16 Hidden Gems to Visit in Portugal

"Despite its appearance, the surreal-looking opening in Portugal’s Lagoa da Serra da Estrela is actually not a portal to any other time or place, but rather a manmade funnel leading into a long tunnel. Though it looks like a natural sinkhole lined with cascading waterfalls, Covão dos Conchos is, in fact, a wonder of engineering. This lake in the Serra da Estrela mountains was artificially created in 1955 during the construction of the nearby hydroelectric dam. Instead of building a pipeline to channel water between Lagoa Serra da Estrela and Lagoa Comprida, the engineers working on the project decided to drill a tunnel through the mountain to connect the two lakes. The spillway is designed to provide nearby communities with fresh water, but the fact that no other constructions are present nearby makes the funnel seem more like a part of the lake than a part of an infrastructure project. What’s more, there are plants growing around the edges of the concrete and granite drain pipe, making the giant hole look even more natural. This sci-fi-looking spillway was a little-known secret in Portugal until photos of the hole went viral in 2016." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Nice hike to this place, not very difficult. About 4.5 km from the parking place (one way). Google shows you that you can reach it by car until further BUT do not try, the road is very bad. Leave the car at the designated parking. The place itself - the portal or the spillway- is not very easy to reach, it is not marked well. The hike is also not marked but you need to just walk straight. The view and spillway are nice to photograph. All in all, well spent two hours.

Beautiful & easy hike to Covão dos Conchos. We started from the car park walk around 4.7km to the famous lake & view point. It was very straight forward, super easy even with the snow. Took us 2hrs round trip slightly over 9km.

Great man-made tunnel for water. Hiking over stones and narrow paths. It is a 45-50 minutes walk one way from the car parking at Aproveitamento hidroelétrico de Lagoa Comprida to the Covao dos Conchos.

Amazing and eerie place to visit near sundown. Super cool. Highly recommend making the trek to see this!

It is simply hole made from concrete, the lake which sorounds the hole is also not special. Most of photos of that place is simply filltered. Waist of time.

Totally worth it! 4.6km walk to find one of the most astonish man made beauties. Trail is nice and beautiful too, with several small water streams and low vegetation. Waterproof shoes are highly recommended, and it can also get pretty windy.

Lovely hike, bit underwhelmed by the finale of the hike but overall still very beautiful all the way there, interesting boulders to climb on too
