Traditions Reinvented

"Set on the first floor of the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Balzan, this elegant, one Michelin-starred restaurant centers a preserved orange tree as a nod to the prestigious naval orange behind its name, while Head Chef Tyrone Mizzi offers three menus: 'Past', 'Present' and 'Future'. Dinner begins with ftira served with house pickles and a pumpkin seed dressing, then the 7-course 'Past' tasting menu—built on historical research—uses ingredients and recipes from key Maltese eras to create contemporary versions of time-honoured dishes, paying homage to the island’s culinary evolution. Courses include a Stone Age-inspired composition featuring local red prawns, caper berries, fennel, sea herbs and lemon thyme; a Phoenician spelt salad with a Melqart dressing; a Roman-era, locally produced olive oil mousse lightly infused with honey; and an Arab-influenced fish of the day accompanied by sumac tart, hummus and red lentils. Rabbit appears in 'The Knights Hospitallers' where the saddle is slow-cooked and served with Tuscan black truffles, chicken juices and crème fraiche, with guinea fowl occasionally used instead. Braġjoli is elevated with beef cheek, smoked celeriac purée and egg yolk confit—a showcase of the kitchen’s modern technique that features on the 'Future' menu. To finish, imqaret keeps the traditional aniseed note but adds almond and aniseed olive oil cake, almond ice cream, a florentine, date and orange purée and a mousse to contrast the pastry’s crispness." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

"Why we love it: A luxury resort with top-notch amenities in the heart of Malta The Highlights: - A variety of room types to accommodate all travelers - Five on-site bars and restaurants, including the historic Villa Corinthia - A regal pool surrounded by loungers and gardens The Review: In 1959, the Pisani family patriarch bought the historic Villa Refalo, intending for it to be a home for him, his wife, and their six children, as well as a restaurant. When he died unexpectedly, his children took over the property, first turning it into a wedding hall, and then a luxury hotel called Corinthia Palace. Even though the Pisanis have since expanded the Corinthia brand to 14 hotels around the world, they still own and operate the Malta original, running it with all the amenities required of a five-star stay. Here, guests find five bars and restaurants, a swanky outdoor pool and garden area, tennis courts, a deluxe spa and fitness center, and friendly, attentive service. The afternoon tea, served in your choice of British or Maltese style in the Orange Grove Brasserie, is a must, while the daily breakfast spread is generous and tasty. Ranging from superior rooms to executive suites, accommodations feature comfy beds and private balconies or terraces. All come with complimentary access to the Athenaeum Spa, but higher category options also include entry to the Executive Lounge, where guests can enjoy a daily breakfast buffet and complimentary wine, spirits, and canapés each evening. Speaking of the spa, it's currently being renovated and will be unveiled in April 2020 with a new design byGoddard Littlefair, a new parternship with ESPA for treatments, and new facilities includingseven treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, and a thermal area."

Corinthia Palace Malta (Attard, San Anton) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Across from San Anton Palace in Attard’s leafy residential quarter, Corinthia Palace began as a 19th-century villa, once home to Edward de Bono, later host to Queen Elizabeth. Today, it remains Malta’s original grande dame, refreshed with care but still unmistakably classic. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a mix of styles and balconies that overlook the gardens or quiet surrounding streets. The spa is expansive, the pools generous, and the shuttle to Valletta makes exploring easy. This isn’t the version of Malta you see on a postcard, and that’s exactly why it works." - Tablet Hotels

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They were always happy to assist you. The hotel itself was grand and beautiful, and the rooms were too. Breakfast was very diverse and delicious. The swimming pools were large and were child friendly from 9-12am. There was also a spa and salon. The outdoor was not open during the winter though. Overall I was very happy with my stay.

For context, I will mention that our preference is usually for a quiet, luxury, boutique hotel away from the tourist traps, so we did not mind that we needed to take a taxi everywhere – we just rang the concierge to arrange and added the cost to our room bill (the small extra fee was well worth it). The staff were wonderful – greeting everyone with a cheery smile and a friendly 'hello'. They work incredibly hard and are committed to doing whatever they can to help you enjoy your stay. The complimentary fresh flowers, bottle of bubbly, and fruit platter were a lovely welcome. The hotel is clearly very popular with a broad mix of guests, but especially businessmen, locals, and the odd tour group.||We stayed in one of the spacious (but unrenovated) Deluxe Suites and really appreciated the large balcony (where we preferred to spend our ‘chill days’); spacious rooms; artwork; large super-comfy bed; excellent air-con; reliable free wi-fi; and the quality electrics (Dyson hairdryer, Samsung 49-inch flat screen HD TVs, De’Longhi coffee machine), as well as the kettle and tea tray. The rooms were kept immaculately clean, and stocks of complimentary water, towels etc were regularly replenished, thanks to the wonderful housekeeping staff. Breakfast in the Villa Corinthia was what you would expect from a 5-star hotel (large buffet selection, plus some made to order options), although the service did suffer at peak times. The plush Caprice Lounge (opens at 4pm) offered a relaxing oasis for a refreshing post-sightseeing pick-me-up and pre/post dinner cocktails, as well as tapas-style dining. The outdoor pools are beautifully maintained and fine for a quick cool down, although a bit small and shallow for a proper swim.||Now for the not so good:|• For us, the hotel was overdeveloped - multiple extensions obliterate views to the rear (especially on the lower floors) and some of the gardens have been lost, making the rear of the site feel cramped.|• There was far more noise than we expected - from low flying planes (the hotel is quite close to the airport and is virtually under the main flightpath) and from certain guest groups. Our suite was clearly in need of renovation (carpets splitting at some of the seams and black mould around the shower). |• For us, the food at dinner mostly missed the mark (see my separate reviews of the three main restaurants) - there are lots of better fine dining options within a short taxi ride (the nearby Terroir was sublime).|• The outdoor pool area felt cramped, with little or no room to turn sunbeds or move parasols (note that non-residents can use the spa and rent sunbeds).

Everything at The Corinthia is lovely, from the location (no city is too far away) to the food (do try “Bahia” on the first floor if you get the chance)… but what really made my family’s stay memorable was the friendliness and disposition of the staff. From helping organize tours and reserve the vehicle to visit La Valletta (Kevin and Ramesh were fantastic); To serving coffee in the lobby every morning and having a pleasant conversation. I wish I could list everyone, but that’d make this review far too long. I couldn’t recommend Corinthia enough when visiting Malta.

I’ve stayed at the Corinthia Palace Hotel a few times over many years and when my partner and I urgently needed a good rest my choice was very easy. ||From start to finish this was one of the most pleasant and restful stays we’ve had in any hotel. ||Check in was simple and fast. |Our room was lovely….a grand deluxe room with a balcony overlooking the front garden of the hotel. ||The room was superbly clean and quiet with honestly fantastic room service staff. ||Breakfast in the Villa Corinthia was extensive to say the least and Angela the head was wonderful. ||We dined in Bahia and Villa Corinthia as well as the poolside restaurant….all excellent in their different styles. ||This is a superb old style luxury hotel still family run and with the emphasis on service and relaxation. ||I can’t recommend it enough.

The common areas and spa at Corinthia Palace Malta are genuinely nice and well maintained, and the restaurant is good. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives mostly end. The rooms are very, very, very old. They feel dated, tired, and completely out of step with what you would expect from a hotel at this price point. For what you pay, the room quality is frankly disappointing — worn furnishings, outdated décor, and an overall sense that the rooms haven’t been properly refreshed in a long time. It’s hard to justify the cost when the most important part of the stay feels stuck decades in the past. Service is good and the staff are professional and polite, which does help the experience, but it’s not enough to make up for the condition of the rooms. If you’re mainly using the spa or public areas you might be satisfied, but if you care about having a comfortable, modern room, this hotel does not offer value for money. Overall, nice facilities and good service, but severely overpriced given the state of the rooms.

With its impressive appearance, the hotel bears a resemblance to a palace. Features nice, large rooms and public areas, a spacious gym located in a separate building, and a spa. Breakfast was great, as was the service everywhere. I was surprised that the rooms were missing irons, scales, and basic toiletries. The most disappointing was the SPA center. You need to book in advance to use the sauna or steam bath, as they accommodate only six people at a time. This is okay, but then they give you 45 minutes to use it, after which you need to leave. Booking it wasn't easy. It took several calls and emails, and I heard many times that they were fully booked. However, I managed to book and go, and there were only three people despite the presence of many organizations. Also, the location is such that you need a taxi or a car to get anywhere.

Excellent hotel - all the staff were very friendly and helpful; the rooms were well sized and equipped; the spa / pool were very good (good size for indoor pool); the hotel was in a nice area, and had easy access (around 15 minutes uber / taxi…) to Mdina / Valletta; good food / drinks options at the: bar, restaurant and at breakfast. My feedback is: -Would be nice to have a children’s menu for afternoon tea - we go away every year for Christmas, and every hotel (Ritz, London, JW Marriott, IHG Intercontinental (Barclays, NY), etc) - except this one - has had a children’s afternoon tea option. I think this would elevate your hotel offer (even keeping the price exactly the same, as your price was very reasonable for the adult choice). Also, we stayed at three hotels during our time in Malta, this December, and all the other hotels we have previously stayed at in December, had their outdoor pools open and the heating on. We walked around your pool on Christmas Day, and there were a few families sat there, but the pool was closed. I think opening your pool and pool area for this festive period would, again, elevate your hotel offer. However, the hotel was excellent and I would stay here again, and I would highly recommend this hotel to others.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. The staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. The bed was very comfortable and enjoyed a restful night. The food was great quality, well prepared and presented and absolutely delicious! The facilities were popular but did not feel crowded. All in all, my favourite hotel stay of the year. I'd love to find an excuse to come back!
