A downtown daytime classic where the Torres family hand-makes chips to order and ladles birria consomé alongside tortas and breakfast plates. Featured by Community Impact and noted by Local Profile for taco cravings, it’s all heart and heritage.

First time eating here and I’ve lived in McKinney since 2020 and it was worth the wait. Attentive staff and a full house for the breakfast menu. Food was very good. We ordered the migas and breakfast burritos. Coming back for the lunch and dinner menus sometimes. I’ve heard people rave about Cookies and thought they deserved a good review from me, to add to all the other good reviews they have. Try it you’ll like it!

Google
Being from South Texas, I am very critical of Mexican food. I have not found authentic Mexican food until now. The menudo and barbacoa is some of the BEST, if not THE BEST, I have had. You order at the counter and serve your own drinks. It's a small location and parking is limited but definitely worth the wait. Located in downtown McKinney area.

Google
Like mentioned in other reviews the parking here sucks and you can easily miss it. Now, this is a true hole in the wall place with amazing food. Went for lunch and we had a variety of different things. I had the birra tacos with some consomme and some El pastor tacos. I absolutely love the birra tacos. They had a little crunch to them from the tortilla and the consomme was amazing. My mouth is salivating thinking about this. Can't wait to go back. Excited to try the rest of their menu.

Google
Ordered the Birria tacos, horchata and the churros Food was absolutely delicious and fresh horchata was perfect and the churros were amazing worth the money the high quality you get here definitely a secret spot in mckinney you need to visit!

Google
So this place is a little difficult to find and the parking sucks but the food was delicious! All of the workers were extremely kind and friendly. I got the birria beef tacos. I believe they have the traditional goat ones too. The salsa for the tacos were really good but I preferred the green! The place was decently busy but still got food out in a reasonable time. Can't wait to come again!

Google
If you desire authentic Mexican food in the McKinney area Cookie's is the place to go. I believe they are open from 7 to 3 only. We went around 1pm, and it was busy. The food was good, and both my co workers want to go back. If your a diet, don't go. It will be ruined. Lastly the Churros were excellent.

Google
I love this place but they have gone way up on prices. I got an order of brria tacos with fajita meat and a side of rice and beans and it was $17.50. I got no drink or chips and salsa I could have understood the price if I had ordered a drink and chips and salsa but I didn’t. That’s so expensive for what this little place is I was shocked when he told me but I just paid and know not to never order that again. I’ve been going here for 4 years and it was never that expensive.

Andres DZ

Google
It’s a very small operation. Think about a food truck that moved into a tiny building and now they are serving inside. The food is good, not the best tacos I’ve ever had but for the price they are definitely a score(it’s like $2.30 a taco if i remember correctly) . I did liked the salsas and the fact that they give me the cilantro and onions on the site so I can add to taste!!

Yelp
If you're hunting for the real deal when it comes to Mexican food in McKinney, look no further than Cookie's Mexican Food . This hidden gem is serving up some of the best guisos, tacos, tortas, and gorditas cooked like someone's abuela is back in the kitchen putting her heart into every bite. Their tacos rojos/birria tacos are next-level -- perfectly crisped on the outside, packed with juicy barbacoa and cheese on the inside, and bursting with bold, authentic flavor the meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender, and when dipped in their rich, savory consomé, it's game over. Honestly, that consomé alone deserves its own spotlight -- it's that good. One thing I always look for at a true, down-to-earth taquería is who's eating there and the vibes, and when you pull up and see trucks, lawn trailers, and work crews lined up, you know the food's legit. Construction workers, lawn crews, day laborers, these folks know where to find real food that fuels a hard day's work. And they're all at Cookie's. Service is friendly, the portions are generous, and the prices are fair. No frills, just flavor. This place is everything a great local Mexican spot should be.

Yelp
Not Worth It for Tourists -- Locals Might Keep Coming Back I stopped by Cookie's Mexican Restaurant in downtown McKinney at 11:15 AM on a Tuesday for their Taco Tuesday lunch special -- 3 tacos and 2 sides for $11.99, plus a Mexican Coke bringing my meal just under $18. I tried the barbacoa, pastor, and asada tacos, and unfortunately, the experience fell short. The pastor and asada were dry and chewy, while the barbacoa lacked flavor unless you add hot sauce. The refried beans were average, but the rice was dry and bland. Portion sizes were below average, which combined with the food quality and price, made the meal feel like poor value overall. The restaurant is small -- only 9 tables inside with 4 seats each -- so seating is limited. The ordering is walk-up style, and the food is brought to your table. The woman at the register had a dry, no-nonsense attitude that may not be for everyone. Bottom line: * Food quality and portion size do not justify the price. * Not a spot I'd recommend to tourists looking for great value or authentic flavor. * Locals seem to keep coming back, so maybe it's a community favorite despite its flaws.

Yelp
The best breakfast burritos in town hands down. I'll say they are expensive but, they are huge and can easily be shared. I love how they press them so the tortilla has a nice crunch. The bacon is extra crispy inside too. Service was quick and easy. The salsa they gave with it was amazing that we asked for extra. Will be back to try other foods

Yelp
What's going on at Cookie's? Two weekend Saturdays in a row they're closed. No notice, nothing g on the doors

Larry B.

Yelp
Great breakfast tacos - very helpful service including the ability to self order via QR code. Clean place to eat with definite authentic Mexican food. Park on the east side of the restaurant.

Yelp
Today I learned: This place has been serving McKinney for 28 years, and it was our first time to visit, definitely not our last. It's lunch only, and it's most definitely a "form follows function" place. Small dining area, somewhat utilitarian, but clean and well lit. Place your order by the hot food server area, and pay after you eat at the register nearby. Mexican Coke as well as the usual array of sweet bottled drinks are available, as is a soda fountain with Pepsi products. But what of the food? In a word, great. I chose the birria taco platter, netting me four crispy street taco size tacos filled with a generous serving of lamb, a cup of consomme, and a smaller cup of red sauce to add some spice. Chopped onions and cilantro are also provided if you want it more traditional. The lamb was unmistakably lamb, but not gamey at all. Tender and juicy, and even better when dipped in the consomme, these tacos were divine. My wife ordered the gorditas, a pair of flour tortillas split open and stuffed with chicken and pork, with sides of refried beans and rice (both almost certainly housemade, and delicious). The gorditas were fantastic as well, with tender meats and great seasoning. Bottom line, this was a great meal served in an old school lunch joint that impresses where it counts, with the food and service. Don't let the low key exterior fool you, there's deliciousness therein.

Yelp
Hidden gem for real. Food: I got the 3 tacos lunch special for $14 - carnitas, shredded chicken, and barbacoa with a horchata. A single tortilla taco was a bit off putting, but I was really disappointed when I went to pick up my taco and it just ripped in half. The meats are extremely flavorful and juicy but that made the tortilla get mushy and rip. Atmosphere: Access road was closed off due to construction & this is not typically my favorite area to be in, but the restaurant itself was spacious and clean! Service: Guy & his daughter are so sweet. Ordered and left with my togo under 5 minutes & this was on a Monday around noon!

Yelp
This is a WHOLE Family ran hidden jam nestled in old McKinney ! The food is hot, fresh, good and comes out fast ! I'm a forever customer !

Yelp
Let's just say... Dear business, don't you dare ever close! It's a small hole in the wall with a family that makes its food authentically as if you were sitting in your mom's kitchen! They cook and treat you with their hearts not their hands.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh My Goodness!! So good and service was so friendly. Food came out very hot and fast. Will definitely be back next time I'm in McKinney.

Yelp
Great breakfast! Had a breakfast plate, flautas and a few other meats. Delicious. Recommend: Barbacoa, Picadillo & chicken flautas.

Yelp
Awesome & authentic Mexican food. First spot that really hit our craving for Mexican food after recently moving from San Diego (we like Tex Mex but it's just different).
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
The best migas & breakfast burrito in town! Beans & papas were really good as well. Not crazy about the corn tortillas. Salsas are good & spicy.

Asheville H.

Yelp
I'd read about the hype however my experience was so-so. Would try again tho...could've been an off day

Sadie B.

Yelp
When you first walk in you are greeted warmly with a hello. I ordered the taco plate with 1 chicken and 2 beef fajita and it came with a small drink . I would give the taste an overall 5/10 because it could have a more flavor, it would have been better if it was a double corn shell because when I picked it up it broke apart. The bean are really good as a great taste for some beans. But I would go back and give it another shot. The price was 14.06 which is good
google avatar

Tommy C.

Yelp
Just your standard street taco and other things joint but they are putting the magic in their recipes here. The place isn't much to look at and sometimes the ordering methods are weird but the food comes out hot and packed with flavor.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
Small and simple - with great food and good service. This place is legitimate. Clearly family owned... which I love. We came for breakfast... The breakfast burritos are outstanding... And very large. I ordered the big... But I had to take half home to eat later. My wife had the migas. We will definitely come back here regular. Bi lingual staff.
google avatar

Louie M.

Yelp
The only complaint I have is it's closed Sunday and Monday. Menudo is good and so are the carnitas tacos. Observation that the breakfast tacos are a hit.
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
First timer. Loved it! I've been wanting to try Cookies for years but with the construction, and the fact they close at 3pm, made it a challenge. I got the taco plate with barbacoa and al pastor on flour tortillas. Everything was so delicious. The rice, the beans, the taco's, the green sauce. Yum! Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Lindsey L.

Yelp
Cookie's has the best birria tacos around, they are fresh and delicious. All of the salsa is amazing and I highly recommend trying it all out!
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
If you're looking for a hidden gem, this is the place. I was looking for authentic Mexican food to try and I kept seeing this place come up. Full disclosure - this is the definition of hole in the wall, but don't judge before you try the food. I got the lunch combo of 3 tacos (barbacoa) and my husband got the lunch combo of half order quesadilla. We split an order chips and salsa. Food was VERY good and portioned really awesome (we could've split one thing). Fair warning, no guacamole! We had young waitresses (guess is they were the owner's daughters) but they were really sweet! Owner came and checked on us making sure we were enjoying everything. For sure worth the try!
google avatar

Joel E.

Yelp
If you're looking for an Authentic Mexican Taqueria, search no further. The carne asada street tacos and breakfast burritos are action packed with flavors! Will be returning here again and again... and again.
google avatar

Wendy J.

Yelp
Looking for a yummy local and authentic spot? This family run establishment near downtown McKinney is worth checking out. It's counter service. The staff were helpful in deciding what to try. Definitely authentic Mexican food. I highly recommend trying the tacos. You will be back.

Samii M.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best breakfast burritos places I've ever had. So so delicious!!

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! My sister and i love to go on outings and try new places, and this just so happened to be the place we tried ! food is amazing and exactly what we asked for ! but the real deal was the service! super good staff and all very nice. very clean as well. your classic hole in the wall restaurant is always amazing. definitely recommend this is you are missing home food.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
It's impossible for me oversell this place because it is just THAT GOOD. Obviously it's a bit more of a hole-in-the-wall vibe, but usually we always opt for takeout here. My wife and I always come here for their breakfast, their Migas, breakfast burritos, juevos rancheros are all so good.
google avatar

Kawana B.

Yelp
New spot. Tried the Birria tacos, rice and beans, and churros. The tacos were not too bad. The tender meat was hitting. The rice and beans were both rather dry. Not sure if maybe it was an off day or not. Churros were crispy. The inside was chewy. I prefer a more flavorful churro. I think if there was a dipping sauce that would help. Still searching for the best tacos in my area....

Yelp
Sometimes I review a restaurant just so I don't forget how good it was or where it was. Cookie's writes it's own review on your tongue, in your stomach and through your nose when you walk in! You don't need to ask, "The food any good here?". You can smell and see the answer. Then you can order and taste. It is sooooo good! Most Mexican restaurants rarely have goat meat except for special occasions. Do you want chicharrones? They got it *every day* and it should be made illegal because it's so damn good! Really. I was done eating and I wanted more. I went home and took a nap and dreamed about chicharrones. Now my mouth waters thinking about it. This is a small restaurant. Maybe 8 tables and run by a family that cares about its food. Good vibes. Mexican families enjoying the food and ripped workers come in with big boots, dirty jeans, and ball caps at lunch ordering up food. Everybody's happy. Great food, reasonable prices. Here is where the salt of the earth gathers to feed.

S H.

Yelp
Great street tacos. This place was crowded and clearly popular! They had great customer services as well.

Paul B.

Yelp
I love this place! The breakfast burritos are so good - you'll want to call your mom and tell her! Seriously - the breakfast burritos are so large - packed with eggs, potatos, bacon, chorizo, beans. My mouth is watering as I describe this burrito. Delicious. Did I mention the home made hot sauce - I wish they sold it as a stand alone item! Go. Eat.

Bill P.

Yelp
Excellent I would recommend the two meat special with homemade tortillas. Tastes like food your mom would make. Great value. Try to go once a week.
google avatar

Irvin L B.

Yelp
Small family establishment, great find! Clean and cozy, nothing fancy but authentic! Great flavor, fresh and filling! The lunch special was more than I could handle. I love the steak and potatoes, it was cooked perfectly! Tender, reminds me of my moms steak and potatoes. I stumbled upon this place searching Yelp while in Downtown McKinney but it a a good find. Great parking and convenient. Great casual experience!

Yelp
"The Hidden Gem of McKinney TX" I've been visiting my sister here in McKinney TX for the last 5 yrs, she always talked about the Birria at the Cookie's Restaurant, Birria is a very popular dish in the Hispanic community, This time we were able to make it to the Cookie's Restaurant, The restaurant experience, as soon as we walked in, the staff and Edgar were very friendly and helpful. The Birria was off the wall! Meaning it was amazingly delicious! It's hard to find places that know how to make it and this place rocked it! It has become the place a must to visit every time I visit my sister here in McKinney TX, I highly recommend this place and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I am so glad I found this place. The business is located near downtown and parking can be tricky but once you make it, it'll all be worth it. The name is a bit misleading but the moment I walked in I knew it was going to be authentic. We went during lunch and there were several small parties already eating. Lunch plate was a bit pricier than what I anticipated for a taco joint but the flavors were so great I didn't even mind. The only upsetting thing was that they didn't have lengua tacos. They did however have the best chichoron I've ever had. The corn tortillas were the best, most authentic ones I've ever tasted as well.
google avatar

Carlotta L.

Yelp
One of those hole in the wall spots that you can't pass up. Very small shack but the service and food makes up for it. The have great breakfast, the tacos are delicious, and omg that hot fresh salsa is great! Def check them out if you're close to the area!

Yelp
What a great little gem in downtown McKinney! Came here for breakfast and couldn't wait to come back to try their lunch/dinner. It's a tiny place located on a corner with limited street parking. Walking in I felt like I coming over to a friend's home with their family in the kitchen making a homemade meal. Very casual and quaint. My first visit was for breakfast. I love chilaquiles and theirs did not disappoint. I got the rojo kind and the red sauce had quite a spicy kick, but the smokiness it had was delicious. The huevos rancheros was perfection. We got some barbacoa a la carte to go which came with tortillas and both red and green sauce. The green sauce is definitely more mild. My second visit was for lunch and I had the barbacoa and chicharron plate. I enjoyed the second visit as much as the first. The family running this place is welcoming and friendly. Definitely making this one of my go-tos whenever I'm in the area.

Yelp
Must try the Tacos dorados de Birria! This is an authentic Mexican food restaurant so if your looking for authentic this is your spot, it's delicious!

Kevini Q.

Yelp
One of the most authentic Mexican restaurants since we moved to Texas from SoCal. TexMex is an abomination so this was very refreshing to find. The bean and cheese burrito was delicious as was the quesobirria tacos. Super friendly staff so that's always a plus for me.

Matthew J.

Yelp
There is nothing better than eating homemade. That is what you get at Cookies! Fresh and delicious authentic Mexican cooking. A lot of different place in the area doing a so/so job, but you will never be disappointed here. So glad they are back open. You were missed.
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
Nearly passed it going by. Was hard to see it at first but so glad we came in! Food we ordered is delicious! People are friendly and VERY hard working...not to mention pretty quick considering the crowd they had! We ordered menudo and two tacos of bacon and egg. The menudo tastes just like how our mom's would make it for us way back when! YUMMY! My tacos were tasty good. Not overcooked or anything. Homemade flour tortillas are a PLUS!

Shane ..

Yelp
City of McKinney, we need to rally around this awesome little business, Cookies Mexican Food. Their food is amazing and affordable and they have best tacos in town, bar none!! The city has been working on the street in front of them and caused them to shut down for several months with no help. That is just wrong! Please go by and give them a try, you will not be disappointed. You can park at Local Yocal and walk over or park at the gym next door! Support local businesses!!!

Yelp
Lots of hype about this spot. Pros: it's small and the people were super nice. I love taco shops. Decent red and green taco sauce. Con: I only have one but it was the overpriced Carnitas burrito. $10.63 Can't figure out why a burrito is such a mystery around this neighborhood. The Carnitas were way to fatty, they over cooked the tortilla and the meat was not fresh. Carnitas should be shredded and they cubed it. Just not on point. Confused. Took a disappointing photo. Try Mr Tako, Hernandez Taqueria or Tacos El Gordo off the 75 if your in this neighborhood.
google avatar

K C.

Yelp
No fun when the hyper and reviews do not live up. Really small and slow service and very pricey for the quality of food. We ordered a lot of food wanting to try everything and nope nothing was special or worth a trip back.

Maria C.

Yelp
It's closed lost your time come and lose your time please update times we also we are gonna stop using yelp due to this problem

Yelp
Ok so I've been wanting to hit this spot for a while and see what the idea was behind the Huge breakfast burrito. Although I admit it was a bit of a drive, good flavor has no boundary. This place literally serves you a 1-foot long burrito, cut in half. It was large and had everything you would expect in a breakfast burrito - meat (of your choice), refried beans, eggs, potato and cheese. Finally a place that doesn't put lettuce in a burrito - thank God! Lettuce is a filler, it doesn't belong in a burrito - this place had it right. I ordered the ham and chorizo, which cost me a bit more, but my only gripe was that I wish it had more chorizo than ham. The green salsa was good, the red salsa had a small kick, but mostly Smoky flavor - the only thing that was missing for me was the balance in chorizo to the rest, because you need to have that spice involved in the potatoes, and egg. I've been to many in hunt of a good Breakfast Burrito...so far. This one has taken the cake! Now I need to return to try their street tacos and chilaquiles.

Dawn S.

Yelp
The food was good but the refried beans were different and I personally did not like them. But overall I would definitely go back because the barbacoa with delicious!

Daniela R.

Yelp
As a Hispanic, who travels to Mexico often for Mexican food, THIS PLACE IS 10/10. They are closed Sunday's. Everyone there is friendly!

Yelp
Almost hate to review as this place is a wonderful secret. Thank you for service great authentic Mexican food with a side helping of affection. Pork and cactus or steak and potatoes!

Yelp
Fantastic food, great flavor. Best Torta I've found in the area. It's become a weekly trip.
