The Best East Bay Wine Bars | Eater SF

"An offshoot of Cordial Bottle Shop, Cordial Cellar and Lounge offers a curated selection of wines by the glass alongside small bites in a sleek basement-level space in the Castro Valley Marketplace. The by-the-glass menu pulls heavily from California wine country, with select appearances from international wineries. Education is a big component of the experience at Cordial, with various wine flights always on the menu and guided Wednesday night tasting experiences, wine suppers, pop-ups, and more." - Dianne de Guzman

Cozy bar with a well curated wine collection, local beers, and unique whiskeys. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable! Simon always has details on the wine makers, grape selection, and growing history of all the wines available. The food is still bar-familiar, but more like restaurant quality. Definitely recommend the meat and cheese plate to go with wine tasting. The wine club regularly introduces us to excellent smaller wineries, often specializing in sustainable agriculture.

Loved this gem on Castro Valley where I grew up. Used to be the old Daughtreys building now offing great food, ambience and a market. Try the steak panini it is wonderful!

We usually only come here for special events where they do a set menu and wine pairing. Last one we went to was Hawaiian themed with a live band playing Xmas music island style. We always have a good time. It's usually fairly intimate and each dinner has about 20-25 guests. Just follow Castro Valley Marketplace on social media to get notified about these events.

Updated for the reopening! Jan 2025: Great cheese selection and the five-spice short rib ragu was a sophisticated blend of meat + spice flavors. Can't wait to try the pot pie! And maybe join the wine club.... ---- Love how elegant they've made this basement space - it's always a nice respite from the outside world. Enjoy their flights and great beer selection, and the popcorn is always tasty. Peer into the heart of deliciousness with the sous vide cheesecake, made of goat cheese with graham cracker crumbs and Irish whiskey dulce de leche. Quite tasty! But I admit, I was sad to see it served in jar form versus a slice. I probably should have guessed that from the "sous vide," huh?

This is a Hidden Gem in the heart of Castro Valley. Here, there are very exact and professional servers and bartenders. They also have happy hour. I love that they let kids come and sit. The water was very fresh too. I will definitely be back!

Google
Hidden gem for craft beer lovers in Castro Valley. They have DAILY happy hour from 3-4pm 50% off all draft beers which includes Pliny! That’s right - $4 Pliny you can’t beat it. They have a good selection of craft beer cans to go including moonraker, hen house, revision. I got the Mac and cheese which was tasty but a little over cooked. Overall would be back!

One of the literally hiden and unadvertised gem in Castro Valley. The wines selection is incredible and rotating. Great value. Just stop by and take a look or better sip. You'll enjoy.

Yelp
I have found my new go-to favorite bottle, right here at Cordial Bottle Shop! When they first opened at the Castro Valley Marketplace, they were located in the cellar which was downstairs on the lower level. They have since moved on the main level to a smaller section, but they still have a wonderful array of curated beverages customers can browse through. My new found fave is their 'Love You Bunches' from Santa Barbara, it is one of their only orange wines they have on the floor. Danielle was very helpful and personable, great to talk to. If you find something on the floor that you want to drink same day and it's best chilled, don't hesitate to ask if they have one that is in their fridge. They have a few high tables on the perimeter of their wine displays, they're used for their wine tasting events that occur Wednesdays 5pm-7pm $15 and Saturdays complimentary tastings from 5pm-7pm. A wine club is also available to be a part of - $54 / mo. for 2 curated bottles they'll select and provide notes for you. Wine isn't your thing? They also have other spirits, beers, and liquor available.

Yelp
Cordial Bottle Shop is on the ground floor of Castro Valley Marketplace, located between the grocery store & the sushi place. Offerings: craft beers, wines, alcohol ice cream, seltzer cocktails... Drinks: "Latvia Laudromat"(5.75, 8.8% alc) Henhouse -"Hazy double IPA, boozy, made with mosaic & citra hops. Semi-fruity. Not disappointed Altamont "Maui Waui" (4.50, 6.5%j mosaic & citra hops -single malt IPA, nice blend of boozy, slight fruitiness. "Contains No Juice" DIPA (6.50, 8.5%) Alvarado St. Brewery. Boozy with mucho fruitiness, too sweet. Pass. "Eyes are Mosaic" Casa Apria (5, 7.2% alc) too sweet, semi-hazy, pass. Take outs: beers, seltzers are trendy items, didn't see any classic porters nor imperial ipa's -small display area. -knowledgeable cashier who also does the beer buying. -will stick to older names I know like Hen House, Altamont. Skipping newer labels, hazy versions of IPA.

Yelp
I'm a fan! I'm a member of their monthly wine club and it's fantastic! Bottles are in the $25ish range, one white and one red. The picks are always great and something new and interesting to try. Special shout out to Danielle. I used to be in wine retail back in the day, and she reminds me of myself. She's very passionate about the wines they carry and you can bank on her suggestions. She's also just a real sweetheart. I always enjoy popping in to see what's new.

Yelp
It was bittersweet when their store in San Leandro closed, but we were thrilled to discover they've opened a new one in Castro Valley. The new spot is somewhat limited in variety because of the smaller space, but what they lack in range, they make up for with their exceptional service. They're always welcoming and eager to assist, and they're very accommodating about ordering items that aren't currently in stock.
