Holy crap y'all we have a passion project artisanal cheese shop that is NOT IN Downtown Charleston! Everybody get yourselves here for the most exquisitely selected local and proximal cheeses, special fruits and breads, thoughtfully selected accoutrements, and the sandwich of your dreams. I pre-ordered the Friday morning Ham and Cheese with special butter, the can't miss according to my sources. Prepaid online and scheduled my pickup time in the narrow window. You don't want to sleep on this place. This is a conclave visit you schedule your day around. I almost lost my husband to the LP jazz here, but they had no seating. You enter to be kindly greeted by Nora. She is lovely and soft-spoken but clearly passionate and engaged with the cheeses and products they purvey. She and her partner Eric are the machines that run this efficient, welcoming, perfect cheese and sandwich nook. It is super-special and I only tell you because we need to support them and keep this beautiful oasis of quality cheeses and specialty sandwich service alive. I had read about the cheeses on their detailed website prior, and knew what I definitely wanted to try and most likely buy. Nora was so generous, inviting, and descriptive she had me trying things I didn't know I needed to. In the end we got a great variety but all cows' milk by chance or taste, which she found interesting. So perhaps next time, more sheep's or goat's milk. I am also a pimento cheese snob and theirs made my mind open and ideas go crazy. I will bring Nora and Eric some of mine to enjoy but I do now feel pedestrian in comparison. Both types have their place, and they may have stepped up my game. They also have select sodas, wines, sparkling wines, and other wonders chosen with care. This is my new favorite store. Go there and it will be yours too!

this is the coolest place of all time. if you like cheese and have a budget, come here asap. the service is truly incredible, they take such good care of you. they also play records and have such a chill vibe. the prices are also very fair

Holy crap they have a well curated selection of great cheese. You can sample before buying. Very cool collection of other foods that would be great for parties. THE place if you want a cheese board for a party. Super friendly and knowledgeable.

Cutest owners with a big big heart & the most delectable cheese selection from the southeast. Have been a regular at their stall at the Johns Island farmers market but finally made it to this very very cute location. They also carry my fav artisanal plum jams from this very nice Mom & daughter duo in Seattle

Great cheese selection and excellent service in store and when we see them at the markets. They have a few other fun items to choose from too: candy, olive, anchovies and more. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

Went with my wife yesterday and the place was amazing! The staff is very knowledgeable and so friendly. They helped educate us on all the different types of cheese and helped us make the perfect selection. The cheese was outstanding and their homemade bread is out of this world. Highly recommend and please support your local small businesses, these guys are amazing!

Delicious! We have been going to the James Island Farmer's Market and the store regularly for cheeses, bread and sandwiches. Everything Eric and Nora make is fresh and delicious. Great stop in James Island before the beach for sandwiches but get there early because they always have a line and sell out quickly. One of my favorite foodie spots. Highly recommend!

UPDATE: their address IS now a shop. But as of this writing the hours are pretty limited- just Friday and Saturday from 11am to 4 pm! Also- they have slightly changed their name from 'Counter Cheese Caves' to 'Counter Cheese Mongers' Must be a story there hahaha

The owners, Eric and Nora, are the absolute best. Always kind and helpful, greeting everyone with a smile. Theirs is a quaint little shop tucked away just off Rivers Ave with an amazing assortment of regional cheeses, scrumptious sandwiches, and other tasty goodies. If you want the good stuff, this is the place to go.

Wonderful little cheese store! Great selection of regional cheeses. A bit pricey, but perfect for company or great occasions. I didn't get one, but they do have sandwiches too!

This is the best sandwich I've had in a long time. Perfectly crisp bread, plenty of pesto, and delicious, smoky turkey. We were really impressed by the price point since it's rare to get a sandwich in Charleston that is less than $15-20. We sampled some of the cheese with the owner, who gave us a breakdown of each cheese as well as the handmade stamps he makes for the cheese cards. Already planning my sammie for next weekend

Got two sandwiches from Counter Cheese Caves at the Sea Island Farmers Market. SO GOOD. My son ate it up. Then bread was chewy, the cheese and meat were good quality, and the flavors were . Would absolutely visit them again.

Just amazing cheese. It's not cheap but who wants cheap cheese? This is high quality, tasteful, flavorful cheese that is so so good. Absolutely a great place to buy cheese.

I ordered a cheese for someone as a Valentine's Day gift and was so so impressed! The packaging was beautiful, with tons of little aesthetic flares that make it perfect for gifting. The cheese was also very cold when it arrived, nestled in between some reusable ice packs, even after a couple hours of being in my apartment's mail room. I also had the option to pick what day I'd like the cheese to arrive at checkout and it came right on time! Can't recommend this enough, worth every penny.
