2 Days in Rio de Janeiro

"In the aforementioned historic military fort, the emblematic Confeitaria Colombo has opened an outlet for breakfast, pastries — such as its popular “pastel de nata” — and tea and coffee for customers ranging from couples to groups of female friends who flock here to eat with one of the city’s best views as their backdrop. Once you're suitably replete, it is well worth learning more about the construction of the fort, which was built in 1914 to strengthen the protection of Guanabara Bay." - The MICHELIN Guide

Few minutes walk from the Copacabana beach and close to the Fairmont Hotel, this fort has a museum, lots of cafes and beautiful views of the sea. You will enjoy a nice stroll, having something to eat at the cafes enjoying the nice scenery and learn a little bit of history or this fort and other forts in surrounding Rio that were used to protect the country back in the day from other groups such as the French.

It was nice surprise, I didn't expect it to be a lovely site to visit with museum and an awesome view of Copacabana beach and ocean. I would visit it some 2 hours before sunset. Entry ticket is by cash only R$10 per adult.

Amazing spot for late afternoon. You will access the restricted side of the ocean. Beautifully shaped rocks . Many cafes available inside with sea view . You can sit and relax . There is a museum inside and you can get to the top of a huge canon . The toilet needs more care.

Had a nice drink with a nice view of Rio de Janeiro at Cafe 18 do Forte. Also saw a lot of people enjoying some tasty food, prices are a bit higher but lovely place to eat something and have a good rink

There are huge cannon, small cannons, and ammunitions displaced used to protect the Fort on the Copacabana Beach. The beach is beautiful overview from the Fortress.

For an unknown reason the tickets were free the day we visit. But even paying the entrance fee this place is worth your money. If you like learning about history this is definitely a place for you.

Google
Lovely spot to watch the sunset with great views of Copacabana and the coastline. There’s a small museum (in Portuguese) that gives some interesting historical context, and it was very cool to see how the old military gun operates. Entry is around $2 USD—cash only—so bring some local currency. A peaceful and scenic place to explore away from the crowds.

I'm all about castles and forts, and this one met the bar! It's easily accessible from either of the main beaches in Rio right on the corner of both. The entry price is beyond cheap, and the fort itself offers a fantastic bit of history and is accessible allowing you to see a good chunk both inside and on top. Highly recommend if you're in Rio! There's also a cafe with some food options offering wonderful views of Copacabana beach.

Yelp
The museum is at the southern end of the Copacabana, and where the Colombo is. I think most people going there is for the cafes and meals.  The Fort charges a nominal fee to get in and they don't take credit card. When we asked if USD would do, the guard kindly let us in. Thank you. The ground is neatly kept. We walked around briefly after lunch. It's scene.

Yelp
Fort of Copacabana offers a beautiful view of Copacabana and the ocean and with it's spectacular 14 in guns it offered adequate protection as well This museum is free to all military personnel from around the world which is a nice touch for military travelers

Yelp
Great evening activity for anyone in the Copacabana area. They charge an admission feel to enter and walk around, but it's worth it. There are two cafes inside which appeared quite busy - we had already eaten, so we didn't try them out. The tables for the restaurants had a great view, though, and sipping a nice cold one would have been fun on a hot evening. The views from this fort are incredible - make sure you walk all over the grounds to see for yourself - we preferred the views from the large boulder at the end of the small peninsula, as we were able to see all of Copacabana and look out into the blue ocean, all the while enjoying a nice breeze. It can get a bit crowded in the evenings, but it's well worth the stop, especially if you are venturing into Copacabana later!

Yelp
I feel this is such an underrated gem lying between Copacabana and Ipanema. Don't get me wrong, this is no sugarloaf, but I was staying in Copacabana and the short walk to the fort was BEYOND worth it considering the astounding views and classy architecture. Not to mention, this is one of the few places in Rio you don't have to worry about someone robbing you because it's held down by the military. For a mere 6 reais, this is definitely worth seeing. Best case scenario: have a coffee at the Fort's cafe which has an outdoor seating area. Just be forewarned, there is often a long wait to sit outside. You can read my thoughts about the cafe itself above.

Yelp
Nice shaded area perfect for a stroll and a few photos. It'll cost you- R$6 for adults and R$3 for students like me (thank goodness the $150,000 I'm paying for my MBA is getting me a R$3 discount). You can take panoramic photos of Copacabana and you can check out the museum, which is all in Portuguese. Some of the soldiers were cute, and I felt bad that they had to wear so much despite the heat. There were also a couple of cafes/restaurants with outdoor seating near the water that looked very pleasant.

Yelp
Forte de Copacabana is ideal for a coffee in the morning (after 10am when they open) or an afternoon beer. While I haven't actually explored the grounds, what I enjoy most is take in the gorgeous view from either of the two cafés (Colombo is more popular, and rightly so). For R$6 you gain entrance to the fort and wander around. There you'll see young men in military gear doing their required 1 year of service. While they might not see much action these days, nearly 100 years ago rebellious Brazilian officers turned the cannons onto Rio itself! Battleships from São Paulo and Minas Gerais came to the rescue. Imagine the irony: a fort that sought to protect Copacabana beach and the harbor into Rio de Janeiro was threatening to take the city down.

Yelp
Great place to visit right in between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. It has some exhibitions on the inside, but my favorite part was the views of Copacabana and Pão de Açucar. We got a table at Confeiteria Colombo and enjoyed the view while having some snacks. Definitely worth a visit if you are around. The entrance fee is six reais per person.

Yelp
It 's ideal for enjoying breakfast watching the wonderful view of the city, has interesting exhibits and shops of articles about Brazil.

Yelp
Only r$6 to get in and the view is great! You get a clear sight of the entire Copacabana beach, sugar loaf, as well as arpoafor view point.
