A Midtown Steakhouse Closes Following Two-Alarm Fire | Eater NY

"A new Upper East Side outpost of Steve Ells’s sandwich shop arrives at 1302 First Avenue at East 70th Street on October 14, serving breakfast and lunch sandwiches priced around $16–$19, with options like the Baron (roast beef, white cheddar, watercress, horseradish mayo), the Smokeshow (house-roasted chicken, barbecue sauce, triple jalapeños), and the vegetarian Gigante; it will be the brand’s fourth NYC location." - Melissa McCart

Chef Alexia Duchêne’s Grub Street Diet

"I order the “Smoke Show” sandwich from Counter Service and split it with Ronan — it has chicken, jalapeños, cheddar, and a red‑cabbage slaw and is quite spicy." - Paula Aceves, Ryan Inzana

I went with my mom and we had a great experience. We ordered the Green Goddess Chicken and The Baron. Both were absolutely delicious. The quality of the bread and the ingredients were outstanding. The Crispy potato was out of this world, so crispy and tasted so yum. The sesame seed cookie is the best cookie I have tried in my life. The counter service team was so attentive and friendly.

I’ve been twice now and I’ve tried the diplomat and the green goddess. The bread is very good, not too hard, and toasted nicely (i.e. the bread isn’t so hard that it cuts the roof of your mouth. IYKYK). For the price point I would expect the sandwiches to be a bit larger (with more fillings) because the sandwiches are quite expensive. I thought there would be more meat in the sandwiches currently it feels like a lot of lettuce however both sandwiches I got were very tasty. And since they just opened, maybe they’re figuring out portioning. Either way great new sandwich option in the area. There aren’t a ton of places to get great sandwiches there. Will def be back to try the other sandwiches. Also will say the staff are SUPER friendly and helpful which is always nice.

Google
Tremendous sandwich! Just crispy enough on the outside, so you don't get gum-rip. Tastes great - tried the vegetarian The Gigante and Green Goddess Chicken Club. Both really tasty, can't go wrong. Also tried Counter Service Crispy Potato, and it's as they describe on their menu: for some it's like a potato chip, for others a crispy hash brown, for me it was simply good. Staff is friendly and welcoming. I love the open kitchen style where you can see sandwiches being prepared from start to finish. The diner style seating area with pictures of other eras. Great! And the 80s New York phone booths holding order displays are an excellent throwback. I'll be returning for more!

I have pretty high standards for sandwiches and this was absolutely fantastic. The bread was especially outstanding. I got The Baron. Would definitely return to get it again.

I loved it. The food was and the staff were all super nice. It took around 5 minutes for my sandwich to be made and the environment is very classy. My only minor complaint was that it was a bit hard to find where to order however a kind staff member (the manager I believe) quickly noticed my confusion and directed me where to go. I will be eating more sandwiches here.

Google
I had the roast beef sandwich, which was outstanding, as was the fried potato and the pickles. But is it really worth TWICE what you might pay for a sandwich elsewhere? That's the question. At least give us a free side of pickles. The definitely got the old school NYC deli decor right though with the vinyl bench, bent cane chairs, fluorescent lights and tile floor.

Freshly toasted hero bread is the key ingredient @ this place. Enjoy the nostalgic yet edgy taste of the sandwiches in a yesteryear ambiance in a forward thinking ordering system.

Google
The sandwiches here are really good. I came for the first time and got a green goddess chicken club and a salted chocolate chip cookie. Both were excellent, so I ended up coming back with my husband 2 weeks later. We got the bahn mi and the cortese this time. Again, both were very, very good. The bahn mi is especially yummy. Lots of pickled carrots and radishes and fresh herbs. But the best part of every sandwich I had here is the bread. For the banh mi, I am VERY picky about bread, and this is the best bahn mi bread I've found in NYC so far. But the bread for every sandwich was excellent. Well-constructed, good portions. Fair pricing for good food. Chocolate chip cookie is also excellent. Got that a second time, as well. Would definitely recommend this spot. Will be a staple on the lunch rotation.

Yelp
Counter Service is a sandwich shop/chain started by the team behind Chipotle. They pride themselves of their fresh ingredients and how they make everything in house. I got to try the new steak and mushroom melt which was really tasty! The steak and melty cheese were well seasoned with their mayo and other sauces, and overall a great classic combo. I did taste the mushrooms but wish it was more prominent in the sandwich. I'm typically not a huge fan of banana peppers but their grilled version worked in the sandwich! It brought a little bit of sweetness in the midst of the meat and cheese. Next time I really want to try the green goddess chicken club and the gigante. I got myself a sweet treat with the brown butter chocolate chip cookie and it was fire! The cookie dough part itself was good, but the dark chocolate was better! Enjoyed the chew, crisp, chocolate, and dash of salt. Definitely want to try the sugar cookie because it has tahini and a bunch of sesame on top! This location has 3 kiosks for you to order from; it was pretty easy to navigate. There was some table/booth seating in the back. There is a screen that shows the status of orders. Food came out quick during lunch time on a weekday. FYI they don't have the hospital staff discount like many of the restaurants in the area but they are working on it!

Yelp
This place just recently opened near my job so I gave it a shot! In ordered "The Baron" sandwich (roast beef & cheese). It was amazing! My entire meal cost $27. For that price, this better be the tastiest sandwich ever. It was amazing! The cheese, the veggies, the horseradish mayo, everything was very tasty. The bread was perfectly baked! Super thin toasty crunch with a fluffy interior! Definitely give it a go! For management: I recommend offering soups! A nice $4 clam chowder would have paired perfectly!

Yelp
I'm glad that they have "service" in their name. Because it's NOT just another sandwich shop with great food. But it's that, too! I ordered from a kiosk to take out and Benjamin, behind the counter, refused a tip! "We don't accept tips," he said. But great service is to be rewarded. So, Benjamin, you earned this FIVE STAR review with your great service! (I would have given you five stars even if you would have accepted the tip.) But great food AND great service...? This store and everyone on the team tonight gets five stars! My only suggestion -- change the name to "Great Counter Service". You deserve it. And thank you.

Yelp
Great addition to the UES. 2 of us wanted to try 3 different sandwiches. The bread was very good. Ranked in order Green Goddess Chicken club. Could have used more green goddess spread. 4.5/5 The Cortese. Wish there was more salsa verde. Didnt really taste it. Would have been super good if it had more. 4.25/5 Banh Mi. The veggies were good. Meat was slightly gamey. Could have used more pate or some type of butter spread. 4/5 Wife and I felt like everything needed more sauce. If so I think everything would have been a 5/5 -Anyways, they make good sandwiches

Yelp
Counter Service is a very nice addition to the neighborhood. They're serving up tasty sandwiches. Clean open kitchen. Mostly take out with small seating area. Limited menu serving up quality ingredients with tasty results. Had the Baron (roast beef) and it was good, the beef was well done would have liked it rare as pics on the menu and it lacked horseradish flavor. High quality food, yes. Wallet friendly, no. But not many places are these days.

Yelp
I love that Counter Service offers whole subs, early in the morning! Ordering is super easy, and I love their little 'telephone booth' design that framed the ordering kiosks! We stopped by to grab some sammies to-go: +The Baron - with roasted beef, aged white cheddar, watercress, and horseradish mayo +and, The Gigante - with braised chard, kale, white beans, broccoli rabe, fontina, Parm, and provolone; a great veggie option Service was friendly, and the space was bright; there is seating inside for those who would like to dine-in. Staff were pretty efficient, and we received our made-to-orders in awesome time. +made-to-order sandwiches +fun 'phone booth' ordering kiosks +friendly service

Yelp
Popped in after we tried their amazing sugar cookies they were handing out during the marathon and so glad we did! Cute ambiance designed like a retro sandwich shop. Got their egg and cheese and their roast beef and both sandwiches were delicious, also got the monkey bread and pretzels which were really great as well! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I got the diplomat. Pretty good sandwich, unlike anything I've had before. The bread was fresh and delicious. Very small and pricey but otherwise good.

Yelp
I opted to order a pick up, "fan fave" - green goddess chicken club. Unfortunately, all I got was 99.9% green goddess and a speck of chicken and no bacon. The cookie was solid though.

Yelp
Extremely friendly staff, decent food but music way too loud to talk to anyone or get any work done on your laptop. This area needs a quieter place where hospital workers can talk to their coworkers and other professionals can make work calls without music blaring at club-level volume. If they reduce the volume by half, they'd still create the vibe they're going for and make this otherwise friendly and comfortable place more user-friendly.

Yelp
Horrible! Criminally overpriced with poor quality and weird sandwich combinations, trying to be chic, but miss the Mark in every way! You can call lettuce, water crest all you want but it's still lettuce and not worth $20 on a small roast beef sandwich,go down 70th to York grill for a real sandwich & skip this clown show!

Yelp
The diplomat is the single greatest sandwich of all time. The toasted bread the ingredients were to perfection

Elisa S.

Yelp
I got the green goddess chicken sandwich and while the overall taste as well as the bread was delicious, there was barely any chicken in it, like barely. My sandwich certainly didn't look anything like the previous pictures posted....previous pictures look like they had significantly more chicken . The sandwich's are pricey and for what's being charged there needs to be a lot more chicken/meat . I must say aside from that the people who work there are friendly and wonderful.
