48-Year-Old ‘Frenchiest French Bistro in San Francisco’ Closes for Good | Eater SF

"I learned that Jeanne d’Arc, a 48-year-old restaurant the SF Chronicle called the “Frenchiest French bistro in San Francisco,” has permanently closed after being dark since the beginning of the pandemic; owners Micheline and Claude Lambert posted on Facebook that the restaurant “has been the achievement of our life.” Located in the basement of Union Square’s Cornell Hotel de France and open since 1972, it drew rave TripAdvisor reviews and critics’ attention—Jonathan Kauffman called it “a Gallic fantasy that grows more baroque with every year,” while Soleil Ho said the meal offered “a dose of authentic weirdness.” Tourists (and some locals) flocked to its $58 prix fixe featuring items like lamb loin with truffle sauce and Grand Marnier soufflé, and its over-the-top decor of stained glass, pillars, and statuary; the Lamberts said they will miss the guests “who became true friends of ours” and thanked patrons “for their faithfulness which gave us the good feeling of being useful in the San Francisco and the French communities.” Hoodline was first to report the closure." - Eve Batey

I was just in Paris and this quaint hotel totally reminded me of the city of light. It is well decorated in French and Joan of Arc themes, cozy, and the room I had was a mini suite. It was quiet, clean, comfortable, and the bed was soft enough for me since I am a picky sleeper. The elevator alone is worth staying here-- very authentic. There was a delicious continental breakfast included with my stay. I will be back. Merci!

Google
A nice hotel- well located if you don’t mind being on a hill (good look in San Francisco if you don’t like hills!) Super quirky decoration in a sort of ‘French’ style. Staff all lovely and helpful. It was clean, the room always clean and well maintained throughout the stay. The breakfast could have been better- I think they tried to offer too wide a range. The hotel felt really safe and secure. I would come back and have already recommended this hotel to family and friends.

Google
A good hotel. Decor is charming although it’s feeling its age in the hallways and restaurant area. The elevator/lift is so fun though. The room was well maintained and clean. Breakfast was included which is a plus, but the breakfast could have been better- the eggs didn’t look all that appetising. ||The staff were all lovely. ||I would totally stay here again.

Google
I cannot begin to understand how this hotel has a rating above 4 stars. It is an absolute disgrace. When we arrived early, they offered to hold our bags, which would have been fine if they had done it responsibly. Instead, they piled everyone’s luggage in the lobby like trash. No security. Anyone could have grabbed any bag and walked away. The moment we walked in, it felt like stepping into a neglected, grimy, forgotten building that someone is still somehow charging money for. When it was finally time to check in, we opened the door to the room and the smell hit us like a punch to the face. The stench was revolting. The room was filthy, cramped, and depressing. Dirt and grime coated the surfaces like no one had cleaned in years. The carpet was disgusting. The air felt stale and sour. There were stains on every single thing. The curtains were stained. The pillows were stained. Even the walls had stains. One wall actually had a dirty footprint on it, which says everything you need to know about the level of “cleanliness” here. The window in the room was cracked. The phone didn’t work, so there was no way to even contact the front desk. We didn’t even sit down. We turned right around, went back downstairs, and demanded a refund. The audacity of this place to ask for a $100 security deposit is laughable. This hotel is falling apart and offers nothing but filth and neglect. They should be paying guests to put up with this kind of squalor, not the other way around. Do not stay here. Do not risk it. The photos are misleading, the ratings are a joke, and this hotel is nothing short of vile. This was one of the most revolting places I have ever set foot in, and I wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. 🚫 Avoid at all costs.

Google
Characterful is how I would describe the Cornell Hotel de France. Decorated in a very traditional provincial French style, it's a unique experience which is very different from the usual big chain hotels. ||Firstly, I have to say that the hotel room was very clean, and the bed was comfortable. I had a "comfy" room - the cheapest - and it was perfectly acceptable, a good size, with a en-suite in great condition. The staff were great, the breakfast good, and it's very well located in downtown San Francisco, 5 minutes from Union Square. It's also right on the tram route to Fisherman's Wharf.||The décor is quite quirky, the plumbing perhaps not quite up to modern standards - but this is an old building and so you should be prepared to make a few adjustments. The lift is a marvel, and we loved the bear! This hotel is not trying to comply to the norms of a vanilla chain hotel, and if you like things just a little different, this will suit you!

Google
A stay in a somewhat outdated hotel gone sour after management charged for extra nights after check out. This was done without comment probably hoping I wouldn’t notice. Multiple attempts to communicate with the hotel were fruitless. Fortunately the card issuer investigated and judged in my favor. But warning remains, this is a fraud place. Stay away or only visit with great care.

Google
I booked this hotel for Oct 25-28 for a conference. The hotel was dirty, smelled horribly, and the entire building did not have air conditioning. I did not stay there. I stayed with another hotel which was charged to the same card. I was told that the manager would provide a refund however I would have to go through Expedia. When we called to speak with Expedia they said the manager denied the refund. I likely would have likely stayed there despite the horrible conditions had I known.

Google
Very charming. Historical building so if you are looking for updated and modern not for you. The hotel was beautiful. Really should replace windows so they open. Breakfast was definitely lacking otherwise would have given 5 stars.

Yelp
a stayed one night at the hotel de france, but it was for sure more of an experience. the inside view and the hand-made decor are the highlights of this hotel, and they offer breakfast buffet rooms can be small, but it's worth the experience!

Yelp
My first stay there was nice. Quaint hand painted rooms with sweet detailing. So on a second trip to SF I brought my daughter to enjoy the city and - I thought - the hotel. I requested a room with a tub at booking and that was accepted. When we arrived we were taken to a room without a tub and told that the other room was being renovated. !@#*!!! I asked if there was another room with a tub and told "no". I then asked for some accommodation for the disappointment and trouble. Even negotiated down to just covering my parking in the nearby lot. Nope! Not at all accommodating to a person who was ready to be a repeat customer. I won't stay there again, and you should be wary of promises made.

Yelp
I specifically sought out a hotel for an experience. Cornell Hotel De France was just the ticket, as an added bonus, they serve a continental breakfast in the morning as well. This was such a pleasant stay! The building was beautiful with so much history within it's walls. I was able to store my luggage so that I could explore the City prior to check in. Check in was super easy, I love the fact that I was given an actual key to my room, with a fob that would open the front door of the building. My room was perfect, the space was very intimate and I loved the decor. The shower was nice and hot, and the bathroom amenities were just what I needed. I slep very well in the queen size bed! There were plenty of pillows that were soft and comfortable. Breakfast in the basement was absolutely delicious, and such a nice suprise with the decor down there! I love both art and history, so this place really fascinated me. Checking out was a breeze, I just had to turn in my room key, and I was on my way very quickly! I would highly recommend this location to anyone wanting an experience over just a bed and bathroom! I look forward to returning the next time I am in San Francisco.

Yelp
Stayed here for the night. Went to a comedy show at the nearby Masonic and didn't want to deal with the long drive home. This place was about an 8 minute walk to the Masonic. It's on a very busy street. Lots of movement, both by cars and people. There are homeless people around, but that's expected in the city. Check in was easy. Front desk greeted me and gave me a room on the 4th floor. The room keys come with a key fob for the hotel entrance. Front desk mistakenly told me that my room was downstairs. I used the elevator to go downstairs and all I saw was the kitchen, dining area and the bathroom. Ended up using the stairs. Room was cozy and clean. Had the basic amenities except for fridge and/or microwave. Tv works great. Bed was comfortable. Pillows were ok. I've had worse. Not too soft, but not firm. Room came with 3 bottled waters. No charge. Check out was easy. You can either check out via email or front desk. Noise level was not bad considering the hotel was on a busy street. Parking is challenging. There is a parking garage down the street. Don't park there. $90 for an overnight. Over heard that people were being charged the same price for just a couple of hours. Unbelievable! There were signs that the garage accepts validation from select hotels. This hotel was not one of them. Overall, hotel was great but the parking wasn't.

Yelp
Enjoyed my stay in this boho bed and breakfast in Union Square East. The room was charmingly decorated, and I was on the top floor dedicated to Modigliani. Each floor is themed around a different artist -- Chagall, Kandinsky, Matisse etc. Very cool antique elevator. Breakfast is served in a medieval dungeon with the most bizarre music. But it's clean, conveniently located and the staff is friendly. Very reasonably priced.

Yelp
Absolutely stay here! We had such a phenomenal experience and I cannot wait to go back. From the check in, the beautiful reception area, and the eclectic (and erotic) art work on the walls, you are definitely transported to a different land and time. While the rooms are on the small side, you don't go to San Francisco and just stay indoors, so it served its purpose. We stayed for 24 hours, but every time we touched the bed, we passed out! LOL The way the hotel is set up, depending on the room you get you will have a view of the city streets or...an alley haha. But its the city, its expected! Now, the price point may dissuade you (spent about $250 for one night), but it was in a prime location, keyed access, and completely indoor. There is a kitchen and restaurant onsite (which wasn't open due to renovations), and they have one of the oldest lifts in the city, so riding up to the 5th floor was an adventure. There is also roof access up some VERY steep stairs. We will for sure stay here on future visits!

Yelp
The Mrs. and I spent Friday, September 15th to Sunday, September 17th at the Cornell Hotel De France. Our daughter's elementary school teacher recommended the Cornell years ago and we finally decided to try it out. When we visit San Francisco we try to stay in hotels that have character. We've stayed at the Taj Campton Place, the Mark Hopkins, and what used to be the Sir Francis Drake(now Beacon Grand) to name a few. The Cornell definitely has character. The building was erected in 1910. It was purchased by a French couple in the 1970's who lovingly restored it offering travelers an authentic European experience. The Cornell sits on the corner of Bush and Powell. A great location within walking distance of some really cool bars and restaurants. If you are traveling from SFO you can take the BART to Powell Street. Then ride the cable car to Powell and Bush. Just let the conductor know where you want to go and they will help you with your luggage and stop on Bush. Here is a tip, there is a cable car stop at O'Farrell and Powell about two blocks up from the start of the cable care route. It isn't clearly marked and there isn't a lot of people waiting. Board the cable car there. We checked into the Cornell shortly after 3 p.m. and were assigned room 308. It was towards the back of the hotel. I'll be honest and say that the rooms that are depicted on the Cornell's website are nothing like the real thing. Room 308 is a small room with a queen bed. It small table with two chairs and a decent sized bathroom. Our room had no air conditioning and from what I understand none of the rooms do. A nice breeze blew through the room from the open window. Luckily, it wasn't hot outside. One of the windows opened up to a fire escape. The tv didn't work well. The reception wasn't the best but you don't go to San Francisco to watch TV, right? The bed was surprisingly comfortable. The decor of the hotel is very old world European. It reminded me a little bit of the Haunted Mansion. The cool part was the very temperamental cage elevator. Other guests would forget to close the sliding door so the elevator would get stuck. Usually on the second floor for some reason. The other guests we encountered were from Europe. Some of them were very rude to the hotel staff which I found off putting. I noticed when we checked in that the two young ladies at the front desk were a bit abrasive. I didn't understand why until I witnessed their interactions with other guests and how rude those guests were. The Mrs. and I were very friendly towards the staff and they were very friendly towards us. The Cornell doesn't have onsite parking. There is a public parking garage down the street that you can park at and pay the parking fees at the hotel.

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews, but I felt like this one was necessary. I booked this hotel because it was affordable and had the best reviews in its price range. Overall, the stay was okay, but a few things threw me off. I prepaid in full through a booking app but was surprised at check-in with a $20/night "amenities fee." I was told it might be waived if I didn't use the perks (breakfast, WiFi, water, coffee), so I avoided them all--only to be charged anyway. On top of that, I was charged an unexpected $100 deposit, which wasn't clearly explained. At checkout, I was told I still owed $60. Thankfully, they refunded the deposit quickly--credit where it's due. The lobby smelled like a dog had an accident that wasn't properly cleaned up, and my bedding had a slightly "already been slept in" smell. That said, the housekeeper was very sweet, even with a bit of a language barrier. The woman who checked me in was friendly and did her best to explain the fees, and the young man at checkout was well-meaning and kind--I made sure he knew I was frustrated, but not with him personally. I recommend they let guests know before arrival about the amenities fee and deposit, and be much more clear and upfront at check-in. A little transparency (and maybe a carpet cleaning) would go a long way. P.S. There is a cool old school elevator which is slightly scary to ride the first time but you get over it. And charming decor. Clean bathrooms which I really appreciated too.

Yelp
On a recent visit to San Francisco we booked a stay in The Cornell Hotel De France. Upon arrival we were informed the elevator wasn't working and that we would need to climb 5 flight of stairs to get to our room. They did have an available staff person to carry our luggage up. A prior email would have been appreciated, but perhaps we would have switched our hotel then...... As compensation, we were offered a free continental breakfast. If you had any reason to not be comfortable climbing narrow curving stairs, I am not sure what they would do. The restaurant is not open in the hotel so do not plan on eating there. The room was clean and quaint. Reasonable location to some restaurants in walking distance.

Yelp
I had a great experience, my room was small but very cozy and clean, the location is very safe. The breakfast was good and the customer service was great! I love their coffee!

Yelp
3.5 stars rounded up. First impressions: cute interior. Think auberge somewhere in Europe. However their old fashioned elevator was not the most reliable and I get stuck in there no less than two times in the first hour of being here. I had to call reception to get me out and it was a good thing I had my phone with me! Best to really pretend you are in Europe and just use the stairs. The locks on the doors are the old fashioned key types. Easily copied. There is a fob to let you through the front door however. While the room next to us had a deadbolt, our hotel room did not (#301). The room itself faced Bush Street and was very charming with hand painted prints on the ceiling and wall. There was only one garbage can, no tissues, no fridge or microwave, and squeaky floors. Our upstairs neighbor liked to pace back and forth quite loudly - apparently it kept my mom awake but it didn't bother me as much. Toiletries were from L'Occitaine which is a nice touch. The bed was comfy enough and the room, while on the smaller side, accommodated my daughter, my mom and me comfortably. Location is convenient to Union Square, Chinatown and surrounds. Parking is around $40 which is very reasonable, as they have an agreement with the garage across the street. It's good for 24 hours. If you book with Expedia, the continental breakfast is not included! So best to book directly. Found this out the hard way. However the kind hotel staff sent up continental breakfasts to our room despite having booked with Expedia which I appreciated!

Yelp
Please beware.. this hotel is dishonest about available accommodations, promises refunds and lies about following through post check out. There website and hotels.com listing says private parking available.. it is not! 50$+ for one night at a garage about a half a block away! When I voiced my concerns to GM Karena, she promised a refund for the 75$ I paid to park for one night.. when I called to follow up a couple days after check out, she told me it was refunded as a credit to my Expedia account I've checked all my accounts and email- no refund has been given. When attempting to communicate with Karena she was very defensive, rude and unprofessional when I tried to communicate with her and confirm a refund had actually been processed. She claims her staff was told to contact me (they did not), she refused to provide any proof to show the refund had been issued and claimed it had been refunded to my "Expedia" account. When I informed her that the room was reserved under a different site and no credit or refund has been processed on these sites or to the card used on the reservation, she started yelling at me and tried to escalate the dispute. I ended up disconnecting the call because it was obvious she was being dishonest, aggressive and her unprofessionalism made it impossible for me to continue engaging with her. Also beware the rooms look NOTHING like the photos, they're dirty, run down and my bed had a 4 inch pipe sticking out from the baseboard. They covered it with a towel and rubber bands to keep guests from injuring themselves on it. Also the elevator broke down twice during our one night stay which was a major issue for the other guests in my party that had mobility issues. Overall the room was run down, dirty and the service from the hotel manager was down right fraudulent!

Yelp
Stayed here recently and the pictures online looked nothing like the real room. We stayed in Room 507, "cozy" room. It was Cozy all right.... Cons: 1. Fan didnt work and it was super hot, even with the window open all night. 2. Bed had hair all over it, had to ask for clean sheets. 3. No towels. Had to ask for towels 4. Not even a bar of soap, had to ask for soap 5. Room is dingy, small and dark 6. Clock read 1:36pm the entire time we were there. 7. Bed was hard and uncomfortable 8. Shower was moldy Pros: 1. Location - very close to everything 2. Fast checkin and out Overall, I felt duped and scammed. I thought I paid for a nice sized room but instead got an old closet. Do yourself a favor, stay at the Mariott, it's the same price!

Yelp
I have stayed at this hotel/ b and b three times over the years and have really loved it- the basement "castle"rooms, the stately sitting room, and especially the decorative touches of the Lamberts- not to mention their friendly dog! The rooms are adequately sized and offer lovely bathrooms and decor- hand painted walls, nice bedding and quiet rooms. Imagine our surprise when we arrived this July and found out the lamberts had sold the hotel-no more delicious breakfasts, rooms being let out only on the first two floors. Sadly, no more pupper either. The lamberts had not modified the kitchen or updated the elevator and both were out of commission. We still had a lovely room, Balmain toiletries and wonderful staff, but only a continental breakfast with grocery store croissants. This would not keep me from staying there again, but i hope they can work out their technical snafus. The hotel is right on the trolley line and the stop is at the end of the street. Surprisingly the rooms are totally quiet despite the busy location.

Yelp
The room was clean and the free coffee and tea were a great touch. The hotel staff was efficient and made the stay good. I stayed this week (late February) and they had absolutely no heat in the rooms. The temperatures were around 40 degrees. The rooms were so, so cold I woke up every day dreading getting out of bed. The blanket was not warm enough. This was almost unlivable. Everything else was great, but they really need to fix this issue. It's probably not cold to the staff, but late at night wearing pajamas, it is not nearly warm enough. I had to wear a sweatshirt to sleep and still woke up multiple times per night shivering.

Yelp
Book your hotel directly with them and get the parking package if you have a car. Parking is a premium and if you're going to try for street parking just realize it is on a steep hill. The garage is now open 24/7, and located across the street. They're not the friendliest and you get one in/out privilege per day. Being said that, the hotel is what matters. It's centrally located, near the cable cars, union square and 4 minutes walk to the 15 bus that takes you to the Chase Center. It's very secure and you need to get buzzed in on your first visit. From there, you'll use your room key to let yourself in. So don't lose your key!! We asked for a high room and quiet so we had room 508, queen size room facing the building in the back. It's not the largest room but considering San Francisco real estate is like NYC, it's pretty big for what we paid. Queen bed, plenty of storage space, a desk, chair, tv and the bathroom had a shower and lots of counter space. Amenities: - coffee maker with tea bags. - L'Occitane bar soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. FYI: No body wash - bottle water and chocolate by your bedside - a safe and iron/ board if you need it - Wi-Fi There are USB plugs for your devices. It's the pandemic so we opted no daily room service. Instead, we swap out towels, which are placed in sealed bags in front of the door every day. In addition we also get new toiletries and coffee amenities, also sealed in a bag. We leave our dirty towels and such in the bag, outside our door. No disturbances either! There's no central heat or air, but they offer a fan and radiator heater. We're here in the winter and it's not blasting heat, but it kept the room fairly warm. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance. There's a sushi place and a pizza place less than 100 feet away. Overall a great experience and I'd come back.

Yelp
Stayed here one night to be closer to a concert at Chase Center. Very lively area We had complimentary wine to our room (which was great). The hotel & elevator was very unique, French style BUT our room's restroom DID NOT HAVE A DOOR! I didn't object to it because I was too tired to complain about it, but that was the case. Also it's not a cheap hotel, which worried me. Maybe it's common in French old timers and they let the door out on purpose doesn't feel like it.

T.e.e. T.

Yelp
Pros: cool vibe, I loved the elevator. We were in room 208 and they had a balcony which was cool. The breakfast was good too. They also have a lot of places to eat at in walking distance. Cons: no parking, you have to pay $40 bucks to park in the parking garage across the street and cant just go in and out, which was super inconvenient. The bed was also uncomfortable. Overall I am glad we stayed here because it was a new experience but I wouldn't do it again. Once is enough.

Yelp
Delightful boutique hotel. Very nice staff. Clean, beautiful rooms. Breakfast is included, nicely substantial. Easy access to valet parking across the street. I'm looking forward to the next time.

Mary M.

Yelp
The charm & comfort of the room. The attentiveness of the staff. The free breakfast was fine. Some warm eggs & sausages & toast/bagels. A good experience for sure.

Hazel H.

Yelp
This is very close to my ideal hotel, an old hotel with lots of closet space, a delightful breakfast, eccentric decor and a kind staff who treat you like a human being in this era of "I'm sorry our system won't let me do that" they checked us in when our bank was acting up and said we could sort it out in the morning. Is some of the furniture slightly wonky? Yes, but that just adds to the charm. The only thing I'd change is the polyester bed linens, but everything is clean and pretty. When you're looking for a hotel with personality but not "luxury" this is the place. A hotel for real bohemians

Yelp
Nice and cozy bed and breakfast place. Staff are friendly. I gave 4 stars cause the elevator was not working and I don't like going up and down stairs. Planning to go back once their elevator works again

Yelp
This hotel's service was terrible! I was told I could check-in early, but when I arrived I was denied access to my room. My credit card was overcharge by a considerable amount when I was finally able to check in. I spoke with management, and they refunded me the money. But after I checked out, they called to ask me for more money. They messed up the entire process and made me pay for it. I do not recommend!

Lacy B.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, but cold and disorganized staff. The lady during check in was very confused and kept asking me if I had pre paid, which I replied yes. I put my card down for a deposit and was told it would be $100. To my surprise, I had $350 taken out of my account. When I went down to sort this out the man at the front desk acted like he couldn't care less and was very unwelcoming and unapologetic. He kept saying that it was a mistake and will get refunded but so far only the $100 from my deposit is back in my account, So this hotel has charged me $246 for no reason. Would not recommend. My friend also got overcharged, I would steer clear!

Yelp
Stayed here the night before my half marathon race and I got the queen bed room. I was a little skeptical about the size of the room and bathroom but it wasn't too shabby for San Francisco! You can't beat the location being so close to Union Square and shopping! Check in was pretty easy. It's a pretty old building but they did a great job decorating and making it feel very European with hand painted wall decor and lots of French paintings and statues. There was only room key and a dongle for the front entrance door. The attendant showed us to our room using the old fashioned elevator even though our room was on the second floor. It was a nice introduction to the European hotel feel. The queen bed was very comfy and the sheets were clean. Pillows were perfect and there wasn't a funky smell or anything. Bathroom shower had the right amount of pressure and the floors were spotless. They had l'occitane shampoo and conditioner, and bar soap.

Yelp
Love this cute little hotel! Price was great for the city and walls weren't thin, rooms were cozy but not too small. Comfy beds. Hot breakfast served in their onsite basement restaurant with eggs, bacon, potatoes, coffee, juices/milk, and bread items. Staff was so friendly and welcoming, they would open the door for us every time we were coming or going and wish us a good day. Elevator worked just fine and loved that we could open the windows in our deluxe queen room. Starbucks was a 5 minute walk away, lots of options for lunch and dinner in a walkable distance. About a 20-30 min Uber to Golden Gate Park. Valet is available right across the street for $40/night, which is typical for the area.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed our stay at Cornell Hotel de France during a long weekend sisters trip for my little sister's birthday. The value is fantastic, and with a very comfortable room, charming decor, and friendly staff. Perfect location to numerous delicious restaurants, cafes, & transportation. During our stay in October 2021- just a note that the breakfast restaurant was not open during that time due to COVID. Also we had requested no cleaning, but the staff still came to clean the first night, so if that's the option you take, just double-confirm it with the front desk.

Yelp
Quiet stay but...we had no hot water in our shower or sink, and no apologies. Only one coffee in the room. We had the complementary breakfast but it was cold and running out. I took the last croissant on the tray.

Yelp
I cannot say enough great things about this boutique hotel. From the beautiful exterior to the museum like lobby, we were transported to Europe! It was a trip within a trip! All of the art and decor were spectacular. Each and every member of the staff were delightful and helpful. We loved our warm croissants for breakfast and felt safe during our stay. Everything was sparkling clean. Can't wait to return the next time we are in SF! We booked directly through the hotel's website and received additional perks. Parking is limited so we kept our car in the garage and used Lyft or Uber to get around.

Yelp
We stayed at the Cornell during our trip last year when the hotel that we usually stay at still wasn't open due to the virus. I wasn't sure about staying here but after reading all the reviews decided it was a good place to stay. So glad that we did! This hotel is so cute, colorful, quiet and clean! The room is so inviting! This is such a great boutique hotel. The interior with all of the art and the paintings and just so much to see. I love the antique elevator. There is just so much to this hotel that you can't go wrong staying here! The bed is so soft, comfortable and inviting that you lay down and immediately go to sleep. The bathroom was very clean with L'Occitane bath products. We got a boxed breakfast of croissants, yogurt, fresh fruit and orange juice every morning. The staff is great and very helpful. The location is great. There is Uncle Vito's pizza across the street and Cesario's around the corner and many other shops and places to eat. Book on the website and you will get a better price and breakfast!

Yelp
If you like tired and jaded decor, this is the place to be. Faded posters of French artists are on every wall with hand painted motifs on ceiling and doors. The room was excessively hot in the evening when we arrived in October making it impossible to sleep. No air conditioning and even the window open to the fire escape did nothing to cool us. It did worry us to leave it open as the area didn't feel safe. Bathroom was a little sad, with clean but lack lustre towels. It was over priced so our expectations were dashed at the start of our vacation. It bore no resemblance to images we viewed on its website. Stayed only one night and moved on.

Yelp
This is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in this neighborhood but I probably wouldn't stay here again unless I needed the location. The good: This is one of the cleanest hotels I've EVER stayed at. And I travel a lot, at varying prices. Thanks for your attention to detail Cornell. Not a spiderweb or smear to be seen, every corner clean. Carpet clean. I wish every hotel was like this. And it didn't smell like heavy cleaners either. Beautiful historical look all over. Friendly and efficient staff. The bad: holy crap is this place loud. You can hear soooo much - traffic noise, hallway noise, people inside other rooms doing lots of stuff, door slamming, the restaurant adjacent, the radiator... The interior walls are thin and the rooms are pretty small. It was the quietest from 1a-6a, but if you like to sleep early or late, good luck. A long stay here would simply not work for me. The bed was good, just a little firm for me but great bedding, not too heavy and breathed well. They also use a thick plastic mattress barrier which I appreciate in a hotel. Nice roomy bathroom. Room has 3 locks on it to give you that extra secure feeling.

Yelp
No hot water and no help with bags. Never going to stay at this place - tried to reach out many times but everything gets ignored. But they can still send me offers to stay there. NO SORRY NO NOTHING. DONT STAY HERE

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. They were absolutely wonderful. My family and I had such a fantastic stay. Franck, the manager, was incredible and so accommodating. He was kind enough to give us many different snacks and waters daily during our stay. Joe, one of the night receptionists, was also so kind and helpful when I checked in. The cleaning woman was also super friendly and nice. The room was so nice, clean and beautiful. It accommodated three people very comfortably. My favorite part was the bathroom. It was obviously newly renovated, with a rain shower and very nice sink setup. Because we booked on their website, we also received free breakfast every morning which was so delicious. It consisted of fruits, juices, croissants and other yummy things. The hotel was exceedingly covid safe. Even when we had to sign papers, they cleaned the pens with Clorox wipes. They offer daily cleaning with disinfectant spray if you would like, however we opted out of daily cleaning. They still provided towels and new soaps at our door every morning. Again, we had such a great time. This is one of the best hotel stays I have ever experienced. They were so kind, and the hotel itself is just gorgeous. If you are in the San Francisco area, do not hesitate to stay here. I know I will be telling my friends and family about it.

Yelp
Great service, clean room, and comfortable bed. They brought fresh towels, took trash away, and gave me new toiletries every day. Would return in the future for any stay.

Yelp
I stayed here for the first time when I attended a conference in San Francisco. All the hotels were ridiculously priced and the Cornell was the least expensive option from my short list. The hotel is near the corner of Bush and Powell and the area seemed very safe. A 5-minute walk from Union Square and an 8-minute walk to Chinatown. The hotel has a small sitting area, front desk, computer station with printer, and coffee and tea station. The rooms are small, bathroom small, but everything was very clean and that is one of the most important things for me. The bed was comfortable, there's a mini fridge, closet, and a TV. The hotel has a restaurant named Jeanne O'Arc. It's prix fixe French cuisine ($56/ February 2020). I would like to try it next time. Across the street is Uncle Vito's Pizza that offers delicious Italian food. If you exit the hotel and take a left you will find Sushi Toni which has fresh sushi coupled with great service. One block down Powell you will find a Starbucks. If you have a car, they offer parking at 750 Bush St. All the employees at the hotel were very nice and friendly. I had a late flight back home and they stored my luggage so I could go sightseeing.

Yelp
I booked via Hotels.com for a reasonable one-night stay during Memorial Day weekend. Check-in is at 3:00PM and check-out is at 11:00AM, ask for an extended check-out time, if needed. Bell-hop is available for luggage before or after your stay. There's no valet parking, but a parking garage is up the street at 750 Bush. 24-hour parking is $32 plus tax and you'll receive a stamp/validation from Cornell Hotel at check-out, which you'll give to the parking garage attendant(s). Free WIFI! No complimentary breakfast offered. Per GPS, it's an 11 minute walk to Union Square. The hotel and room both appeared to be clean! The beds were comfortable, offered ample storage space, and had a roomy bathroom. No microwave or mini fridge! The hotel entrance door locks at a certain time, so you need a key FOB to get inside, which I liked. We encountered three different staff members, who were all pleasant and helpful. For the price-point and location, I'd stay here again!

Yelp
The cutest, most quaint Victorian hotel near Union Square--Feels like Europe transplanted into SF. After you step in, you are greeted with French music and the most beautiful decor. All of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. My room was very adorable and decorated with painted birds and flowers on the walls. All the amenities were wonderful: the bed was comfy and clean; there was free WiFi; the shampoo, conditioner, and lotion were all L'occitane. I also got the chance to meet the owners in the lobby. They were the sweetest people and offered me a glass of champage to celebrate with them! So wonderful and kind. I would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
This Boutique hotel is amazing. I read alot of reviews before making my decision to stay here and I'm glad I made the right decision. All the reviews are on point. I have never seen so many people agree on what a great place this is . I booked direclty on their website and got an unbeatable price of $111 per night . It is immaculate, charming, beautiful and so clean! Upon our arrival at 10:30pm , Joe came outside to greet us as we pulled up to the front and help with our bags. He is very friendly, professional and provided us with so much useful information for our stay, the hotel ,parking and the neighborhood. Check in was seamless and quick. He helped us with our bags to our room and let us leave the car in front while we settled in . The lobby is beautiful, our favorite part is the old style elevator with iron scissor gates. So many hand painted murals and ceilings throughout the hotel. Security is great, as you need a sensored key fob to get through the front door. We went to park at the parking lot right across the street, so we felt safe being out so late and having to walk back to the hotel alone. Our room was beautiful. Very clean, lots of closets, drawers and storage for our belongings. Iron, ironing board, hangers, safe and blow dryer are all provided. There are many outlets, standard plug and usb, througout the room. We loved the drop down writing desk in the room. The bathroom was very spacious , clean , full bath/shower and stocked with L'Occitane products. The shampoo is heaven with so much lather. In the morning, they had complimentary coffee/tea and a big box of breakfast items labeled with our room number. Inside the box were fruits, yogurt, juice and a warm flaky , soft croissant. Franck greeted us and gave us great tourist attractions to visit and patiently answered all our questions. The location is great! A few blocks walking to China Town. Trolley stops on the corner which ends at Fisherman's Wharf. Sears Fine Food for breakfast a block away, along with Starbucks, Walgreens and 7 -11 . A laundromat a few doors down. Union Square is a 5 minute walk with luxury brand stores, and places to eat and a park to stroll through. I cannot say enough good things about this Boutique hotel. I don't plan on returning to CA in the near future, but I would definately stay here again without hesitation and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone. The entire staff are so friendly and it has been an ultimate pleasure staying at Cornell Hotel De France.

Yelp
While traveling, my friend came across this gem last minute on an app - to our surprise. We were greeted & checked our luggage as we had arrived a bit early from our hostel, by a sweet older asian lady who was so welcoming and accommodating as well as when we asked if we could have an extra mattress in the room. The entrance feels like a hostel or air bnb abroad, not like you're in America, Frenchie for sure Loved it! Cornell Hotel de France is so adorably & cozy, you can relax in the lounge, while charging your phone or sip tea in the tea room. Have a healthy and filling yummy breakfast in the downstairs restaurant, which is included in the stay. Very well located, which we found appealing, we had a car rental we ended up returning and just uber-ing around town if we weren't running up and down the steep hills. Lots of restaurants, convenience and souvenir stores. We were pleasantly surprised when we discovered our room was in the very front with the big bay windows and lovely view!! The rooms are decorated so cute, classy like a vintage dollhouse! The bed was so0o comfy my friend and I totally got bed stuck staying in, ha! The bathroom, if you're a bath tub enthusiast, or even if you're not - you should enjoy the relaxing and soothing deep filled french bath, I took one of the best baths here. So clearly I loved my stayed at the Cornell Hotel de France, I stayed two nights and I wish I would've stayed longer. I will definitely stay here again while in SF.

Yelp
I'm giving the Cornell 5 stars because for $135/night we stayed in SF on the Bay to Breakers weekend and got a great deal on a good sized corner top floor room. It was quiet except you could just hear the trolley bells and the top of the Drake was our view: http://www.andrewwhyte.com/photography/graphics/featured-pics-2/_DSC5708-01.jpg The room included "farm" breakfasts of eggs and potatoes or French toast with orange juice and coffee all served in their delightful Jeanne D'Arc themed stone farmhouse restaurant. Beautiful leaded glasswork, and fascinating collections of things like a dozen coal heated irons on a banister. Each floor is a show of French artists: Chagall, Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec, Matisse, Modigliani. The staff were pleasant, and the owner is the operator so there is a very personal touch to the hotel. The room had a queen bed, a claw foot tub, a divan, a bed bench, and 36" screen flatscreen TV. There is free WiFi as well. The hotel is pet friendly, but not really child friendly. Next door is a male sex club, but on the other side is a better than decent sushi place called Sushi Toni. The Cornell isn't for everyone, but it is a good choice for a beautiful & quiet hotel three blocks from Union Square.

Yelp
If I could give this hotel 10 stars I most definitely would. The Cornell Hotel de France is like waking up in France every single day. My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 days/3 nights and ABSOLUTELY enjoyed it. Staff was amazing, the rooms are always clean, and everything was just absolutely perfect. C'est très magnifique l'hôtel en San Francisco!!!!!!

Yelp
Yeah I just want to send a message out to Kelly A and Janey A., and anyone else that is thinking about booking here and expecting a 1000 sq ft room. The Sir Francis Drake Hotel, The Four Seasons, The St Regis, The Fairmont. These hotels are ALL located less than 1 mile from the Cornel Hotel de France. Now instead of putting in a bad review of this fine hotel in UNION SQUARE with REASONABLE rates and a 5 star restaurant why don't you cheapskate motherfuckers go to one of the above mentioned hotels and back off hard working people who are trying to make visiting San Francisco an AFFORDABLE experience! No I don't have any affiliation with this establishment. If you read any of my other reviews I just can't stand it when cheapskates bash independent businesses.

Yelp
The hotel and the manager Franck were wonderful! The hotel is perfectly clean with so much attention to beautiful artwork and classic fixtures. The bathrooms have been renovated and are perfect. After spending so much time during the past year at home, I was very appreciative to have had such an old fashioned friendly experience out of town, in San Francisco.

Yelp
I definitely recommend staying here if you are in the city! The staff is so nice and attentive and very COVID cautious which was much appreciated. The hotel has a lovely charm to it and the rooms are very clean and well decorated. We loved the free hotel breakfast and were also able to leave our bags here after check out before our late flights. We appreciated how accommodating and friendly everyone was. Can't wait to come back the next time we're in the area!

Yelp
This is a wonderful place. When we first stepped inside the hotel it felt like being actually in France. The small stairs, the old elevators, cute rooms just reminded us of our trip to Europe. Jose the receptionist was very helpful and patient with us. We enjoyed our dinner at the basement restaurant Jeanne D' Arc. We were greeted by a violinist and escorted by the Maître d' to our table. Food and service is excellent. When we went back to our room we got a call from the Maître d', he apologized because he didn't know that we were actually staying in the hotel that night. He gave us an additional 15% off our dinner bill. He refunded the previous bill and issued the bill with 15% off, transaction was smooth. The only problem I had was during the night. Our room is next to the busy street. I am a light sleeper so the noise bothered me. But with my friend she slept through the night without problem. Maybe next time I will get the back rooms away from the street. Still I would recommend this hotel. Walking distance to Union Square and Chinatown.

Yelp
To start off the location is perfect. But the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. The rooms are really comfy and clean. Highly recommend
