A Guide to the Best and Worst Vegan Ice Creams | Eater

"The Madagascan Vanilla Bean made with coconut milk offers a silky texture and good melt but is innocuously bland and leans more toward coconut flavor than true vanilla, making it a safe, nonconfrontational option for someone who just wants something cold and melty." - Rebecca Flint Marx

The Best Ice Cream Shops in Portland, Oregon - Eater Portland

"Hailing from Eugene, Oregon, Cosmic Bliss opened its first scoop shop in the Pearl District last year. The company rose to prominence with its coconut-based dairy-free ice creams under the name Coconut Bliss, but in recent years, has rebranded and now includes dairy ice cream in its lineup. Dairy and dairy-free options can be found at the scoop shop, in flavors like hazelnut fudge crunch and legendary cookie dough. Cosmic Bliss serves its ice cream in scoops, shakes, ice cream sandwiches, or waffle cone tacos, and finishes it with toppings such as crystalized ginger or Hu Gems." - Michelle Lopez, Janey Wong

My youngest son requested a trip to bliss for a treat (he'd been here before) and my first visit was EPIC. Not trying to hype up your expectations but if you're cane sugar free, dairy free, gluten free you won't find this experience elsewhere. The service was great. Personable and engaging, they happily let us try samples and made recommendations, also letting me know I could do 2 half scoops instead of a full. What a blast! The waffle cone was perfect! Chocolate peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie dough are both on point. My son got the blueberry pie shake. Can't wait to come back! Not cheap, but worth the experience.

Google
Plant based ice cream was so good! Chose the strawberry swirl as it’s fruity and in season, to cool off today. Sprinkles gave a nice crunch (free topping!), and the whole thing wasn’t too sweet! I could taste the bits of strawberry inside. Vibe of the place is great and the ice creams were great as a family just searching for a quick place to cool off at around 6pm. Also got to try some samples, staff were very kind, and the ice cream wasn’t too sweet (lunar latte was quite strong on coffee which we all appreciated).

Google
The ice cream was decent, but the service was unfriendly and standoffish. I went in for a sweet treat after dinner and although nice at first, it was very off-putting that the staff seemed very over it and then wouldn’t hand me ice cream or begin making a milkshake until after I paid. I understand wanting to make sure I pay, but it felt like a bit much and didn’t feel like the most welcoming experience. I felt so weird about it after leaving. The vibe was so off-putting that I didn’t want to stay there and eat my ice cream. Overall, for being an ice cream lover, I’d recommend Salt & Straw over this. There is a much more comforting experience for you there.

Google
GF and DF available!!! We walked in at the perfect time on a Friday night... no one in line, but in no time, there was quite a line of people. We ended up ordering two, two scoop cups (they do have GF waffle cones!!) All of our scoops were plant-based. Sea salt Caramel Chocolate (yes!!), Chocolate Peanut Butter (delicious, best pick of the night), Celestial Cappuccino (really good, wish it had a bit more coffee flavor), Madagascan Vanilla Bean (good, heavy coconut flavor). So glad we stopped. We'll be back!

Google
This dark chocolate cosmic bliss ice cream is out of this world yummy. It’s has just the right amount of chocolate to milk ratio. Not too dark but not too milky. You can taste the real vanilla. It’s yummy too. Very rich and creamy. Just perfectly delicious.

Google
A really nice ice cream spot in downtown Portland. I loved the interior space. The ice cream was nice and flavorful with a range of options for people with different allergies / preferences.

Google
Pretty run-of-the-mill, which was disappointing. I expected a lot more exciting flavors from Portland, I guess I would say. My husband (who is lactose intolerant) was thrilled to see all the plant-based options.

Google
I came to Cosmic bliss for a quick post dinner dessert with friends and was pleasantly surprised. Immediately after walking in, the ambience and decor stood out to me. It seemed like an upscale coffee shop turned into an ice cream parlour period the decorations and furniture was very well picked. The vibe was great for a chill time. The service from the workers was fantastic, they were able to accommodate any dietary restrictions and answer questions about the flavours. In regard to the ice cream itself, they were a plethora of options, including vegan and gluten-free. The portion sizes were very reasonable, especially in regards to the price. I ordered the chocolate cookie dough ice cream, and while it was a good tasting ice cream, it was not something extraordinary. To me, it was a good solid basic ice cream. Not overly creamy or flavourful. Overall, I think, Cosmic Bliss is a fantastic place to get a quick ice cream with many different options, including milkshakes and drinks. The vibe is great for a nice hangout spot with friends and I would certainly recommend this to others.

Yelp
Great gluten and dairy free vegan ice cream. So creamy coconut based and organic. They also have dairy but everything is gluten-free! It was only $7.50 for a double scoop. Staff is super friendly. Comfy seating. Big windows. A great hangout.

Yelp
-street parking -has both dairy & nondairy - the cookie sandwich was plant based & it's a great alternative for dairy but i did not like the taste lol - milkshake with dairy ice cream?... bomb haha -service super helpful and friendly and a nice place to hang out with groups

Yelp
I am surprised at all of the 5 star reviews, maybe it's just me, I'm kinda stingy when handing them out. Cosmic Bliss is a solid bang for your buck and a good solid choice as far as service and quality. The reason I can't give them 5 stars is because I found that the tastes aren't quite as amazing. They just miss for me - a little too sweet or a little to bland. There also seems to be a disconnect about toppings which are mentioned in several places on the website and even on the app reward program, but they seem to be missing in real life. There were two options that were offered on the fresh made waffle cones, but none were available to add to a scoop of ice cream in a bowl. I recommend you try it for yourself, keeping your expectations in check.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream that is incredibly sweet! My husband and I shared one shake (Chocolate Yes Please) and we couldn't finish it because it was too sweet, despite being made with dark chocolate ice cream. We love that this place offers plant based ice cream options! We don't have many of these where we live. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Portland!

Yelp
Cosmic Bliss, it's the best ice cream - why I scream, you scream, and we all scream for Cosmic Bliss ice cream! Why scream for Cosmic Bliss - hey, cows are happy - and healthy - grazing on grass. Happy healthy cows produce better milk to make healthier better ice cream. It's organic, so don't panic! Cold and creamy. I 'm having 2 scoops - chocolate euphoria and peanut butter blitz - my fav! Grass fed cows are not shot-up with drugs and antibiotics like cows in a confined feedlots that can not move about and eat grass - hey, they become sickly. Sadly that's most ice cream brands. Support Cosmic Bliss because it's organic and tastes great. Farmers use humane and ethical practices caring for cows. Support it because it comes from our precious few fair trade, smaller dairy farmers. Small businesses like farmers are part of backbone of American Enterprise. Oh, if you are lactose intolerant, you can get an ice cream fix that is plant based coconut milk. Yum yum! I tasted it - delish. Enjoy! Nice big open ice cream parlor. Comfy places with big cushions to kick back. Games to play. Service with a smile one scoop at a time.

Yelp
Wow. Blissy. I enjoyed my flavors and the ambiance, despite the fact that it looks like every other ice cream store.

Yelp
I stopped by Cosmic Bliss in the Pearl District in Portland after passing by it a few times. Overall, I'd give my experience 8.8/10. Note the plant based ice cream uses coconut as base so all of them have a tint of coconut! - Infinite Coconut: 8.8/10: Coconut on coconut. Not too sweet but refreshing - Strawberry Shortbread: 8.8/10: Good balance of flavour, a hint of coconut flavour that adds more flavour

Yelp
Walked in last night to an empty place and the workers were really friendly. There is a lot of choices for dairy and non dairy flavors. There is also other goodies like a gluten free ice cream sandwich, chocolate taco, shakes etc. I got a small vanilla for my kiddo and my sister and I split the vanilla cookie sandwich. It was very good. My kiddo ate every last morsel of her ice cream. After she was done she was able to play around and dance to the nice music they had playing. It felt very low stress in there. I would 100 percent return for ice cream and other desserts by myself or with friends/family. PS the restaurant smells like heaven
google avatar

Yelp
The ice cream is top notch and the waffle cones and delicious not too hard or too sweet. I came today for the chocolate taco and they were sold out around 2:30 so I recommend heading in earlier in the day to make sure all the ingredients you are craving are still available. Staff was super nice and patient and offered helpful tips/suggestions. The chocolate ice cream is rich and flavorful.

Yelp
Walked in and immediately greeted, staff was friendly and helped us with trying flavors to help us choose. There is plenty of seating inside and includes a water fountain. Family friend environment, would recommend! Definitely lots of flavors to choose from and offers shakes!

Yelp
This place is adorable. It is pricey, but worth it. The employees were cheerful and helpful. I recommend checking it out.

Yelp
Cosmic Bliss's flagship store is a hit! I would return to this place again if in the area. When it comes to ice cream parlors, I'm a fan of simple flavor options, a tidy interior, clean equipment, and helpful employees. Bliss was a trendy shop but still managed to meet all of these criteria. In a city of pretentious fusion shops and overly/improperly seasoned food, it was nice to go somewhere sweet that had relatively basic vegan and non-vegan options. I visited on Jan 31st and snagged some icecream for my girlfriend and I. For her, I ordered one scoop of the Twisted Cookie Dough (grass-fed dairy) and, for myself, one scoop of the Madagascan Vanilla Bean (plant-based; coconut base). I can't remember the total price but I remember it being less than or around $12 for both which when considering location (downtown NW) and style of shop (trendy) isn't terrible. My girlfriend liked her's and I liked mine; although, she said she happened to like my vegan one more than her dairy one. She said the vegan ice cream itself felt more refreshing. We both enjoyed the subtle coconut hint of my scoop and, honestly, we both would probably go all vegan next time. The waffle cone was lightly sweet and had a great thin texture that held up well. The employee that helped me when picking up the ice cream was kind and wore a mask (always nice to see with seasonal respiratory diseases and COVID-19 going around). I informed them that I was a first-timer and they took the time to go through the menu options along with offering samples if I wanted to get a feel for their flavors. Overall, great service, good ice cream. Can't really complain.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this ice cream spot in the pearl for a while. It's a premium location and a fancy space - price and quality reflect that. They have dairy and non dairy options. Got the strawberry specialty shake and it was awesome. It was also 12 bucks. Worth it if you wanna indulge
google avatar

Kamron H.

Yelp
Had the half cookie sandwich dipped in strawberry chocolate. It was pretty great and definitely worth the 4 bucks. Love how they had a cool lounge inside too. Definitely a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Yelp
Great Icecream, and service. Came in to try them out since it was close to dinner, and was greeted with great customer service along with a bunch of samples of their tasty icecream. My GF could not make up her choice after sampling almost the whole menu, but shoutout to the employee working there last night she kept patient especially after my GF just went with vanilla, and pecan at the end . I was surprised that their yelp reviews were so low so wanted to make sure I gave a shoutout of my experience keep it up!

Yelp
Sorry Salt n Staw, this be my new favorite late night ice cream shop! Their prices are very generous as well as their scoops! The selection is wide and accommodating for a lot of people. Even the flavors that are made for vegans and such were killer! The interior design is amazing and grand. It's an eye candy being in there for sure.

Yelp
I am SO glad that non-dairy treats have arrived in central Portland. For so long, Salt and Straw has dominated the dessert scene in the city - but - the non-dairy fans of Cosmic Bliss should be thrilled about this physical location. The staff are extremely kind and will help answer all of your questions, while also curating your shake, cone, scoops, and more. The process from entering the store to ordering can be long depending on the weather and staffing, so be patient and make more room in your bellies for deliciousness. I personally am a fan of the seasonal shakes, with the raspberry and strawberry options particularly enticing. The team will have you try a few flavors before you confirm your intentions, and take their recommendations if they have any. There's plenty of seating inside the air conditioned space that is also well designed and interesting. If you're up for a walk, explore the neighborhood and enjoy your treats while window shopping. There is also a great bench across the street in the shade, too. You know I'll be back! You should return, too! P.S.A. - this establishment focuses on non-dairy options. If you need tons of dairy options, go elsewhere, since you have many options in the city.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream shop with friendly staff and amazing flavors! Definitely a place to check out!

Yelp
Good ice cream with plenty of non dairy options for people who want that. Very friendly staff and casual place to hang out.

Yelp
Very cute ice cream shop. Decor is very bright and colorful. I was so excited at how many vegan ice cream flavors there were!! The sweet cherry amaretto and the coconut flavors were both very good! Not overly sweet. Made with coconut milk. The waffle cones were not overly crumbly - Very easy to eat! We were greeted and helped as soon as we walked in. Very fast service!

Yelp
Showed up at 5:55pm, dark and locked up. Hand written sign said closes at 9pm? ..................

Yelp
Somewhat unique dessert place in The Pearl. The shakes are very sweet and a little pricey but worth trying once. Friendly staff and quick service.
google avatar

Yelp
We all know who you are. The name change didn't fool me. But what did fool me was buying your dark chocolate bliss bars and thinking they were gonna be as big and juicy as they used to be when you only squeezed luscious milky coconuts. Bring back my big bars! p.s. your dairy products suck, bring back my milky coconuts
google avatar

Yelp
This place sucks butt ! Difficult to read menu , Asked for paper menu , which they don't have ! Horrible attitudes all around ! Horrible ! Won't be back ever ...
google avatar

Yelp
Cosmic Bliss is a cute shop in the Pearl District. It's located near lots of nearby shops and restaurants, most notably Powell's. They only have street parking, so it's tricky to find parking. It also wasn't busy at all, but it being winter, I'm not surprised. I love how spacious it is inside. The aesthetic is so pleasing and there's lots of quirky seats and even a kid's area. There's even board games available to play while you snack on ice cream. The service was good as well. They offered any samples we would like. I love that they have both non-dairy and grass-fed dairy ice cream! All the treats are customizable based on your dietary needs. As for what we ordered, my partner got Twisted Cookie Dough in a waffle cone and I got the Oh, Hey Ginger! shake with grass-fed dairy ice cream. Both were creamy and delicious. I love how the shake had pieces of ginger spiced cookie dough both on top and the bottom. It's definitely a shake you need a spoon to eat with. I'll be honest... I was kinda sticker-shocked by the price. It was ~$20 for both desserts not including tip. I do see myself coming back to try more flavors, but I'm probably just gonna stick to the single scoop. Overall, a nice, dependable place for your ice cream needs!
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
This place is pretty nice. The interior is very spacious and open, with great decor. The options here are also excellent as they have both place and organic based treats. They also have some good-looking shakes, which I need to try next time. I did enjoy the peanut butter bliss with the twisted cookie dough flavors.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Vegan ice cream was good but not as sweet as the full dairy ice cream. The waffle cone was very light in flavor as well. Not a very busy place at 8p on a Friday night. The cookie dough was the best which is what one of my daughters had. The other got vanilla, the oldest got sweet cherry amaretto, and I got some coconut one. My boyfriend got the mint chip galactica which was way better than whatever my coconut one was.
google avatar

Juan S.

Yelp
As a huge fan of ice cream, I'm constantly looking for good places outside of the typical chains such as Baskin Robbins, Ben and Jerry's or even Salt & Straw. When I discovered this place about a week after it had opened, I knew I had to stop in and I'm glad I did. The staff was friendly and the setting is very cool, the furniture all unique with cool mural-like artwork on the walls. The ice cream itself was great and, considering that I am tired of the zany, "we want to be different than everywhere else" type of ice cream flavors in Portland, I was searching for a cool ice cream shop with actually good flavors. The peanut butter flavor was great and my girlfriend had gotten the cookie dough which is a classic. It's all organic and plant based which is impressive because I wouldn't have been able to tell. Overall, it's a great place with a nice vibe and worth a try but it can be a bit spendy for just a cup of ice cream. Check it out anyways!

Yelp
It's a great new ice cream shop in the heart of the Pearl district. I really like the variety of selection of vegan and dairy options for ice cream. Unfortunately I found the ice cream itself to be bland and way overpriced. The decor is nice and spacious inside with lots of seating so that was nice to see.
google avatar

Yelp
Ice cream made from grass fed cow milk or plant based. Had the scoop of peanut butter and it was creamy, dreamy, and delicious. The S'more than a Feeling shake was a tasty frozen treat even on a 40 degree day. They're offering a 10% discount during their soft opening.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I visited here a month ago while on a trip to Portland. All in all it was really good! It is a little on the pricey side of places to get ice cream or frozen yogurt etc. The servers were really nice and the decor was super super cute!
google avatar

Chantay R.

Yelp
Delicious vegan ice cream with a variety of options for shakes, cones, scoops in a cup.
google avatar

Aurora G.

Yelp
Amazing shakes! A bit spendy but definitely worth every penny The workers were super nice and helpful explaining what they had. And the shop is instagramable for sure! Lots of cute seating and a self with games!

Cheryl J.

Yelp
This ice cream is ok at best. The worst one is their chocolate peanut butter flavor. The peanut butter chunks are gigantic, which is not good at all when frozen. Even though I thawed it ok, so to speak, in the microwave, those chunks are rock solid and way too overpowering in flavor if you put a whole one or even half a chunk in your mouth at once. Please use smaller peanut butter chunks, Cosmic Bliss!!!!!!! Of course, I won't know if you ever do make that change, because I'm not going to buy it anymore.

Jess S.

Yelp
This was an amazing find for our kid who is allergic to gluten, dairy and nuts. They had ice cream cones, cookies and many plant based (coconut) ice cream options. They asked about the allergies and showed us ingredients used in each item so that we could ensure that the items were safe. Fun ambiance for the entire family!
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Wow! What a delicious vegan treat. We had the chocolate brownie and cookie dough with a waffle cone, and it was delicious! The staff was friendly, and we loved having Samples.

Yelp
Awesome flavors and friendly staff, but gotta knock a star off for not wearing gloves when scooping the ice cream. Sorry!!!

Yelp
A lovely little shop with very friendly employees. I love the 1/2 portions of cookie icecream, when I just want a little bite of something sweet.

Yelp
Kind, welcoming, consistent service. Artful and hip ambiance. Delicious ice cream and cones! I have been thinking about the gooey pecan pie ice cream ever since.

Yelp

Yelp
The fact they have vegan s'mores made me so happy! As someone who is lactose, I'm often stuck when it comes to craving ice cream. Glad this place is welcoming for those with sensitive stomachs .

Forest D.

Yelp
Good food, very dark chocolate but a tad over priced, try this spot if I'm the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here

Kourtney G.

Yelp
Such a fun stop on our Portland adventure! We tried the Oh Hey Ginger shake and the Lovely Lemon shake and both were incredible! Neither was something we would normally get, but we are so glad we did. I finished the Ginger shake before I could snap a picture. The shop was beautiful and the staff was super friendly. They also have several options for gluten free and dairy free diets.
google avatar

Christina J.

Yelp
I love this new place in the Pearl! My favorite shake is the Chocolate Yes Please the plant based option. We took our family and no one was disappointed with their choices.

Vanessa H.

Yelp
Omg!!! So fabulous! As a celiac vegetarian this place is amazing! I do t know what to do with all of the choices. The flavors are amazing and the service is top notch!!!

Yelp
Delicious ice cream. So good! Enjoyed my chat with the staff. Very friendly and helpful w/ suggestions. I'll be back again soon!

Jerry D.

Yelp
I hadn't heard of this place before because we're from out of state ... we just stumbled onto it after going for a walk after lunch. We read the hype about Salt and Straw before a previous visit to PDX from a National article. We waited in the long lines. We had decent ice cream. This place blows Salt and Straw away. I'm on a diabetes reversal diet so ice cream is not something I normally indulge in ... but I couldn't stop tasting my wife's waffle cone and ice cream. It was amazing. The staff was helpful and friendly. The decor was quirky, bright and clean. We'll be back!

Cara W.

Yelp
First to the folks who gave poor reviews, you must not get it. Is it expensive? Yes. Are all of the ingredients and toppings organic,? Yes. But most important if you are vegan or gluten-free or more importantly, can't have gluten and dairy, it's absolutely phenomenal to walk into a shop where you can get a super decadent shake with cookie dough, or a waffle cone filled with ice cream that won't make you feel terrible! I got the ginger shake and I was truly in a state of bliss eating it. Caramel drizzle, so many spice cookie chunks, and a waffle cone garnish. So good.
