Yelp
Coronato Pizza is the best pizza we've had in the Triangle yet. We loved this place. Not only was the food outstanding, but the service was as well. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for good pizza in the Triangle and, more specifically, the Carrboro-Chapel Hill area.
Coronato opened in August 2019 in the still relatively-new South Green retail development in Carrboro, not far from downtown Chapel Hill. This is a casual, modern pizzeria and bar. It has a two-story dining room inside and mostly uncovered patio seating outside. It's not a huge place, but I think it's spacious enough.
During our Friday dinner visit, the restaurant was comfortably busy with a steady stream of both dine-in and takeout customers. There was plenty of free parking in the smoothly-paved lot right in front of the restaurant. We sat on the patio and it was a fun, pleasant experience.
My wife found Coronato on Yelp. It was highly-rated and the pictures of the food looked good. Here's what we got:
Cocktails:
* Bellini ($6) - peach puree, prosecco
* Aperol Spritz ($5) - Aperol, prosecco, soda
Salads and Snacks:
* Burrata ($16) - fresh Italian burrata, Vera Luce Farm organic tomatoes, Taggiasca olives, traditional basil pesto, sea salt, "really good" extra virgin olive oil
Pizza:
* Funghi Pizza ($18) - roasted onions and mushrooms, fresh mozzarella and Taleggio cheese, torn parsley, lemon and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
* Sbagliata Pizza ($16) - mixed-up "Classica" with raw crushed tomato sauce, fresh basil, smoked mozzarella and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
* Potato Pizza ($16) - slow-roasted potato and garlic base with preserved lemon, Fontina, fresh mozzarella, Parmigiana, and rosemary
From the cocktails to the pizzas, everything was great. There wasn't anything we were even slightly disappointed in. If I had to find something to nitpick, it would be the presentation of the Bellini. A Bellini is normally served in a champagne flute, but ours was served in a glass. While the presentation was underwhelming, the drink itself tasted wonderfully peachy with a satisfying fizz. Unlike the Bellini, the Aperol Spritz looked amazing. Both drinks utilized reusable gold straws. The Aperol Spritz had crushed ice and a ripe orange slice. This was another fruity, sparkling cocktail that was cold, refreshing, and not too sweet.
As someone who loves burrata and orders it often, I thought Coronato's Burrata was excellent. It was fresh and high quality. Vera Luce Farm, where the tomatoes came from, is located in nearby Hillsborough. The farm specializes in Italian and Southern European vegetables. Pretty cool. The tomatoes tasted super fresh. My wife still thinks about how sweet and tender the tomatoes were. For as much burrata as I've eaten, I think this was my first time having it with pesto. The pesto was placed beneath the burrata. They worked really well together. In short, this dish was magical.
Of the three pizzas we tried, our favorite was the Funghi (white pizza). For me, the Funghi was followed by the Sbagliata and then the Potato. My wife liked the Sbagliata (red pizza) and Potato (white) pizzas equally. At the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these. We both love mushrooms so the Funghi was a natural choice for us. The pizza was incredibly delectable, especially with all the umami from the mushrooms. All of the pizzas were thin crust, Neapolitan style. The dough was chewy and scrumptious with the outer edges charred and crispy.
The Sbagliata is a "mixed-up" version of Coronato's take on the classic Margherita pizza. The thing that made it different was the smoked mozzarella, the smoky flavor of which was very evident and unique. It had an extra depth of flavor compared to regular fresh mozzarella. As for the Potato Pizza, it was a recommendation from our sweet server Ava E. The potatoes added a creaminess to the pizza, the zesty lemon flavor was noticeable and enjoyable, and the rosemary added a terrific herby taste.
In all, Coronato had 12 pizzas on the menu, one size only at 11 inches in diameter, priced at $12-18 each. They also had five Roman pan pizzas (most $26 or $28 each) along with over a dozen interesting Italian apps/sides like Mozzarella Fritti (fried mozzarella, $5) and tomato-braised Eggplant Meatballs ($12). They had a decent wine list plus beer, cider, and cocktails.
Service was fantastic. Ava was our primary server. She had a really upbeat, positive attitude that elevated our dining experience. We were also seen by two other staff members who were cool and friendly as well. Everything we ordered came out in a reasonable amount of time.
Inside, there were two all-gender restrooms in the back. The one I used was clean.
"Coronato" is Italian for crown.
