SF Marriott Hotel Restaurant Workers Join Thousands on Strike | Eater SF

"At the Courtyard San Francisco Downtown, I learned its restaurant workers are among those picketing as part of a nearly 2,500-strong strike over wages and benefits; management says the hotel and its dining outlets will remain open while the union continues to press its demands." - Janelle Bitker

Hidden gem! Sure the area can be a little sketchy and the walls are thin however the staff is 11/10, and everything is new and clean. As a woman traveling alone, I always felt safe. The neighborhood is quite convenient: movie theater next door, Starbucks across the street, transit outside the door. The lobby is so charming and cozy. Well equipped for coworking or lounging while waiting for a flight. The lobby market is open 24/7 and the attached diner has very convenient hours. This is one of my main stays for business travel. Exceptional value and very enjoyable.

Good hotel with a strong turn of the century feel. Only one elevator it seems, but that didn’t turn out to be any problem. Rooms were surprisingly big. Lobby is small but very nice. If you need to stay here because you need to be close to the hospital across the street, there’s really no better option. Plus there’s two good restaurants nearby - Mel’s downstairs and Tommy’s Joynt across the street. Staff was very helpful and accommodating with some of our odd requests. Would recommend.

What a great experience! The front desk staff were all very friendly and pleasant. I felt secure and safe throughout my stay, which really matters in San Francisco. My room was spotless on arrival, and housekeeping kept it that way every single day. The lobby is beautiful and such a comfortable place to hang out or even get some work done on my laptop—it really adds to the overall experience. I also loved having Mel’s Diner right in the hotel—super convenient for a couple of meals. The washer and dryer onsite were another great perk that made my stay easier. The hotel itself is genuinely beautiful—possibly the nicest Courtyard by Marriott I’ve ever stayed at. As a Marriott Titanium member, I stay at a lot of properties, and I truly think if this hotel upgraded their linens and towels, it could easily fit into the Design Hotels or Autograph Collection portfolio. It really stands out above the rest. From now on, this will be my go-to hotel in San Francisco over the larger Marriott Marquis or the Westin on Market Street. A+ across the board. Thank you for an awesome stay!

Upon arrival, parking is funny. You pull into first entrance it tells you to go, nope. They redirect you to second. Parking lot is tight but underground. So felt safe parking. Gated. Okay… here it gets tricky. You have to walk up stairs to next level ( don’t plan to hold all of your stuff at once) no elevator. Then once you’re in it’s like a maze to lobby. Check in was easy, staff friendly. There’s no bar or restaurant, instead you have to go to the ATTACHED restaurant Mel’s. Typical diner food. Full bar. Not what I wanted overall. Staff at diner had zero customer service. Rooms are boxes which is a given downtown, but they had to frost the windows to block the crappy view. Housekeeping has it clean, however, they knocked on my door day of check out 45 min prior to check out asking when I was leaving. Darn. Also zero customer service. Location is sketch too, so look out for that on you consideration. Overall, wouldn’t return.

The lobby door is secure, front desk staff welcoming and engaging. Our room looks fresh, clean, and comfortable. It's pretty spacious and well lit. Restaurants are nearby.| It's a great room, can't hear the street noise too much.

This is not your typical Courtyard by Marriott and we love it! It’s a uniquely San Francisco experience and gives you a feeling of stepping back in time. The Courtyard by Marriott at 1001 Van Ness in San Francisco is a very distinctive property that truly blends historic charm with modern comfort. Set in a beautifully restored 1908 building, the hotel features many elegant architectural details like ceiling medallions, decorative molding, cozy window seats, original deep closets, and some rooms with generously sized chairs that give the rooms a warm, classic feel. The lobby is equally inviting, with a refined historic ambiance and comfort, and both elevators and graceful staircases lead to the upper floors. We very much appreciate the secure gated parking lot—a rarity in the city—and the convenience of having Mel’s Kitchen right downstairs for delicious American meals. The staff is exceptionally welcoming and helpful, making every stay feel personal. It'slocated on Van Ness, the artery of the City, it's located minutes away from all of the great attractions of San Francisco, too. This Courtyard by Marriott is highly recommended if you enjoy staying in a truly historic building. Check it out!

The hotel staff is probably the best staff I’ve seen in a hotel. They are attentive and will treat you very well. Especially M who works on weekends. The hotel rooms are very clean and it is well located.

Google
Worst hotel on earth. I was given an average rate of $193 but was charged $479 for one night. I have been a Marriott member for over 25 years and never experienced such unprofessional treatment from staff. The van ness location is terrible and has very few restaurants near by and zero shopping. If I knew I would be charged $479 , not including the $67 tourist fee, for one night I would have stayed at the st Regis. STAY AWAY

Yelp
So the location isn't great due to the number of street people but no issue with the hotel itself. Not many places to walk to so thankfully there is Uber. The hotel is a cute historic hotel. If you go please know that the entry is not handicap accessible as there are stairs and no other option to get from the street to the lobby. Also, no door person so they either have to buzz you in or you use your door key. Mels Kitchen is right next door and they serve a wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinner. Starbucks right across the street.

Yelp
This is great hotel in the middle of so much with a decent bar and restaurant. The service is good. It's a bit weird in the layout. It's hard to know where to park and even on my second go-round I had to call the hotel to figure it out. However, the parking is gated and feels very secure. That's huge! It's a bit of a maze to get to your room. I don't recall what it was originally but they have redone it really beautifully. It's decorated with four repeating portraits of historic SF people, one of whom I really connect with. It's cool. The first time I stayed here, I must have had a suite. It was super plush with views and and so much room. I was provided this room so I have no idea as to cost, but I highly recommend this. The second time, I was so excited to stay again but had a teeny tiny room with a window, but a view of other tall buildings. The lighting was pretty dark - could have used another lamp. Nevertheless, the room was clean and cozy and I'd stay again.

Yelp
Booked a room here for the family, as we were in town for a wedding. Arrived and because there's really no parking, and with the car break ins on the rise in SF. We opted to just go with the valet parking which is $70/night, which is really expensive but it was the best option for us. Checked in smoothly and the lady at the counter offered us all some bottle waters, before we went up to our rooms. We had the 2 full bed option, which worked for us since we were only in town for the night and only needed modest accommodations. The bathroom was really small, so it makes getting all 4 of us ready at once interesting. The sirens and car alarms going off at various times of the night was noted by my boys. I was able to sleep through it however, but it was worrisome for my youngest. Pillows were also not good at all, and didn't do much for support. My girlfriend woke up having slight neck issues from it. Before attending the wedding which was in the morning, I decided to check out the breakfast here which opens at 7am. Eventually ordering: 3 breakfast sandwiches -$17.95/ each 2 sides of hash browns - $5/each 2 fruit parfaits - $9.95/each 1 Starbucks Cappuccino - $5.95 Total...$103! WOW! Staff at the Café (Café Maurice) were nice however, but it didn't make up for how expensive the food was there. We needed the extended check out since regular checkout is 8am, and we were just leaving for the wedding and wouldn't be back tilid afternoon. My girlfriend set up the late check out the night we arrived which was 6p. But we had to have our car out of the valet by 4p, or would be charged another night for parking. So we out checked out at 4pm and my car was waiting out front a few minutes later. Overall: Not bad for a modest level hotel in SF, unfortunately things are just more expensive here. Decent room, small bathroom, breakfast is available, but expect to spend a bit. If you're looking to feed multiple people. The valet is a nice option, but again it's really the only option available and it's really expensive.

Yelp
Like most I've stayed away from SF as of late due to warnings of increased crime and car break ins. Having that in mind we chose to stay fairly close to the bridge in case we needed to leave early. My stay this weekend completely changed my mind and I'm already planning my next visit. We stayed one night for a concert and chose the courtyard due to the location. While they don't offer valet, we were able to self park in a very secure guest only parking lot. The parking lot had direct access to the check in lobby so we didn't have to walk on the busy street with our bags. The hotel is absolutely stunning and staff was friendly at check in. The hallways did have a smell of cigarette smoke but once we were in our room we couldn't smell it. The double room itself was on the smaller side but it was clean and aesthetically pleasing. We were able to get an Uber easily and waited inside the lobby, when we returned in the late night from our concert they had security at the door. That added to the element of feeling safe which is so important! In the morning we made our way down to Mel's kitchen for breakfast - a diner that you have direct entry access from the hotel. Again, we loved that we didn't need to leave the hotel for anything other than our concert and then to go home. 10/10. This hotel had everything. If you're looking for a safe place to stay you won't go wrong here, we're definitely returning.

Yelp
This place is awesome if you know what you're getting into. The parking is limited. Just assume ahead of time there is none and that you'll need to find your own parking What you really should do is find a park-and-ride and take the NUMI bus or come in using a Uber or Lyft. There is no drop off spot. You pull over, put on the hazards, and throw everyone out the car before the light changes. But that's where the negative ends. Staff is nice. Housekeeping is nice. Rooms are awesome. It's a real experience and with the hotel being on the East West border between the Tenderloin and The Fillmore and Geary being on the North South border between the Fillmore and Japan Town, there is A LOT to experience. Also, this hotel is right between the Fillmore Theatre and the Bill Graham Civic Center. You can go West down Geary for one or South down Van Ness to the other.

Yelp
Wanted to give this place 4 stars, but the flaws knocked it down to 3. Pros They take security seriously which is especially good for solo travelers Front desk is helpful Recently renovated in 2019 so it doesn't feel like an old hotel for the most part Cons I could hear my neighbors so the walls are fairly thin My hot water never got all that hot Also my shower door was really weird and to get out of the shower, I had to pull the door towards me which meant that the steam semi sealed the door and the handle was slippery so I was scared I'd be trapped until I managed to push it loose Parking is super tight and space is really limited so if you go out at night, you'll likely lose your spot Wouldn't be my first choice, but it's definitely more affordable in both room and parking than other places

Yelp
These guys are crooks. Surprising that they can keep the Marriott Courtyard affiliation. They saw me coming. My brother had a stroke and I was at the Sutter Trauma Center across the street. I was at the trauma center all day and was too tired to go home. Got to their front desk about 8:00 PM. Told them my situation. They told me that there was a convention in town and that the rates were really high. (There is always a convention in town) Charged me $457 for the night. See attached. My wife went online and saw that she could have got the room for $189 for the night. The front desk did not want to give me a receipt for fear of what I would do with it. Stay away from this place.

Yelp
This location is surrounded by homeless camps , graffiti, people doing drugs at all hours of the day and night , it's not safe to go for walks , and it's not safe to park your car outside on the streets . We made massive mistake by booking at this location . The building has been remodel , but it's very old , not classy but not good old !! Inside parking is super tight , not enough for anything bigger than a midsize suv . Our room had a window facing a wall , my experience here was very disappointing and regrettable. The customer service here was bad as well , lots of attitude with a tall side order of carelessness for the paying customer. Do yourself a favor and stay away from down town San Francisco, book your trip elsewhere .

Yelp
This property is in a terrible neighborhood and they do not have accomodations to allow one to quickly unload passengers and luggage before parking and checking in. I arrived and was told over an intercom that the property parking lot was full and that I should find street parking nearby so that I could check in and then they would direct me to another parking site. There was no street parking available nearby, and if there had been parking available, using it would put your property and welfare in danger. There was a man outside the front of the building with his pants around his ankles, playing with his penis...what a nice welcome for the family. The streets around the property were full of groups loitering that probably would not be up for model citizen of the year. If you left anything in a vehicle, it would likely be gone before you returned to your vehicle. I have seen this property described as "quaint" and "charming". It appears they misspelled "Taint" and "Alarming". There were no signs of hotel security or SFPD presence. This area has been turned over to the people of the street who care nothing about a civil society. Stay away!!! I made the 90 mile drive home rather than stay here.

Yelp
Ok so the area isn't the best. You're in SF... what area is free of houseless etc.? No where! So let's get past what they establishment can't control. I was greeted at the front desk by PK. She notified me of a free room upgrade. Check in was easy and painless. The room was a good size and clean. The bed was comfy and the pillows were nice. I stayed in room 211 and the view for people watching was nice. Pk helped me find a local place about 16 Mins walking distance, I needed a good iced coffee and didn't want the Starbucks that was right next door. I'm in the city and wanted something I didn't have regular access too. She suggested a great place and so I brought her back some doughnut holes. I didn't get his name but the gentleman that was at the front desk for the night shift was polite and helpful as well. I would for sure stay here again. Thank you PK and staff.

Yelp
I will definitely keep this place in mind the next time I stay in the city. The location is very convenient and decently priced. Pros include security and parking. Parking is offered in a gated lot for $49, park yourself. First come first serve, however there were plenty of spaces with room. The entire hotel is access card only, including all entrances and the elevator. I liked this because the location can feel quite unsafe but the hotel was secured. Staff was very friendly, and they offer early check in if they did not book the room the night before. The hotel and rooms are very nice, newly modeled and decorated. The lobby has plenty of area to sit and a small work station. There is also a restaurant that you can access through the lobby, Mels Kitchen. As well as the restaurant there is a 24 hour convenience shop with light snacks and essentials. The rooms are up to date, clean, and have mini fridges as well as a coffee station. Only downside I would say is the size of the room. We stayed in a 2 bed double room and it was fine for the time we were there, however I could imagine it being more of an issue if we stayed for a few nights.

Yelp
Excellent customer service. Clean room. Beautiful decoration. The only thing bad for this hotel that is the city responsibility the quantity of homeless around outside de street. The Mayor is not taking any responsibility of cleaning the area and helping reduce homelessness.

Yelp
My stay here is the worst! Front desk named Jamea is so rude and unprofessional, She is. not accommodating at all. It seems that she is not the right person to be in the front desk. It is not only me but my other family members also noticed her attitude. I have never encountered someone who is as bad as she is with regards to customer seevice. If there is a zero star I would give that. She made my stay very uncomfortable and upset. Jamea and Muskan should have a smile in their face and not tell customers wrong information about their parking. I felt discriminated and disrespected as a guest. This all started because of parking spot! The parking is so bad, it is hard to find the gate entrance for the lower level parking and the first level parking. There is no clear instruction which gate to access for the first level and lower level. Jamea did not let us park on the first floor vacant disabled parking spot, which we have the placard. When I asked her why, she said that the parking is reserved for the guest that is already checked in and that guest is in and out and it is first come first serve basis. There is alao so much parking left on the first floor. as I stayed in the lobby, I overheard someone checking in and she parked in that disabled spot. the guest mentioned the make of the car and it is the car that is parked on the spot that I was asking Jamea if we can park there. So I wondered why was she allowed to park there, I checked in before and what happened to what Jamea said to me about first come first serve and the guest was in and out? After I overheard that, I approached Muskan who chrcked in the lady and I tolf her the situation that I was told it is a first come first serve as what Jamea said. take note Muskan was there when Jamea was telling me that. Then Muskan said, that the guest will move her car, she will just unload. Guest what, the guest did not move the car. They basically let her park there and not me. She checked in after mw. That guest was also looking for parking at the same time we were looking for parking that is why I know I came first. So Jamea basically told me wrong info about the first come first serce 8 o'clock basis and that particular parking reserved for someone that is in and out. of the hotel already. That was completely untrue. I dont know what does she have against me. I felt discriminated and treated wrongfully. I have high respect for Marriott but she ruined it. My stay here is the worst. I will never stay here. She did not provide good customer service and she made me feel stupid foe believing her. and when I confronted her she has the guts to argue with me. I already escalated this with corporate and I can't wait to talk to the manager tomorrow. She does not belong in the front. She's no use. A front desk person should know how to have a pleasing pesonality that can help guests and knows how to de escalate.

Yelp
Stayed here with a group of friends in 3 separate rooms Nov 5-6 for a night for my birthday weekend trip in SF. too much color throughout the hotel why is everything teal and dark lighting?? So much stairs too. parking is safe it's gated and underground. beds and rooms are comfy clean and nice, perfect temperature and good soaps etc. only reason for 4 stars is front desk rude lady with long hair so much attitude trying to check us in when we explicitly said we only had 1 car and separate reservations. We asked if we could all be on the same floor but figured the answer would be no, which it was, but she practically screamed it into our faces. Lol. Unprofessional.

Yelp
This is a quirky building- cool decor, vintage-feel to it- and the room is nice, although rather small. The bed is cozy and the shower is hot and powerful. That said, it is located in a tricky part of the city which means you can't quite get out and walk around safely due to people on the street coming up to you and, for me anyway, threatening me and yelling at me. I am here for work and my clinic is literally 600 feet from the front door, so basically I have just been going from hotel to clinic and back all week. I have a car for the week, but the parking lot is so oddly caged up that I don't think I can safely get in/out- and I am not even sure there would be a spot for my car if I got back at night. I was hoping to go out tonight and take my car, and come back around 10:30 PM, but I am afraid the lot would be full and then I'd have nowhere to park. Oh, also parking is $49 a day! I didn't realize that when I booked the hotel. I definitely would have picked a different hotel. No pool either, and no bar or restaurant on site. There is a "Mel's Diner" next door and you can access that through a door at the hotel, and that has a bar, so you don't have to go outside to get to Mel's. I ate there twice and it was good, but very pricy for a diner, about $30 for an entree and Diet Coke. I won't stay here again due to parking price and location, but it has been comfortable and the front desk staff are really nice.

Yelp
The hotel it self it's so nice and welcoming The location is terrible, lots of homeless around, be prepared and have an open mind when you book this hotel. It's not your usual that's for sure. I wish it's location was better The rooms aren't that dark if you like a dark room, curtains don't do its job Beds are comfortable Rooms are big enough for two but just for few days I would stay here if it was more than two nights. Everything is luxurious When you walk in feels like you are in another country. The interior design is beautiful thru out the hotel. The guess services are nice too, that always helps. Happy hunting.!

Yelp
I am horribly sad to write this email regarding my current/recent stay. SO many things are wrong with this establishment starting with the parking situation. The marriott website states that this hotel has onsite parking/inside parking. What it doesn't state is that most visitors likely will NOT get parking and that the next nearest parking situation is blocks away. After being told there was "no room at the inn" at least as far as parking goes....I drove around 30 minutes looking for indoor parking. As a single, woman traveler, unfamiliar with this area of San Francisco I was scared to death to have to find my way, by myself at 10:30PM, back to the hotel. When I arrived at the hotel I began checking in. There was no apology, no offer of hospitality, not even an offer of a bottle of water from the front desk staff. As I was handing my credit card and id to the desk clerk I accidentally "tossed" my ID to the clerk and it landed on her computer. It was at that point that night security, Mike Melidez (?) with Epic Security, began threatening me. He threatened my personal safety by threatening to kick me out at 10:30 at night. I apologized to the desk clerk and he continued to threaten me and say he would be calling the SF police. I have been a loyal Marriott customer for years and this is the first time I've ever felt unsafe at a Marriott property. What's worse is that I was made to feel unsafe by an actual "security" guard. The utter lack of respect, not to mention hospitality, is unforgiveable. Also the hotel is in a VERY unsafe area of San Francisco and was epically mis-represented by the online photos. Front desk staff was neither accommodating nor at all worried about guest safety. In fact I'm not sure whether or not I'll be raped in my bed tonight.

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE WILL CHARGE YOU EXTRA FOR 'DEEP CLEANING' Amid a pandemic. Bruh, how you work in hospitality and lack the ability to talk to people?! This place was horrible. Nickle and dime you, then give you attitude when you ask for justification. The front manager, Rosie, acted facetiously when she claimed it would be her "pleasure" to send me pictures "in color" to justify additional charges to my stay, and then waited over a week to mail me anything. My mom cleaned hotel rooms when she got to this country- I've worked in restaurants for years as a cook and butcher... never have I been as rude as Rosie was with my patrons and i in handling something so simple. We left NO PERMANENT DAMAGE OR STAINS and piled our trash neatly, and were charged for an additional night of parking(we only needed one) and were charged $250 in extra cleaning fees. The attached pictures were used as justification. Do you not normally make the beds?! Do you not normally throw out the trash?! In a pandemic?! Charging extra for "deep cleaning"? Wow. It's obvious the problem is not the staff but the managers who instruct their employees.

Yelp
I absolutely loved my stay here! While I was only here one night, next time I'm in SF, I know where I'm staying. The staff was accommodating and friendly from check-in to check out. The rooms are quite spacious for San Francisco, but the decor is what I fell in love with! Overnight parking is $39. The staff gave us a recommendation to park across the street at the nearby hospital, but we couldn't figure out the hospital situation. There is a 24 Hour Fitness one block away on Van Ness and Post Street that offers overnight public parking for a lot less.

Yelp
The hotel is beautiful! It's clean and feels luxurious. Only bad thing about this place is the parking. You're not allowed to park on the first floor you're supposed to go to the basement. You have to get out of your car to press the gate to get in. They have us a remote but it didn't work. Other than that the hotel was clean staff was nice. The room was a decent size.

Yelp
Service is great. Lobby is beautifully decorated with some spaces to work, which would be great for business travelers. The rooms are just small, especially compared to other Marriott properties around the city. You've got a bed, a TV, a nicely renovated shower, no view even with the upgraded king room... that's about it. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to someone wanting to spend a lot of time in the room but if you are just coming back to sleep, it works. It's also on the edge of the tenderloin district so just be careful walking around in that district at night if you are alone. That being said, location is great as there are some amazing restaurants nearby and you can walk to Japantown as well! Also heads up that they sometimes run out of parking in their garage so you might need to park in a different garage nearby.

Highly recommend. Terrific rates ($160/ night ish), amazingly beautiful hotel... quiet and clean. Granted our stay was short and sweet, and we were upgraded to the opal suite on the 2nd floor (so I can't speak for the regular rooms), as I had my cousin who travels for work (aka lots of points) book the hotel for us... this will be our go to hotel in the city. Central located in the city, on the edge of the tenderloin which can be a bit shady, you're still just a few blocks from Nob Hill. The area was familiar as we used to stay at Cathedral Hill (kitty corner) during my old Cal-Pacific Medical Center stays. Tommy's Joint is across the street, Mel's diner n the first floor. Not to mention the ease of delivery from grub hub, uber eats etc. There is a fitness center with the hotel as well, though I didn't go look at it. The hotel feels glamorous and luxurious, I loved the fresh take and modernization of the 1920s vibe. Only downfall is the price of valet ($67) But its SF, you pay for parking anywhere, besides the valet's both at night and the am, were so damn friendly and helpful. Check out the pics.

Yelp
This hotel was a very nice hotel. The lobby area was really nice and the rooms were as well. The decor is unique and creates a welcoming environment. The front desk staff and the valet were extremely friendly and accommodating for us. The hallways were almost like a maze, you could get lost in there. This hotel is attached to Mels restaurant which was convenient to grab quick food. This location is also a good location and is very close to the Regency Ballroom. A great place to stay if you are attending a concert there. The only complaints I have are the walls are very thin. I was able to hear our neighbors all through the night as well as the people above us. Also the pullout couch was horrendously uncomfortable. We enjoyed our stay and if I wasn't the one stuck on the pullout couch I may have enjoyed it more.

Yelp
The Courtyard by Marriott Downtown/van Ness gave us quite a pleasant surprise when we checked in recently. It's not a neighborhood I'm very familiar with so I didn't know what to expect but really, in SF you never know what to expect these days:-). Well this place is a quite unexpected mix of stylish modernism and old world elegance. Those themes come together and really work well at a chain mostly known for the clean but generic corporate look. Though centrally located ( close to Cathedral Hill and Japantown) it really isn't near any of the things casual visitors/tourist might like to see. And, unfortunately, these days in SF taking long walks from one part of town to another can be a fairly unpleasant experience. Nonetheless, the hotel has some limited parking that's easy to access and there are usually plenty of Uber/Lyft drivers around. There is a somewhat upscale diner attached to the property that looked pretty good ( though we didn't get a chance to try it). Other dining options seemed sparse in the neighborhood. Rooms are average size but clean and with full amenities and nicely decorated. Security is quite good with card key access at all exterior doors at most times as well as at the gated parking lots. Overall a really nice place to stay if you need to be in that part of town :-)

Yelp
This is a newly renovated hotel as I read in some reviews and yes, its location is in a not so nice part of the city but I'm sure you'll forget that once you're inside!!! This hotel is immaculately clean and the smell from the hallway to our room is heavenly! Beds are comfy and service was fast. When I requested for dental kit, it came right away. Staff were friendly and attentive! Just be ready to pay for valet parking if you don't want to self-park your car away from the building. I don't know how far is the self-parking lot because we did valet, it's safer. There are good restaurants walkable from the hotel which is a big plus. There's Mel's Kitchen inside the hotel, my son tried the fried chicken and bacon but was really salty so I guess it's better to eat out if you're on a low-salt diet. If I need to stay on SF again, I will definitely book this hotel again for its cleanliness and good service... just not so much for location.

Yelp
I have stayed in many hotels around Downtown SF and this one was a great find! Upgraded clean rooms, lobby, friendly staff. Mel's kitchen is a great place to catch good meals. If not, you can walk around and find other choices. There's Starbucks, Whole Foods, and local bbq place Tommy's Joynt! While the area is safe, if you walk back to Union Square taking O'Farrell, Ellis, Turk you will encounter the homeless population of tenderloin (not recommended). I recommend you walk the other way taking Post down to union square. There's a bus stop right in the corner as well. And plenty of bikes/scooters to rent nearby. Overall, will definitely recommend!

Yelp
Janea, PK, Maria and Chiquita at the front desk are amazing people! They made our stay here easy. Such an understanding staff. They knew that my mother was across the street at the hospital and made my father and I feel welcome. Every morning we were greeted with a Hello and how's your mother. Also, a huge THANK YOU to the cleaning staff! I saw them everyday cleaning non stop. This is one of the friendliest and cleanest Hotel in DowntownSF. TO David the GM, you should be proud of your staff! Hopefully my family doesn't have to visit the Hospital but if we do we are staying at this Hotel. Thank you!

Yelp
I am sharing something really sensitive to me in hopes that it won't happen to you or your loved ones. I was traveling and stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on Van Ness in downtown San Fransisco and my room was robbed. I feel like the hotel should be held responsible for the full amount of everything that was stolen from me. Housekeeping allowed a thief to walk right into my room, go through all of my personal belongings and steal whatever they wanted. The hotel never filed a police report when they said they would or get a case number within the company. I called the police to file a report and called the 800 Marriott number to create a case because the hotel failed to do so. I was told by the supervisor that I would be reimbursed for everything, but was not. I am doing all of the work when the hotel should be doing this. I was given a sloppy apology and $1,500 which does NOT cover the thousands of dollars worth of my things. Because of this, I missed my cousin's wedding, family photos, touring the city and several events. I spent 2 out of the 4 days in San Francisco stressing and dealing with this nightmare because the hotel did not do their part in taking full responsibility. They failed at having security protocols in place during housekeeping. The hotel costumer service was the worst I have ever experienced. I'm extremely disappointed and do not want this to happen to another guest in the future. I hope someone will look into the incident and correct the mistakes that were made. Attached are pictures from the video of the suspect walking out of my room with all of my belongings. Do not trust housekeeping or hotel staff to protect you and your belongings.

Yelp
Had a Dr. appointment in San Francisco, made a reservation for a room 4 days before the appointment. Unfortunately, the appointment was cancelled. I called to cancel the room (a $400 room) and was told that I would be charged the $400 as they have a 7 day cancellation policy. So they received $400 for a room that they didn't have to clean and could still rent it to someone else, making $800. The operator at the 800 number was very professional however was unable to do anything, it's Marriott's policy. If I utilized this business practice, I would be out of business. Absolutely ridiculous and seriously expensive. Will this Yelp review help resolve Marriott's problem? I'm guessing no as they are like any other big corporate entity and truly don't care. I will never stay at another Marriott again.

Yelp
I stayed at this location with a few friends over the weekend and despite their company mission our stay was anything but pleasant. Given the reputation of this establishment, after this weekend this location mine as well branch off and become apart of the Holiday in establishment. I have worked in customer success for the last decade and can say Peter at the front desk of this establishment needs retraining. Who in their right mind gets extremely rude with a guest via phone then when called out for his tone says "I'm sorry the phone must have echoed." Sorry Peter but the phone DID NOT ECHO you just lack customer service skills and like to get loud with customers. I pointed how out his tone was rude and condescending only to have him make up an excuse pretending to have technical difficulties. Not to mention, they charged us $250 for "cleaning supplies." When calling in regards to the additional fee they tried to say the room was a complete mess and needed deep cleaning. We explained how that was impossible considering we cleaned the room and bagged all the trash so it was an easy clean up. We asked for pictures with time/date stamps since the receptionist ( lady had the initials MZB) said they had alleged photos and she would email them over. That phone call was made earlier this morning and it is now almost 8pm but still no photos. This sounds mighty fishy that we never got photos for a "mess of a room" they claimed we made. The room had a loose sink knob which we reported to the front desk ahead of time even asking Peter for a new room but with an attitude told me I needed to understand that was next to impossible because of COVID. My overall perception of this location is that they're EXTREMELY RUDE and SCAMMERS that can not provide proof of an "alleged" mess of a room. I'd recommend looking for another location or hell even another hotel establishment that knows the value of their guests.

Yelp
Wonderful little boutique hotel just a 20 min walk from Union Square. Smooth check in/out and front desk agents were pleasant and friendly. Rooms were very small but quaint and a modern vibe to it. Area can be a little sketchy if you go the wrong way but for the most part I felt very safe at the hotel. Mel's Diner restaurant is connected to the hotel and is very clean. Service is good but pricey for diner food. Parking not so great. I went online and reserved my parking through Spot Hero and garage was only a block away and way cheaper than parking at the hotel. Overall I would highly recommend and I will definitely go back for a return stay!

Yelp
I was happy to hear we would be staying as a group at the Courtyard- it seems to have some sort of rustic charm. However, the charm did not last. We were charged a $250 cleaning fee despite us making the conscious effort to clean up after ourselves. Management claimed to have pictures to justify this charge. However, the alleged pictures remain hearsay. We asked for them days ago and have received NOTHING. Additionally, we asked for one night of parking. That is all we needed. One night, not TWO. Yet we were charged for two? Please make it make sense. Management has been unresponsive and unwilling to work with us. I understand times are tough and y'all have to make your money, but bilking you're clientele is not the way. I would give 0 stars if I could.

Yelp
The room was small, but seemed clean. There was a refrigerator, which was a plus considering I had dinner leftovers with me. Problem was, the walls were paper thin. I've never stayed somewhere where you could clearly hear the conversations happening in the room next to you. Additionally, the TV in the next room was right against the wall where the headboard of our bed was, so I could clearly hear what the other guests were watching. Not great when the people next door go to bed later than you, or wake up earlier than you. In short, if you're going to stay here - bring earplugs.

Yelp
In a town where $200 gets you a dorm room, and $500 gets you a Hilton in SoMa, this Marriott branded hotel in a slightly dodgy neighborhood is a good option. Well renovated, welcoming entrance, and common areas are very nice. I got a large, corner room that was quiet and with ample space. Bathroom was very functional. Issues / complaints. -- neighborhood doesn't feel super safe by night (tenderloin). Unfortunately lots of homeless people. -- Gym is a joke. Get the Classpass app, and go to nearby Crunch or Spin / HIIT studio Uforia Overall I will be back. Mostly for the price / cleanliness / quality ratio in a super expensive city.

Yelp
This was one of the worst hotels I've stayed at in a longtime. I'm a loyal Marriott member, I stayed here for a night while on tour (I'm a musician, I pretty much stay in hotels every night.) I could hear every single sneeze, cough and conversation of the people in the rooms around me. The building made crazy loud noises all night long that kept me up. There was construction that started right outside my window at 6 am. There was a loud dragging / screeching noise that woke me up Every 20 minutes. If other guests use the faucet or showers prepare for an unbearably loud hissing noise. Just absolutely awful. A waste of money. I would have slept better at one of the crappy motels down the street.

Yelp
Beautiful remodeled building from the early 1900s. Valley parking available on site in addition to several public garage's within walking distance. Property recently opened as of last year mid year. Will Definitely keep this property in mind next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Rooms small and not very clean. One night $135 but after parking $49 and taxes $215. Not good value for basic accommodations.

Yelp
Yesterday my sister and her partner were visiting me and wanted to stay in a hotel in San Francisco (I live in marin) which was great because it would give them time to settle in. They chose this hotel because it was close to the bridge and seemed clean. They booked their stay for two in a queen bed. I being that I already live here I offered to help set up and then we could walk and grab a late night bit. When we called to ask about parking a woman answered the phone. She seemed very bothered about the questions I had for her. We looked for parking for a while and finally found something that was only a block away. When we got inside both workers started at each other una weird way as we proceeded to the front desk. The minute my sisters partner started to give her information Monika at the front desk assumed we were all going to stay in the room. We being POC did not want to argue with her or explain ourselves. She gave us a lot of attitude which i feel is unexplainable when working in Customer service. There was NO one arming welcome. Just plain disinterest. The same exact tone I had gotten from her previously on the phone. Nice looking hotel but front desk is not welcoming at all. Sad because the city is the total opposite. I will definitely be letting friends, family and colleagues know about this. Hope management will explain how to give good customer service and to not judge a book by its cover. The minute she saw three colored women enter she looked directly at her coworker as if we had done something wrong. si left with a very bad taste in my mouth. I am part Hispanic and tried to speak Spanish to them and still was looked at very oddly. Hopefully Monika will learn from this. I am not making this racial it just felt like that the minute we walked in. Weird stares no professionalism from her what so ever. My sister was going to pay just like everyone else. Thank you to courtyard Marriott Union square. Got them a better room and had great customer service on the phone and in person. Monika needs to learn how to treat ALL customers good, not a select few.

Yelp
Terrible front desk agent! I was racially profiled and treated disrespectfully as soon as she found out it was a black Man checking in. She purposely swiped my card fast....3 times!!!....just so the payment wouldnt go thru. Once i gave her another card and told her to swipe slowly, she acted dumbfounded and all of a sudden the payment went thru. This is unacceptable and that old lady should be fired!!!

Yelp
This Hotel was recently remodeled, or refreshed. I accidentally found in on one of the Booking Sites, and I'm very happy I did! Smaller room but perfect for me,and the large Bathroom and beautiful shower made up for the size. Construction on Van Ness made Valet awkward, but the Hotel Valet Employees hustled with a smile! No room service, but Mel's Diner has a connecting Door for Guests.

Yelp
Great hotel, close to bill graham where I was attending a concert, about 4 short blocks. Very elegant hotel. Comfy and stylish.

Yelp
I wish it would let me give no stares. This was one of the worst experience at a hotel ever first of all the room was not clean there was no toilet paper in the bathroom we asked the front desk to bring some they never did the light in the bath room was broken the tv would not turn on the lady at the front desk was not helpful at all we had booked our room for 4 days but left after the first night would would definitely think twice if any of you are trying to stay at this hotel iv been staying at Marriotts for year and have never had a bad experience till now the people running this place should be fired or retrained because giving people a dirty room dining a pandemic is completely unacceptable

Yelp
My stay was fine until I called after checking out to report to the hotel staff that I had left behind a bag. I informed the woman who answered the phone of a cosmetics bag with a description of the bag that I had left behind. She called me back and told me no one had turned it in. I have emailed the hotel with a description of the bag and the location I know I left it in the room. I have yet to hear back and will not return to this or any other affiliated hotel. Hundreds of dollars worth of makeup is gone after being left in a secured hotel room. If you decide to stay here do not leave anything in your room as the staff is dishonest!!!!

Yelp
Stayed here this past Saturday and had a very pleasant experience. Check in was quick and the woman at the front desk was super friendly and welcoming. Our room was large (not just by SF standards) and well kept. Everything was new and modern looking. The bed was comfy and the pillows were a good mix of soft and firm. I especially loved that there were Paul Mitchell products in the bathroom! The only complaint I have is the valet parking is $60 and all they offer. Thankfully, the boyfriend found parking close by for cheaper and the front desk allowed us to move our car free of charge. Would a stay here again!

Yelp
The hotel isn't as bad as I thought it would be considering the location of it. There is currently a lot of construction going on around the hotel, i would suggest asking for a different room if you don't want to deal with all the construction noise. My family and I got a room with two full size beds and it was definitely enough for us. The rooms are a little smaller than normal hotel rooms, but we were barely in our rooms any ways. Right across the hotel is a nice late night place to eat and they have a diner downstairs too. The rooms here are pretty cheap, really isn't too bad if you don't plan on staying in your rooms for too long. The only problem I had was the maid did knock on our door at 8AM to clean our room. That is pretty early. I would consider putting the Do Not Disturb sign on your door until youre ready to leave for the day or just remind them to come back later.

Katherine R.

Yelp
The interior is modern but the hotel only has onsite parking for a handful of cars to accommodate an entire hotel. Good luck finding nearby street or garage parking! All of the recommendations they provided for nearby parking garages were also full. After a long travel day, this was extremely frustrating! Additionally, this part of downtown is extremely sketchy with a large homeless population. Apparently this part of San Francisco is called the "tenderloin." Trust me, there's nothing tender or safe about this area. Yes, the hotel's modern interior is nice and the room was clean, but they need to improve their onsite parking for their guests.

Yelp
They don't have free breakfast here. It's about 10 blocks to union square. Lot of construction going on atm.
