Corky Carroll's Surf School

The boogie board camp was held near the Huntington Beach volleyball courts, and it was a fantastic experience for the kids. The coaches were caring and attentive, always nearby to ensure safety. That gave us peace of mind and let the kids fully enjoy the waves. The program was well-run and welcoming—a perfect intro to the ocean for young beach lovers!

My 10 year old son had an absolute blast all week at this camp. It was a perfect introduction to surfing for him. More than anything I was SO impressed with the instructors there. Especially a gentleman named Max who was beyond kind to my son who was a little intimidated at first. Highly recommend.

Our son attended the boogie board camp this year as a complete beginner to any type of ocean activity other than recreational play. He absolutely loved it! All of the camp instructors were very welcoming and interactive with the kids! I would obviously recommend that your child be a confident swimmer. I really appreciated the parent meeting on the first drop off day where we were able to hear a bit more of the expertise of the owners and see that they acknowledge the real responsibility that comes with bringing kids into the ocean. I felt safe leaving my son, and he had a great time each day! We will def be back next summer!

YESSSSS! I start off by saying that for me the best part of any company customer service. The customer service has been absolutely impeccable. my daughter was very lucky to have Dustin as her instructor. he was very patient and went above and beyond for her. He did not rush her out of the water when the lesson was over and made sure that she was able to ride a few waves. My daughter will be on the serve team and because of the two hour lesson from Dustin that she feels more confident than she did going into the water. He took very good care of her and taught her the basics in the mechanics of surfing! I was very stressed out with my daughter going in the water as she is new to the sport. after a few minutes of her being in the water with Dustin, I felt very calm and relaxed. we are definitely going to be doing more lessons with this. it has been a game changer meeting the and the instructors.

We took our two 11-year old twin nephews, who were visiting from Michigan, to Corky's for their first surfing experience. We booked a private lesson for each of them. They had the kind of experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. The instructors were patient and enthusiastic and gave the boys lots of positive reinforcement. Both boys managed to get up several times. It was a real confidence boost for both of them and an experience they will for sure be telling all of their friends in Michigan all about.

Excellent experience with Corky Carroll's Surf School - staff were friendly and helpful. Wes, my daughter's instructor, was amazing with her, a Midwestern kid with zero surfing experience. He had her up on a board within an hour, and now she can't wait to hit the waves again on our next visit to Socal!

Kelsie and Keith are top tier! This is our second year doing Corky Carroll's Surf school and we wouldn't go anywhere else! The environment is safe, inclusive and most important FUN! My son has done with friends and solo and both times he makes NEW friends! Don't hesitate and BOOK ASAP!

This was my first time surfing and my instructor was so patient and made the experience light hearted but gave me helpful pointers for how to improve. If you're on the fence about learning to surf (even if you've lived here your whole life like me and never got around to trying it out until age 26) do it! You're never too old and it's never too late :)

This was our third year attending Corky Carroll Surf Camp, and it just keeps getting better! My daughter did two back to back weeks this year and still wished she had one more. The instructors are top notch, fun, encouraging, and focused on safety while delivering truly meaningful instruction. Her progress this year was tremendous!

Easy and reliable reservation system. The pricing is fair. The staff were professional and friendly. Sebastian was especially knowledgeable. He was so good at coaching us to get right in position on a good wave and telling us right when to stand. In our party of four, we all stood and rode at least 2 good waves and we all had never surfed before. Many of us were able to do more than that. I personally am anxious about swimming in the ocean, but the instructors made me feel at ease.

I had an amazing experience for my 50th birthday. I learned so much. And have a great respect for Surfers . And the patience that the instructor and coaches have. Can't wait to try again ( when the waves are calmer lol)

Sure school was absolutely the best - my daughters 17&15 have never surfed a day in their lives and Patrick absolutely crushed it for them. The fact that after just a few minutes they were able to get up - it's been 24 hours since and they are talking more about their 2 hour sesh than 16 hrs at Disneyland.... They keep looking at the pictures and videos we took from shore. Don't plan anything for a few hours after - burritos and a nap hit the spot and back to some SoCal fun. If I could give this 10 stars I would - from the time we arrived till the very end !! It was a beautiful day !! Great equipment and great staff

Great group of people/instructors/owners. My 10 year old attended camp last week. He had never sufres before and was riding sabes on the first day. The instructors were awesome! We will be coming back for sure!

Customer Service - 5 stars Instructors - 4.5 stars Equipment - 5 stars Location* - 5 stars (for beginners) Price / value - 5 stars Background We were looking for a place to practice to surf in the HB (Huntington Beach) / NB (Newport Beach) area and talked to a couple of different people at surf shops, looked online, etc. (We tried surfing in Santa Barbara the week prior with an instructor and had very positive results and also did some surfing on our own in HB near the pier without an instructor with mixed results. Since we are new to surfing, we wanted to find a local guide/instructor to improve our surfing skills whilst in HB so we have an idea of how to rate the instructors / school). We found CCSC (Corky Carroll's Surf School)* online based on other people's reviews and also based on locals input on where it's best to learn and decided to go with CCSC. Customer Service - 5 stars We were looking to surf the next day but noticed most places needed at least a 1-day notice. I called in the late afternoon and Keith, the owner, was able to accommodate my son and me on short notice ( less than. . 24hrs) for a surf lesson the very next day which was awesome. The directions to the location was straight-forward and we had no issues finding the place. Keith was a very cool dude to chat with and was totally positive and welcoming during our call and also when we met with Keith the next morning for our lesson, which to me is just as important as the lesson itself. Instructors / equipment - 4.5/5 stars They sized us up for our wetsuits and boards, which appeared to be in good condition (and not run down or broken) like some other places. They introduced us to two instructors Kyle and Cody. Kyle instructed me personally and was awesome on many different levels. From his positive and welcoming attitude to newbies like us, to step-by-step easy to follow instructions on land (e.g. paddling, pop-up), local tips (eg. do the stingray shuffle) and most importantly great coaching and assistance once in the water, I was able to learn not only w/o getting discouraged but also whilst having fun. Kyle is a great instructor and was able to do everything from giving us a push-off (if we weren't paddling fast enough) to telling us when to pop-up, and how to read the waves while being right next to us in the water. The icing on the cake was having someone like Kyle who could relate to people in their teens to people in their late 40s. As such Kyle was able to adjust his teaching style to give breaks where needed, a literal or figurative push, and just the ability to chat in a very mature way. As a result, I was able to catch waves on my own which I attribute to great coaching by Kyle. Location / Value - 5stars HB-BC was a great place to learn. The waves weren't punishing and gave enough of a break to paddle out or small enough for newbies to paddle through. (Keith mentioned that they usually only teach in the mornings for this reason, but it was also the location when we compared it to NB) The price for 2hrs was a great price and included the ability to use the board and wetsuit for another 2hrs afterwards, which we really appreciated. Keith also gave us some additional 1:1 instruction after our lesson and more importantly, a good time by chatting with us and encouraging us. Thanks to Keith and Kyle for a great experience. *Apparently there is another surf school in HB near the pier with a similar name. Hands down the best place to learn how to surf. A week in the sun watching our little grom catch waves brought nothing but joy to our hearts. The instructors were amazing, the safety lessons were on point and the location was perfect. 100% give our recommendation.

What an amazing surf camp and surf company owned and ran by the most incredible people and instructors! My son who was not a huge fan of the ocean or surfing left a week of camp with a LOVE for it all! He woke up daily excited to put on his wetsuit and get to Bola's Chica to see his camp leader and instructors. He finished camp surfing like a pro and begging to go back for more. This was our first summer surf camp but definitely not our last!

My 12 year old son has been wanting to learn to surf so we decided to book a 2 hour lesson at Corky Carroll's Surf School. The lesson went great!! Everyone was so nice & checking him in & getting him ready for the lesson went very smoothly & quickly. Parker was his instructor & he was wonderful! My son had a fun time learning to surf & did so well thanks to Parker. We even rented the surfboard & wetsuit from them for 2 days after the lesson since we are camping at Bolsa Chica Beach. I would highly recommend this surf school to everyone!! They were awesome!

Better late than never! It' probably been about fourteen years ago but the experience has been a topic of conversation ever since. . My wife, grandson and granddaughter purchased private lessons from your company which took place at Bolsa Chica First of all the lesson should've been cancelled/rescheduled due to the terrible conditions it was choppy as hell. Even if they were taught how to catch a wave there were none to try to catch Wife was 63, grandkids 12 and 13. My 5' 4" wife was given a ten foot gunboat so heavy she couldnt carry into the water. The instructor didn't provide any assistance helping them. He didn't provide adequate instruction on land, nothing in the water, basically sent them Out on their own in unsafe conditions. The class wasn't cheap and we should've requested a refund at the time Since then we talked about it over the years and observed other surf lessons in Hawaii which made us realize even more how terrible Your instructor was. It would be nice if you offered a refund but I'm not expecting it. Jack Reich

I highly recommend Corky Carrolls Surf School! Phillip was an awesome instructor. He was so patient and kind when we both realized that I was super afraid of the waves. He was very empowering and made me feel like I was safe when my body and mind felt out of control and anxious. I have a newfound respect for the ocean and for surfers, who to me, are very brave! Thanks again uncle Phillip! You rock!

We had four kids signed up for surfing and they all learn to surf in one day. They had never been in ocean before because they live in Minnesota and North Dakota. This was the best time they had ever and we got great videos of them surfing thank you so much for making this their best vacation ever.

My private lesson with Phil was a great experience. I have had 5 group lessons before this and had no problem standing up after being pushed into a wave. However, when I paddle out by myself, I get confused about how to select a wave and time it correctly. Phil really took the time to explain the science behind wave formation and wave selection. It was a gnarly day, but he gave me tricks on how to get past the break with bigger waves and rough conditions. We worked on pop up timing and technique as well. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Phil and I would recommend him to any beginner surfer who is looking to advance their skills and get more comfortable paddling out solo. I had a great time and felt like I got a lot out of my lesson that I can take with me the next time I surf.

We attend Corky Carroll's Surf School both for camp and private lessons, and cannot recommend them enough! My daughters (13 and 16) had a blast and one of them, Jules, has continued on and attended the camp. The private instructors are all good and very attentive. They are super nice, too! You get two hours of uninterrupted board time. I highly recommend private 1:1 lessons if you can swing it. As for the surf camp, I love that the kids are divided into proper age groups (no 13 year old wants to hang with the tiny tikes all morning). Jules made friends the very first day and hung with them all week. They switch out the instructors every day - usually you have one from 9-11 and a different one from 11-1, and they don't often repeat day to day. I like this because she got to know a lot of different instructors. They spend about 2.5 hours actually surfing, and then 30-45 minutes boogie boarding/swimming and the rest of the time eating or reapplying sunscreen or taking a break, so the activities are broken up, which is nice. Everybody here is so nice. Jules is definitely hooked! Highly worth the money. Wet suits and surfboards are provided as part of the cost.

Attending Corky Carroll's was a game changer for my kids! They have always enjoyed the ocean but after the first week, they gained the skills to pick up a board and feel confident in the water. I love that they'll be able to use and build upon these skills for the rest of their lives.

The best thing I did for my kids all summer! Surfing everyday with instructors there to supervise and help. I was able to leave or watch and all times I felt my kids were safe and having fun. Keith and Kelsey were so helpful and they are quick to respond if I had any questions. If I could I would have them go all summer. My oldest daughter age 13 at the end of the camp needed no assistance at all. This was actually her dream to be able to surf. I can't thank you enough. Now she's watching all the surf documentaries and we are on our way to the US open, which we normally avoid the crowds at the beach. I love the passion she has.

Highly recommend Corky Carroll's! Both of my nieces from back East had a most excellent private surfing lesson! The instructor was very helpful and patient. He did an outstanding job! The girls had a little trepidation about how cold the ocean would be, but the wetsuits were very comfortable and fit perfectly. They had a blast out there in the Huntington Beach June "gloom" and wished they could come back for more lessons. Thank you for a special experience for the girls!

I'm in my mid-30s and haven't gotten out on the water in over ten years so I was hella nervous to start anew. My instructor Chaz (or Chad- sorry bro you introduced yourself AND the nice kid at the sign in booth introduced you and now too late I realize I never asked for clarification on that last consonant) was hella nice, patient and super encouraging. He was really great at pinpointing my rookie mistakes and his explanations on how to correct those mistakes were short, simple and incredibly effective. My arms are essentially al dente linguini at the moment and his instructions and tips on efficient paddling- especially in the break zone- for teaching me the most effective techniques to conserve my energy and power back out for another wave.

We signed our granddaughter up for the week-long surf camp and she totally enjoyed it! She just couldn't wait to go to camp everyday! She was able to stand up on the very first day and she was so proud! I'm sure that next year her older sister and younger brother will also learn to surf at Corky Carroll's Surf School!

I scheduled a private surf lesson for my granddaughter for Sunday. We arrived early so we could pick a good area to watch the lesson and set up our picnic area. When I got to the parking lot I stopped at the Corky Carroll container to ask where about the lessons would be because we have a 10:00. The just awoken employee replied "The lessons would be right over there but you don't have a lesson. I only have one lesson on the schedule and it's at 9:00 for Federico and you don't look like him." That was funny. I showed him my confirmation and he explained he just opens the container and I should call the company. When I called, there was a little confusion. I could here the scrambling searching for the reservation. After my reservation was found I was advised a text was sent to cancel, which I wasn't. The reason for the cancellation was because of the rain. 3 minutes after we got off the phone I received a cancellation email. First, the rain happened the day before, so I should've been cancelled on Saturday. We aren't from OC, so it would've been nice to know we were cancelled before driving down. Second, I surf too, so I know some people don't like to surf right after the rain. But if the rain was the real reason for the cancellation, why wasn't Federico cancelled as well? Lastly, I didn't receive a text to cancel, I received an email from the company after we hung up. I do understand things happen, but why choose to lie about the lesson instead of honesty? It is far easier to accept an "I'm sorry I messed up" then a flat out lie. After the disappointment I called a couple of other places and I was fortunate enough to get a lesson.

Corky Carroll's Surf is the best! Every summer when I visit from AZ I book surf lessons for the kids and rent a board for me. They are located at Bolsa Chica State Beach which is a great place for beginners and us old dudes who like to ride a smaller wave that has a nice shoulder. Parking is $15 for the day and never crowded. Keith and Mark make you feel like locals and are always willing to help you out with any gear you need. Whether you are sending your kids to surf school, private lessons, or just renting a board and wetsuit for the morning. Corky Carroll's is the best. See you guys next summer!

Camp was amazing! My daughter loved it and learned a lot. They followed all safety protocols including surfing etiquette, the ocean, current, and the student to instructor ratio was 2:1. We'll come back next summer for sure.
