Some of Portland’s Top Chefs Are Leading Free Cooking Classes for People in Recovery - Eater Portland

"SE Clinton event space Cookshop will host a lineup of seriously talented chefs, all of whom are in recovery themselves: Chefs like James Beard Award winner Gabriel Rucker, Top Chef finalist Gregory Gourdet, and restaurateur Tommy Habetz will start each class talking through their personal histories with food and recovery, before leading a cooking tutorial and sitting down to a meal with all the students." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

We took a Chinese dumpling class with Chef Zach, and it was great! Lots of little tips and techniques it will be easy to incorporate at home, and an easygoing vibe in the class. There was a great mix of class demo and 1:1 instruction, as well--very helpful!

This is the most special place ever! I’ve done 2 cooking classes - one with my 4 year old and one with my 10 year old. We have all loved it! I can’t stop signing up for classes! My husband and I are excited for our date night class soon. The space is gorgeous and has a fun, relaxed vibe. The instructors are wonderful and knowledgeable. Can’t speak highly enough of it!

My daughter has been talking about hosting a bakeoff as her birthday celebration for 3 years. This year, with visiting family and friends, she led 5 teams at The Cookshop for an amazing extravaganza! We had 2 rounds of competition, and the participants went nuts in this fantastic commissary kitchen. They baked gorgeous log cakes and prepared lemon curd on stovetops. Grandparents judged for a fantastic time by all! Our daughter had the best time. Meredith was fun and easy to work with.

All cooks are welcome from novice to the experienced! I just finished their weekend intensive Kitchen Essentials class and absolutely loved it! Learning technique and mindset from Chef Luca while making some delicious and stunning meals to enjoy with the class at large was such a pleasure! It was worth every dollar spent and I am eager to put to use what I've learned. I am looking forward to my next class (laminated doughs) coming up soon! CookShop will absolutely become a regular place for me to learn and grow as a cook.

Looking for a place to gather as a team, celebrate the year we had, and learn something new; Cookstop did not disappoint. Chef Zach guided our group with knowledge, kindness, patience and humor as we learned to make dumplings and sauce. An added bonus, we learned knife skills as we chopped veggies. Our evening ended by gathering at the table; enjoying the meal we made together. ❤️ The Cookshop team follows up after the event with the recipes so you can cook at home.

If you want to eat something good this is your place. But if you want to learn how to cook something good...I will go somewhere else. I had 4 classes with 4 different instructors (I was really trying to like this place), the only instructor I recommend for learning is Leta. The rest, you will see them cook and make something delicious while you are just standing there doing nothing.

I attended a delightful event here about zero waste cooking. I was unfamiliar with the space previously and so happy that they are hosting so many events: from a food swap to meal prep classes, keeping tabs on cookshop will help you be a better cook, grow your food community, and learn nutritious, healthy tips to improve your relationship to cooking!

My husband and I did a pasta making class here a few weeks ago. I thought for the price of the class and having to pay $12 for a glass of wine that there would be more provided, such as an appetizer and dessert with the meal. Class started at 6pm and we did not sit down to eat until after 8pm, we were not offered any snacks and we are all starved. The instructor seemed a bit aloof and not really into teaching the class. Upon sitting down to eat, they wanted everyone to pay for their wine and I thought it was rude that everyone had to leave their hot meal to go pay. You could tell that the staff wanted to get home and get us out of there as fast as they could. I am a chef and have conducted cooking classes for years, there was no sense of camaraderie at this place, did have a good vibe. Best of luck to y'all!

Yelp
What a fun night learning to make ravioli! This was a private event with 12 of us. Chef Zach was awesome. He had a great energy and was super helpful and knowledgeable. The setup of making it and then being able to share a lovely meal with our group was super enjoyable. I was able to purchase wine. Kind of spendy per glass for what you get. But I was glad to have it nonetheless. We were able to take to go containers home with the leftovers.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at the pasta making class and when we had an issue signing up for a dumpling class, the customer service was incredible. We can't wait to take our next class here!

Yelp
I took the Pretzel Fest class taught by chef Luca Ponti. The class was absolutely wonderful. Luca is a skilled baker and teaches a fun class. I am German and grew up on Pretzels. The Pretzels we made in his class, brought me back home because they smelled and tasted like the real ones I eat in Germany. Luca, thank you.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood! This is such a beautiful space, and Meredith is a friendly and knowledgeable teacher. My 8-year-old son spent a week here at one of Cookshop's summer cooking camps, and he had a great time and made/ate lots of yummy, kid-friendly food. And bonus: he came home with samples of the things they had made during the day, so the rest of our family could enjoy them as well. We will definitely be signing up for more classes at Cookshop (for both my son and me).
