4 People Dead in Mass Shooting at Oldest Southern California Biker Bar | Eater LA

"Set in Trabuco Canyon in rural eastern Orange County, I found Cook’s Corner described as a family-friendly biker bar and restaurant with deep roots: it began as a roadside burger stand in 1931, became a bar after Prohibition ended in 1933, and started serving food as a tavern in 1946 when owner Earl Jack “E.J.” Cook hauled a mess hall up from the Santa Ana Army base. The place claims to be Southern California’s oldest biker bar and, beginning in the 1970s, drew motorcyclists of all stripes — including gang affiliates, law enforcement, and retirees — and has hosted community events such as weddings, charity events, and funerals. On the evening of August 23, what had been a typical scene of families eating plates of spaghetti and salad on the patio while the M Street rock band waited to start turned tragic when retired Ventura Police Department sergeant John Snowling opened fire in an apparent attempt to target his estranged wife; law enforcement responded within minutes, a confrontation led to the shooter’s death, and overall four people were killed (including the shooter) and six were injured, with two in critical condition and four stable at Providence Mission Hospital — Marie Snowling was among the injured. Longtime patron Gus Gunderman, who has frequented the establishment for four decades, said he’d never felt unsafe there and that “this could have happened anywhere.” There was no word on when Cook’s Corner would reopen." - Matthew Kang

Est. 1886...Cook's Corner is a legendary biker, law enforvement, firefighter and Trabuco Canyon locals hangout. Surprisingly good bar grub coming out of the kitchen, cheap beers and strong pours. Live music and events. An Asian couple stopped in asking for directions to Red Rock Canyon to hike the trail...the bar keep told them how to get there, but that there is an old man who lives back in the canyon who likes to shoot at people 😏 Classic OC Road House.

Google
Great place for live bands like Creedence and Company. Mario and his band have true talent! They go all out if you are celebrating your birthday or any special date. Pics show it all! Don’t forget Wednesday Spaghetti nite. A special gratitude to the staff as well. The cooks and bartenders run the place as smooth as possible.

Google
Cook’s Corner is hands down one of the coolest, most iconic spots in Orange County! Whether you ride in on a motorcycle, drive up with friends, or just stumble upon it while exploring the canyon, this place never disappoints. The vibe is pure SoCal—laid-back, rustic, and full of good energy. The live music is always top-notch, with great local bands playing everything from rock and blues to country. The outdoor patio is perfect for soaking up the sunshine, grabbing a cold drink, and people-watching—there’s truly nothing else like it. The staff is friendly, the food hits the spot (especially the burgers and tacos), and the crowd is a fun mix of locals, bikers, and music lovers. It’s the kind of place where everyone feels welcome, and the atmosphere just keeps you coming back. If you want a real California experience with character, great tunes, and an unbeatable vibe—Cook’s Corner is the place to be!

Google
Cook's Corner is a Legendary Biker Bar that welcomes all. I love this place. The venue is tucked away, secluded, and large. There is live music often with some great local bands that play regularly. There is plenty of seating and a lot of it is covered to provide shade. The employees are awesome! The patrons are a great bunch of people whose main common ground is just having the best time possible! After many days and nights spent here, it starts to have a sort of family feel to it. They serve up some decent food and the drinks are stiff. If you haven't been here, stop by, you will definitely have a good time.

Google
Fun atmosphere! Beautiful location!!! Love the outdoor seating area. Came with my family and it was perfect because my son could run around with me on the patio and we could still hear the music while we were outside.

Google
Was a beautiful day for a ride to Vooks corner with my wife. Had lunch at the busy patio area but was great to be there. Great weather this Sunday was just spectacular.. Be safe and keep the dirty side down.

Google
This is a favorite of mine, great music food and the people there are great. Lots of people having a great time and listening to music, they have live bands on the weekends and it's just all around a great place. And the drive there is o ly 25 minutes and beautiful especially if you ride a motorcycle.

Nicholas S.

Google
This is a classic motorcycle stop for food, drink, and camaraderie. I haven't been there in years, but just went with my club & enjoyed the visit. There was a live blues band that was pretty good, but a bit too loud for me as I couldn't hear my friends. Guess I'm getting old.

Yelp
Second time here last week and I did NOT expect the place to be that busy on a Thursday after work. Where did all of these people come from!? It's a bar up in the mountains!! It was like a Friday night after work, that's how busy it was. I had trouble finding a good spot for my bike, but fortunately after ordering some food, I noticed other people leaving so I was able to move my bike up to the front. Drinks are strong and the food offerings are pretty much standard bar fare, but in a good way. I ordered a patty melt and while it was very good, I've had better. It was a bit salty and that says a lot since I like my food salty. For $15.95 it also came with fries which automatically makes it EXCELLENT value for the price. Crowd and vibes were chill. It was a good mix of every age group and different crowds, not just bikers. Will definitely be back in the near future to try other foods and go hang out outside next time.

Yelp
My friend and I are here once a week to unwind, eat great food, chat with Don and service staff, listen to great music, and make new friends. Good Times!

Yelp
Wonderful old restaurant/biker bar. Our sandwiches were delicious and love eating al fresco.

Yelp
Good food, good music, and a great atmosphere. Bikers, friends, and family. Everyone is welcome there. Great place to go hang out.

Yelp
If you love going to dive bars this is the best bar in the county. And they have some fantastic food and wicked deals, because it is worth your time. And the service is great and they will treat you like family, and they have a historic building that has so much history to it. The best thing there is the All you can eat Unlimited Spaghetti Dinner for only $8 on Wednesdays which is the best deal in town, and you get as much as you want because they make fresh batches, every 15-20 minutes because they take the quality of their food very seriously which is not common for dive bars. If you want to get Unlimited Spaghetti for $8 the prices are great and they are worth the drive and your time.

Yelp
Ambience was quite interesting. It's definitely a cool spot to stop when you are out biking or out on your jeep or just wanna get a little sunshine and fresh air and a drink. The food is just ok. The service is OK. The girl who sold us T-shirts was a little rude, but besides that it's a good place to stop if you're thirsty. By the way, we did try the chili cheese fries, the nachos and the onion rings. They're more like a three star all of them.
google avatar

Terrence Y.

Yelp
This place is an institution and I always have a great time when I show up. It's a fun biker dive bar with a great atmosphere. They often have bands playing and people dancing. It has huge outdoor spaces, but inside at the bar is where all the fun is. They have all the drinks and beer you could ever want and all at reasonable prices. They also have a food counter to order burgers, wings and other bar food. It's not the best, but tastes great with a beer or cocktail. Make a trip out just for the fun of it.
google avatar

Sakul A.

Yelp
Nothing like Cook's Corner. Great food and drink options. The service is the best - everyone's been there for a while and is very knowledgeable. Ambiance cannot be matched, feels like a spot from a Western movie. Live music, sports on the TVs, cool cars and bikes out front, there's something for everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Nostalgic memories of the past and a cosy place to take a break and unwind. This place is in a lovely place in the woods and a grand stop for bikers to meet and greet and build new friendships

Yelp
The love band, food, service, people were all amazing! Next time I'll be taking my wife. Found our new hangout! Cooks Corner is the spot for those on 2 wheels! Right on!

Yelp
We came during lunch time so didn't get the full fun biker dive bar experience. However, this place does seem like it would be fun at night time with all the drinks! We ordered their lunch specials (cheeseburger and chicken tenders with fries) and I wish the portions were bigger for the price. The burger was smaller or about the size of in-n-out's for $15. I will say that the food though was better than expected. The burger was tasty and the chicken tenders/fries were crunchy. The place itself looks a bit run down and could be cleaner. I know this place has a rich history so I hope it sticks around for a while!

Yelp
Came here for a charity chili cook off. This place is great for a day outside relaxing. Watched a band. There were fun raffles and contests. There is always something fun going on. This day was the first hot day of summer. It was great! The staff is friendly and fast. There is a full bar onside and out and there were these tasty blackberry margaritas with fresh fruit. It gets very crowded. Lots of motorcycles! Free and spacious parking in 2 lots. Indoor and outdoor seating with shade and fans. There are a lot of food options and we both got the steak sandwich. This sandwich is one of my top all time favorite dishes. Moist and tender. It is delicious! Cooks I can't wait to see you again!

Yelp
On 8/4/25 I was refused service for being Handicapped with only one functional arm Due To a Stroke . Customer for many years. Wanna remove this for being honest ?

Yelp
Amazing bar. I came here for lunch and had the half pound burger, this was one of the best burgers I've had. The fried zucchini's were amazing, I couldn't believe the quality of the food coming out of the kitchen. The crowds here are all super friendly, everyone is a motorcyclist/bicyclist and everyone is just admiring each other's rides. The kitchen and bar staff were all super friendly. I was informed they have live music literally every night. The venue itself is gorgeous, it sits below a baby hill and they created this beautiful 5-6 levels of outside sitting area rolling upwards. I really like the food and the service and also just this place, it's a cute place to visit. I will be back.

Ben L.

Yelp
Cook's Corner never disappoints! The food is always delicious, the beer selection is great, and the atmosphere is just perfect. The music adds a fun vibe, and it's always a good time when I'm here. I find myself coming back again and again--definitely one of my favorite spots!

OK M.

Yelp
I used to go to this biker bar 40 years ago when beer bottles would fly through the air because someone would be pissed off. The service was always great. They didn't have much food back then the ambience was definitely a lowlife biker bar nothing but Harley's out front he didn't see those wimpy ass Hondas or Other Squirrley Japanese brands. I was by there a few years ago and it's changed dramatically now it's kind of high-end yuppie shiny Harley Davidson place. Anything goes motorcycle place? It's just not it's not the same. Folks with clean cut look and expensive scooters have over taken the places too bad

Yelp
I've been talking about making a ride to Cook's Corner with friends ever since I first bought my new, used bike in July. (2018 Honda CB500X) The bar/restaurant is located at the corner of Live Oak Canyon roads and Santiago Canyon. Cook's Corner - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=xVfadTaKmg_QGNqIUI2CJQ&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ Cook's Corner has a rich history, dating back to 1884 when it was originally established as a stagecoach stop. Over the years it and has become a popular gathering spot for motorcyclists, hikers, and locals. Cook's Corner has transformed into a biker-friendly bar and restaurant. It is situated in the scenic canyons of Orange County and offers a unique and rustic atmosphere for visitors. History - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=JwDG6SIS2zpoczbMfLt6Ng&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ DC and I met up @ Dana Point; rode north on PCH to Jamboree; right on Santiago Canyon; making a pittstop at Cook's Corner for lunch. It was a good day. After Cook's Corner, we made a left out of the parking lot on to Live Oak Canyon Road which turns into Trabuco Canyon Road. We made a right at Santa Margarita Parkway; left on Antonio until it turned into La Pata Avenue. We eventually ended the ride at the San Clemente Pier. Did I mention it was a good day? Bar - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=mEB095-AZtbxRDQ3NCOzXg&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ Cook's Corner is a local, historic spot that has its fair share of regulars, visitors, and weekend riders. This was my first visit and overall, I thought it was alright. I was surprised by how many bikes were in the parking lot; everything style under the sun. There were cruisers, sports bikes, adventure bikes, to café racers. Photo - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=wzutW2_IIbLpik9yGQeNTA&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ The vibe was chill and laid back, no harsh attitudes that I noticed; folks just hanging out. Placer order here! - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=e3IJcVIWBJkGOvmqVKTFqA&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ Cook's Corner serves a variety of pub-style food and drinks, including burgers, sandwiches, and a selection of beers. It's a great place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a cold drink. However, with that said, nothing really stood out to me on the menu. IMO, a tad $$ for a basic hamburger or simple appetizers but it is what it is... So, "When in Rome!" Patio seating - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=RST0JfpnR2uIZwffKYaUVg&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ The young lady that took my order was fast and friendly; placed my order, paid, done. The entire transaction didn't take more than a few minutes at most. Now, wait until my number is called. DC and I visited with some of his friends who were there for a "Halloween Ride." As we ate lunch, we enjoyed the live music by a cover band playing on the stage in the back. They were good! DC ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of BBQ sauce and a fountain drink. My order: Ortega Burger - Decent hamburger with two different cheeses and an ortega chili. It was okay. Photo - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=1vahM9b2wpbQ6ZVk3pgDXw&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ Fountain drink - MUG Root Beer soda; free refills Grand total + tip = $20 After our lunch, DC & I walked around for a few minutes. Cook's Corner has a rather large outdoor seating area in the back with its own separate bar as well. (Thumbs up) I was hoping to get a photo of the live band performing but they were taking a break at the time. Photo - https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=SVVv9SCDPeP0bA5agTh_og&userid=O6EBodP3Fgu_n67efSKnBQ I'm looking forward to our next ride and visit to Cook's Corner... 'Maybe for their Taco Tuesday, Spaghetti Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, or Fish Friday! Part of the enjoyment of Cook's Corner is the ride to and from. Overall rating: 3 Stars - Big Aloha! Food: 3 (Fair) Ambiance: 4 (Chill and laid back) Service: 3 (Fast and friendly) Value: 3 (A bit $$ for standard burger and appetizers)

Yelp
Love this place! Music, good drinks and the sunshine!! The bartenders/service is great too!
google avatar

Cassidy C.

Yelp
Just a couple of sport bikers crashing the cruiser spot. We had a blast listening to some fun music and eating very satisfying food. I ordered a cheeseburger, and my friends got similar items with fires. Very hearty and tasty! We went on a Wednesday, thinking there may not be a crowd there, but even in the middle of the week it was popping! Thank you for having us!
google avatar

Mona D.

Yelp
There are so many positives, where do I start? I walked in not knowing what to expect, and the bartender was great and attentive. The manager, Rhonda, introduced herself and introduced me to some of the locals. I felt very welcomed. My friend's band, Seismic Spin, played, and the vibe was amazing. Everyone was smiling and dancing. I never waited for a drink. Shout out to Kelly, the bartender, who had great pours, and the drinks were inexpensive. If you really want a Sunday Funday, go to Cooks!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
04/30/2023 This is our destination for our ride. It's a biker bar but all kinds of people are here probably because of the band. They were playing some real classics like Jusas Priest and Metallica. Bar and food are inside where cash is king but you can use your cards. Which is what I did at the food counter. Burgers are over $10 so I decided to try the Ortega Burger and ordered a side of tater tots. Toys were same price as the onion rings for $9. Soda fountain is unlimited refills since I am my own designated rider. Just follow the guy in the parking for directions because there is sort of a system to park your bike. Just not smack in the middle where nobody could get out.

David B.

Yelp
Great live entertainment and bar. Drive up here, grab a beer and enjoy. It's all good.
google avatar

Vivian K.

Yelp
I love CC even more now that we've eaten here, and spent more time! The food was EXCELLENT (hot dog, taquitos, chicken fingers), the people are super friendly, the bar inside has a Rainbow Bar & Grill vibe with old photos and headshots of longtime employees, customers, friends, and family of CC -- heartwarming. The music inside the dark and grungy bar is heavy metal, which I love. We sat at a table to eat, and got to see an awesome, CA-based country singer named Dallas Moore. A PERFECT day, absolutely LOVE this place!!
google avatar

Julia R.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I came here for food and drinks in hopes it would be fun because we have heard good things from friends. Unfortunately it wasn't a great experience. It took forever to get a drink, the bartenders were so unfriendly and just didn't seem like they wanted to work there. A short guy that works behind the bar was also incredibly creepy to my friend. I wish this place had better service and nicer staff that didn't make people uncomfortable. Thankfully the food was good and it's a nice location but probably won't be coming back.
google avatar

Mongo M.

Yelp
Love this place great food and fun! Must go on Friday Saturday fun! Say hello to everybody!
google avatar

Shawna R.

Yelp
A basic bar with basic food, you really only come here for the band and the bikers. It's a well known biker spot and we stopped here after we spent the day at born free. We were hungry and one of the girls mentioned that this place was worth the food, it wasn't. There weren't many options for me so I asked for a veggie burger protein style and a side order of sweet potato fries. My friends got a cheeseburger with fries as well as some Mac n cheese bites. The food took a while to come out as the kitchen is super small and they had a bunch of people ordering the day we came. The food finally came out, the veggie patty was ok, it was like eating a salad without any sauce, very bland. My friends said there burgers were good but the mac n cheese bites were fried with more bread than actual noodles. I wouldn't come back to eat here but I would come for the experience to hang out.
google avatar

Sandy B.

Yelp
What a fantastic place to just hangout and relax. This place is on a big lot of land with plenty of free parking in the lot and up the street. It offers live music, shows on an outdoor amphitheater, good food, and friendly people all around. The vibe is cool and fun. There are a lot of cool bikes to admire as well. Oh and close by is a fabulous walking trail (paved) that you can technically take all the way to the beach. Have fun!
google avatar

Billy F.

Yelp
Food is standard pub food, not awful. Location is great. It's a fun ride to get there. Wonderful mix of friendly people. The day we were there there were hundreds of cool motorcycles to see.
google avatar

Yelp
Good prices, food above average, good service fun place. Friendly locals, regulars and visitors. Staff always appreciative. Good parking.

Yelp
I knew this was going to be good but wow soooooooo good!!!! The burrito was exceptions and the loaded tater tots were incredible. Bite after bite made me realize what a goldmine I found close to home! Can't wait to go back

Yelp
Situated at the cusp of suburbia of Lake Forest and the nature of Trabuco Canyon is the famous and popular roadhouse biker bar, Cook's Corner located in South Orange County. It is a cute wooden structure that holds a kitchen and full bar, which is connected to a large patio area with lots of additional outdoor seating and a large stage where many live bands have played on the weekends. This is a great spot to stop for a drink and some bar food. This past weekend we stopped in for an early dinner and all enjoyed different selections of burgers and fries along with a few beers. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Love cooks corner great food great beer and great company, bartenders are dope, great place to ride to and hangout with friends , the decor is perfect for this place !!! It's an iconic bar a must checkout!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
What a fun stop! Beautiful day, great people hanging out with beautiful bikes, great music being played, just a great Saturday afternoon! We ordered a pastrami sandwich, loaded, tater tot's, and onion rings with macaroni and cheese bites and were very pleased with the taste and speed of delivery. Super friendly lady taking orders for the food, offered some great suggestions and everything worked out perfectly. While some might just consider this a biker bar, it's not! Very very nice place to stop and enjoy yourselves and enjoy the atmosphere! Highly recommend to all regardless of age! We will certainly be back! P.S. if you are a millennial poser, PLEASE don't ruin the adults times by coming here. This is a great place for mature, experienced people. Oh, if you don't like Southern rock, definitely stay away!
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
Cold beer and hot food. The band Big Rockin Daddy great musicians. The vocals was not good.

Skyler M.

Yelp
This place was awesome! The drinks were strong and the music was great. It got a little crowded, but that's to be expected on a Saturday night. Overall, a fun experience. I'd def recommend it!
google avatar

Jimmy P.

Yelp
This was my first time coming to Cook's Corner!!! The food was great, in and out quickly with the food service. Great cook! I would come again!!!
google avatar

Lee B.

Yelp
Cooks Corner is celebrating 90 years of operation. It not unusual to see 200+ motorcycles at front. Great people watching and conversations. Good bar food and prices. Live music on the weekends.

Linda S.

Yelp
Check your receipts. Register chargers more than the listed price. When questioned got a sour attitude.
google avatar

Melanie N.

Yelp
We always have the best time at Cooks. Nice people work there and fun Thursday nights line dancing!
google avatar

Dean G.

Yelp
Really fun dive bar. The food is greasy and delicious. The bartenders are fun and friendly. They have lots of live music.
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
All the above. Bartenders rude. Food sketchy I see rats cruise around. Ambiance . They barely cleaned it since the shooting. Buy sone new chairs.

Yelp
I don't mind riding out an hour and half from home just to enjoy this beautiful location. Arrived by 9am this past gloomy Sunday (4/3/22) and was lucky enough to snag a spot closest to the road - within their designated motorcycle parking area out front. Take your butt inside to order your chow at the kitchen register. The alcohol/ bar has a separate cashier. You really can't go wrong with their portions here. I went with my usual breakfast choice of canned corned beef hash, hash browns that were crispy on the outside & grilled just right- not loaded with heavy grease. Went with scrambled eggs. Grabbed my black pepper & ketchup packets located by the Jack Daniel's statue & hot water dispenser. My toasted sourdough paired well with my breakfast- especially when you just hash everything on your plate together. Wish I would've asked for another scoop of butter. Porta potty (yes, just one) is located behind the main building. First thing in the morning- it's a clean porta potty with water to rinse off your hands & toilet paper. Anything in the afternoon- could be a gamble. LOL Previous summer visits- there were quite a few merchant vendors out by the front of the main building and some can also be found near the stage area. All types of outdoor seating available- community tables; 4 tops; and stools with counter tops. Wednesday night is Spaghetti special night
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Breakfast still excellent as always. Darn good comfort food. Social distancing still in place and everyone is kind and respects each other's space. Bring your appetite and the need to get away from the daily grind.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
I love a good biker bar, and when i heard about this places years ago I've been wanting to go, and i finally did. Tons of bikes! Huge outdoor area with picnic tables and an outside bar. Live music and a dance floor. The inside part is small, but decent. TVs to watch the game. Breakfast, apps and lunch. Nothing really healthy lol, but what i tried was quite tasty. I will be back

Cody V.

Yelp
Amazing time! Honestly been to a couple bars around the country and this one is my favorite no doubt.
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
Wow, love me some Cook's corner. Oh my gosh, where do I even begin surrounded by mother nature, the food, the menu off the hook not to mention the vibes the music live bands oh my God like all the beautiful, beautiful Harley Davidson, not to mention those that are riding them, I don't know. I think I got whiplash like 10 times anyways I absolutely love Cook's corner if you've never been you better ask somebody and get your ass there pronto.
google avatar

Kenna L.

Yelp
I love this place! It's a really fun biker bar in Trabuco Canyon. Absolutely gorgeous drive/ride in. They have live bands on the weekend that are great for the whole family. The food is basically diner style food, nothing fancy. Tasty onion rings that are crispy and delicious! Friendly service, low key place to grab a quick meal and enjoy sitting outside in the sun, although they do have shade and umbrellas too! I've had their burgers, their salads, their hot dogs and they're all cooked well, not a lot of seasoning but great with mustard or your choice of condiments. I just love to come here and meet new people. Every time I have been, people are so friendly and willing to talk to strangers, strike up conversations and it's really neat to see these days!
