18 Hottest New Restaurants in Charleston, July 2024

"Coterie recently hired chef Damian Sandoval to revamp the entire menu. The previous offerings were Indian-influenced, but Sandoval pulled flavors and techniques from around the globe for the new menu. Currently, customers will find Trinidadian doubles, chicken tinga, Thai curry, and five spice rice noodles." - Erin Perkins

Best Charleston Restaurants to Bring Parents - Eater Carolinas

"Parents who appreciate authentic Italian cuisine will love Pan e Vino, which feels like a family run bistro inside. Complex sauces are carefully crafted from old recipes and pair with spaghetti, pappardelle, and airy gnocchi. Patrons can’t go wrong with the daily risotto and should save room for a slice of tiramisu." - Parker Milner

Patio nights are the best! It feels like a tropical retreat. Warm night but the fans kept it pleasant. I might be able to live forever on the peach and buratta salad. Melt in your mouth deliciousness. We enjoyed them braided lamb neck and fish special. One of my new favorite dinners.

Definitely eat here! The cocktail menu is extensive and creative, plus the food was great. I sat outside and there were a lot of fans and shade, so it was comfortable despite the heat. In fact, the outdoor space is really pretty!

I just had the pleasure of enjoying a Thanksgiving tasting menu at Coterie, and it was a wonderful experience. The food was exceptional—each course was thoughtfully prepared, with fresh ingredients and great attention to detail. The flavors were well-balanced, and each dish offered something unique and delicious. The warm weather outside made the meal even more enjoyable, creating a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a special meal.

Google
Loving the kitchen residency program they’re doing- especially the current Calabria one! Coterie has my absolute favorite bar program in Charleston - truly incredible cocktails. Staff is incredible- knowledgeable and obviously passionate about their work. Also their patio is gorgeous and enjoyable even in August. 10/10 I can’t recommend Coterie enough

Google
Perfect evening! Starting with the small plates and the fun, refreshing, endless choice of drinks. Our entrees were unique, and the perfect plate for each of us! Our waitress was highly knowledgeable and recommended everything we drank and ate! She was spot on and very well versed about the drinks and food. Great outdoor patio, relaxing and very enjoyable! 10 out of 10

Our experience at Coterie was truly outstanding. We hosted our rehearsal dinner on the patio, and it was everything we hoped for and more. The space is beautiful and full of character, creating the perfect atmosphere for our celebration. The food and cocktails were exceptional—creative, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. Chef Zach put together a fantastic menu that our guests are still talking about. The service was seamless, and the entire team was professional, attentive, and kind. A special thank you to Jeremy and Jay, the owners, who went out of their way to make the evening feel personal and memorable. Whether you're planning a private event or simply dining out, Coterie delivers a five-star experience from start to finish.

Google
Loved every bit of our experience last night at Coterie. The food was excellent, the vibe was great and the drinks had us staying a lot longer than we should have. Met the owner who was very lovely. Our bartender/waiter, Sa’quan, that took care of us was amazing and very personable. The menu recommendations were spot on and amazing. Vast amount of cocktail choices that were all amazing. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone while in Charleston, SC.

Google
Nice cozy restaurant tucked away a block off King Street. Nice outdoor patio and covered patio (dog friendly). Very good selection of craft cocktails and knowledgeable servers. Everything tasted very good and fresh- I only had a few dishes but they were well prepared with balanced flavors.

Yelp
Coterie offers an interesting menu with asian/indian, hispanic, and mediterranean influences. I've tried each entree and have been impressed all around. The barbacoa is outstanding. The drink options are excellent. They have featured cocktails with collaborations from different bartenders, and often have new drinks on their menu. Love the vibe of the outdoor patio. Coterie is a refreshing departure from the mainstream cuisine offered in this area, definitely on my list of "must try" while you are here. One of my favorite hidden gems. I don't understand how this place isn't always packed

Yelp
Went for a second time this cinco de mayo for street tacos and some of the best repasado cocktails in the city. The menu is a wonderful fusion exploration of many different cultures but all made to be familiar and not intimidating. Our first visit we shared the Trinidadian inspired doubles, the chicken tinga tostada and pho steak. So far everything has been very flavorful without trying to do too much as some other fusion restaurant can do. The flavors are high quality but simple in the best way possible. Service is always friendly and laid back. And the plant-filled patio is the perfect shaded spot for summer cocktails.

Yelp
Not a great experience at Coterie. Expected much different food. Not the clay pot chicken tikka masala-- so please don't expect that. The chicken pieces were rubbery and the sauce it was in was thin and watery-- not your usual creamy and spicey Tikka masala sauce for sure. The veggie dish aloo gobi -- was not bad, although very dry -- peas and potatoes etc etc.... Did not finish but I did return the chicken tikka masala stating my above comments about the dish so it was quickly wisked away. The restaurant has an garden like "islands feel" environment - with dining both indoor and out. I arrived at 5:00 opening and chose to dine inside. I was the only one inside for the entire time. The server went to turn on Jazz/ lounge type music and it was blasting-- felt like a nightclub, I asked him to lower or else I'd lose my mind! I wonder if they turned it up after I left but wasn't a very complimentary thing to have on inside especially while having dinner in a cozy atmosphere. Save it for the late night Bar scene-- yes that I can see!! I'm usually pretty liberal with rating but the chicken tikka through me off- to make suggestions would be futile; the naan bread was mealy and should have been crispy pieces. I am forced to add a low rating. I had higher expectations based on website photos. Very disappointed. Left hungry.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Coterie and we loved it. The hostesses were so kind and even checked in on us later in the evening. Our server was lnpwledbale about the menu and was able to give us some suggestions as well. We sat outside which was a great setting with the lights and fans. Would definitely recommend starting with the chutney flight as an appetizer. The cocktails were so fresh too. We then ordered the butternut squash and the chicken tikka as entrees to share. The butternut was so full of flavor we loved it. The chicken tikka was so good as well. We went for a birthday and our server gave us a crème brûlée on the house which was so kind and delicious. We can't wait to come back the next time we're in Charleston!!

Yelp
The cutest Indian spot I've seen. Nestled away from the busy downtown street in its own little cove. It was a slow dinner service when I went in (just how I like it) and sat outside. My server was very friendly and constantly checked in on me. I decided to go on a small binge and try multiple small dishes thinking I would be able to get full off 2 or 3. For my drink I had a Bow & Arrow (any cocktail with Mezcal is a win for me). Food was a bit slow coming out considering a relatively slow dinner crowd. I Started with the Aaloo Gobi. Flavor was good, presentation an A+. Second was the Tandoori Ribs. Absolutely delish. Meat was fall off the bone melt in your mouth. Although it was very good, Price and portion size? Didn't quite add up to me. Lastly I got the Palak Paneer, really good. Once again I was lacking the portion size for the price. After an hour and a half overall I enjoyed myself thoroughly, I did leave still wanting more food but I enjoyed everything I did consume. Maybe next time ill just stick with a single entrée.

Yelp
Quite possibly the worst dining experience I have ever had in CHS. The chicken tiki and steak salad were edible at best. Service at the bar was terrible. The only positive thing I have to say about the place is the hostess was really nice, and the out door patio is unique.

Yelp
Delicious and creative al fresco dining tucked into a neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of Meeting Street but still easily walkable to it. Friendly service, good cocktails, perfect ambiance for Charleston in the spring.

Yelp
Coterie was westernized Indian food. Now, there's really nothing wrong with that. I mean if it brings the people in...who cares? My 2 friends and I visited on a random Saturday night for dinner back in July. It had just finished raining, and we were seated in the covered but outside patio. While it was refreshing and cool at first, it became humid way too quickly. Of the 3 of us, my 1 friend & I got drinks (the other was pregnant). I believe I got the Carlita which was a tequila based drink, and my friend got the Staycation which was a rum based drink. Both of our drinks were outstanding & our hopes on the food skyrocketed. We got our water in stainless steel cups which we got giddy about because as Indian girls ourselves, we grew up on drinking out of stainless steel cups as well. My preggo friend ordered a masala ginger beer at first hoping it would taste like a masala soda, but it was literally only ginger beer. So, we requested our waitress to see if she could bring her a mango lassi instead (she took only 1 sip of the ginger beer). While she did bring out the mango lassi and took the ginger beer, she still charged us for it. We also noticed our waitress taking FOREVER to come to our table, so after she delivered all of our drinks, we quickly put in all the apps and dinner items that we wanted. For apps, we ordered the Kale Bhel, Veggie Ceviche, and Paneer 65. For dinner, we ordered Palak paneer and captain tikka with no paneer. The apps were our favorite part of the meal. The Kale bhel was absolutely amazing as was the ceviche - both were mouthwatering. The paneer 65 was good as well but we've had better - it was SO dry. The palak paneer and captain tikka we felt were very bland. There were not enough seasonings in either of these curries, and it was super disappointing. After the sun set, the place also gets really dark and we could barely see our food. I understand it's an outdoor patio, but there needs to be some proper lighting. Overall, I would come back for apps & drinks, but definitely skipping the dinner.

Yelp
Right now it is hard to get a reservation - this place is very small and intimate - and I can see why! Everything about this new 'Indian fusion' vibe was excellent, if flavor and dishes a bit unusual and off the beaten track. The four of us Shared the fish ceviche, wonton boats, Chicken Tinga , Seafood Stew, Ana Thai Curry Veggies. I am not usually a fan of curry flavors, but this was so delicately balanced and flavorful, even I enjoyed it. We had plenty to eat, but may not be enough for those with hearty appetites. Our server was prompt, knowledgable, and friendly, but not too intrusive. It got a lot quieter once the large table of 8 finished and left. A definite on our return list, especially for a special occasion.

Yelp
This is an excellent restaurant which should be better known. I had just gone to the farmers' market in Marion Square where the highest-quality mustard greens were only available in a huge bunch which I could never finish eating even if I had a large family. I showed the waitress who brought over the chef, and he was able to use it. The chef improvised a dish on the spot for us as a thank you for the fresh mustard greens. The mood at the outdoor eating area was festive with several couples and families enjoying themselves, and the waitress gave us excellent suggestions for drinks and dessert. We also had some very creative food based upon Indian dishes with some unusual variations. I definitely plan to return soon.

Yelp
We were brought in by the happy hour menu. The location and ambiance are great. We thought the drinks were alright, food was sub-par, and service was 1/5. We've heard the entree's are good so maybe we'll be back to try those, but if you're interested in the happy hour, I'd pass.

Yelp
I have only been for the brunch so far, which I would absolutely recommend! I was told that the brunch had potentially been on pause previously, but it is back and worth checking out! We sat outside on a warm December day (upper 50s) a couple weeks ago. For a Saturday late morning, it surprised me we were the only ones there when it opened for brunch. We figured people may not know it's open for brunch, so maybe this will help get the word out! We got the appam omakase, beet bhel, aaloo gobi & tomato hash with egg, the eggs benedict, and Carolina bog. We really enjoyed both the savory & sweet appam and the sauces that come with them. The beet bhel was not my favorite because it was a cold dish and on the sweeter side (I usually prefer savory), but it was refreshing and good for any beet-lovers out there. I really loved the fresh tomatoes with the aaloo gobi, and the egg was poached perfectly! Our party also enjoyed the eggs benedict, especially the tandoori hollandaise. The Carolina Bog was also a favorite, hearty and fragrant; the chicken was juicy and it's got a similar profile to chicken tikka masala, just mixed in with the rice. My only complaint is that I was expecting a hot masala chai rather than an iced beverage. Overall, the ambiance (both indoors and outdoors) is spectacular, the service was great, and I am looking forward to going back and trying more dishes (the burji for brunch in particular).

Yelp
A beautiful place with great food. It was Indian fusion but the food tasted very good. We loved the savory appam. The aloo gobi and Okra were great too. We also tried the kale bhel which was ok. Seemed to be run by one person so he seemed busy although was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly not a place I'd go back to, and it is such a beautiful place. The food was just not good at all - okra was stringy and unedible, and the fish was overcooked and laid in a bed of marinara ?? (This place is supposed to have Indian flavors) The grits had no flavor, the chutney was just some sauces without Indian flavors, the ribs were boring, and aloo gobi also had no flavor. Service was horrid, one meal came a good 10 mins. after the other 3 - so, had we waited, as politeness calls for, we would have all eaten cold meals... They do have a delicious gin cocktail with a beautiful marigold floating in it. I do hope they step it up in the flavor department - because it is a beautiful spot.

Yelp
My two daughters took me here to celebrate Father's Day. It could not have been better. We started with delicious cocktails. For dinner we all shared dishes. Started with Trinidad doubles , scallop ceviche and pork, shrimp dumplings . Then we moved on to Chicken Ting and 1/2 rack of ribs with chamey. The sauces over each dish were fabulous. Go to their web page to get a better description of the dishes. Service was wonder and the patio seating was beautiful . This is a hidden gem in downtown Charleston.

Yelp
The space at Coterie is beautiful - the outdoor bar is a great touch and the inside is decorated beautifully. The drink program here is strong and the food is pretty good, however there are a few items on the menu that were overpriced and underwhelming. If you go you should definitely go to happy hour and get the appam (rice lentil pancake) was definitely our favorite. The chicken tikka and cheeseburger are great $8 specials on HH. The lamb shank was under-seasoned and significantly overpriced for what we got ($48) and we were charged another $4 for more vindaloo sauce to enhance the dish. Smaller menu and some good items, but definitely check out pictures to understand portions and what you are paying for.

B M.

Yelp
Disappointing. The restaurant was not busy or crowded. I counted just 9 tables with guests, yet it took over 30 minutes to get our drinks. Nothing on the menu looked good to our kids. The ambiance was fine. The drinks were fine. But the service was so painfully slow that we paid for our drinks and left.
google avatar

Tracey M.

Yelp
Menu changed from Indian influence ... server said "new American" but it was a very confused menu. Chicken tinga seemed to try to be Mexican but not good. Noodles were cold (intentionally) but weird. Can't imagine this restaurant making it.
google avatar

Tara P.

Yelp
Pros: outdoor, terraced seating with nice landscaping and intimate feel. Naan is super yum and the flavors are on point. Cons: service is a bit dodgy- seems like a few college kids and their attention to detail isn't always great. Overall- fun quick group date night dinner spot with lovely outdoor area.
google avatar

Louis Suo L.

Yelp
Service was quite slow. Restaurant wasn't even that full for thanksgiving to justify the food wait times. When the dessert finally arrived, the cake at the bottom was cold and not warm. Relies on covered outdoor seating for 50% of the seating, so you are kind of exposed to the elements. Lighting was very dim and limited. Don't think I will be back

Whitney P.

Yelp
We got the lamb, ribs, and furikake rice. Everything was amazing! Great service and cocktails as well.
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
Truly the best Indian food I've ever had. The ambience at this spot is next level. The atmosphere is so peaceful and the decor is well thought out. The service was next level. The first time I came we sat at the bar and the owner was our server- he was beyond helpful and made sure our service was top notch. Every time I go back the food just keeps getting better and better. Cannot recommend more.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
This place is really cute and small. Food is really good and flavorful but it gave two of my friends heartburn. I was personally ok. Took a star off bc we were sat down 30 mins after our reservation and it was POURING rain but they wanted to keep the door open? So it was super hard to hear anything
google avatar

Yelp
WOW! What a gorgeous patio - the ambiance was soft and cozy - with plants and string lights throughout. Happy hour is at the bar only until 7pm! Our server was super knowledgeable about the menu and shared crowd favorites and his favorites. We did the chicken tikka, butternut squash dish and the Trinidad doubles! Apps came out with dinner - so if you prefer them seperate consider not ordering all at once. I had the house made lemongrass iced tea which was a great non alcoholic option. We each ordered a side of rice which was a great addition to the meals!

Yelp
I found the perfect place for a unique night out. I love when I get to try something that's completely unfamiliar to me and I end up being surprised by the atmosphere, the food and the cocktails. I went to a group meet up here and never been before. I instantly fell in love with the outdoor patio space it was big and spacious I also fell in love with their skewers my favorite was absolutely the shrimp and the beef and he's just a combination of the protein with veggies and their dipping sauces and it was yummy. They had quite a few fun cocktails I believe my favorite one was the one that had mezcal and they light it on fire to give it the Smokey taste and it was great. They have so much to choose from. You have to visit to try it out it's a Modern Indian Restaurant get ready for a taste adventure.

Yelp
Nov 23rd 7:30 pm, Thanksgiving dinner with family at Coterie, 17 Warren St, Charleston, SC 29403: We were 9 family members who tried this Indian-Fusion restaurant. Reservation done with Resy for Indoor "Dining Room" keeping in mind the evening cold weather in Charleston, SC. Got seated at a covered outdoor with few heaters; by Jital Vagehla co-owner of Coterie, wife of Jeremy Buck; co-owner of Coterie. Since our party had non-vegetarians along with vegetarians; we split our group while seating. * Note: Vegetarians who were seated towards the end of the long table (joined by adding few metal tables and chairs) had weak/no heat from the overhead heaters. Appetizers ordered, served and main-course meals were ordered. Appetizer fare: Cold started biting into the Vegetarians. Requested to speak to Jital about the lack-of-heat towards the end of the table. Conversation with her: I was told the overhead heaters cannot be pivoted, no additional floor heater can be provided (due to hazard laws). She did turn on another overhead heater after my request. * Note: She tells me that we booked an "Outdoor Patio" seating through Resy. Absolutely Not True!! Fusion food was OK! We have had better in NYC and elsewhere. Get the $552 cheque which includes 20% gratuity. Added $50 additional as tip, total bill of $600+change. Happily paid it! On the way out spoke to Jital Vaghela, about our Resy request for "Dining Room" seating. Showed our Resy booking (image attached). She refused to concur/agree with me. Starts showing me her iPad with table seating details. * Seriously!! : Jeremy Buck, the co-owner jumps in and snaps at me, "You are harassing my wife and we do our best in seating customers" while mixing a cocktail. I tell him "Good for you, for seating customers which is NOT per their request" and I start walking out. At the exit door, told them,"If customer feedback is not heard, then why have customers at Coterie" * Future customers: Let you decide about the food, experience, community and hospitality at Coterie, Charleston SC. * Our first-hand experience: Coterie Charleston, SC and its team did not live up to their promise of "a focus on experience, community, and hospitality" (images attached copyright of Resy, Instagram, Coteriechs.com)

Yelp
Wonderful little spot. Nice covered patio area with lively music. The food is Indian/Caribbean fusion and delicious! I had the doubles with lamb. They also make a great craft cocktail. Try the H2O. The service was great. Will defiantly be back the next time I visit Charleston.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out last minute for Valentine's Day. They were fairly busy which is understandable, and the staff were all extremely nice, however the service was very slow. We ordered food when we put in our drink orders and were still there for over 2 hours. The atmosphere was decent. It's a cute little restaurant but the music was a bit loud. You had to shout a bit when talking. I'd say the best part of the meal were the drinks. I'd definitely come back for those again, but I was not impressed with the food. The appam was good but came out cold. The shrimp and grits as well at the paneer malai were both pretty good as well. The yellow lentils however was very disappointing. I love lentils and was very excited to try them but they were watery and flavorless. Charleston is really lacking in good Indian food so I was hoping to really like this place however that didn't end up being the case unfortunately.

Gates L.

Yelp
Atmosphere is cool.... But I wouldn't tell anyone visiting Charleston to put this on there list. May of 24-the wait staff is terrible. You can kind of tell the vibe is off by the lack of people there.... We didn't want to stay for entrees because it was so bad.

Yelp
Had an hour to kill ahead of a show at the Music Hall last night and thought Coterie would be a good place to hang. I found a spot at the bar and narrowed it down to two options, letting the bartender make the final decision for me. Drink #1 was the "Staycation", followed by "Simply Irresistible" which had a fancy custom Coterie-stamped ice cube! Following the bartender's advice, I ordered the appam, which is a rice-lentil pancake full of veggies that I ate way too quickly, and ordered the paneer 65 (look at the way to the end of the menu!) to share with my friends. The paneer was a bit spicier than I normally like, but still a good treat. It was really nice to sit at the outside bar on a perfect Monday evening with some friends, sipping on yummy cocktails.

Yelp
Amazing Indian food w American twists. The service at the bar was decent. The ambiance was cozy, quiet and very romantic.
google avatar

Young K.

Yelp
The first Indian American fusion I have ever had. The cocktails were amazing, especially the Chai No Lait. We ordered 2 appetizers and it was shared between two people. They were out of the chutney flight, so we got the Appam instead. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Appam: SO GOOD! I wanted to order 4 more more of this. Made up for disappointment for the chutney flight. Kale 'bhel': It had a very unique taste. I had never tasted anything like it. The puffed rice was added a nice crunch, and it's similar to a salad but different in a way due to the dressing and potatoes.

Yelp
Outside is definitely the vibe... went for happy hour on a Sunday and it was very chill and prices were great .. food was delicious,I jus wish the chicken sandwich had a little more sauce to go with it .. my drink was very good.. I would also recommend getting another bathroom lock.. I couldn't figure out how to work it cause I had to go ..luckily I was done and washing my hands when another customer came busting in.

Yelp
The food was really great, excellent Country Captain Tikka. But the rest....maybe it's because it was a Saturday night. But we sat outside in almost complete darkness due to lack of any real lighting. I get the vibe they're trying to create but it was just so oddly dark it felt like we were eating dinner in a nightclub. The bizarre choice of loud and badly auto-tuned rap definitely didn't help. It seems to be a fine dining restaurant that is in the wrong part of town. It's right on campus of CofC and seems to be more focused on entertaining the college kids than focusing on the dining experience. Too bad because we definitely need more Indian cuisine in Charleston but we just found the vibe really off-putting. As we were leaving we checked out all the other tables filled with college kids drinking, but definitely not eating. Felt like a fine dining restaurant with a major identity crisis.

Lauren M.

Yelp
spent over $300 on a cold dinner to then be told we "hit our two hour limit" and they "needed the table". it was extremely awkward as we were trying to close our tab yet we were told to leave after one hour and 45 minutes. would not recommend for overpriced meals and bitchy service.
google avatar

Candace M.

Yelp
Needed a last minute dinner reservation and found this one on Open Table. The description was southern with an Indian twist. The patio was nice and temperate on a March evening, but was not very aesthetic. I think the climbing vines and plants would be better in spring. We tried the steak and the paneer tikka. Skip the steak, order the tikka! The society st cocktail was also pleasant. The servers were very polite. Although our experience was fine, it was obvious that others in the area didn't agree. Heard some missed orders and forgotten food. Overall, it was decent experience, but price point was high for decent in Charleston.

Yelp
Ambience was amazing. Bar and bartenders were great, drinks were good. Servers were very friendly and professional. Above are the reasons I gave it a star. HOWEVER, food was extremely disappointing and disgusting for a chef owned place I had Saag, which was extremely under seasoned and bland. I asked for salt and wedges of limes to fix the taste at the table and it actually did the trick FOR THEM. We also ordered steak vindaloo, it was a whole piece of VERY LOW quality steak that's cooked medium in the middle and rest of it was grey color. Floating on a bed of green creamy sauce and covered in the "vindaloo" sauce that wasn't authentic tasting at all. I asked for a little more vindaloo sauce to hopefully bring the steak to taste more, and when we got our bill the small saucer of vindaloo sauce was charged as "open item" at $8. We don't mind paying for good cuisine and we understand time is tough, however, it is inappropriate and unprofessional for chef owned venue like this to charge $34 for a below average steak and then $8 for the tiny sauce. I was also in disbelief that this place consider itself as "Indian" cuisine. Nothing tasted Indian nor even decent. These are just all poor restaurant etiquettes to my opinion. Taking advantage of the fact that there aren't many authentic Indian cuisine in the area, serving predominantly college students, as long as we make the place look social media fancy and dishes plated pretty, who cares about the quality and taste of the food. We left to to bar down the street and had the best chicken wings for $15 right after. Don't waste your time or money here if you are looking for decent food cooked by people who cares about authenticity.

Yelp
Honestly, don't know if we'll go back for the food, maybe we will for cocktails though -- Ambiance: 8/10 -- We loved the chill, intimate vibes inside the restaurant. There were so many hanging plants and beautiful wall murals. We also really enjoyed the music playing in the restaurant, which featured hip hop and rap. The inside of the restaurant was very low lit. We loved the vibes and aesthetic of the restaurant being in our 20s, although I could see older diners not appreciating it as much. Food: 3/10 -- If you enjoy flavorful and spicy Indian food, I'd dine elsewhere, like your hole in the wall takeout place. If typical takeout Indian food is too spicy for you, then you might enjoy Coterie's version. We ordered the Country Chicken Tikka and Tandoori Ribs. Overall, we were pretty disappointed with the food. It was not seasoned well to our standards for Indian food. Pretty bland honestly. The ribs had potential but need more sauce. The slaw the ribs come with doesn't have much flavor. The tikka was not spicy at all and lacked in flavor. Service: 5/10 -- We went on a busy Friday night and were told up front that the small kitchen was backed up. They said that our food orders would likely come out at different times and recommended ordering foods to share due to that. Because they were so honest about this, I can't harshly rate them for the food coming out sporadically. It was quite inconvenient though to eat our tikka without our rice and naan. Overall, we enjoyed our server, who was the bartender, the hostess, and food runners. Cocktails: 9/10 -- I'd say that the place where Coterie really shines is in its eclectic cocktail menu. Lots of different, fancy options. Nice drink presentation. I recommend the Staycation if you like fruity drinks, like a daiquiri.

Yelp
We LOVED it here. Took our son for his 4th birthday. Everything was delicious. The atmosphere is amazing. Service was excellent. My ONLY complaint is the music was explicit and we had a 2 and 4 year old.

Yelp
Coterie is a beautifully dark, modern, yet hip, Indian-American-Southern fused restaurant that's tucked into Warren Street. You can either enter into through their lush planted patio or through their wooden door into this low ceiling area with an amazing bar, with plus teal seats, a nice dining area, but it was the walls that struck me with beautiful painted faces of women and flowers. We ordered drinks from their cocktail menu while we waited for friends. I had the Flaneur, Pueblo viejo reposado tequila, charred grapefruit cordial, lime, & cardamom bitters; it was so refreshing on a hot SC day. My friend had a Manhattan which was served with a signature block of ice with their logo & an okra flower - so cool. Our friends arrived and we dined outdoors, I was skeptical about us but the bartender (who was lovely) said not to worry, they had lots of fans & covered spaces. She was correct! We decided to get lots of things and just share since we all love Indian food. Our waiter told us they tend to make things on the mild side, not what a bunch of UK born people are used to but we asked to kick it up a notch. We ordered Bombay Shrimp & Grits, Country Captain Chicken, Vindaloo Steak, Yellow Lentils, Aaloo Gobi (roasted cauliflower, potatoes, peas in tumeric) Chutney flight (chefs choice of sauces with chapati bread) and off course basmati rice! I have to say the entire experience there was wonderful. The minute I walked in I was totally enthralled with the place. The staff was friendly and accommodating, we actually were 45 mins early for our reservation and they had no issue with us sitting at the bar & actually sat us early. I have been eating Indian food for 40 plus years and although not your typical fare, it was delicious. I did miss not having naan bread & I thought the grits could have had a little more depth (maybe just a little more salt even) If you aren't a fan of Indian food, go for some cocktails, such a cool place, try an appie- be a little adventurous. The ambiance is amazing, staff are wonderful, restaurant has a lounge feel & the outside patio is so inviting, kid friendly too!

Yelp
So this is a place offering Indian food and cocktails with an outdoor patio. I do wonder what their advertising strategy is, as I had to dig online to figure this out, and if their first yelp review is from a guy who doesn't even live here, they haven't exactly reached the local foodies. The Charleston food scene, while robust, does need Indian. This place definitely gave me the sense that it was still finding its way, with hesitant yet nosy service, overly hip music, and it was far quieter than the well-established Greek place next door. But I liked it. A masala ginger beer was richly colored and flavored and went well with lime. I ordered a kale bhel, which is a sort of puffed rice salad. I could see why they'd try to pull this off, but it didn't work for me. The kale was a bit soggy and too bitter, and the other ingredients didn't really work for me. Too many potatoes, but no nuts (I would think the urge to make a modern, Charleston-y version of an Indian dish would be a great excuse to use some peanuts), and it was sweet and hot but without enough complexity on the softer notes of flavor. I've seen kale in Indian food done well, but this wasn't it. I ate it, but I wished I'd gotten okra or something. The dal was much better, smooth, with the sort of warming spices that infused every bite, and just enough fresh garnish on top. In a city with good Indian food, I'd give them a three star review, no question. But I haven't even found any Indian food worth trying in Charleston, so I'm rooting for this place to succeed. I liked the setting, I liked the concept, I don't know where else I'd go around here for dal. I hope they tinker the menu and maybe I'll come back if I visit the area again.

Yelp
A very hip spot located downtown that offers some really great drinks and Indian food. Their happy hour is M-F 4-7 PM featuring fancy and tasty drinks for $7. I really enjoyed the Brown Derby and Sazerac. We ordered a few appetizers and had the main course of vindaloo steak with a side of basmati rice. The dishes were all a bit smaller, so if you're hungry I recommend getting a few things. The waitstaff and atmosphere are what made this place great. The waiters and bar tenders were very open and talkative, especially to our toddler. The music was bumping and the outside weather was superb.

Yelp
The ambience is beautiful and cozy. The drinks are phenomenal- if you want a potent and delicious happy hour this is the spot. The food is very meh and uninspiring, except the paratha. I've had a good amount of indian cuisine and the flavors here just are bland. I wouldn't recommend the food but I would highly recommend the drinks.

Yelp
Never again. I am embarrassed I suggested we eat here. We ordered every vegan and nearly every vegetarian dish on the menu, totaling close to $50pp in the end (WITHOUT any cocktails) and all left feeling hungry. The food took forever, even though we were one of the first tables for dinner. Our server gave us a bs excuse about the kitchen being slammed (I'm pretty sure she just forgot to put our order in to the kitchen or the ticket got lost). I've worked in restaurants for years; when yhe mistake is on your end, you need to own it, not make excuses. Many of the dishes were ridiculously bad, small portions, poorly seasoned and cooked. The worst of all being the vegan saar we waited nearly an hour and a half for. It was- I kid you not- a SINGLE, undercooked carrot in a sauce that tasted like plain pureed tomatoes out of a can... for $28. Looking at the menu now, it was supposed to have some potato thing as part of the dish (it didn't). On top of everything, they make all these saucy dishes and then nickel and dime you on rice- which was a poor quality rice at that. I don't care how gorgeous the patio or interior were. Never again. Service was slow, inattentive, and insincere. I would have loved to share how disappointed we were so we could have talked about it there, but the music was so loud and no one stopped long enough to genuinely ask about our experience, and so I'm leaving this review instead.

Yelp
Awful service. Came in from out of town with relatives from India looking to get some indian food. Made a last minute reservation with open table. First, Called to move reservation to earlier time because of my flight timings. They were not able to accommodate. Okay fine. Realized that the reservation time was too close to my flight time. Called 5 times to cancel reservation but they did not pick up phone. Charged fee. Called again to see if they would waive the fee since most restaurants do waive it. Manager said they couldn't. I have dined many times with open table, and sometimes ive had to cancel but I have never been charged for cancelling even if it's a busy day. I get there is a cancellation fee, but I made a last minute booking, and asked for some good will, because I'd come back next time. I would understand charging me if I didnt call or attempt to cancel, but I did make an attempt! The manager then proceeded to give me a lesson about the service industry. She expects me to be understanding when the restaurant itself was not understanding of my situation! I hope she enjoys that $120, it earned her this review. Seems like bad service is a common theme among the reviews. wish I had read that before booking. it's sad because the menu looks great, but I will NEVER be dining here.

Yelp
I read some of the reviews before going here, but luckily I don't put too much faith in other's opinions. Many were critiquing the place for not being authentic. From what I read, they never claimed to be. So, let me share my experience and what I LOVE about this little spot. Their outside sitting area is a garden oasis in my humble opinion. I half expected to see little fairies any minute flying about. We got to sit by the tree in the back, which is incredible. They had a very quenching drink called simply irresistible that is served with a big cube with their logo on it. It's the details people! So good, I had two! The ribs helped to balance out the drink. The sauce was different, but good. Nice to eat ribs that aren't salty or smothered in a sweet red sauce. All in all, I really don't understand why others are picking this place apart, but don't you listen to them naysayers. Give it a try for yourself. And be sure to hug the tree for me.
