How the Pandemic Changed Food Trends and the Way We Eat | Eater

"A major warehouse club that became a focal point of pandemic panic-buying, with mile-long lines and shoppers emptying shelves of staples like flour, canned soup, and frozen vegetables; its experience illustrates the broader supply-chain disruptions and periodic store shortages that reshaped grocery shopping during the crisis." - Jamie Feldmar

Yelp
Love Costco! This location is huge and surprisingly doesn't get as crowded as other Costco's. It is clean and they have a good amount of samples throughout the store. The parking lot is huge as well so plenty of parking. Good selection of produce and meat here too. Self checkout goes by fast.

Yelp
Trying to be open minded about this review because I also have a BJs membership. Pros for me are better selection of food which is really it. Cons are they are not open first thing in the morning when I grocery shop and the parking is insanely busy. Gas is more expensive too. I don't think I will get my memberships worth out of here.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
what can I say ? costco has great prices especially on gas ! i always go in to buy a chicken and spend a lot more than 4.99 lol Quantities can be large for one-two people but if you can store it or give it away its worth it Also name brand clothes which was a surprise

Yelp
Clean, organized and well stocked...on Black Friday, no less! The food samplers MADE IT RAIN so obvi we bought everything. Even other customers were super chill as we threw axes in the aisle ("You should get that axe-throwing set--my kids love it!"), had a dance party amidst the bulk-nut offerings or just engaged in general shopping-cart buffoonery. Come one, come all to the Costco at Enfield!

Yelp
This is the best & the closest Costco I've ever been to! They have an amazing food court, with good food. They also have a cool, limited selection of books, clothes, and electronics. We go there very frequently (probably once a month or so!). Interestingly, it's right near the Enfield Square. Come visit this place and please don't leave yourself empty-handed. Please become a membership if you're in the area. This is a store you'll enjoy coming to! It's better than the BJ's Wholesale Club but Sam's Club (that used to in Manchester, but then it closed three years ago) always had the same expectations you would have at Costco.

Yelp
I am absolutely obsessed with Costco!! With a membership, customers can find the best quality products ranging from baked goods to meat to furniture. I'm never hesitant to try something new from here because I know it'll always be good. Costco hasn't let me down yet! Even with the Coronavirus, we made a trip to the Enfield Costco to buy a few necessary groceries. There weren't a lot of people shopping at this time, possibly due to the self quarantining that was going on, but there were some people that still had to make the trip to this location. It was nice and clean, and there were some items that were limited one per member (like cases of water bottles). This is a great location overall.

Yelp
Horrible. This place doesn't know how to run itself. I feel like I'm in a different country when I'm here. Everything is so strange it's like a massive warehouse. The portions are humongous on everything. Places like this are the reason America has an obesity problem. The value isn't even good because they give you so much food in one pack that it'll go bad. The employees are rude and unhelpful. It's always busy here too. And on top of that they make YOU pay? Never visit this store.

Yelp
Was told that I couldn't use my wife's Costco card by the cashier, when my wife was 15 feet away at the food court. She blamed "corporate" for her decision to harass me. Thank you so much for your team spirit and Costco courtesy. I have never been treated this way at Costco before, but you just earned a one-star review. I want to add that I had 2 carts, so it was very apparent that my wife was shopping with me. She wanted my wife to get out of the long line at the food court to come back to prove that she was in fact in the building. I instead took out my card that had worn out and no longer worked for the scanner. This particular cashier just had a petty "bone to pick" with me. I guess I just wasn't her type of shopper.

Yelp
This review is for the Enfield Costco's Vision Department. We needed to replace glasses my son lost (argh), and our insurance doesn't cover but 1 pair every 2 years...so off to Costco we went, prescription in hand, to check out their prices. Well, they were phenomenal. Now, my son doesn't have a super complicated prescription, but still...we got two pair of prescription glasses--TWO PAIR--for $220. That is less than what we'd have paid at our eye doc's office for one pair. Incredible. And my son had two pair to ruin/lose! Woot! I must say that the whole process was very smooth at Costco Vision. Ya know how Costco is just a busy place? Well, that's no different for the Vision department. They're just busy, and we just have to understand that we are not going to walk in and out in 10 minutes. But those Vision guys (didn't see any female Vision employees) are efficient! And they are nice. Even though they are flat out with customers, it all ran so smoothly. We were moved through each step of the process patiently and with all the information we needed. Whenever it was our turn, we got 100% of that person's attention, no rushing. And it was really a pleasant experience. Professional and pleasant. We had my son's glasses in under a week (remarkable!), and he loved them. Perfect fit, good to go. We had to come back several months later for a small fix (son's fault, not the glasses), and we were all set in minutes. We will definitely come back for more glasses--um, 1. because my son is sure to ruin/lose more, 2. our vision insurance only gets us 1 pair every 2 years, and we'd like a couple! I also need to say that the person who helped us both times at Enfield's Costco Vision was a man named Tim. He was incredibly professional, helpful, and kind. I'm sure everyone in the department is great, but Tim was who we had experience with, and he is top-notch!

Yelp
I really hate telling you the latest experience at one of my very favorite stores--Costco, but I have written to HQ, submitted this info to their magazine, and put in suggestions at my store, and things have actually gotten worse, not better. Usually, Costco does their research and is ahead of the trend, but when it comes to dreaded CANOLA OIL, they are actually adding it to or purchasing it in more and more of their products. That is bad news for children and parents. Canola's health risks are so bad that anyone doing basic research will learn it is extremely hydrogenated to lessen the presence of the Hexane chemical used to extract the oil from rapeseed. To let you know how much they DO know this is bad, they (Monsanto) has now begun to call rapeseed a vegetable. That is a BIG stretch. Yes seeds are plants--but by no stretch of imagination are they vegetables, and their processing makes them a bad choice. This trans fat attacks brains, kidneys, and livers. Unfortunately, it is now present in everything from baked goods to mayonaise, and to almost any foods that are packaged (like airline snack foods). PLEASE COSTCO stop making us read every label to avoid this poison. And, please do your research: Mehmet Oz, M.D. The Gene Therapy Plan identifies how the lives we lead, and in particular, the foods and nutritional supplements we ingest, are a key determining factor in whether latent disease (which most people have to some degree) materializes or stays dormant. By identifying researched nutritional protocols that target specific conditions, and by providing a range of rich case studies from his practice as a leading oncologist and internist, Dr. Gaynor provides insight and an action plan into how the body operates that will benefit medical practitioners and patients alike. And: https://draxe.com/canola-oil-gm/ Just two of the voluminous research on this oil But, thanks for changing your butter croissants to ALL butter, and taking out the Canola from these. We'll give you that.

Yelp
This is the WORST store in the world! The store is too big and you have to pay to shop which is stupid. They DENIED me from getting samples. This is discrimination and I will not tolerate this disrespect. The employees are RUDE and not approachable or friendly. Never coming here again.

Coco B.

Yelp
The quality and price of the food. Various different items that I loved. I also loved the taste of simple.

Yelp
I love this Costco. Literally, love this Costco. I live in rocky hill and refuse to go to the New Britain one because it's terrible, and prefer to drive all the way to Enfield because I like this Costco so much. In the almost 6 years I've been going here, I've only ever had 2 bad experiences, and they weren't bad enough to deter me (FYI don't go to the tire center within the 2 week period before Xmas). They're always fully stocked and the employees are super helpful.

Yelp
I just have to say the women at Costco Enfield store are nothing short of amazing as a team. I stopped and mentioned to Ginny that I had a problem with pairing my hearing aid after changing from Verizon to T mobile. Ginny cleaned my earpiece and worked on trying to establish blue tooth. She had some problems, but said don't worry we are not going to give up. She teamed up with one of the other ladies and discovered my dominant hearing aid was now left and not the right side! My sincere appreciation for their effort to satisfy the customer in every way and with a very polite -Have A Merry Christmas!

Yelp
With the largest October snow storm approaching, we ran some errands in Enfield, CT. We bought supplies and food (some of them were in the Costco coupon book). This is a very nice Costco and organized like all Costco's I've been to. The service is efficient and friendly. Costco has some of the best prices for food, beverages, and items. Xie Xie!

Yelp
I just joined because I wanted to belong to a club. lol I really do like Costco. You will never have difficulty returning an item (apart from electronics) and if you don't have your receipt you can usually still have a cash refund or store credit with no difficulty. Low prices on milk and fruit and other staples. I find their prepackaged chicken prices can't be beat. Great bakery items. Quality products. I'm a fan.
google avatar

Olivia R.

Yelp
Always great prices can't beat them. They always have a great selection and are always changing. I also love them they have the cookers it feel like you can get lunch for free . Here's a tip though! Avoid going to Costco on the weekends unless you want to be prepared to be stuck in lines literally forever. And parking on the weekend is a nightmare. If you're trying to feed a family or even two people this is a wonderful place to shop! You can't beat it!

Yelp
I just bought a 24 pack of 85" 4K televisions. I used one of the 8 Ford Superduty's I bought from Costco last week to take them all home. I love Costco. Did I mention I take the family out to eat at all the sample stations they set up midday?
google avatar

Katy L.

Yelp
First time here!! The staff was very friendly and helpful the receipt checker was a real charmer and funny guy. I had been visiting their Cisco in Springfield,Ma and couldn't find a product I needed so they suggested I visit this location just about sixteen minutes away from there. I called ahead they had the product and went out of their way to take it off the floor and reserve the items I needed so upon arrival I was warmly greeted and picked up and paid for the items I was purchasing. The store was very clean and organized. We will definitely visit this location again. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
The Enfield location is your standard Costco, good selection, main aisles strategically filled with portable stands to eat or sell products, and of course to slow you down to browse versus in and out like my self. They should add an HOV lane for us speed shoppers! . Lines move very fast, especially when you figure out the fast scanners to go to. Only other down side from cluttered aisles is the add parking sequence, can be dangerous to drive and walk in/out.

Yelp
I went in with hubby to get a membership, we had a guy attend to us that evening on Friday 5/7/21, and when we got to the counter and found out we wanted a membership, the guy was bothered and annoyed. Saying "well it looks like I'm not going home early". First and foremost customer service is the job you take on. If your shift ended then leave and don't see anyone. But being bothered because we intruded in his schedule isn't for us to be mistreated. If it wasn't because we drove 45 minutes to get there, I'd have left. We did right after and didn't bother purchasing anything in the store.
google avatar

Yelp
This costco is like most other costcos in terms of cleanliness, good service an good product selection. I came here with my niece who loves to hand the receipt to the receipt checker and the lady drew a smiley face on the back of the receipt! My niece loved it!
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
Costco is much better than BJ's (in my opinion). Cheap food at food court ($1.50 for hot dog and drink, cheap pizza) Cheap alcohol in bulk (great for parties) Optical department is very affordable Meat is cheaper than most places

Yelp
I frequent this Costco maybe once a week to get the usual stuff. Aside from risking your life in the parking lot and the long check-out lines, Costco is great. Love the produce and dairy section. Great deals can be found in almost every dept. They have a huge selection of unique organic items you cannot find anywhere else. The store is always clean and organized. Painless return experience. They didn't even ask why I was returning something. They just said do you want cash or back on your card. Best place ever for diapers, milk, paper towels, and toilet paper. If you want to stroke out and die go on a weekend, the place is a zoo of Americans consuming mass quantities. A weekday afternoon and evening isn't so bad. Also, had a great experience buying a brand new Subaru Forester through Costco from Bertera in West Springfield. We saved thousands by just showing them our card.

Yelp
This is actually my favorite store. I have only been a member for a year and wonder how I did my grocery shopping before trying out Costco. I love all the samples and have actually bought quite a few products I would have never thought about purchasing without trying. My husband and I are eating a lot healthier which is super easy to do with all the healthy food options available at Costco. The rotisserie chickens are delicious and well priced. We always pick up one or two. I love that you can use your membership anywhere. While on vacation in Hawaii we stopped at their Costco to load up on our vacation needs. This is also a great place to pick up and save money on gift card packs for holiday gifts!

Yelp
I love Costco!! I will always be a member. Everything I buy I know is quality. I have never returned an item. I would put an I HEART COSTCO bumper sticker on my car if I could.
google avatar

Yelp
As hubby and I sat eating sausage and peppers in the food court, I wondered if anybody else wrote how freaking amazing their sausage and peppers are. I wish we could buy these from them to make at home, but when we ask they say they don't carry them like that for sale. I mean everything else is really good too. I'll pass on the smoothie though, never been a fan of that there. But most everything there is a great price, value, and flavor is spot on. I've never had a better sausage and pepper ANYWHERE.

Yelp
What a pleasant COSTCO for shopping! It is not crowded like the COSTCOs in our hometowns....Westbury, NY and Boca Raton, FL. The layout is basically the same, so it wasn't hard finding what we needed. Prices are also pretty standard as was the dining area. Gas prices were also reasonable for the area. The store is clean and checkout is efficient. It is always nice to find a COSTCO when traveling. You know what to expect.
google avatar

Jan C.

Yelp
Love thIs place, quality products, helpful and friendly staff and good prices, definitely worth the membership fee (pays for itself with the executive plan). I start my weekly grocery trip here every time as it saves me tons versus buying everything at the grocery store!

John S.

Yelp
This is probably the best Costco in the immediate area. Very clean, well stocked, super organized, great customer service attitude. I had a small problem once with a tire installation and stated this on the website. The regional manager contacted me and resolved my issue almost immediately. World Class location.

Yelp
I am only writing this review because I am ticked about the service at the food court. I wanted to grab a quick cheese pizza because a lot of the local pizza joints were closed. I called...and called..and called. You would think I was calling the pope. I could not get through. Finally I called customer service after 15 mins of trying as I was driving up 91. The women who answered said they were swamped and had 30 people in line. At this point I was pulling into the parking lot. I walk inside and there was NO ONE in line. Not a soul. I walk up to the counter where the two ladies are talking to each other. Of course the first words out of my mouth are..." are your phones working?" Their reply..yes but we are short handed. I placed my order and on my way I went. The lady had the gull to shove my pizza at me. While I was at the food court waiting for my pizza, I called the food court. No one answered..and they in the back, not waiting on customers at all..sigh. Must of been just too much work to take on a couple extra orders. Look..I understand you are short..however..you can answer a phone and make a pizza. You only have 4 basic items on the menu..all of which are "stick in the oven" items. Your not giving birth or taking blood. I love this store for its selection in items, but forget eating here. You get what you pay for. I will stick with my local, small business establishments :)

Yelp
I love this place! Since I have been a BJ's shopper for the last 4-5 years, I never felt the need to go to Costco. Especially considering that BJ's is right down the street from me and Costco is 25 minutes away. Anyways, a Living Social deal was all I needed to get a Costco membership. Also, I knew there are a few products that Costco carries that BJs or the regular grocery store doesn't carry. Redeeming my living social deal was beyond easy and the associate, Geraldine, was beyond helpful and very nice to work with to get everything setup. She explained all the perks of the membership, etc. After getting our membership cards, we started to walk around and I felt like we were in the Disneyland of warehouse clubs! I am so used to BJ's that I was expecting a store like that, but Costco was all that a much more. I was a little bummed because I know Costco doesn't take coupons besides Costco coupons, but the prices were really good and/or there were instant rebates on a lot of items so worked out to be cheaper or the same as BJ's. I was overwhelmed by all the samples! What a great way to try out new products for free! There are so many neat items at Costco that will make going there maybe once or twice a month definitely worthwhile! I would certainly go there more if it were closer. One thing I found annoying was that it closes at 6PM on Saturday...seems incredibly early and you can only use debit cards.

R K.

Yelp
I go here every week. Despite the fact that we're retired and feed just two people, I cannot believe how much food I buy. I can always rely upon Costco and their Kirkland brand for superior quality foods. Their BBQ chickens are legendary, and I purchase the larger quantities of other foods so I can freeze the excess. If at times I may pay more, I willingly do because Costco treats their employees well. In fact, this is a huge factor for many consumers who patronize your stores. If I were to offer any suggestions, they would be: 1. Please label aisles. If you were to observe your customers, you'd see that many are older. Many of us have wicked arthritis so it's hard to walk long distances to find things, and it would save us miles of walking to just know what's down a particular aisle. 2. As an older person, I note that many of your food demonstrators are older, too. They wouldn't be working if they didn't need the money. So please allow them to have a chair and sit now and then when their legs begin to hurt. We older folks notice things like this. 3. We wish you'd use those food demonstrators to feature Kirkland products. There are many times I'd like to purchase your store brands, but I'd first like to try them before buying a full case. 4. How about an express checkout line during busy times?

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Costco in general, and I especially like the cheap milk, soda, paper towels, etc. Staple stuff. If you go often enough you'll also figure out the best times to go for free samples which can be quite numerous. Generally around lunch time. The only problem with the samples is most of them are out when the store is busiest so you'll have to throw some elbows just to get a taste of, you know, ham on a cracker. It's free so I'm not really complaining, per se, but I promise you will encounter some people who are waayyyyy too aggressive about getting some free nibbles. Other complaints: I wish the baked goods were better. Bagels are basically like regular bread shaped like bagels. WRONG. Pies are also generally way, way too sweet and gloppy, even compared to most store-bought pies which often have the same problem. Lastly, the parking lot is way too small. Go on a Saturday and people will be parked up on curbs and in the grass like it's Christmas Eve. I point these complaints out because otherwise I really, really like Costco and especially the people who work there. It's also a GREAT place for glasses and I feel like it's worth the cost to join just for that. I'm also adding this to my CT Hot Dog list. After you check out up front, dogs + a soda are $1.50. The dog is not very good and the bun is way to bread-y, but we're talking less than 2 bucks. Pile it high with mustard and kraut and relish and it's a spectacular value, just don't expect it to stand up to a real CT hot dog.

Marie R.

Yelp
Amazing! Enough said. If you don't have a membership you are missing out. We are only a family of 3 but still do all our shopping here. It's a myth that you need to be a big family to buy here. There are so many different things that can be purchased here that this is always my go-to place when I need to grab something for our home. We recently purchased a new property and the membership has even come in handy for home goods, building material, etc. Love love love this place!

Yelp
I really like going to Costco, wishing there was one closer, I really don't get how they figured it makes sense to put two so close to each other and not have put one by Hartford instead of Enfield. This is a nice large clean and well organized location. Lines seems to move fast. Large selection of Maui Jim's sunglasses and major name brands, large selection of apparel, gadgets, toys, seasonal items and frozen goods. Parking is decent considering how busy this place gets. Con- only takes your Amex card...so I had to open one just to be able to shop here, wish they could expand like BJ's and take all plastic This is also an issue at their food court as there is a minimum on cards so unless you want to buy 10 hot dogs you better have cash
google avatar

Maci M.

Yelp
I do like this Costco, though my main store is the West Springfield. I think the parking is atrocious. They should have engineered it better. I don't like that the liquor store isn't costco owned. I prefer the one in west Springfield for that. However the store is much bigger than west Springfield. They've got more variety. I will be back but only if in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
It's a Costco, most employees are helpful when needed. It's what you would expect from a box store. Pretty good over all and clean. Awesome chicken
google avatar

Jeff N.

Yelp
I buy contact lenses here at this Costco. My optometrist is Dr Kyung Hong who is very nice and accommodating to my schedule. Its affordable. Other than that the Costco is the same as others. But there seems to be less food samples here though than the Costco I used to go to at home in California.

M G.

Yelp
This rating is only for Emily, who apparently was already "stressed out" w/the store only being open for 5 mins. Called 3X, got disconnected, then hung up on, finally get through to ask about a particular item, since website often differs from store. Say "Good Morning ! " & get no reply, ask about a particular item (garden) & get "don't even know what that is" so I quickly explain only to get "NO!" so I start to say "OK, thaaaank..." & I get hung up on in my ear: charming. Usually people are nice when I've been there in person, but this is customer srvc? Not someone I'd want representing my business.. I do prefer this Costco vs WH, however would love to see them get/keep more organic & healthy items. Every time something good comes in, it's gone in a month. We live quite a distance & makes it frustrating. Lots of items are cheaper, but you have to look closely @ ingredients.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Love the store and prices, just think the parking area should be bigger. Not that they can help it but weekends are a nightmare there!!
google avatar

Melodie H.

Yelp
I really enjoy this costco. It seems to have more items than the one in West Springfield. Parking lot is usually packed but that is Costco for you. Also, the location is right across from the Enfield Mall. The parking lot has a Home Depot in it too. You can really get a lot done. Of course the one thing I love about costco is there hot dog with a soda is 1.50. Costco is smart, since they have a concession stand right at the check out. Nicely played costco, nicely played. Again, you don't even need to buy anything around lunch time. They usually have samples of their food. The samples are pretty good sizes. I know I have filled up on them. I didn't even have room for the hot dog.

john K.

Yelp
This store is great and folks who work there are helpful and friendly. But I am NOT enjoying Costco's switch to Citi Visa. If is lot reached a live person this morning, after navigating through touchtone hell. I had tried last week but didn't have the patience. Amex is ranked the second best is customer satisfaction, Citi Visa? Ranked second worst. I hope this isn't a harbinger of where Costco is headed.
google avatar

Norco B.

Yelp
The entire concept of the Costco experience is baffling to me. We pay money to be members for the privilege of shopping in their business. Then we buy bulk quantity of items of which they only provide us limited selection. We literally feel like we are fighting a battle if we go on the weekends and have to mentally prepare for that. The whole situation is stressful and often doesn't make sense. And yet, we do it. For what? For the free samples of coarse. The very reason why you would want to be a member. And so I give this review 4 stars on the basis of free samples that taste so good that I often end up suckered into buying so giant bag or box of a food product I wouldn't have otherwise. Member of this elite club for 8 years now. What is wrong with me?

Craig L.

Yelp
Review for Optometrist Dr Kyung H. Hong O.D. Terrible experience. Had exam. He said I had an astigmatism. Gave script for distance, reading, and astigmatism. Ordered glasses. Wore them for 1 week and something was wrong so went back for re-exam. He admitted it was wrong and there was no astigmatism and distance script was wrong. Ordered new glasses and I could see better distance without them. Asked for my money back and he refused. He said eyes change day to day. What a load of .... Dont waste your money or your time. The optical department was great helping me with picking out frames, fitting of frames and returns of the actual glasses. Tami is excellent. Just dont get an exam there.

Yelp
Took our daughter, who lives in New York State. She loved the deals... Busy operations and crowded. (We like our Hawaii Kai store better.)

Richard A.

Yelp
It is Costco. Excellent customer service. The products rotate so if you think you want it you better grab it. With their return policy you can't go wrong.

Deb G.

Yelp
The Enfield store is my favorite. It's easy to get in and out, find parking, and the staff is friendly and always helpful.

Yelp
We love going to Costco! We usually find great deals on groceries. The store is ALWAYS clean, even when they're super busy. Even though sometimes there could be a lot of people in line waiting to check out, they manage to Plow through the lines pretty quickly. I don't usually ever wait more than 5 minutes to check out. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful when you need something. After all these years I still find great values and I still enjoy shopping there.
