Wow! This might be my new favorite spot to get a burger. I haven't felt an affinity for a burger stand like this since Redrum in Davis shut down. Cookie's is the real deal!
I decided recently that I wanted to give as many drive in/walk up burger places as possible a try pretty recently, and have so far made my way to Cookie's Drive In and Whitey's Jolly Kone in recent weeks. After one visit to Cookie's, I feel like I can give the search for the perfect burger drive in a rest, but I'll try the rest. You know, for science.
There's a window to order at Cookie's that's accessible from the street or their modest parking lot. I noticed a few groups either waiting in line or waiting in their cars for their food, and prepared myself for a bit of wait, both in line, and for my order. I was impressed with how quickly the staff moved through both! I ordered in no time and noticed a weekly specials board, that featured a pastrami and Swiss cheese sandwich and was immediately in. For just $3.95 (I think more), I opted to add fries and a drink. Worth it!
A couple things about the menu: it's super affordable and there are a lot of options, whether you want different toppings on your burger or a different meat all together. Elk, ostrich, wild boar, and buffalo were all meats I will consider for my future visits, but I figured I should go with a good old OG burger for my first try.
From visits to other places that are similar to Cookie's, I expected a bit of a wait for my food. They're a pretty small location with a minimal amount of cooking space and staff. No worries, I figure. I could sit down at one of the provided tables out front and play around on my phone while I waited. Surprisingly, the wait wasn't long, and I received my food (as did the people in front of me) in just a few minutes.
The burger was photogenic (see the picture I took), generously portioned, and piping hot. The fries were fresh out of the fryer, too, and I had to wait a few minutes to let them cook off, so I wouldn't burn my tongue. Once I was ready to dive in, though, the meal didn't last long.
The burger was juicy with just enough fat to be flavorful without feeling greasy or cheap. The pastrami was smoky and salty and really complimented the Swiss cheese, onions, and mustard. I was very content - and only disappointed when my meal finally came to an end!
The fries were good, too. Not too memorable, in comparison to the burger, but decently portioned and well worth adding on to my meal.
I told friends about this spot immediately after going, which is pretty high praise. I'll continue my quest for the best burger drive in in the area, but Cookie's will be hard to beat!
