Where to Eat and Drink in the NoMo Neighborhood

"This hidden brewery is a fun place to try several kinds of beer, as Cooper River offers up five-ounce pours for just $2. The large, comfortable space has an outdoor patio, and food vendors like Big Bone BBQ will often be stationed out front." - Parker Milner

Google
PJ was an amazing host and the beer was equally great! We loved the visit and will definitely be back. Cooper River brewing still has that cozy, neighborhood brewery feel that most of the larger production breweries have lost. Highly recommend to anyone in Charleston!

Nick S

Google
Stopped here on a Sunday with some friends and the beer was great. They had a lot of cool things to do like board games and table games. They even had a popcorn machine. Awesome bartender, she mixed two of the beers together and called it a PJ, I would highly recommend it if you stop in

CREOLE SCREAM

Google
Very good full-bodied beer. Not easy to find, but if you miss that, you missed one of the best craft breweries in Charleston. They master their craft. Clean taproom, friendly staff and not so crowded. I recommend this place.

Bye B

Google
So glad we drove here only to find the place closed despite Google saying it’s open

Krystle Stephens

Google
I came here for a birthday party. The parking could be better, but the brewery itself is clean and inviting on the inside. Most importantly, the beer is good. And if you can order food, do it. I recommend the saison.

Nina Fecanin

Google
Wonderful brewery! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, dog friendly, spacious and clean taproom, and delicious beers. Our favorites were the Pumpkin Golden Ale and Orange Blonde Ale.

Jackie Kenworthy

Google
If you are looking for a "Cheers" atmosphere this is it!! PJ is so welcoming and makes everyone feel like family. The beer is brewed with care and so flavorful. It is dog friendly and the popcorn machine is such a treat. If you are looking for a brewery while visiting Charleston, this is the best choice.

Google
Nice little hidden gem! I can’t remember the woman’s name that bartends there but she’s awesome! Very knowledgeable about the brewery scene and the story behind them. They are dog friendly and have games you can play.

Yelp
Brewery is closed as of June 2025, after almost 10 years was a great run. Will still be brewing

Yelp
Nice little brewery with a chill vibe! Bartender was helpful in helping you pick the best beer for you! Lots of variety, everything from Ipa to shandy, blonde ale to seltzers, literally something for everyone! They do not have food but do have a popcorn machine that you can help yourself too.

Yelp
We always enjoy a visit to this Charleston brewery. There are solid beers on tap and choices for folks who are not beer fans plus non-alcoholic beverage choices, too. There are a few snacks to buy and seating is available inside and outside. The outside area has Adirondack chairs and picnic tables. We usually play a couple of rounds of corn hole while we are there. The staff is always nice and this brewery is connected by a a back deck to another spot - 2 breweries without having to drive anywhere. Their glassware makes for a nice souvenir, too. Whether local or visiting, this is a top spot to put on a brewery tour.

Yelp
Drew was the nastiest server I've never encountered. He gave me the wrong specials and had an attitude anytime I asked him about the menu. he didn't care about my questions or the menu in general, overall could've been a way better experience but he made it awful. great potential but terrible serving experience.

Yelp
Cooper River Brewery is another industrial warehouse brewery hidden off the main road. This is a GPS place place because signage is limited and until you completely pull into the parking lot, you won't see it. There were a number of people and a dog or two outside playing cornhole when we drove up. Food trucks and live music are a thing here but weren't on site when we stopped by. There is a large bar indoors with huge windows overlooking the brewery. The bar was blocked off for the most part, to maintain Covid-19 social distancing. Cooper River offers a big selection of beers, primarily ESBs, Stouts, and Nitros. Among my favorites but the 90+ degrees temperatures made those too heavy for drinking. We had two pints: Golden Ale: Light and easy, a good "all around" beer to enjoy anytime Orange Blonde Ale: A classic American Blonde Ale blended with citrus orange for a nice "bite" on the finish. Again, a very good summer sipper. The two guys behind the bar were friendly and chatty about their beer! I even bought t-shirt there!

Yelp
First time here and we were there for the Lobster Truck that was there for the day. Turns out I did not get lobster and got the Nachos from next door at the Brewlab. But this review is for CRB so lets talk about that. They were also having something to do with dogs this day so plenty of mutts everywhere which my wife thought of as a huge bonus. The place was cool and the inside bar lovely. And we are now big fans of the blonde ale with orange flavor. I bought a case and plan on coming back for more. My wife loves it and she is not a huge beer drinker.

Yelp
Unfortunate to visit another sub par Charleston brewery. The outdoor area is cool, but you can't really see it from the neighboring streets. Hidden spot and difficult to walk to.

Yelp
What a great place for an afternoon flight. Even with Covid, this brewery has a great outdoor seating area. They even have fire pits! Pet & kid friendly. Their property is pretty well hidden with a fence, so it's nice to sit outside with some privacy from the roads. CRB has a GREAT beer selection! I am more of stout & porter girl, but their Irish Red took me by surprise!! The Nitro did end up winning this round, but I'll be back for more. Bonus points for the really cute flight boards! 4 stars were given, because unfortunately there's a lot of noise from the busy road outside their privacy fence. I know that's not something they can fix, but it might be important to someone else.

Yelp
We couldn't have had a better time at Cooper River Brewing. Jaime and Gloria were fantastic, and the beer was incredible. Friendly and engaging service, great swag, and fun conversations with the owner. We stayed longer than anticipated and will go back again when we are in town.

Yelp
Not a fan of my visit to Cooper River Brewing. Boyfriend and I walked in to check this place out about an hour before closing [breweries in Charleston close way too early]. We both got a flight of beer so we could see what Cooper River had to offer. After finishing my flight, I wanted to get a pint before leaving. I thought that my empty flight tray would be a clear indication that I wanted another or was ready to close out but I was wrong. I finally was able to sample a beer and after waiting again I asked the bar-back. I thought that the bar-back was the hardest working one there; unfortunately, he was too young to serve beer so he took my order and let the bartender know that I was ready for round 2. The beer was okay, nothing really stood out to me. I liked the Strong Ale, Stout, Porter and Watermelon Wheat Why the 2-star rating? There was a guy behind the bar drinking, I am going to assume it was one of the owners, serving up beers to all of his friends. I noticed that he had a bit of an attitude with others behind the bar which I did not like. If you are behind the bar during business hours, you are working and he did not once come over to see if I needed anything. If you are there drinking, stay out from behind the bar and let your bartenders do their job.

Yelp
Finding this place is going to be the first task... It's right where Rutledge Ave begins at the very north of the peninsula. Then you take right turns --like they are going out of style-- and it is tucked away before the dead end on Mechanic St. (Not the dead-end bridge though, drive-by that...) Anyway, as far as breweries go, this has some promising aspects. It's more like a bar, so that prevents your friend's veto vote who doesn't like anything but perfect weather for brewery visits. It's also, technically, on the peninsula. The taproom is long and narrow which has large windows looking into the brewery space. All good things. How about the beer? The beer isn't bad. I feel as if they played it safe. It's not too adventurous, which means it could appeal to a larger audience... All the beers I tried were smooth--which is important--but to a craft beer guy I would prefer more complexity. I will say their I-IPA was the best there even though I'm not a big IPA fan. Probably important to take into account they just opened, and more experimentation is in the works. I'll stay tuned...

Yelp
The beer has greatly improved since the first time we visited about a year ago. If a brewery continues to work to improve with each batch, I'll always support. The IPA is wonderful and I also like their orange infused beer for a lighter choice. They frequently have live music and food trucks. It is by the bridge to no where and by a warehouse and you have to pull all the way into the parking lot before you even see signs of a brewery. Inside is a large bar and a few tables with glass windows to the brewery. Outside picnic tables are setup for nice days.

Yelp
I've been to Cooper River a handful of times now and always have a great time. The beer list has really expanded over time (as to be expected) and they've come a really long way since they first opened! I'm a huge fan of the orange infused blonde ale, which is perfect for spring and as the weather starts to warm up. The space is very new and clean, the bar area is expansive, the restrooms are plentiful and always clean and stocked, and I love that they often have food trucks stop by (since they don't serve food). A great addition to the local craft beer scene!

Yelp
On a scale of 1 to chill, most breweries are on the chill side. Cooper River achieves that level effortlessly. Sometimes you'll walk into a brewery and think "Man, these people tried hard to achieve the 'barely moved into a warehouse' look", like the brewery equivalent of shabby chic. Not Cooper River. They've got the concrete floor, windows running the length of the building to provide a glimpse into the working part of the brewery, and a mishmash of tables and chairs to seat their visitors. Handpainted names on the wall signal where you can find their beers outside of the brewery (very cool touch). The beers were good (although my sister was sad that her favorite from last summer was only available in a 50 oz bottle) and I really, really liked the watermelon. I'd like to come back with a bigger group or when they have some sort of event since I think this would be a great venue with more people. One major plus is that there always seem to be cute dogs hanging around!

Yelp
I somewhat stumbled upon this brewery because I had never previously heard of it. It is a lesser-known one in Charleston and is nestled in a out of the way location. But don't let the humble location fool you. The beer is excellent and some of the best in Charleston. The tap room is nice and open and the servers are very helpful. Grab a flight if you want to try some of everything.

Yelp
Using Yelp app I stumbled across this local brewery in Charleston (Thanks Yelp!). Amazing local brewery! I am a Fan (However Google Maps took me the long way around (got lost and had to find it manually) to get to this place but was worth it once I arrived). Pros: Great local craft beer Amazing staff Pet Friendly Parking is easy they have a lot Good local band playing Wood Fired Pizza Truck out front. Off the beaten path for sure. Cons: Since I am normally in town during the week, I would like to see them open more during the week so I can enjoy more beers with them! Overall: One of my favorite local breweries in Charleston! I definitely will be coming back to visit whenever I'm in town. If you are in the area you should visit as well!

Yelp
Kudos to a here-unnamed beertender who generously spared me social ostracism after I inadvertently crashed a private party during the Christmas holiday season - just waltzed on in and ordered a beer. Said beer already having been poured, he shepherded me to an out of the way spot on the patio to enjoy it. The Black IPA was well worth the social risk. Great beer, awesome logo, home of the beertender of the year.

Yelp
Some beer drinking friends of ours invited us along to check out some breweries on Saturday night, and since we were starting with Cod Fathers dinner before hand we decided to join them. This place was just a perfect mix of low key and friendly. Bonus, they serve a couple of wines so that helps us non-beer drinkers out a bit. But, maybe a couple of lights, showing us where to pull in would help. Black signs on a dark night in a dark alley was a pain, especially if your first time there was after sunset.

Yelp
Been wanting to check out Cooper River Brewing for a while, finally stopped by one Sunday afternoon. Hidden in a warehouse area of upper Charleston peninsula, but finally found it. The interior was just as expected, bar and area for drinking and the actual brewery was on other side of windows. Took a minute to get beers ordered, but they were worth it. My eyes spotted the Scottish Red Ale and I had to have it. Loved it, very drinkable, low ibu, with a slight sweet finish. We also enjoyed the Golden Ale and my husband liked the Watermelon Wheat. Nice atmosphere here, & while here we ran into another Yelper who was enjoying his Sunday afternoon too. CRBC has a decent menu of beers, and I appreciate a place that has good selection of ales & stouts and is not so IPA focused. Nice brewery with good beer, Charleston has another good one for all to enjoy.

Yelp
At first glance, everything looks great. It's very clean and there is ample seating. They even have food brought in from local businesses or food trucks. Blink and things change a bit. The beer is less than par. I tried their two most popular beers and they were simple and without flavor. I'm all for second chances but the first impression wasn't great.
google avatar

Yelp
Cool vibe right behind Brewlab so if you go to one might as well do both! Bartenders were awesome and we enjoyed the beer we tried
google avatar

Yelp
Breweries and industrial areas go well together in Charleston, because here's another one up on the north side of the peninsula. In their 7,500 square foot renovated warehouse space, they have a huge bar, wide windows to see all of their American-made brewery equipment, and a back patio with picnic tables. My favorite beer pairing is definitely pizza, and another great reason to head over to Cooper River is that Dough Boyz is there almost every weekend. What to try: Watermelon Wheat or Orange-Infused Blonde Ale
google avatar

Yelp
Long bar. Music tonight. Brewery apparatus easily viewed from the bar. Good beer selection. Patio seating is also a nice option.

Yelp
Cooper River Brewing is a dog-friendly brewery located off the beaten path downtown. We went on a Saturday night without food trucks, and the barstools were half-full. We started with some 5 oz pours: Golden Ale Watermelon Wheat Inaugural IPA Porter West Coast IPA Summer IPA We also had an 8 oz pour of their bourbon barrel aged ale. All of the beers were fine, but nothing whatsoever stood out. Apart from the watermelon wheat and bourbon barrel aged ale, the other pours were bland and standard. I was surprised by the excessive amount of foamy head on these pours. The tiny flight-style glasses had a solid 1" of foamy head inside the glass, with about half of the porter's flight glass being foam. I know some head on beer is a good thing, but I couldn't help but wonder if that tall of head on a short little flight glass was an indication of something gone awry, such as too high of a pouring temperature. Half of a glass should not be foamy head. In the future, I hope Cooper River takes some risks and brews some beers that set themselves apart from the competition. Also, check into why beers are pouring with an excessive amount of foamy head. Too high temperature? Poor pouring? Dirty lines?

Yelp
Week 3 and Cooper River is well on its way to becoming a Charleston brewery staple. Place is super busy already and, according to the staff, has been since opening night, despite the off-the-beaten path location in N Charleston. Why? They are making great beers in a great space! Locals are definitely supporting the business, which is awesome! I tried all the beers and they were all very good. My favorite was the Black IPA, which doesn't at all taste like a Black IPA-- more like a well-hopped brown ale-- but it's definitely worth trying if you like a well balanced IPA. Their golden ale is also well above average for an extensively drinkable golden. I love the yeasty finish - and rank it up there for a great go-to, lighter beer, despite my preference for IPAs and strong ales. These guys are churning new brews out weekly, so come in and see what they're up to! Games are also playing on the TVs (on mute) with perfect-level GREAT indie music playing in the background: makes for a great atmosphere at the long, wooden bar that brings us drinkers together in unity. Come try these guys out: I think they're definitely here to stay!

J W.

Yelp
They always have at least two beers I fall in love with each time I go. Bartenders are great and fun to talk with.

Yelp
Great food and great beer. Set back location. 4 stars because it could use more activities to accommodate groups. Still a great place

Yelp
Awesome, affordable place. Every beer I tasted was fantastic. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I have to say, this was totally unexpected and completely enjoyable for a beautiful Sunday in Charleston. I'd seen a post on FB for an ALL 80s music Sunday live by a string trio, which was enough to sell me. Throw in some quality Cooper River brews and this had the makings for an absolute epic day. The weather was cooperating for a February winter afternoon so it was time to make my first trip to Cooper River. We were not disappointed at all and I'm holding a star back, only because it took too long to get my hands on my first delicious beer. I probably sat for close to 15 minutes before the very charming beertender acknowledged us. In Charleston, this is not a deal breaker but I expect at least a smile and "be right with you" soon after sitting. Didn't happen but it didn't ruin the day. The local beer scene is so up and coming that each tasting room offers a little different feeling but the last thing anyone wants when visiting the home of so many great beers is to feel like an outsider. Early acknowledgement gives guests a very welcome feeling Beers are fantastic. The sunshine outside was life changing and the music, well the music should literally be an EVERY SUNDAY event. Or at least 2nd Sunday (or routine) and give it a catchy name (2nd Sunday 80s Revolution) because I think if word was spread better than only FB, this would be a great event for the Gen Xers like myself. The Daniel Patrick 80s Acoustical Trio - is honestly the local BOMB. I enjoyed their music so much, I did not want to leave and it made up for any perceived slight by the bar staff upon arrival. This was my first trek out to Cooper River and will most certainly not be my last. Matter of fact, we left to go enjoy a beer at "The Barrel" on Folly Rd. and the line was so long there, I kicked myself for ever leaving Cooper River. UGH - I may never learn. See you soon Jamie and thank you.
google avatar

Britt B.

Yelp
Cooper River is a great brewery a bit off the beaten path downtown. I have visited a number of times for various reasons - consistently delicious beer is always at least part of the reason! They oftentimes have great local food trucks outside and rockin' live music inside - and if nothing else is going on, there's always Connect4 and dart! We especially love visiting on Wednesday evenings for team trivia! I've enjoyed every beer I've had here, but the Orange Blonde and Tropical definitely top my list.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
My husband and I love this brewery! The beer is great and the people that work there are awesome! It's a good place to go if you want to get a beer and chill. They have a good tap room with lots of seating. It's also a good place to watch a game with lots of TVs. I had my husband's birthday party there and it was an awesome time and perfect setting for beer lovers!

Keith S.

Yelp
Love the variety and quality of the beer. Staff is knowledgeable and very willing to accommodate any request. Will definitely be returning for more tastings. The golden ale and the orange infused were a big hit with my crowd. I could see the golden ale becoming my every day drinker of choice. Thanks Cooper River.
google avatar

Honey B.

Yelp
Cooper River Brewing is the latest brewery to break ground downtown. I stopped in with some friends to see what the fuss was about. What the brewery lacks in curb appeal, they definitely make up for with interior charm. The space is inviting and comfortable, and beer is very good. Their Inaugural IPA is definitely worth checking out and I found their Stout to be delicious as well. Stew all this with a great staff and you're in for a good time!
google avatar

Brandon T.

Yelp
I have been to Cooper River multiple times. When they first opened the beers were ok but they are way better now. I enjoyed the IPA last night but have tried many others that are delicious too. The actual brewery and bar is very nice. They also get food trucks and live music regularly. Keep up the good work and I look forward to my next pint.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
So I yelped this place and drove over, glad I did. Not exactly an easy place to get to but worth the effort. I had the Session (nice and hoppy) and the Tropical ( smooth great flavor). Bartender had strong people skills and everyone was laid back and cool. I'll definitely come back.

Evan B.

Yelp
Stumbled on Cooper River during an SC vacation brew and it was a great experience! It just so happened that the Brewery was technically closed the day we rolled through, but the owner was happy to let us in for a tasting. Beer was great and you can't beat a Brewery with a Great Blue Heron label!!
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! The taproom geniuses are very knowledgeable about thei product. Friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
Excellent service: the bartenders were very attentive and friendly! The beer was excellent, especially the cider! Highly recommend...although the Uber/Lyft driver might have a hard time finding this place.
google avatar

Carolyn H.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a flight. Nice large, air conditioned tasting room with windows onlooking the brewing in the next room. The bar stools are made from tractor seats, clever idea, but not comfortable at all. Bartender was friendly and helpful. Our flight consisted of: GOLDEN ALE, PORTER, STOUT and EXTRA SPECIAL BITTER. Was surprised that neither of us liked any of the beers. I didn't even finish the stout. We know British beers, we've lived there nearly 10 years, so they're totally missing the mark. Might try back at a later date and try a different flight. If so, will update review.
google avatar

Charles K.

Yelp
This brewery has become a mainstay for me anytime I'm in the Charleston area. It has a cool vibe, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer, and the beer itself...Well, it's great! Cooper River Brewing has definitely become one of my favorites.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
I'm giving it three stars because although service was done with a smile, it wasn't done often. We were there as a group of four people, and we unfortunately only had one round. There was a minimal amount of attention that was given to the back part of the bar in the hour and a half that we spent drinking our one beer each, and although we fully enjoyed the product, namely the Scotch Ale which was in my opinion one of the top five beers I've ever tasted, we opted to get a growler and leave. And checking out.... Well, it took 45 minutes just to get a bartender's attention so we could pay our tab. All and all a great beer selection with incredible taste, but having only two bartenders who primarily worked the same end of the bar was pretty disappointing.
google avatar

Ethan F.

Yelp
Golden Ale is up my alley. Chill atmosphere. It's off the beaten path, not many people here. I played a game of darts and drank some beer.
google avatar

Gabi W.

Yelp
Great beer! Came here because we were looking for a brew tour and the owner took us on a private tour! We loved it! Beer was amazing!

Eric G.

Yelp
Air conditioned and spacious. Ales only, but they are good! A little tough to find but definitely a must stop on any tour of the Charleston brewery scene.

Steven G.

Yelp
Great selection of beers. This is a place that you need to visit in Charleston. The IIPA is phenomenal! Great owners that will recommend a beer and care about customers.
