Copper Chimney - Review - West Portal - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Copper Chimney in West Portal might not be in the upper echelon of Indian food, but when we want chicken korma and palak paneer on a moment's notice, this is our go-to on this side of the city. The curries are smooth and flavorful and the naan is soft enough that it feels like a brand-new blanket, but some things like the chana masala could use a bit more of a kick. Service is quick and to the point, which is exactly what you want when you’re looking for a quick in-and-out meal." - Ricky Rodriguez

San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings

"Copper Chimney is a white-tableclothed Indian spot in West Portal (adding to the list of notable West Portal openings this year like Elena’s). Expect a menu of pakora, biryani, and butter chicken." - ricky rodriguez, julia chen 1

I order earlier lamb biryani and samosa.! The food is good. Spicy savory. Ordered again this time the $18 dollar combo chicken. Hands down probably the best indian food in san francisco! Its pretty affordable! Nice & good people and i would reccomend it to my family and friends.!

Generally very good food (we got all vegan food) with friendly service in a comfortable setting.

Hands down, one of the best Indian food spots I’ve tried! The butter chicken was rich and flavorful, the naan was warm and fluffy, and don’t even get me started on the biryani — pure perfection. Everything tasted super fresh and had that real homemade feel. The vibes were cozy, and the staff were super friendly too. If you’re craving something spicy, comforting, and delicious, this place is a must!

Google
Amazing Indian food with rich flavors and fresh ingredients! The service was warm and attentive, making us feel right at home. Cozy ambiance and generous portions at great prices. A must-visit for Indian food lovers! Highly recommend!

Google
I visited this place with a high hope that west portal will finally have decent Indian restaurant and I am so glad that this place opened in my neighborhood. Chicken tikka masala was perfect, it was creamy but not overly creamy which I could taste other ingredients and spices . The chicken was tender, smokey. Lamb vidaloo was also amazing flavorful. Both dishes were perfectly seasoned , not too salty or spicy . We didn’t order Briyani but saw the table next us ordered them and they looked pretty delicious. I am excited to come back to this place to try other dishes !

Google
We were so close to getting take out but we decided to dine in. And we had a great time. Fantastic appetizer, all the staff would refill our waters if it was low, the main dish was so tasty. Highly recommend

My new favorite Indian in San Francisco. The staff are so kind and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The music=immaculate. Lamb tikka masala and chicken madras were perfect and creamy. Portions were perfect.

Google
This food was outstanding and the service matched it! We have lived in San Francisco for three years and have been on the hunt for the best Indian food. Tonight, we tried this place out and our search has officially stopped! We’re so excited to keep coming back.

Yelp
We had a great meal at Copper Chimney. We went in with a friend for an early dinner on a Sunday night and it was bustling inside. Service was warm and prompt. We ordered butter chicken, the lamb curry special, spinach paneer, rice and garlic naan. Everything was delicious - I'm not usually a big fan of lamb but that dish ended up being one of my favorites and I didn't find it too gamey. The butter chicken was flavorful, creamy, and the chicken was tender. Garlic naan was light and flavorful, just the right amount of garlic. I appreciated that the serving dishes were preheated so the food stayed nice and hot throughout the meal. We also enjoyed snacking on the complimentary papadums while figuring out what to order. We're looking forward to going back and trying more dishes, but it will be tempting to just replicate our previous order!

Yelp
I ordered take out from here, so I can only speak to the food. Upon waking into the restaurant, people behind the counter greeted us with smile, so I would assume they had great service if you were eating in. I ordered chicken tikka masala. The sauce was really good, but since they use white meat, the meat was very dry. Wish they had an option for dark meat... Their Naan was good too, not the best but definitely better than average. I'll definitely come back again!

Yelp
When we saw another new opening in the West Portal neighborhood, we couldn't resist trying it out. They just opened on Thurs 8/26. A bright clean interior with white table cloth settings and subtle Indian paintings on the walls. Staff were friendly and welcoming. After we ordered we received complimentary papadam with mango chutney sauce. Here's what we ordered: The chicken tika masala - $16.99 was good The butter chicken - $16.99 was creamy and flavorful Palak paneer - $15.99 good size portion. Everything came out hot. Garlic naan - $3.99 was light and crispy and quite big Mango lassi - $5.99 Kheer rice pudding - $5.99 was creamy and delicious. Overall, we had a great meal and will be back soon to try other menu items. A great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
I wouldn't come back here. As an Indian this food is very mediocre but worse than that is the service. After 15 minutes we had to ask for menus. You literally have to keep asking for EVERYTHING. We placed our order appetizers and mains. The food kept coming out in the wrong order. Main dishes 1 at a time BEFORE the apps. The plain rice didn't even come until we were halfway thru our meal. The Samosas came towards the middle of the meal. We asked them to take the mains back as we wanted the apps first but they didn't care and responded "We are only human" and walked away. Everyone in this restaurant needs to be educated in customer service and the proper order of operation. They make you feel like they are doing you a favor by allowing you to eat here. I would never come back.

Yelp
First visit to Copper Chimney in West Portal. The freshness of all the food, including the naan, stood out. Not a cliche - you will notice immediately! Took home the Aloo Gohbi, Bengan Bharta, and Karahi Paneer, all 'spicy,' Thanks for satisfying the crave!

Yelp
Food was really delicious and the restaurant was cute and clean. You can see into the kitchen, an open concept. The owners were very friendly.

Yelp
We tried Copper Chimney, a new neighborhood Indian restaurant, this week and loved it! I am Indian myself and felt the flavors were very authentic. My favorite dishes were the chicken tikka masala and the samosa, both prepared to perfection. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Got takeout from this new neighborhood spot and thoroughly enjoyed it. Had the chicken tikka masala, samosa, and onion/garlic/plain naan. The CTM was one of the best I've had and included plenty of chicken. Highly recommend Cooper Chimney for quality Indian cuisine.

Yelp
The highlight for me was the hari chutney (cilantro) the best I've ever had!!!! Mutter paneer twas spicy and lots of peas!!! Samosas perfect Mango lassi super fire Kind service Very nice paintings on wall, gorgeously decorated, would sit there to eat

Yelp
Tasty new Indian spot in West Portal. This will be my new go-to Indian place. The food is flavorful, nuanced, and light for Indian. Ordered the samosas, chicken tikka masala, daily special goat curry, side of rice, naan, and galub jaman to top it off as dessert. Samosas were well spiced, buttery dough, and fried but not greasy. The chicken tikka masala had balanced seasoning, not oily at all, and the chicken breast chunks were well-sized. Goat curry was flavorful and the bones even had marrow in it, adding to the taste. Naan was light, crispy, and not at all doughy. Galub jaman was sweet as it should be and small so the sweetness was not overpowering. Copper Chimney is my new go-to!! They do catering too so I'm going to try that out as well.

Yelp
Super service. Friendly staff. We had an event catered from Copper Chimney and the owner and his staff were great. Everyone loved the food, especially the kheer.

Yelp
We ordered at the restaurant for take out. The service was very nice, helpful and wanted to make sure we were pleased. The food was excellent even with takeout. The flavors were complex, had depth and I was curious what region of India there food is from. We had chana masala, tandoori fish, a shrimp dish and chicken dish. All dishes were delicious and it is our new place for Indian food. We are so happy they are on West Portal. We may eat there next time - - open to both dining in an take out

Yelp
This has been our new go to spot. The food is solid and very comforting. Everything we have tried has been really good including the tiki masala chicken and lamb, butter chicken, chicken biryani, lamb korma, all the naans, the paneers. The price point is very reasonable for what you get. Great value for sure! Service is great and the staff is very friendly. I am looking forward to my next visit to explore something new.

Yelp

Yelp
Too much oil in everything. One would get high cholesterol and go to the grave in a hurry if they consume food seasoned in such large quantity of oil. Looks like they want disguise the actual taste in the oil, since one does not get the feeling of uncooked spices, or they are amateur cooks that they have. Professionals will never use this much oil ever because they want the customer to savor the well cooked spices.

Lane L.

Yelp
So delicious! We tried the chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, butter chicken, samosas, and garlic naan. We enjoyed it all. Can't wait to return.

Alan D.

Yelp
Ordered to go. Since they just opened, weren't busy yet so there was no wait. Super clean with an open kitchen concept. They do have a high chair, so family friendly. 1) Chai tea. Very good but small portion for the price. Maybe they have free refills for those dining in? 2) Roti: Mine was a little burnt so I didn't finish it. 3) Naan: I preferred this to roti. Not as thick and fluffy as some that I have had. Those are the negatives. Chicken Tikka Masala was amazing and why it jumps to 5 stars. The spices and seasoning are really well done. It's not too oily. Texture and consistency was spot on. It reminded me more of something you get from Taj Compton Place than a neighborhood restaurant. It's that good! I tried the mild and it was a step lower in spiciness from Pakwan. I also had the eggplant which was delicious, again notable for the sense of being less oily than other restaurants. This was solid, but it really was the chicken tikka masala that was a surprise in how much better it was compared to the normal expectation. All in all, it seems like a great addition to West Portal. I will be back.

Yelp
This place is fantastic, great, clean and friendly service. We ordered chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and chicken biryani.Let me tell you can't go wrong with this food,it was tasty and fresh. For sure will be back again.

Yelp
So happy to have new restaurants in West Portal but was disappointed in our takeout order. Food was overly salty and also under seasoned for Indian. You'd do much better at the other neighborhood choices.

Lionel Y.

Yelp
Tried this new Indian Restaurant in West Portal with friends. Food was delicious. The place is clean and service is excellent. Highly recommend if you like tasty Indian food. Definitely will be back.

Yelp
Copper Chimney is a great casual dining addition to West Portal and I hope it does well. Friendly service, good food, good portions, good prices. I like that it's open early enough to pop into for lunch or grab early takeout after leaving the muni station. We enjoyed lunch here (chicken tikka masala, chana masala, fresh tasty garlic naan) and will definitely be back.
