"Vine Street Cafe is one of the East End’s best restaurants, but getting to Shelter Island is a pain in the ass. Fortunately, the Vine Street team now has a way more central restaurant called Cove Hollow Tavern, in the location formerly occupied by Cafe Max in East Hampton. The food’s a little pricey, but all very good, and unlike most Hamptons restaurants, they actually pride themselves on great service and hospitality." - Team Infatuation

A quality establishment with great decor with an original atmosphere. Awesome bar to sit at & the roosters tail cocktail 🍸 is fabulous. Appetizers- Bread and butter a must get ! Pork Cracklins (Huge portion!!) were pretty fun but little bit overwhelming for one person. The crinkle fries 🍟 are proper. My favorite is chicken rice bowl 🍚❤️ For dessert 🍨I have given the ' French ice cream sandwich with vanilla a try, it's on point. Very courteous and hospitable service - I highly recommend👌

Google
The calamari was great, fish and steak were overcooked so that needs to be fine tuned. Now the drinks were amazing! Drinks are a must!

Food was delicious! Fantastic service and friendly staff :) Looking forward to dining here again. Highly recommend - Katrina was amazing!

Google
Found! Founders Terry Harwood and Lisa Murphy know how to prepare great food and their latest example is no exception. Nice to have one of their creations on the mainland (not Shelter Island)! The restaurant is small, airy and cozy. The bar is comfortable and making classic cocktails. The menu is filled with a wonderful offering of salads, fresh fish, meats, hamburgers, and vegetables. The food is served without fuss and very tasty. There is a large offering of desserts if you still have room. This is a great addition to the dining options of the Hamptons! The best thing I had here was the firecracker shrimp. The ribs were also great. Next time I will definitely be going to get that firecracker shrimp again!

I had a wonderful dinner here taking advantage of their outdoor patio & social distancing precautions. There is a great local beer list, and some great cocktails as well. I really enjoyed the Caracas which they describe as a rum Negroni; it was awesome. This is a great place for vegetarian diets as well. The mushroom bolongese pasta was fantastic. The petite filet mignon was also cooked well and had a great mushroom sauce. The bbq dry rubbed fries are also crazy good. Would love to visit Cove Hollow again one day.

Google
This is my local favorite, great people, great food and drink. I cannot say enough about the friendly staff. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing sit down dinner or a burger at the bar, this is a great spot.

Google
What an incredible meal!! The rock shrimp appetizer was delicious and the seafood over linguini was perfection!! Topped off with a Woodford Reserve Manhatten in the perfect glass, garnished with bourbon soaked cherries. Cheers 🍸

Yelp
Cove Hollow has a small but homey vibe. I arrived on a Sunday night solo and sat right at the bar! Sports games were on and service was attentive. A slice of bread with dipping oil was given - smokey and salty taste. I ordered The Orchard Thief as a drink, and I appreciate the 1 solid ice cube compared to crushed ice. All food was served hot and fresh - I had the Skirt Steak Frites. Taste was good and especially loved the crinkle cut fries. I am not out this far east often but will keep it in mind when I am nearby!

Yelp
This is a consistently good restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and the food is terrific. Service is excellent. Try the lobster tacos!

Yelp
Excellent excellent - The pork grinds are so good and crisp. You will have leftovers and the next day wish you had more. The food was served hot. This place is casual and and the staff is excellent and friendly.

Yelp
I just read a negative review that made me laugh. Sounds more like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. This restaurant is a hidden gem on the east end. Friendly staff with a fun menu and a relaxing atmosphere make it one of my "go-to" places. Their burgers easily rate with the best in the Hamptons. The spicy shrimp are crispy and flavor full, yes I like that sort of thing. So if you're looking for some low key good food, this a great place.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Dined here one Labor Day with my family. The manhattans were some of the best I've ever had, and fairly strong! We are outside which was a tad bit noisy when cars came through but a better atmosphere than inside we thought. We were actually surprised at how empty the restaurant was! What we ordered: - Firecracker Shrimp - loved!!! Not too spicy, a great small app or side - Skillet Seared Diver Scallops - light! The succotash was more just corn and peas but this was a healthy simple light dish - Wedge Salad - the salad was amazing!! Particularly for being a simple salad I was surprised how much I loved it!! - Profiterole - I'm not normally a profiterole person but enjoyed this one! - Brie Cheesecake - have never had a Brie cheesecake before and am honestly not quite sure if I could tell the difference but it was yummy nonetheless

Yelp
I thought the food, service and ambiance was great. Who knew on a Thursday night just before the season rush begins I would have the entire restaurant to ourselves at 830 PM. Salads were great, very flavorful. Pea soup great just needed a punch of salt, but I'd always rather adding myself. The Buffalo wings were the only item I'd give a B, cooked perfectly but did not love the sauce. Steak, ribs and a tuna poke bowl were all great! Their Shelter Island restaurant too is amazing! Both have become 2 new favorites for me. Good think I live here all year round as I may not be able to dine at either establishment during the season.

Yelp
you could drive by this place and not know it's there, but on a Friday night in August you can still find a table, and some excellent food. We have been here a number of times, and while the interior is somewhat awkward, the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Tonight the server recommended the special, a skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and fingerling potatoes, and we both gave it a try. We were not disappointed. A perfect medium rare tender steak, a generous portion but not diet busting, and crispy skinned potatoes with tender insides. We passed on the appetizer course, but after seeing an order of the heirloom tomatoes with burrata pass by, we tried it for dessert. Fresh, interesting, and delicious. Atmosphere 2.5, service 5, food 4. Note: they have outdoor seating, and while it is pleasant and roomy, it is right on MontUk Highway, so the noise could be annoying to some. On the other hand, you can bring your puppy. Strongly recommend.

Yelp
Just got to East Hampton and went to this restaurant on a whim. Such an eclectic menu. Everyone got something different and thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Firecracker shrimp, lobster taco (was a special), pork rinds, and the bread and butter to start. Tofu bowl, bbq ribs, lamb burger, and mushroom bolognese. All very good. Drinks were good too. Will be back

Yelp
I had high hopes for Cove Hollow since they have really great reviews here and on Google. This first experience will likely be our last as the food was mediocre at best. Maybe we went on an off night as Monday nights are typically slower? Both our pastas were overcooked to the point where my friend left 90% of her mushroom bolognese on her plate. The shrimp on my seafood pasta were overcooked to the point of a rubber-like texture. I don't like wasting food so I worked in my dish slowly. The highlight of the night was the firecracker shrimp appetizer. The cauliflower was OK. I didn't particularly enjoy my Tavern Mule cocktail - lots of bitterness and not a well balanced beverage. For the price, I'd rather go to Main Street Tavern in Amagansett or East Hampton Grill. What a disappointing dinner.

R S.

Yelp
Service and food have really gone down hill here. The poor bartender also has to wait on tables and is rarely behind the bar. A major disappointment in a restaurant that used to be pretty good. Skip it.

Sandra S.

Yelp
Cozy place with great service and even better food! Four of us had dinner here on a Thursday night and almost had the place to ourselves. We had the ribs, pork chop and firecracker shrimp bowl. A standout was the fries that came with the ribs - everyone at the table shared them and loved them!! Overall a really nice experience.

Maryanne M.

Yelp
Mushroom Bolognese was incredible! Drinks were nice. Ambiance was OK. That's all I have to say.

Natalie Y.

Yelp
do not waste your time on this restaurant. first of all, we waited 50 minutes for our food to come. i tried the burger, the lobster tacos, the cauliflower, the firecracker shrimp, and the elderflower cocktail. NONE of it was good. the burger tasted oddly burnt and sour, which it should not be. the lobster tacos were kind of dry and flavorless. the cauliflower was mid and not super bad but definitely not worth the price. the shrimp was incredibly flavor packed if you're into that, but also weirdly nutty and spicy and sour. the elderflower cocktail also tasted genuinely not tasty. i don't think anything was worth the price.

Yelp
I came here for dinner this past weekend and had an all around great experience. I sat in the outdoors section which was nicely decorated. At first I thought it would be too noisy being so close to the main road, but I didn't even end up noticing the traffic sounds during dinner. The waitstaff was really friendly and they were all wearing masks and gloves. We were seated on time and there was plenty of parking in their lot. To start, we tried one of the bread and butter appetizers with sea salt, and another bread (more like a toast) with pesto and mozzarella. They were both super delicious and decadent. They included thick slices of toast, so it is more than enough to share. I tried the gazpacho soup, which was okay but I wouldn't get it again as it was a little too bland. I had the garganelli bowl for my main which I really loved. The vegetarian mushroom bolognese sauce was amazing and tasted very close to real meat. All in all, I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
I have somehow overlooked this great restaurant for some time. it is understated but truly excellent .my wife a stick vegan was happily accommodated,I do do not suffer from these limitations and very much enjoyed the potatoes encrusted bass.we also would note that Chris abs Juan were exceptionally friendly and helpful we will be back soon Thank you

Matt E.

Yelp
My family and I really enjoyed this place. They have a unique cocktail list and a balanced menu from vegetarian options to steak. The CHT burger was excellent! Service was great. Nothing but good things to say about this place.

Aarti G.

Yelp
The service here was great. Our server was very attentive even though he was managing every table. My husband thought his cocktail was too bitter and they let him get a different cocktail with no extra charge. I enjoyed my cocktail which was the Private 2. It was a mix of gin, Prosecco, and peach. I got the scallops which were very flaky and came in this green sauce and chilis. It had a bit of a Mexican flare to it and was really good. My husband got the sea bass which came with spinach and cauliflower. The spinach and cauliflower were delicious. It had a vinegary sweet and sour taste to it.

Courtney H.

Yelp
A friend took me here last night to celebrate my birthday - and it was absolutely delicious! How have I never been here before?! The firecracker shrimp was DIVINE. I had the Halibut which was so mild, light and flaky. The profiterole was the perfect ending. I will say the team was definitely short-staffed but they were communicative so we didn't mind waiting. Can't wait to go back!

garth w.

Yelp
I used to love this place. Would regularly order the firecracker shrimp and bowls. We went 3 weeks ago and I ordered the wedge salad which was literally uneatable. The ribs were so salty and the steak average. The only thing that was still good was the shrimp.

Rita G.

Yelp
A few years ago we had great meals here. During the pandemic we lowered our expectations and looked forward to when the overall experience would return to its former standards. Well, we're not quite there yet unfortunately. The service is super friendly and tries very hard. The ambience is great. However our cocktails were not made well (a cosmo ordered "not sweet" was made to taste like cotton candy, and my husband's scotch with a twist did not taste like the scotch he ordered and came with a lemon wedge not a twist - not a big deal, just.....off). The salads were unrefined and the burger was over cooked. The whole time we're thinking of all the other places nearby we could be having a better experience. I write this review not to be snarky because the waitstaff is great and I am rooting for this place., but because hopefully someone will pay attention and help the kitchen and bar up their game back to its former glory.

Yelp
Everything about the restaurant is perfect. There's nothing bad about it . The service is good food is great Everything is perfect I love the desert.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorites in the Hamptons. Small, cute farmhouse atmosphere, but definitely Easthampton upscale. The food is great: I recommend the wedge salad (elevated), firecracker shrimp, shishito peppers, burrata. For mains the daily specials are awesome, also the lamb burger, the pastas, the gumbo. Monday night is tiki night should you fancy a pupu platter or a mai tai. They have their own parking lot and given the size of this place it's probably enough, so feel pretty confident that you can park at the restaurant. My only caveat would be the 5 day in advance CC charge for a reservation- I get it given this is a small place that is always full, but this is a bit heavy handed when you can't even ask for a specific table and, if not famous, will take what you are given. How about a two-day cancellation policy? Still a Hamptons gem.

Isadora S.

Yelp
Oh goodness - it's such a cute space and I had high hopes but the food -- ugh---- my husband had the veggie burger and I had the chili tofu. Good god the meal was atrocious - the tofu was fried so much that I thought it was pumpernickel bread - it was fried to oblivion and the burger was tasteless. The best thing was the beer and fries but we wanted a meal. We won't be coming back ;/ hate to write a bad review during Covid but -- good god the food was bad :(

Jeff G.

Yelp
Truly excellent! The young man who took care of us, Colum (spelling?), is a fine fellow. We had several different dishes and they were all very tasty! We had a minor mix-up at the end of the meal and the manager was MORE than generous to us! Looking forward to returning!

Madeline H.

Yelp
Best place on the South Fork! Service is awesome (especially with Victoria at the bar, where I like to sit) and they have a super cozy atmosphere with quality dishes. Staff is very approachable and work hard to make every customer happy. Thanks CHT for always serving the BEST!

Preetha S.

Yelp
It's a really nice place. And it's definitely got the tavern feel down! Along with a bartender who looks like he could man a tavern from a folklore and break up a few knightly jousts! All the while mixing a really good drink! Foods good, service is good. Will definitely be back!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Just be aware they use peanut oil in MANY dishes. Not a place for people with allergies.

Mark M.

Yelp
Good food, good service and a cozy environment. Open a few years now - and I'm glad that I made time to enjoy a nice dinner there.

LeeAnn V.

Yelp
We really wanted to love this restaurant. We had good memories of when it was Café Max. The atmosphere is ok, nothing to write home about. The service was good. The menu didn't offer too many choices. My husbands martini arrived with a few bugs floating on top. Although they apologized and replaced it we felt that they could've offered to comp that drink. Really liked my miso salmon bowl with jasmine rice, the brisket burger was a good size and quite tasty. A bit pricey for what it was.

Barry M.

Yelp
Raw vegetable salad had no vegetables, lots of wet wilted lettuce. Lamb burger overcooked, fries over salted. Crispy shrimp salad was tasteless. Chicken pot pie wasn't bad. Cheese soup tasty. Inconsistent follow through, and pricy.

Mark-Antonio S.

Yelp
I can't say enough about the service at this new extension of Vine Street of Shelter Island. The roasted vegetables, shrimp salad, red snapper po' boy, and grass fed steak was simply sublime. We left completely satisfied, and cannot wait to return. Shout out to Clint and the rest of the crew in front as well as in the kitchen. All your hard work is paying off. Keep pushing!

Mary B.

Yelp
We only wish we had the dinner Laura Donnelly had - her review in the EH STAR WAS NOT NEAR OUR EXPERIENCE last night. Sorry we went there, two others Warned us ... Should have listened.

China C.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite restaurants in East Hampton. The space is really charming and always feels good after a day at the beach. I would recommend going a little earlier as sometimes the entrees run out closer to closing. They make a vegetarian gluten free pasta bolognese that is incredible! The service is really nice here with very friendly staff.

Christopher R.

Yelp
We walked in and were greeted by a hostess, who was friendly, though reserved. Immediately after being seated menus were distributed. A few minutes later, our server, Calvin, offered us a choice of water, and he was excellent. He was friendly and genuine and seemed to love his job. After water was served, our orders were taken. Our waiter gave us excellent recommendations and spoke clearly despite the noisy atmosphere. About 10 minutes later, our appetizers were served. We ordered the tomato salad, due to Calvin's recommendation, which was fantastic. We also split a side of fries, which were also delicious. Our mains were delivered, and I ordered the Halibut with a side of corn succotash, which was excellent. The halibut had a little bit of a sweet and spicy taste, which was unique. The corn succotash was delicious, but I could only muster a single bite. My friend ordered the mushroom bolognese, which was phenomenal. Overall I loved Cove Hollow Tavern and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Robert R.

Yelp
This place does not deserve three stars. It is excellent. Food is great with an interesting menu, service is good, and the space is great. (Could do without the boat on the wall but eh, so what.) its expensive but it's in east Hampton, everywhere is. 4 stars easy. More than 4.5.

Mark M.

Yelp
Just had dinner here. Wow! Cute place Great service Perfect food Already scheduled a return dinner Hard to find places like this in the Hamptons...

Yelp
My family was a fan of the old Cafe Max (now occupied by Cove Hollow Tavern). We were so sad when Cafe Max closed. Every time we drive by Cove Hollow, we reminisced about all the good food we ate at Cafe Max. We finally decided to give Cove Hollow a try, and we're so glad we did! We went on a Saturday evening at 5:30 (my parents like to eat early) in mid October. Although we made reservations online (credit card required), we didn't really need them. However, by the time we left, the place was getting filled up at the tables and the bar. Between the three of us, we ordered the escargot with squid ink pasta (glorious) as an appetizer. Oh, and I should add we asked for bread for the table...and I think they make it to order. The bread took a while to arrive at the table, but it was piping hot and also super delicious. For the mains, we ordered two orders of the lobster cioppino (soooo good) and the salmon with lentils. For desert, we split the blueberry/peach cobbler and all had coffee. Everything was super tasty without being overly salty, and we're definitely going to be back. Despite the high prices, the quantity was pretty good. The only thing I wish this place had (and maybe it will as more people give them their business) is a bar with more options (they didn't have bloody mary which is my dad's favorite) and cappuccino (my mom's favorite with dessert). The service was great. Our waiter, who told us he was new to the job, was very polite and attentive. The staff thanked us for our visit on the way out, which is always nice. We'll definitely be back for more!

Katie T.

Yelp
Delicious cocktails. Nice atmosphere. Excellent dishes, all made with fresh seasonal ingredients.

Mark S.

Yelp
We went for dinner this past weekend and it was our first time back since the Covid-19 shutdown. They have set up outdoor dining and have removed many indoor tables to adhere to the required social distancing regulations. The food overall was as good as it was before the shut down but sadly, the service was not. Our server was not as attentive as he should have been and the vibe was not pleasant. Management needs to figure out a way to make the dining experience pleasant & fun despite the restrictions. It can be done, especially considering a $200 + tab (no wine) for 2!!

P R.

Yelp
Came here twice this week. First time 25 dollar burger was over cooked so we sent it back. Second time ribs were dry as in made that morning and kept under a lamp. Tried to get better ribs - were told that's how they come. Got strange looks. Were kindly offered a replacement - asked for a burger rare. Came back medium. Gave up and ate medium burger. For a place that charges this much money - half rack of ribs is almost 40 - they need to get a better chef.

susan t.

Yelp
Drove past this cute little place and decided on a whim to make a reservation for me and the family. We started with shared apps - the burrata over heirloom tomatoes, the shishitos, and the wedge salad. All simple preparations that allowed the flavors of their main ingredients to shine. The accompanying bread was delicious and served warm. Once all entrees are dropped and tasted, it's extremely rare when one of us doesn't have "meal envy" or regrets our choice. But, last night, it was all-around deliciousness as we sampled (and "oohed and aahed" over) each other's meals. One daughter had the burger served w/ (not exaggerating) the best fries ever, lightly dusted with a salty/smokey mix that seemed to include turmeric and cumin and served with freshly-made mayo. My other daughter had the steak. She likes medium well -- which for me is usually a "no thank you" - but she insisted I give it a try and it was surprisingly juicy and tender w/ incredible flavor that included a hint of sweetness that ONLY comes from grass-fed beef. My DH had the shellfish gumbo and I had the halibut. The balance of "smoke and sea" in the gumbo - and the succotash and light tomato broth accompanying the halibut - made each dish exceptional. For those who like to linger long over their dinners out, this isn't really that kind of place. While the ambience is "comfortable, modern farmhouse," space is at a premium, and the friendly and efficient wait staff move things along at just the right clip without rushing you out the door. While we were too full for dessert, the sweets being served at neighboring tables looked as delicious as everything else -- so next time (because there will definitely be a next time) we'll be saving some room.

Yelp
Food fell off a cliff. Same horrible spice on all food. $59 for a Golden Corral Steak.

Elyse E.

Yelp
Uneven expensive food. Shrimp salad was very nice. My fish (potato crusted bass) was actually quite good. My husband ordered the fried chicken. It was a greasy, tough, boneless chicken breast which was totally tasteless and an insult at $31. KFC would be better at a third the price. You could do better even in expensive East Hampton. Also, staff not up to the price scale - they have been open long enough to have their wait staff fully trained.

Ann F.

Yelp
We had dinner at Cove Hollow last night for the first time. It was WONDERFUL, the food was absolutely delicious. I had the chowder (great) and the chicken breast also great. Keith had the wedge salad and decided to order the chowder after I kept saying how great it was. He then ordered the duck which was also fab. Cove Hollow will be our new 'go to' spot. Not sure why we waited so long. PS the staff was top notch!!

Adam R.

Yelp
Was there for a birthday once, and again several times since. Staff are always extremely friendly and prompt, the food is absolutely amazing and well worth any price to pay for it. Their calamari is to die for especially. I'll without a doubt be returning there soon.

Katie S.

Yelp
My family and I had a early dinner at Cove Hollow Tavern a week after they opened. The service was wonderful, our waitress was very attentive. We enjoyed a nice family dinner. The Lamb burger is fantastic a must try...as it the Soba Noodle Salad as an appetizer or entree. The desserts are delicious too. Eating at Cove Hollow Tavern was a pleasure, it was a relaxing, welcoming environment too. The decor is spectacular and there is plenty of parking. We will be back again soon for another great meal.

David S.

Yelp
I have gone here many times in the past and I enjoyed it. The food was awful this time. They put the same spice on almost every meal that was ordered at my table. My hamburger tasted like they had just unfroze a $5 patty from Costco. My friend's steak tasted like a giant eraser. The chicken was not even cooked all the way through. My father's salmon had potatoes that they didn't even bother to cut. I would not recommend eating here. It is immensely overpriced for the terrible quality.

Len R.

Yelp
Eager to check this place out because of the Vine Street connection. Very underwhelmed. On a Friday night, very slow service - not enough wait staff, exceptionally noisy - bad acoustics and most importantly, high priced mediocre food. The sworrdish at $41.00 was just ok, tomato salad the same, roast chicken comparable to what you can get at Costco and not a varied menu. Will not return.
