, cookies and the stuff normal people can eat! Hope they open a new location in the plateau because I have to come really far to get quality gluten free cakes (trust me there aren't much, most compensate on adding way too much sugar or falls apart) Please come on the plateau there's a huge demand!
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
The variety and deliciousness that hey offer is mouth-watering! We walked in to the fragrance of a savory focaccia bread or pizza being prepared. Despite that temptation, a sweet treat was appealing due to the time of day and small appetite. Delicious, assorted gluten free favorites are so tempting and appealing. We bought some to eat there and more to enjoy later. Yum.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
This was the best gf muffin I'd ever had! And the bread was very soft and not at all hard or grainy. Not a bad price for gf either.
google avatar

Neo V.

Yelp
Excellent Gluten Free place! Grilled cheese with bacon and onion was amazing! Muffins and the carrot cake are very tasty! A must try if your in Montreal!
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
we bought boules de noel. i don't know what this cute little chocolate ball is made of but the filling tastes like fig paste. personally i found it a little too sweet but after all it's a treat. christmas fruit cakes are also available there. may visit again to try other sandwiches.
google avatar

NaBeela W.

Yelp
Was lucky enough to enjoy a sample of their carrot cake on the Local Montreal Tour. When I tell you it was the best cake I've ever had, I can't even emphasize. The icing was rich & light. The cake itself was melt-in-your-mouth & offered an array of new flavors for a carrot cake. Omg soooo good
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
Everything was so delicious. We (gluten free and non gluten free people) tried 5 different things. You must try this place even if you don't have celiac disease. Additionally the staff members were incredibly patient and friendly with our excitement and all of our questions.
google avatar

Shaw T.

Yelp
I have tried cookies sold at fou d'ici on de maisonneuve w (place des arts metro): they were all good (chocolate, lemon & ginger, dark chocolate and maple), except for the chai latte one which had a very strong, funky taste and smell. I am still eyeing the Reine Elizabeth cake, as well as the carrot cake! Definitely worth a visit if you are on a gluten-free diet and want to treat yourself to a guilt-free dessert :D
google avatar

Joel F.

Yelp
A lovely little bakery/ cafe with a great assortment. I tried the blueberry muffins. Delicious with breakfast! I didn't get a chance to try anything else but everything looked very good. The staff is very attentive and the place spotless. I came before closing time and the salesperson greeted me with a big smile and was quick to assist me with questions about their offerings and any concerns I had about ingredients. It was a quick trip, but I'll be sure to visit it again, and try more of their offerings!
google avatar

Vibhor S.

Yelp
I've never been a big fan of carrot cake, because vegetables in a cake wasn't really my thing lol. So when the server suggested carrot cake, I was skeptical, but... oh boy, this place definitely changed my perception. The carrot cake is rich and the cream cheese icing makes it even better.
google avatar

Sam A.

Yelp
Cute little place in old town with a very attentive and friendly staff. The carrot cake is to die for and the espresso is delicious. The grilled cheese melts in your mouth. The chocholate cupcake is really good too. I wish I could try more of their sweets, but I ran out of stomach space. This place is also part of a walking food tour, but keep in mind that they are closed on Sundays.
google avatar

Yelp
I love more than anything to support local business over big box shops. I've been to Cookie Stefanie several times and have ordered many baked goods over the years. Recently I ordered their egg salad sandwich. Within an hour of eating that sandwich I started to feel off. So I looked at the ingredient list and noticed Worcestershire sauce was listed as an ingredient (with no asterisk noting that it was a Gfree version). The next day, I went back and spoke with the owner. I asked if they were using a gluten free version, as most Worcestershire sauces contain barley malt. She said they were using regular Worcestershire sauce. I could by the blank look on her face that she had no clue standard Worcestershire sauce contains gluten. I told her to please update her recipe as it made me sick. She just shrugged her shoulders and said "Okay, I'll take it out". I lost all faith in the place that day. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to catering to a market with a specific food allergy. I began to wonder what other products they were inadvertently using gluten. Note: I went back weeks later - the ingredient list of their egg salad sandwich was still unchanged, which is why I'm posting this in a public forum. Buyer beware.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
So delicious I couldn't even tell it was gluten-free I also like the format, there are mini cupcake samplers ...so I can indulge and try different flavors without eating too much dessert Wish there were more chocolate themed ones The hours are pretty limited, like most businesses on St. Jacques I prefer Cookie Stefanie over Les Trois Glaceurs, because the cupcakes are delicious and gluten-free I don't have a gluten intolerance, I just find it less heavy
google avatar

Youri H.

Yelp
You know when you have really high expectations for a place and then they don't deliver... Cookie Stephanie isn't that. In fact, it over-delivered! With some of the best grilled cheeses in town and a huge assortment of desserts, this has got to be one of my favourite Old Port lunch spots. Bonus points for gluten-free bread.
