Traditions Reinvented

"Set on the first floor of the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Balzan, this elegant, one Michelin-starred restaurant centers a preserved orange tree as a nod to the prestigious naval orange behind its name, while Head Chef Tyrone Mizzi offers three menus: 'Past', 'Present' and 'Future'. Dinner begins with ftira served with house pickles and a pumpkin seed dressing, then the 7-course 'Past' tasting menu—built on historical research—uses ingredients and recipes from key Maltese eras to create contemporary versions of time-honoured dishes, paying homage to the island’s culinary evolution. Courses include a Stone Age-inspired composition featuring local red prawns, caper berries, fennel, sea herbs and lemon thyme; a Phoenician spelt salad with a Melqart dressing; a Roman-era, locally produced olive oil mousse lightly infused with honey; and an Arab-influenced fish of the day accompanied by sumac tart, hummus and red lentils. Rabbit appears in 'The Knights Hospitallers' where the saddle is slow-cooked and served with Tuscan black truffles, chicken juices and crème fraiche, with guinea fowl occasionally used instead. Braġjoli is elevated with beef cheek, smoked celeriac purée and egg yolk confit—a showcase of the kitchen’s modern technique that features on the 'Future' menu. To finish, imqaret keeps the traditional aniseed note but adds almond and aniseed olive oil cake, almond ice cream, a florentine, date and orange purée and a mousse to contrast the pastry’s crispness." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

"Why we love it: A luxury resort with top-notch amenities in the heart of Malta The Highlights: - A variety of room types to accommodate all travelers - Five on-site bars and restaurants, including the historic Villa Corinthia - A regal pool surrounded by loungers and gardens The Review: In 1959, the Pisani family patriarch bought the historic Villa Refalo, intending for it to be a home for him, his wife, and their six children, as well as a restaurant. When he died unexpectedly, his children took over the property, first turning it into a wedding hall, and then a luxury hotel called Corinthia Palace. Even though the Pisanis have since expanded the Corinthia brand to 14 hotels around the world, they still own and operate the Malta original, running it with all the amenities required of a five-star stay. Here, guests find five bars and restaurants, a swanky outdoor pool and garden area, tennis courts, a deluxe spa and fitness center, and friendly, attentive service. The afternoon tea, served in your choice of British or Maltese style in the Orange Grove Brasserie, is a must, while the daily breakfast spread is generous and tasty. Ranging from superior rooms to executive suites, accommodations feature comfy beds and private balconies or terraces. All come with complimentary access to the Athenaeum Spa, but higher category options also include entry to the Executive Lounge, where guests can enjoy a daily breakfast buffet and complimentary wine, spirits, and canapés each evening. Speaking of the spa, it's currently being renovated and will be unveiled in April 2020 with a new design byGoddard Littlefair, a new parternship with ESPA for treatments, and new facilities includingseven treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, and a thermal area."

Corinthia Palace Malta (Attard, San Anton) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Across from San Anton Palace in Attard’s leafy residential quarter, Corinthia Palace began as a 19th-century villa, once home to Edward de Bono, later host to Queen Elizabeth. Today, it remains Malta’s original grande dame, refreshed with care but still unmistakably classic. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a mix of styles and balconies that overlook the gardens or quiet surrounding streets. The spa is expansive, the pools generous, and the shuttle to Valletta makes exploring easy. This isn’t the version of Malta you see on a postcard, and that’s exactly why it works." - Tablet Hotels

I’ve stayed at the Corinthia Palace Hotel a few times over many years and when my partner and I urgently needed a good rest my choice was very easy. ||From start to finish this was one of the most pleasant and restful stays we’ve had in any hotel. ||Check in was simple and fast. |Our room was lovely….a grand deluxe room with a balcony overlooking the front garden of the hotel. ||The room was superbly clean and quiet with honestly fantastic room service staff. ||Breakfast in the Villa Corinthia was extensive to say the least and Angela the head was wonderful. ||We dined in Bahia and Villa Corinthia as well as the poolside restaurant….all excellent in their different styles. ||This is a superb old style luxury hotel still family run and with the emphasis on service and relaxation. ||I can’t recommend it enough.

With its impressive appearance, the hotel bears a resemblance to a palace. Features nice, large rooms and public areas, a spacious gym located in a separate building, and a spa. Breakfast was great, as was the service everywhere. I was surprised that the rooms were missing irons, scales, and basic toiletries. The most disappointing was the SPA center. You need to book in advance to use the sauna or steam bath, as they accommodate only six people at a time. This is okay, but then they give you 45 minutes to use it, after which you need to leave. Booking it wasn't easy. It took several calls and emails, and I heard many times that they were fully booked. However, I managed to book and go, and there were only three people despite the presence of many organizations. Also, the location is such that you need a taxi or a car to get anywhere.

Booking into the Corinthia Palace was, without doubt, the best decision we made during our visit to Malta. It’s a true oasis—calm, tasteful, and defined by genuinely warm service. After a particularly hectic period, we came to Malta for a short break, but found the island itself didn’t resonate with us. Without the Corinthia Palace, the trip might well have been a write-off.||The concierge and front desk team were exemplary: gracious, attentive, and effortlessly professional. The bar, quiet and refined, felt like the heartbeat of the hotel—staffed by individuals of the highest calibre. Room 233 became our sanctuary; I slept deeply and peacefully there. While the decor shows its age, the spaciousness and serenity of the room more than compensate.||There were a few missteps. The in-house Italian restaurant was a letdown—the Milanese veal arrived with charred edges, suggesting it wasn’t freshly prepared. It should never have left the kitchen in that state. Breakfast, served in the same venue, was underwhelming; both variety and quality could use a lift.||Still, the Corinthia Palace was the redeeming feature of our Maltese escape. It turned what could have been a disappointing trip into a genuinely restorative experience.

I came to Malta as a solo traveller for 5 days and stayed in a Grand Deluxe Room. The room was spacious with plenty of seating and a beautiful balcony. A mini fridge and tea/coffee making facilities were available. The en-suite shower room was well equipped with all necessary personal care amenities as well as bath robes, slippers, and a Dyson hairdryer. The hotel itself is palatial with elegant decor. There are a number of great restaurants as well as a cafe bar in reception providing coffee/tea, healthy smoothies and snacks. I dined at the onsite Michelin Star restaurant, Bahia - the food was beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. The onsite gym facilities were great - the weights area was well equipped and of a high standard. There was a separate cardio room - plenty of choice and on the whole acceptable for use during a holiday. The bikes were average however and I ended up seeking a spin studio outside of the hotel. The pool/spa facilities looked beautiful. Due to sightseeing every day, I didn’t use these. Staff were welcoming and friendly. All housekeeping staff were exceptional - they went above and beyond to make sure I had a comfortable stay and nothing seemed too much trouble. The hotel location is perfect. I hired a car during my stay, however transport options and Bolt taxis were available if needed.

A lovely building with excellent facilities. All of the staff were very attentive and polite. The food was very good and a varied selection was available. Spacious room with its own balcony. Although out of town, a free shuttle bus was provided to and from Valletta which was very much appreciated.

I’m not going to spend much time talking about how beautiful this place is, or how nice the gym is, or how incredible the indoor pool feels, or how remarkably elegant the outdoor pool looks—or how you can sense the historical ambience in every hallway, like you’re walking through an actual palace. All of that is true, of course. I should also mention it’s the best breakfast I’ve ever had, served in one of the most stunning restaurants imaginable—both timeless and perfectly fancy. But what really made this trip extraordinary wasn’t the architecture or the food. It was the people. This hotel has the best staff I’ve ever encountered anywhere. From the restaurant team—especially the ladies at breakfast, who made me feel like a prince (though at my age, maybe “king” is more accurate)—to the reception crew, everyone went so far above and beyond. I want to especially mention three people at the front desk: a trainee (I only know him by his name tag), just found out it is Abdul , along with Pedro and Adriana. They were all so kind, attentive, and endlessly patient. Even with how busy the hotel was, they never showed a hint of stress. Somehow, despite its size, the place feels calm and spacious—almost private—and that’s in no small part thanks to their warmth and professionalism. And then there’s Deepak, Chloe, and Harish, who took care of me at the restaurant by the pool and around the pool itself. Their customer service was exceptional—genuine, thoughtful, and full of grace. They made me feel not just welcome, but lucky to be here. Yasin as a waiter is the best. And I wish I could have people with his customer service in America So yes—stay here. I would gladly pay double what we did and still consider it an incredible deal.

We were so delighted with Corinthia Palace. The staff have been superb - all of them! Always greet you with a good morning, or hello, and a big smile. Very helpful. Exceptional service. And when something goes awry, they fix the problem promptly. Highly recommended. Great restaurants too!

The Corinthia Palace is located in the quiet residential area of Attard, just opposite the beautiful San Anton Gardens and the Presidential Palace. It’s a charming, elegant property with old-world Maltese character and modern comforts. Arrival & Check-In We arrived at around 1 p.m., but unfortunately, there was a mix-up with Expedia/Hotels.com — the hotel hadn’t been informed of my Platinum status. As a result, early check-in wasn’t offered initially, and we were asked to return at 2 p.m. At the front desk, Antonella was very helpful and even made a few calls to our previous hotel to help retrieve a lost item. Alessandro, the Front Desk Manager, handled the situation professionally and turned the experience around, even though the issue wasn’t the hotel’s fault. When we returned at 2 p.m., the room was still not ready, and we waited until around 2:30 p.m. before being shown to our suite. Rooms Our first suite (Room 123) was spacious, nicely decorated with elegant panelling, a marble bathroom, and a large bed. However, the view was of the building’s roof structure, which was disappointing. We requested a change and were moved to Room 320, also a suite, with a much better view of the surrounding area. The second suite was slightly smaller — essentially two standard rooms combined — but still comfortable and tastefully designed. Alessandro kindly sent a bottle of champagne to our room as a gesture of goodwill, which we greatly appreciated. Breakfast Breakfast is served in the lovely Villa Corinthia restaurant, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Angela was particularly welcoming, and the staff — especially the Filipino team members — were warm and attentive. The buffet includes both hot and cold selections, as well as a dessert section and a central drinks station. Fresh juices include orange, kale and pineapple, and beetroot with ginger. The coffee was excellent. The only minor letdown was the cooked breakfast — the omelet resembled a thick crêpe and the mushrooms were just average. Facilities Gym: Located past the pool and accessed via a metal spiral staircase, the gym is also open to non-guests, so it can get busy with personal trainers and their clients. It’s well equipped with cardio machines, weights, and resistance equipment, all overlooking the pool and gardens. Water and towels are provided, though the wall-mounted sanitiser dispensers weren’t working. Tennis Court: Situated behind the pool and visible from the gym. Pool Area: There are two outdoor pools surrounded by sun loungers. The cushions are in need of replacement, as single towels don’t fully cover them and many have visible wear. The pool attendant was slow to assist with setup and reluctant to prepare loungers on the terrace. The area enjoys good sunlight until around 3 p.m. (in November), after which nearby trees block the sun. The pools are unheated, with fountains providing pleasant background noise. Spa: The Athenaeum Spa has two sections — one with bookable facilities (sauna, hydro beds, and hot/cold stone loungers, available for 45 minutes), and an indoor pool and small jacuzzi that are free to use. There’s also a small outdoor plunge pool and loungers, perfect for summer. More dry relaxation areas would be welcome, as these fill up quickly. Dining Dining at Bahia and Villa Corinthia was excellent, with great service and food quality. However, lunch at The Secret Garden was underwhelming. On the other hand, Josephine’s Coffee Bar in the lobby serves very good coffee and pastries. Parking & Departure Parking is free and convenient — either in front of the hotel’s roundabout or in the lot directly opposite. The team kindly offered us a late check-out and even provided a smaller room to shower and freshen up before departure. Check-out was a bit slow due to a busy front desk handling check-ins, but overall, it was handled courteously.
