Coronado Greenlights New Golf Course Restaurant and Bar | Eater San Diego

"Plans are moving forward to replace the longtime restaurant at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course: an RFP was issued last fall because the current concessionaire’s 30-year contract ends this August, and a special committee (which included Councilmember Whitney Benzian) reviewed three finalist proposals. Runners-up included a proposal from the course’s golf pro and a collaboration between Ken Irvine and the Cohn Restaurant Group (who together run Sea180 in Imperial Beach). Following the committee recommendation of Feast & Fareway and pending further negotiations and a final vote, the new operator and a remodel are expected to be in place by August." - Candice Woo

Google
Beautiful course with good green conditions, and not too challenging with minimal hazards. Very forgiving course and well kept conditions. The one downside is that this course accepts fivesomes. My group was stuck behind a group of five and we had to wait for a while for them on most holes. Wished that they capped it at 4 players like the other courses. We finished at 4.5 hours which wasn’t the worst. Nice views of the water and cityscape. Would play again if I visited again and would recommend.

Google
I went to the golf course for a large work event and really enjoyed playing the course. The greens weren’t excellent condition. The weather was perfect, it was not too hot or too cold. The staff was friendly. The golf carts were well-maintained. I can’t wait to go back again.

Kyle

Google
Fun track. Wide open throughout, not many holes where penalties are a concern. Greens were exceptional for the price, fairways and tee boxes were largely in good shape as well. Has a driving range. Some really nice views of the water. Saw the beverage cart frequently and the food options at the clubhouse were great. Overall a really strong value course. Knocking one star for pace of play alone, took us nearly 6 hours on a Friday afternoon.

Google
Beautiful course and amazing staff. I left my range finder on the cart and was lucky enough to realize it the day of my flight out of San Diego 5 days later. They had it waiting for me and I was able to grab it just before heading to the airport. If you're in the area this course is definitely worth a visit.

Ryan K.

Google
Beautiful course. Great value. Its hard to believe that this course is public. Open fairways and forgiving tees. You play here to enjoy the view. The only challenge is getting the tee time. This is a course to play if you stay in San Diego

Chris W.

Google
Absolutely beautiful course. One of my favorite public courses in San Diego. Reasonably priced to golf multiple holes along the water with great views of the massive Coronado Bay Bridge, as well as the downtown San Diego skyline.

Joe C.

Google
Had an amazing experience golfing with customers. Customer service was great, and overall, it was worth the outing

Erica L.

Google
Nice course, in good shape. All flat with open fairways. Very forgiving course. You won’t lose balls here but will have a great view!

Yelp
Played on a Monday - they were able to squeeze me in when I called the day before. Very nice and very affordable municipal course right on Coronado Island. The course is about a 20 minute walk from the Del or a five minute Uber. Club rentals available, driving range, chipping green, putting green. The course isn't hard, but there is definitely water that comes into play. If you slice you can certainly end up wet...or in the street on a couple holes. Greens were aerated when I played (a little annoying), but otherwise the course was in great shape. I would 100% play here again.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Course is fun and well maintained for the amount of play it gets. No complaints here. But here's a warning do not order the fish and chips. They should be embarrassed for sending them out.
google avatar

Arya S.

Yelp
Amazing views and the cost for brunch is affordable. Food is ok and plenty of parking available. Come on a sunny day and sit outside and have a mimosa. Such a wonderful time.

Patrick H.

Yelp
Amazing course, great layout, forgiving, spectacular views. Fun play and I'd say medium difficulty. Practice facilities (range, greens, bunker) are nice.. not the best ever but absolutely effective and clean. Pro shop is good, staff was nice! The VALUE was incredible. Can't beat it for $80-100 Will 100% be back
google avatar

Yelp
This is my third visit to this course in a few years, and I'm still blown away by its beauty. Everything went smoothly, and the course conditions were exceptional. I'll definitely be writing an excellent review - the value here is top-notch. Kudos to the team for maintaining such a wonderful facility. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
This place is amazing! Gorgeous views, nice layout and excellent staff. Only drawback is all the hacks on here. There should be a minimum handicap for people allowed to play on a golf course...Pace was so slow it all but ruined the round. I shot well playing to the higher part of my handicap spectrum but there is no way to get into pace with the slow lane golfers who thing they are pga but carry 20+ hdcp. My hdcp is 10.2 and I get up and rip and spend less than a minute lookin over a putt if that. Marshall's need to do a better job of policing slow play and shitty players going to improve flow. It will still get a 5 star but if there was a 4.5 it would have received it for slow play...Coronado is by the way one of the busiest courses in America. San Diego is blessed to have it!

Yelp
On Father's Day I was parked on Glorietta Boulevard and Bam my windshield was broken by a golf ball. I reported it to the golf course and they questioned a golfer who denied it. And nothing has been done to help me! I feel this does not make the community golf course look community supportive. I've called and called after filling out the incident report and have not even had a response.

Yelp
This municipal golf course is five star! The scenery is beautiful and well kept. The views of the bridge and the bay are stellar and the grill puts out excellent food! Servers are friendly and efficient as is the bar staff. We love driving over for a staycation feel and there are absolutely no homeless in Coronado!!!

Yelp
We went as a foursome for my birthday today, wish it was better but faced some weird interactions with the Marshall. We had a group of 3 ahead of us who were far better than we are. They were playing fast and were ahead by a hole and a half of us(depending on the distance). The group behind us was still a hole and a half behind us. So in no way were we disrupting the pace of play for people behind us. The Marshall drove by and told us to pick up the pace and then left quickly. We didn't question it and hurried through the next hole. We looked back and saw the group behind us now being 2.5 holes behind. The Marshall came back and said it again. I asked him if there were complaints about us holding up the group behind us and he said no, but he had to mention it since the group ahead is that much faster. After he left, we looked at the pace of play time located on the score card and found we were ahead of the target time. I understood pace of play is important but some groups truly will play faster. That's why if they are behind you, you let them play through as a curtesy. In this case we played majority of the back 9 without many people in site. By the time we finished the last hole, the group behind must have been 3 holes back. Overall time from start to finish was 4 hours, 30 minutes ahead of the target time. It really ruins the enjoyment of a relaxing golf day when the Marshall harasses you to speed up with no one close behind you. The course has a great view at least.

Yelp
Clubhouse staff was super un-friendly Starter was rude Food took forever at the turn and was terrible Course was OK, but for $108 - I'd expect a lot more. My friends and I definitely don't look like your typical Coronado golf goer... and the staff definitely made me feel like I didn't belong.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Course was in good shape. Problem is with marshall and drunk and high golfers. My wife and I got there early and starter asked us if we were ready to go. We said yes and he put us on the 1st tee. So we got out as a twosome. After 55 years of golfing I understand pace of play and at 71 I know my distance isn't what it used to be. Evidently, the older stoners in front of us didn't get that memo, waiting until the group ahead was a good 300 out, really? I play to a 4 and these guys were in serious need of lessons and counseling. They jumped the group ahead of them and now we're stuck behind a drunk with the same masculinity issues. Called for marshall and he blamed us for being a twosome. His starter let us out! Anyway, he refused to talk to either party saying he didn't want to start anything even after he acknowledged that both groups were either high or drunk. People, the colored tees are there for a reason. Play to your handicap! Play sober and enjoy the game for the game itself. Management needs to get a handle on Marshalls and institute a handicap rating for tees played. Nice course though!
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Beautiful views, friendly staff (especially the starters) reasonable pricing and the restaurant/bar has a lot to offer. I feel like it's a private club the way certain staff members treat us. Like, Bob the bartender, Angeline the server /cart girl, Bella, also a cart girl. There's Tommy in the pro shop and let's not forget Jimmy and Big Al serving as the starter. This course is worthy of 5 stars because of the outstanding people like these.

Chase R.

Yelp
I love this course but the younger starter who answers starter calls is an asshole. Every time I call it's like a burden for him to respond. Find a different job fella. No one cares about how mad you are. Do your job and book my tee time with a smile and thank you. I challenge management to call in during his shift and hang up the phone and try not to feel like you were a burden to him and Coronado GC. You can do better and you should!
google avatar

Shelly N.

Yelp
Needs new management very poorly run. Greens are in horrible shape. The whole course looks like a clean up project.

Sammy S.

Yelp
A Muni Gem! Proshop guys were great...tight course but borders the ocean for $ 61 bucks! Great deal...wrapped it up with an IPA and a really well cooked burger afterwards. 5 stars!
google avatar

Brittney M.

Yelp
Worst experience I've ever had at a course after golfing for years. The starter is extremely rude and embodies the definition of misogyny. Every other staff member we encountered was extremely rude besides the guys in the ProShop. Beautiful place, horrible people. I would strongly advise women, or anyone, to avoid this course if they want to be treated with respect.
google avatar

Yelp
Easily one of the coolest public courses in San Diego. It's not difficult, but it's not easy either which makes it good for advance and golfers like me. Lol. The staff is always spot on with their customer service and the courses always in good shape. There are a few holes on the front and back nine that you do get to play right along the water which is awesome. Due to the popularity of this course, sometimes it gets backed up. Although, you can say that about almost every golf course depending on the day , and who is taking way too long to look for their golf balls. If you do want to play, call out in advance because tee times can be difficult. Great course. Give it a shot!

Yelp
Coronado Municipal Golf Course is scenic course located right at the foot of the iconic Coronado bridge. Opened in 1957, it is rated as one of the best public golf courses in the nation. Getting a tee time can be a challenge as it is a very popular course with the Coronado residents who play here. Due to popularity, Coronado Golf Course does charge advances fees of $1.50 for 0-1 days booking or $18 for 3-14 days booking. If you plan to play here book well in advance to secure a tee time as they do go fast. You will need at least 4-6 to play the entire course. They run a tight ship at Coronado with course marshals making sure pace of play is on time to avoid back ups. It was also nice to see the beverage cart making multiple rounds making sure golfers are well hydrated. It is an excellent walking course for those who like to get their steps in. I got in about 6.3 miles and I was pretty tired after the round. Overall it was a very scenic round with view of the Hotel Del Coronado on the back and the Coronado Bay Bridge in the front. The green are well kept and fairways are wide. Fun fact: They allow fivesomes but all players must be riding in a golf cart, no walking.

Zoey N.

Yelp
The service in the restaurant is phenomenal! Great aroma, and pleasant servers. Felt extremely welcomed and understood here. Sergio working the bar was a blast!
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
Love this golf course! How about the setting, Coronado Bridge, water, the ferry etc.... The grill has good food, and their drinks are tasty too! We have played golf here, and we have come just for lunch. Give it a try, I bet you will like it
google avatar

Genevieve K.

Yelp
Relaxing indoor and outdoor dining over looking the Coronado golf course and bridge. They serve a full breakfast, eggs Benedict, avocado toast and pancakes. The outdoor area is dog friendly.

Scott R.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience yesterday: was fortunate to arrive at noon and get out at 12:22 PM with two other singles, who were both very good golfers. Pace of play was a smidge slow which was to be expected. Fun & scenic layout, and excellent course conditions especially the greens. Highly recommended!

Jack S.

Yelp
Played Coronado a couple of months ago. I enjoyed in the past the staff and guests of the golf course. Unfortunately this last time the Head golf professional was very rude. My time playing was ruined. I will not be returning to play in the future. My suggestion is to play somewhere else. San Diego has plenty of golf courses to play. Do yourself a favor and play another course.

Tim S.

Yelp
buddy at the desk in the shop overpriced a bucket of rangeballs by like 8 bucks fire him immediately

Jake S.

Yelp
Fantastic condition for a $55 muni. Very impressed by the greens and condition of the fairways
google avatar

Deron R.

Yelp
This is a great municipal course right on San Diego Bay. You cannot be the views from many of the holes, there is sailboats, yachts and warships all around this golf course on the harbor. Not a lot of trouble to get into but of course you'll find it! They also have a nice restaurant on site that has a good brunch. Definitely worth the time to have lunch there. Beware though, if you tee off late it's going to be a long round so try to get as early a tee time as you can.

Jay V.

Yelp
This golf course is well manicured and in amazing condition. I would recommend playing here if I was local. My buddies and I flew out to San Diego for a golf trip. This experience at this golf course was one like no other. The course is extremely packed. Feels like tee times are 2-3 mins apart. We were playing a fast consistent pace to the point where we were waiting for every shot, the Marshall drives up to us and states, "don't let the group get ahead of you." We were waiting on a par 3 to tee off obviously you can't tee off on a 135 yard par 3 while there's a group in front. Then the Marshall drives away as if we were the only group waiting. They run this course like a factory, definitely not a typical golf course. I would not recommend this course to anyone looking for a relaxing round of golf.
google avatar

Gino R.

Yelp
Fun layout. Enjoyed the course and it's really well manicured. BUT...I had no idea everyone in San Diego clearly have nothing else to do with their day because they all walk. You have groups and groups of people hitting maybe 180 yd with their drivers and they're all walking. Five to six hour round from what I understand is the norm. If you don't mind hit and wait, hit and wait, and you have the patience of a saint, you'll enjoy this course. Bring a bunch of practice balls too, the guy we got paired with ( a local who of course was walking) had a bag of range balls and the 17th runs along the bay and while we waited again to tee off, we smashed a few out in to the bay. Very scenic hole. I'd definitely recommend playing this course at least once, I'd actually play it again. What I won't do though is set timers to make sure I can try and win a tee time spot. They grab these tee times up quick. You have to be logged in and ready to start clicking for spots as soon as they release the tee times. In my opinion it's not worth all that. Also the club house is loaded with plenty of souvenir merch, especially if your from out of town. All that being said, for the price, if you can get a tee time, it's a steal of a deal.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Kinda magic. At least my round. Great views. Conditions of greens were above par. The tee boxes not as much, but the staff and location made it a 4 star.
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
I would've given this golf course a 5 star rating if it had better signs and directions. Even with the map on the screen it was sometimes hard to head to the next hole. Regardless, the location is absolutely beautiful and everyone from the staff was very kind and helpful. Will definitely return for some tee time and hopefully this time around is easier to get by.

Haley R.

Yelp
not welcoming to beginners. I'm fairly new to golf and was very discouraged, disheartened and offput when a sexist, degrading marshal told me at hole one today that i had to participate as a rider in my marshal so as not to slow game pace - all because i took a few practice swings. he rode by twice in the span of 2 minutes to talk about me to my group (as if i wasn't in front of him) about how "this is a nice place" and i belonged at the driving range because i was a risk of slowing the pace and taking practice swings wasn't allowed. even though for 9 holes we were stuck waiting for the group of FIVE ahead of us, and this marshal was nowhere to be found. definitely won't be coming back here and will likely not continue pursuing golf because of this experience. really affirmed all the stereotypes you hear about golf being entitled, elitist and for "boys only." only good news is i was able to get a refund for not playing.
google avatar

Maximilian B.

Yelp
Course was well groomed and scenery great. The only issue was the rather large fake blonde in the pro shop that was sarcastic and rude. Recommend the Golf Pro to fire.
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
So I came with a group of 7 (my first time golfing) and the service sucked. Arrived around 2:30 and waited over 30 mins for the rental clubs to arrive. I went inside and asked for them (twice) and they said they'd be right out. Both times. Third time I went and asked, they did ally realized they had messed up my order ever though I had shown them my receipt both times I asked. He said he thought I was part of another group and that's why he got mixed up. He looked at my recipe BOTH times so am not sure how he tot confused. So far, not enjoying the experience. Other groups came and went. Finally cancelled my order. Decided to just hang out at the bar. Garbage.
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
Terrible customer service have tried to get Tee time been told 5 different things. Rude staff on phone unbelievable!! This is not Torrey Pine..,

Moira G.

Yelp
Food was delicious first time here. We ordered our coffee and food. The waitress never came and asked if we wanted a refill on coffee we had to ask the guy that was bringing the food for coffee. Then we got served it was only my husbands plate we waited about 10min until she came by and asked about my plate then she came again and asked what did I order by then the next two tables got served and I still didn't get my plate. Finally she came by and brought my plate. By the time I finished eating my food one of the tables that sat like 15 min after us left. She asked the other tables if they were doing good if they needed anything. She never came and asked us if we needed anything. Manager came and asked us if everything was good. Husband said food was good and she said and service and he again said food was good. A few minutes later our waitress came by with the bill and said manager took coffee off because of the food. Then she says would you like coffee? After we got the bill. My husband payed the bill and still she got a 15% tip. She never said thank you or have a nice day she just left. Yes we would come back but would request a different server. The other ladies were on it.

Yelp
This is definitely the best "muni" I've ever played. Growing up in SD, I had always heard good things about the course but was never able to get a tee time. I recently visited for Thanksgiving and was adamant that I needed to experience this course, and it did not disappoint. It was in excellent condition, and the location, weather, and greens fees ($65!!!) were nearly unbeatable. The greens were in great shape and rolled true without any bumpiness. The 13th hole is unlike any golf hole I've ever played. I highly recommend playing Coronado the next time you are in San Diego. Definitely get a bloody mary from the bar before you tee off! The only downsides are the challenge of getting a tee time, as this might be the most popular muni in the county and the local residents snatch up the tee times quickly. The pace of play is a little slow, but when you can view the bay, the bridge, and the beach you get over the waiting.
google avatar

Cody M.

Yelp
This rating goes to Tristan, our server in the restaurant. He was very professional and kind. He even asked us our names- the food was delicious, as well.
google avatar

Derek H.

Yelp
Great course and great time! Food and cocktails were on point as well. Friendly staff and great atmosphere!
google avatar

Skip B.

Yelp
Online tee times are complicated. Pro shop hardly answers their phone and when they do, they're rude and disrespectful. Course is nice and easy to play, but the service.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
I would love to give this course a 5 star but after the troubling event that happened on the 14th tee box I can't. I was excited to finally play here and the fellas and I booked back to back tee times and ate lunch prior at the great course restaurant after our drive from LA. Conditions and weather were great. The course was quickly climbing my list of top courses in so cal. We met the young and energetic cart girl on the 5th and got plenty of refreshments. When we reached the 14th we were excited to see her cart between the tee box and bathroom so we could refill for the championship holes. Things went south when we noticed the cart was unattended and her purse and phone were just laying on the seat. That's when the bathroom door opened and Cart girl came out high as a kite and nodded out on the grass. The junkie she had met at the bathroom scampered away and She laid there in her drugged stuper. Staff was there moments later and called medics who then called police. The cart girl was then cleared by medics and hauled off to jail. What a site to see after almost finishing a great day. The scores suffered after that. I hope she finds her way and Coronado Golf makes sure this doesn't happen to another 8 guys trying to enjoy a road trip.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
Overall the course is in good shape. It's a pretty fun course for a flatter course. We usually play hilly/mountain/canyon courses. Visual elements include custom homes of various architecture (Spanish, mission craftsman, modern etc.). The carts have navi which is always a plus. There are a lot of dog legs which isn't my favorite. The ocean breezes are pleasant in the summer months for sure. Pretty much would you would expect from a muni course.
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
This course has a lot of wide open space. A great place to practice your long drives. The views are spectacular.

J H.

Yelp
Like the course, but hard to get a tee time. So, I use the range when visiting. However. For all of the use it gets, the range is in terrible condition. Poorly upkept mats, dingy range balls, and poor landing turf. This range is a cash cow the management drains from, without regard for the paying customers it serves. It needs to be cleaned up and properly managed!
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Went to SD for business. I tried to play at Torry Pines but they wouldn't even answer the phone. I called here and they squeezed me in. Great course. Great people. Good greens. I had fun!
google avatar

Vivath O.

Yelp
Nice pleasant solidly maintained course. You get a nice view of the ocean and bridge on several of the holes. Tee times are well spaced. Currently (1/2023) twilight is 1pm, which is plenty of time for 9 holes before it's too dark.

Yelp
Let's break this down into the good and the bad. (Being in Coronado, there is no ugly.) The good: Coronado is a very pretty course and a great course to walk. Right on the bay, on any given round, you might see anything from an osprey catch a fish out of the water or a team of Navy Seals hanging off of a rope ladder daggling from a helicopter. At the very least, you will have a very pretty bay and bridge views and some lovely sailboats gliding by. Particularly for how much play it gets, Coronado is usually in fantastic condition for a municipal course, with reasonably fast and smooth greens and very well-kept fairways and traps. Also, because the course is built on a sandy base, it drains extremely, making it a great choice for post-rain rounds of golf. The layout is not exactly hard, but it's challenging enough to hold your attention. Also, the kikuyu grass makes it play longer than it's 6,590 yards, as you will not get much roll out there. Links style golf it most definitely is not. The bad: It can be slow. Very slow. I'm not sure why, as it's not very long, and the rough is short, but I have never had a quick round out there. The other day I was the fifth or sixth group out in the morning, and it still took over 4:15. It is also one of those courses for which a 4:15 round feels much slower than it actually is. The other major drawback is the tee time system, which is essentially rigged to favor the Coronado locals. Aside from paying a $18 advanced booking fee, you pretty much have to show up before the crack of dawn two days before the day you want to play to get a good tee time. You can try getting one over the phone, but that is definitely a crap shoot. While most every other course has an online booking system, Coronado seems to want to make sure that locals have the advantage. While this can be great for those who live on Coronado, it's not so much for outsiders. In spite of all this, Coronado is definitely worth a visit, as it is a great muni, with pretty views, and is a nice walk, albeit but not without its drawbacks. You would be hard pressed to find many better munis.

Yelp
We just hosted a 20 player tournament there on Friday. I can't say enough about how well Organized this facility is! Tim communicated well in the planning... and had carts and range balls all waiting for our group! Started on time, friendly food and Bev staff in their temporary facilities... box lunches were nicer then expected! The ambassador on course was super helpful and fun. We've played courses all over San Diego the last 2 months while traveling and given ALL the rain... conditions were A+.... yes, it was 5 hours but Tim even ordered up sunshine for the whole day!!!

J J.

Yelp
We give the location, view and vibe a 5 star rating. We give the breakfast a 4 star rating. The food was good but not amazing in regards to the flavor. The service was a 3.5 star rating. Our server didn't seem to care much about our table. We're being generous with the 3.5. We will give it another try and see if it improves.

Warrior P.

Yelp
Played here 10/20/22. Very affordable. One of the few courses that doesn't charge extra/price gouge non-locals. Course is fun and playable for all skill levels. Course is well maintained. Course restrooms are strategically located and clean. No kikuyu on fairways, a plus. It is, however, in the rough. Ball gets good roll. Fairways and greens are in good shape. Greens are smooth, consistent, puttable. Greens will hold the ball on approach shots. Course is very pretty. Great views of the bridge, marina, bay, the neighborhood. We played in 4 hours 20 min. and kept up w/ the group ahead w/ no problem. Pro shop staff were courteous. The pro shop has a great selection of shirts for men. Minimal selection for women, and only if the woman happens to be size small. Great selection of golf towels, ball markers, hats, bags, some shoes. Had late lunch at Feast and Fareway. There is indoor and outdoor dining. Outdoor dining is a pretty covered patio area w/ views of 18 green and the bay. Ordered fish tacos and cheeseburger. Food arrived hot. Food was attractively plated, fresh, and tasty. Fries were fresh and crispy. The kitchen knows how to cook a burger well done and still be juicy. Service was courteous and timely. Will definitely visit again.
