Melbourne Travel Guide - Things To Do & Vacation Ideas

"With just 15 rooms, this understated, modern boutique hotel is removed from the hubbub of the city's CBD, while remaining close to attractions and transport. Albert Park Lake is nearby, along with the South Melbourne Market—perfect for a morning coffee and pastry pit-stop. Happy hour couldn't be easier to find, with a pub of the same name downstairs." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Coppersmith Hotel - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"First impressions? This 15-room property is a pleasing counterpoint to the grand-dame hotels that dominate central Melbourne: it's compact, characterful (the historic building was once a pub), and resolutely low key. Coppersmith has an enduring cult following. What’s the crowd like? Visitors who know Melbourne well; older couples. How was check in? Visitors check in at the downstairs bar, which is staffed by exceptionally cheery locals. Keycards provide late-night access to the property. Tell us about the rooms. This 18th-century building underwent a gut renovation before it became a hotel—as a result, the guest rooms are sleek and modern while retaining some historic flavor. Wood panelling, light-wood floors, and dark wood chairs add charm. King rooms are much larger and represent great value. How about the little things, like mini bar. Despite the hotel's casual and pared-back ethos, there's good free Wi-Fi, cable TV, a Nespresso machine, and a mini bar in each guest room. Room service and food: Worth it? The hotel's bistro and adjoining bar are places you'll want to linger. Well thought-out French-accented food and classy craft beers are the highlights, and there's also a surprisingly deep wine cellar. The bistro serves breakfast, too. Limited room service finishes at 9 p.m. Anything stand out about other services and features? Coppersmith won't suit travelers who want fitness facilities, a business center, or concierge service at their fingertips—this is a place for the self sufficient. Bottom line. The non-touristy South Melbourne location—about 10 minutes from the city center—makes Coppersmith feel like a well-maintained locals-only secret." - Dan F. Stapleton

Coppersmith Hotel, South Melbourne, Australia - Explore & Book

"At the quiet end of Clarendon Street, just a hop over the Yarra River by tram, lies a tiny but perfectly crafted boutique hotel in a cool, inner-city neighbourhood. A former old boozer, it has retained its local appeal and 1870s façade, but inside the luxury factor has been ramped up with perfect attention to detail. After a day exploring Melbourne’s many sights, it’s a joy to return to Coppersmith’s quiet, understated rooms, and the elegant bar and bistro that shimmers with glass, marble and metal. Friendly, attentive staff make you feel right at home, talking you through the wonderfully extensive drinks list at dinner or giving you travel tips over breakfast. The kitchen, open all day, serves upscale European dishes and bar snacks curated from seasonal produce; it's a popular destination for local foodies. Sundowners on the roof deck are a must, with its 360-degree view of Melbourne’s sparkling skyline. And in Grand Prix season, the hotel is in pole position for all the action, with Albert Park just a 5-minute walk away. Highs Perfect for solo travellers, groups of friends or couplesThe friendly staff and buzzing bar make you feel instantly welcome The bistro and breakfast menu is deliciously inventiveQuiet luxury in the 15 rooms: recordable TV, Nespressos, bathrobesThe hip surrounding neighbourhood: the famous South Melbourne market, plenty of local cafés, bars and shops, and easy access to Melbourne’s delights Lows Queen Bedrooms are compact, there are no twin rooms, and the only King Bedroom gets booked up far aheadCheck in is through the bar - which can be busy in the eveningsStreet parking can be hard to findYou can't walk to the city centre from here but it's an easy tram ride" - Melinda McDougall

We stayed at the Coppersmith Hotel for four nights in a beautiful spacious room (201) with an attractive view over Clarendon street (which was surprisingly quiet at night.) Staff were exceptional: friendly, polite and obliging. Nothing was too much for them. Thank you especially, Paul and Hannah. We ate at the hotel's Bistro and the food was delicious. The hotel is in a great location, being only a couple of blocks away from Albert Park with its restaurants and shops. And also it's only a short drive to some beautiful parks and the South Melbourne Markets where we enjoyed some superb oysters and prawns.|The Coppersmith doesn't serve breakfasts but that doesn't matter as it's a short walk across the road to the cosy South Melbourne Bakery which serves great pastries, good coffee and plays good music. |The hotel conveniently has a number 12 tram, stop 130, right in front - so it's only a short ride to the inner city .|We'll certainly stay at the Coppersmith Hotel on our next visit to Melbourne.

Lovely boutique Hotel. Great bar downstairs and even with the bar it’s the rooms are nice and quiet. Bar has amazing food and one of then best Guinness we had outside Ireland. Staff at the place were lovely. Walking distance from city but just outside the main hustle and bustle of the centre in the beautiful suburb of South Melbourne. Loads of good restaurants and cafe nearby.

Previously emailed Feedback - before posting publicly. No response from management Hey guys I have just reviewed your automated email asking for a TripAdvisor review. I don't feel comfortable leaving you a review on there as it wouldn't be a positive one, however I don't believe in leaving negative reviews if I haven't spoken to management/owners about the issues prior. We arrived at 730pm on Monday night - quickly checked in (the room was freezing - 13.5 degrees whilst being set to 28 degrees) & then came back down to the restaurant for dinner at 745pm. Our dinner was actually incredibly underwhelming I had a 250g steak medium rare 4+ for $39 and it was so tough that I actually only ate 1/4 of it... My Mum ordered a wagyu burger & that was also tough Essentially after a 15hr travel day we ended up eating chips & salad for dinner. Having a drink each that cost $91 We got offered complimentary drinks vouchers as compensation (which we couldn't use anyway - checking out at 645am the next morning for another 15hr travel day). I had also ordered a $230 bottle of Billie Cart Salmon Sparkling with with Paul as per one of my previous emails - as it was my Mums birthday & we were in Melbourne to go wedding dress shopping Tue morning. That never appeared in the room either I went to get a coffee at 630 Tue morning before leaving at 645am (after noticing a coffee machine in the bar on Monday night) & the restaurant was closed. The winning part of our stay was that it was only a 10min walk to my bridal appointment. Otherwise I probably wouldn't recommend again to be honest. Once again; just re-iterating that I don't want to post this publicly, as I also own a business (coffee shop) & appreciate people giving me feedback privately first if it's negative Kind Regards - Holly

This is a great boutique hotel in South Melbourne, I booked it for visiting family. Staff were lovely and very helpful, entire building is nicely renovated and has everything you need for a trip. Only wish we tried the food downstairs earlier, because it's quite good and more affordable than many other places. Thanks for having us!

The boutique rooms were somewhat spartan with obstructed windows but comfortable. The only criticism was that the AC compressor was intermittently loud at night. There is no parking on site. The staff were efficient and obliging and the food was good bistro fare.

We loved our stay. The room was modern, clean, quiet and had plenty of room. The hotel is so close to cafes, restaurants and the Sth Melbourne Markets. We like walking and Albert Park was so close to access and to wander to St Kilda.

Yelp
I guess when it comes to pubs in South Melbourne, then I shouldn't be all that surprised when they happen to be a little fancier than normal because, well, it does happen to be South Melbourne. However, while the downstairs area does pretty much come across as a restaurant, if you grab the elevator, then you will discover a rather nice rooftop deck. In fact, despite it being a little small, it is still quite pleasant. Oh, and they do have a nice assortment of tap beers as well.
