How Vermont Restaurants Are Rebuilding After July Floods | Eater

"This Bari-based pub suffered acrid floodwater in its basement that ruined hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of perishable inventory and equipment and forced about 35 staff onto unemployment; the owner estimates a mid-August reopening and says the large volunteer response to cleanup eased the stress." - Jacqueline Cain

Google
CPK has the best Miller Lites in town. Mike the bartender knows how to sling and keep the beers flowing. Great spot for after work beers. If you are on the strict only cheese burger diet. I highly recommend the smash burgers and all the variations. The smash sauce is great on the burger and for dipping fries. Fries are the best I've had anywhere. Staff is great too. 5 stars all around.

Google
Everything was delicious, but these were the best wings I've had in a long, LONG time! Crispy outside, juicy, tender inside... Thai Chili was my favorite but Maple Bourbon certainly didn't disappoint! Highly recommend!!

Google
I went a little over a week ago, and I was so impressed. I’ve never eaten here or had a drink, yet the staff was so welcoming and answered all of my questions. I ordered a few different things, a favorite being a margarita. I was very impressed with the food as well, possibly the best Mac and cheese in Vermont. Perfect experience!!

Google
My wife and I love dining at The Cornerstone. Their food is always fantastic, and we especially enjoy their appetizers. The owners come across as really great people. Highly recommend!

Google
Excellent food selection. Reasonable price and my Pub Burger with substituted onion rings was on point.

Google
I have always had the best experiences here. Michael sure knows how to make a delicious cocktail and Sarah is my favorite server her memory is impeccable. The staff is always so friendly and attentive. 10/10!

Google
We went here for Barre, VT's first Wing Walk -- a half dozen or so eatery chicken wing comp for the best wings in Barre. We had their dry rub and buffalo wings. They were fabulous! Great cook, perfectly applied flavorings, a couple NA beers, and, of course, Lauren who was a gem of a server. I'll be back, fo sho!

Google
Ate a TON of dishes with my family Saturday. Mac n cheese: a 7 very mid Buffalo wings: 10! My sis sucked these down! Fried pickles: 6 love that they’re chips but too much batter Baguette and dipping oil: a 4. The oil was good but $8 for bread? Get real the price brought this score down Truffle fries: TEN OUT OF 10! Period! Mexican street corn dip: 8! Very good slightly sweet but delicious! Fried cauliflower Parmesan flavor: a decent 7 but would’ve been excellent with a special dip Fried fish plate: 4 regular fries were atrocious, not enough tartar sauce and the fish was way too greasy. Batter was the same as fried pickles which was weird. Slaw was decent and fresh Mango cheesecake: 7 very good but needed more mango sauce on top because it was a bit dry FINAL opinion. WAY overpriced , decent dishes with some superstars! Service was meh but these days it’s hard to find staff. Had to ask for water several times and she’s only checked on us as she was rushing by.

Yelp
Found a nice restaurant in town that was still open! They have several beers on draft! The pumpkin cider was amazing! The staff was super quick. The fried cauliflower with Thai chili was great for an app. I have the steak special. Medium! So good! Perfection! The sides could've been a little bigger but I think they were thinking about plating instead of my stomach which was famished from hiking. Would definitely go again! They also have several TVs to catch the game! My friends got the stuffed baked haddock. It needs a bit of seasoning! Something! Anything! It was a little dry too. :/ but my food was great!

Yelp
Let me first say that the service was great! They were very accommodating with our group and our waitress was very friendly. It was a cute place too. Drinks were good, our group got a variety of beers and cocktails and everyone liked theirs. I got the Tito's Strawberry Lemonade, and it was a bit sweeter than anticipated but in a good way! Food was pretty good but nothing really stood out. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was cooked perfectly with good seasoning. But I had the Mac n cheese on the side and it was pretty flavorless. Overall, if I came back to VT, I would consider going here and maybe just trying a different dish!

Yelp
We came here for dinner after a movie. The hostess was very friendly as was our server. The menu is a great mix of different pub food, with decadent mac and cheese choices, burgers, tacos, some of which is more elevated, such as swordfish tacos, which is what I ordered. They were excellent. Our cocktails were good, too. A really nice establishment in Barre.

Yelp
What happened to Cornerstone? When this restaurant opened it was a lovely option for a special evening out. The food was amazing and the service was great. Not so much anymore. Soggy vegetables, overcooked meat and ho-hum menu options. It took over a hour from the time we arrived to our entree being served. The waitress not once asked how the food was and when we indicated we were ready for the check she walked by and tossed the check on table. The whole experience was a bummer :(

Yelp
Drinks and Appetizers were great. Good service, would definitely visit again. Fried Pickles were tasty.

J G.

Yelp
Don't order the Wedge Salad without your reading glasses. They bring you a (small) pile of romaine leaves with ranch dressing for $15. Then they explain that the fine print tells you it's not an actual wedge salad, so it was our fault for ordering it. We also ordered the swordfish tacos. True to the region, they were not bad per say, but if you are from anywhere else, you might be expecting flavors such as chili, cilantro, chipotle smoke or acidity, so lower your expectations to filling and not yucky. The staff was nice.

Yelp
Cornerstone is a great place to grab lunch or a quick dinner. My husband and I have been here many times over the past 7 years. We especially love their tomato soup and grilled cheese for lunch, and their burgers. They make a hamburger that my hubby loves, and it's always cooked just the way he requests. I often order their black bean burger, which is huge and really tasty. They serve the black bean burger with lettuce, tomato and coleslaw on top, and I love it. Their fries and onion rings are amazing, really crispy and fresh. I always order an IPA from the bar list. It goes perfectly with their casual fare. The restaurant itself is quite large, with 2 distinct dining sections. It's always very clean and cheerful. Servers are friendly and helpful. I've never had a bad experience.

Yelp
Great food, service and right in the midst of Barre-across from a super granite statue.

Yelp
I love how this restaurant was literally on a corner of a street. I was traveling all day and needed a place to eat and this tavern/pub was the perfect spot. There was no wait on a Saturday night and the food came very quick. I got the Pub burger and onion rings. They were both amazing, the burger had a lot of flavor despite being so simple. My mom got the turkey club and sweet potato fries which were also great. I loved the environment and our waitress was very sweet. If I'm ever in the area again, definitely will be back.
google avatar

Amy R.

Yelp
Overall, this is a solid place to grab food and drinks. Food was bit on the pricy side for pub food, $18 for fish and chips, however the service was excellent. The reason why I didn't leave a 5 star review was my fish and chips seemed a little over fried and a bit saturated with oil. To drink I had the tiki rum punch. The drink itself came in a tiki glass and was very sweet. You couldn't taste the rum, which is food for some but dangerous for others. Since I arrived for an early dinner I was able to be seated immediately but for Saturday night, I would recommend making a reservation if you're not a party of 1. If I find myself in Barre again, I'd come back again.

Joseph P.

Yelp
The food here is very tasty. I got the Buffalo wings and onion rings, the wings were some of the best I've ever had and the onion rings were spectacular as well. All of the staff were very nice and the food came out in a timely fashion. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean.

Yelp
Solid all around experience. Comfortable environment and good food. Wife loved the mac and cheese. My burger was cooked perfectly. Great spot to stop in Barre.

Yelp
Nice place with friendly staff and a good beer selection but the food was under seasoned.

Yelp
great, busy, ambiance. good service. steak tacos were a bit underwhelming, however the buffalo wings and parmesan truffle fries were delightful. would return just for the truffle fries :) also enjoyed the fiddlehead IPA, as usual.

Yelp
Decent food some mistakes but it's all good. Service was alright but was also very slow. Prices where decent

Yelp
Best pork and beans EVER!!! The Poutine was also number 1 made with curd. Came into town to ski and had the best dinner. No complaints!!! Can't say enough!!
google avatar

Troy S.

Yelp
This food was good. The Caesar salad was as fresh as my mom and the dressing was creamy but not too heavy y'know? The drinks were all that I was expecting. The waitress was very nice and a fun place you go with your family.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I'd rate this place 6 stars if I could it is an awesome place It wasn't too busy so our server Becky Sue Was super nice and recommended some places to visit in the area.. Also, the poutine and Vermont burger was amazing and good beer selection.

Yelp
Always great food and service. Generous portions. Our family loves to support this local restaurant

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
First, make a reservation. It's a busy place with good food and a nice pub style atmosphere. Good for singles too, to eat at the bar. Tasty food and don't miss the jar deserts.

Liz G.

Yelp
Food is outstanding in this Barre VT restaurant! Best place in town. Bartender Mike is the best!

Liz F.

Yelp
The food has always been good, although I notice that the variety on the menu is not what it was several years ago. The service can be a bit slow when it's crowded but the servers are friendly and helpful. The biggest drawback of this restaurant is that it has all the acoustic ambience of a crowded bus terminal. It is so noisy you can hardly hear your dinner companions. We went for dinner on a Wednesday hoping it wouldn't be crowded and therefore quieter, but to no avail. The management once told us they were looking into acoustic panels to lessen the sound, but they never went ahead with it. We won't be going back, as it's just not possible to enjoy dinner being assaulted on all sides by walls of sound. Angus Burger Chicken Quesadilla

Yelp
Delicious, delicious, delicious. And excellent service. We split the garden salad as an appetizer and both got different burgers. Both burgers were great and cooked very good. And the hand cut fries were phenomenal. My husband had a craft beer which he said was very good.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Your typical, reliable, classic burger place. their mac n cheese options there are absolutely incredible, and as someone who considers themself a mac n cheese connoisseur that is saying something. the service was good, it was busy but i still think our food came out in a timely manner. i got there just in time to get the last open table, it seems like they fill up fast for dinners regardless what day of the week it is. i would definitely recommend trying it out, they have another location in Northfeild as well!!
google avatar

Catlin A.

Yelp
Barre doesn't have a ton of choices sadly. Sitting at the bar is fine. The food is standard bar food and the maple mac n cheese is such a weird experiment.
google avatar

Gloria B.

Yelp
Nice little place. We had a great lunch there. Martinis and Blue Lemonade. Yum. No wait to be seated. Not a long wait for our food either. I ordered a burger with sweet potato fries. It was so good, even if it wasn't as pink/red as I'd have liked inside. My friend had the braised pork shank with jalapeño mac n' cheese. This was a huge serving. He doesn't usually have leftovers to take home but he did in this case. The staff was great, friendly. We would absolutely eat here again. Just maybe nog sit near the doors in cold weather.

Yelp
On a road trip, we wanted to look for a solid meal in Barre. Cornerstone had some great reviews so we decided to stop by. The food was fantastic, I would highly recommend the localvore burger (I asked for truffle fries with aioli on the side) and it was exactly what I wanted in a burger. Fresh, hot, and topped with empty cheese. The calamari was also great, but just know that the sauce is on the bottom. The reason I'm leaving four stars is due to the service. While attentive, our waitress gave my family and I bad vibes, like she didn't want to wait our table. I'm not sure if it's because we weren't locals, but either way, the food was good.

Allison B.

Yelp
We unknowingly went on their first day open since the flood. They had been closed for 6 weeks. The staff and customers were all elated. It was a very happy and festive atmosphere. Our server Amy was great. The food came out in a surprisingly reasonable time considering how many dishes were ordered in front of us. The food was delicious. The Nashville Hot sandwich was spot on. The turkey BLT was delicious with roasted turkey instead of the standard fare deli slice style. Great drink choices. We also really appreciated the details on all the fry substitution choices and how much they each cost. Other restaurants should take note of this. Usually the up charge is a surprise at the end on the bill or when we try to be proactive and ask, the server rarely knows. Bravo, CK!. We are looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen, along with its two other restaurants (and catering/food truck services), are all incredible. My first job was working as a bus boy/food runner for the company beginning in 2015, and in my time with the company, I worked at every location with the exception of their food truck (a newer addition). Believe me, I am endorsing their varying operations from someone who has seen it all! From their amazing food and quality customer service to their care for the communities they work in, Rich and Keith have created a staple of the Barre and surrounding communities. Their best menu item at CPK, in my humble opinion, is the steak tip dinner. Paired with a side of their perfected fries... it's simply the best. However, you seriously can't go wrong with a $5 burger on Tuesday nights, either; that's a family favorite for us. Anything you order you are sure to enjoy. ALSO, slightly less publicized/popular is Two Loco Guys, just down Main Street in Barre from Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen. TLG has delicious burritos, and some of the most friendly staff I have worked with. It's the perfect place to stop for lunch, and trust me, you'll leave feeling satisfied and full. Whenever I am home visiting in Barre, both of these restaurants are on my list of places to hit before I am gone again.
google avatar

Roger C.

Yelp
I have had lunch every Tuesday for years until the pandemic. I miss my routine and the incredible meals and drinks. They never disappoint and look forward to returning for great food and the best bartender in Vermont. Oh, dinner is amazing!

Jen R.

Yelp
Great food and good service. It's Just a bit noisy when crowded but some people do t mind that.

Yelp
So good!! The sugar shack mac might be one of the top 5 beat things I've ever eaten!!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a great spot to stop at for lunch. I read the reviews and wanted to try them while I was here in Vermont ( I'm from Texas ), it has a great vibe as soon as you walk in. I order the pot stickers and fish n chips. The pot stickers were good and love that Asian sauce they poured on top. The fish n chips were great as well . The fish had a light batter on it and was cooked great it was still flaky on the inside. The portions were very generous. They have a lot of different types of beer on tap. The staff was extremely nice and recommended great options for food and beer to go along with it. I would recommend anyone to give them a try if you haven't already.

Yelp
Yesterday, we stopped for lunch at Cornerstone. It was myself, my sister and her husband, and their two children, 2 and 6. Even though the place was not very full, the service was quite slow, which is tough when you have hungry kids. And it wasn't just the kitchen because even our drinks took a long time to come out. When the waitress finally brought the bill we were shocked to see that she had added a 20% tip for herself. When my brother-in-law asked about it, she said she had discretion to add a 20% tip for parties of 5 or more. When he asked to speak to the manager, he was told there was not one there and he tried to call twice later that night and recieved no response to his messages. I do not agree with the policy of adding a 20% tip for parties of 5, especially when that party is all one family with 2 kids and not the group of adults I believe those policies are meant for. Also the fact that we have been unable to contact management to discuss what happened means that we will not be returning, even though I do like the beer list there.

Tina R.

Yelp
Excellent service, classy restaurant and bar, yummy food!!! The Mac and cheese is a must try if you aren't doing keto. it's simply delicious.!!

Yelp
Great food and service. One of my favorites in the Barre area. The beer selection is deep and the menu is great
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Food is a little pricey (especially post-Covid), but it's worth it for quality and generous portions. I do miss the brisket Ruben, but the sugar shack mac fills the hole in my heart. Great local beers on tap, great for family dining, great staff. I guess Cornerstone is just great.

Andrew B.

Yelp
Great food, consistency, friendly staff, very helpful and accommodating. Perfect menu

Yelp
Saturday night and I was rewarded yet again with a delightful companion for dinner, but the real star was the food! Emily, our server, started us off with a great smile and in depth knowledge of what was available on draft. She promptly brought me some water (designated driver) and Russ his choice of a VT cream ale. The atmosphere in the pub is perfect - humming with music, conversation and glasses clinking. But back to the food. I had a terrific Caesar salad AND Sugar Shack Mac 'n Cheese. The mac & cheese had VT cheddar, maple syrup and crispy bacon bits. Oh my goodness - I was in gastronomic heaven! Russ had locavoire burger medium rare with VT cheddar - he also totally pleased!! Stop in for food, for beer, for people watching! You cannot go wrong at Cornerstone.

Yelp
So nice, we ate there twice... in our two night trip to Barre. My boyfriend and I were in town for a long weekend, and our B&B host suggested the Cornerstone as one of two recommended dining spots. After looking online at the extensive and impressive craft beer lineup, there was no question where we'd be headed. It's a popular place on a Friday night, as we learned on our 6 p.m. arrival. The 15 minute wait was well spent at the bar, where we enjoyed Founders KBS. Once we were seated, we enjoyed the lobster mac & cheese -- creamy, with ample lobster and a nice scallion garnish for variety. The serving was generous, but we also found room to split a tasty Dutch apple pie a la mode for dessert. All in all, a great meal! The following day, we arrived early and were seated promptly. My pub burger was perfectly cooked (and Cabot cheese -- yum!), and I enjoyed the ample serving of onion rings I got instead of fries. My boyfriend also liked his teriyaki marinated steak tips. Service was friendly, attentive and accurate during both visits, adding to our enjoyment of the Cornerstone experience. We're looking forward to returning on our next visit to Barre.

Yelp
My family always enjoys the burgers here! I recommend the specialty fries with Parmesan. Soo delicious. They have great burger deals on Tuesday!

Yelp
Serving sizes are big. Food is very good!!! Waiter great with us. Rib eye good. Ban Mi burger good. Pork was good. Friendly and nice waiter ........ no complaints. Plenty left to take home for later. TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Yelp
We were traveling through Vermont on vacation and stumbled uptown this great pub! We ordered a variety of dishes, the shrimp cocktail, pot stickers, wedge salad and the beet salad. Everything was delicious! Not sure I can name a favorite!
google avatar

Booze B.

Yelp
Seems like one of the only options around here. Restaurant is large and located on the corner.. Lots of beer options and several tasty looking lunch specials. They were able to accomodate adding grilled chicken to my salad which was yummy with frwsh beets. Although it could have had a bit more local goat cheese throughout. Decent find.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
This place was so good we ate here twice in one day! It's on the corner and looks deceptively small, but once inside the place is large. Two separate dining rooms, one with the bar. It's Decorated nicely and has a well appointed bar. Good wine and beer list and specials at lunch and dinner. Try a beer flight. For lunch I had a mozzarella tomato panini and the soup of the day, carrot ginger. They were both perfect, the soup being outstanding! For dinner I had the BBQ braised pork shanks with greens and the jalapeño Mac and cheese. Oh my god it was good. It was a huge serving that could have been shared by two. It didn't help that we also ordered the onion rings and the truffle fries as an appetizer!! I was stuffed. Great service also is the reason this place deserves a five star rating.

Yelp
Barre is a community steeped in history. Like many downtowns, the onslaught of "big box" retailers and vanishing industrial jobs have posed challenges. That's why it is so nice, as a Barre native, to see establishments like Cornerstone opening. Every seat was full during our stay. The food was very good and boasts culinary touches unlike anything Barre has ever seen. With advanced notice, Chef Jesse LeClair gladly prepared me a vegan dish (bok choy and quinoa ravioli with tomato soy broth). I appreciated his creativity, as many other places would have given me pasta and a simple salad - traditional veg fallbacks. My appetizer was the roasted beet salad - darn tasty dressing! - minus the cheese. My mother had the pot roast flatbread and my wife ate French onion soup and beer can chicken. Both were delicious. Food presentation was modern by Barre standards. Portions were generous. Prices were also reasonable considering the quality of food. Ambience and decor are wonderful. The owners rehabbed a prominent property alongside City Hall Park and the Aldrich Public Library. My wife and I live and dine frequently in metro Boston; Cornerstone exudes just the right amount of big city sophistication while paying homage to Barre's blue collar heritage. Service was very attentive. We waited only a few minutes for our table, and the servers regularly checked back for drink refills (big pet peeve!). The co-owner and chef also made it a point to visit tables. Classy touch indeed. We enjoyed seeing several old friends, both who worked there or were dining in. We will definitely visit again when home. Cornerstone is a wonderful centerpiece for Barre's recently rebuilt downtown (think: Big Dig lite) and will undoubtedly attract those of us who crave a slightly upscale but unpretentious "go to" spot. I wish the team every success and hope this is a sign of things to come in the Granite City!

Yelp
I just had the Curry Chicken Pita for lunch! I highly recommend this sandwich. Great flavors and the Tzatziki sauce brings it all together. Great job Cornerstone Pub & Kitchen!

Yelp
I am so glad that we chose this place as we passed through Barre on our way to NH. The food we ordered was amazing. We started with the pot stickers and stayed with the pub menu. We shared carne asada tacos and the Southwest chicken sandwich. It was all delicious and fresh. Service was fantastic too. For specialty brew folks, the selection was plentiful. We just went for the $2.50 PBR's. I highly recommend this place!

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Came for the poutine...came BACK for the poutine! This was on our list on our trip to Vermont because of the images of the poutine - we're both gravy lovers, and this place loads it on. It's the only place on our trip that we ended up going to twice. It ended up being on our way home, so we decided to make a stop before we left. Funnily enough, we ended up with the same server both times - she was fantastic, so lucky us!
