The 21 Best Barbecue Restaurants For LA Road Trips - Eater LA

"Barbecue restaurants line Highway 395 as it climbs north on the eastern side of the Sierra mountain range, but none are as famous as Copper Top. Once considered to be the most popular barbecue restaurant in the state (according to Yelp, anyway), this longtime staple serves up smoky ribs and lots of tri-tip with plenty of cowboy accoutrements." - Farley Elliott

If you are driving by here and not stopping you are out of your mind. We have been here several times and always get the Tri-tip sandwich! It is some of the best BBQ we have had and the only place we have found outside of the Midwest we look forward to!

Great BBQ… a place we visit each time we pass through town. Love the pulled pork the best.

The pulled pork and the mac and cheese were very good. We found the ribs and the tri-tip (or whatever the sliced meat was on the Big Pine platter) to be dry. The ribs are done in a traditional style (not fall off bone) and barbecue sauce was not enough to save the dry meat. I’d stop by if it happened to be on the way, but nothing to write home about if you’ve had Southern barbecue (Texas, Mississippi).

What can I say this is Copper Top Barbecue and it's one of the best in the Nation as voted on by Yelpers. They have a wide variety of meats and various sandwiches my favorite is the tri-tip! The mac and cheese is great! Stop by for lunch but don't wait too long because they will sell out on a busy day. I got a rack of ribs and a tri-tip to go took it home fed the family they were all delighted.

Nice bbq spot on our way from LA to mammoth. Great ambience and friendly staff. Dog friendly and plenty of parking. We got the tritip/green beans and pork ribs/Mac and cheese.

Always a tasty, satisfying on-the-way-back-to-LA finish from a week-long Mammoth shred fest. Al consistently procures down-home backyard BBQ hospitality without effort and serves up some of the best tri-tip morsels North of Los Angeles. Their creamy Mac&Cheese will put you to sleep and into snooze mode so make sure you gulp a couple shots of their spicy BBQ sauce to keep you alert to zoom past all those pesky CHP speed traps without worry. Do stop by this gem of a BBQ hub, definitely a feast! @wardstr.

Food was excellent. Stand outs were tri tip, Mac and cheese, potato salad. Didn’t try ribs or pulled pork. An absolute must stop en route to Mammoth or returning home. If you are a local, God has blessed you with the nations best bbq (after GQ BBQ in Denver!)

Traveld the US and had lots of BBQ over the years. The sauce is decent (could be better), but the meat was well seasoned and cooked perfectly, so it didn't matter much to me. Nice soft rolls, delicious Mac, and great portions for the price in this area. I'll be back with some PCT hikers next time! Gotta show some international hikers what BBQ should be like in the USA. The last place we went further south, Texas something maybe, in another town was sad at best. Thanks for a great meal!
