A Year of Free Wings is Up For Grabs in One Sports Bar’s Women’s World Cup Bracket | Eater Austin

"I noticed Cover 2 was mentioned alongside Cover 3 in announcing the Women's World Cup bracket contest; the restaurants are running watch parties, offering five special wing flavors based on competing countries, operating a bracket contest to win free wings for a year and a $500 prize, and collecting sports equipment for Partnerships For Children." - Erin Russell

Stop at Cover 2 tonight to have a quick bite and a couple of drinks. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of drinks and the food as well. Their special lemon drop blueberry martini is absolutely delicious and their apple walnut grilled chicken salad was generous and fantastic! The bartender was personable and gave great service. I will be back again soon!

Came here on a Friday night with a small group and didn’t have any wait to be seated. Service was great and food was great. I got wings and tater tots. The wings are good sized and crispy. the tater tots were the best. Crispy and soft at the same time.

My first time here. Met the new manger who is a super nice and guy and seems truly interested in our experience. It’s a sports bar so it’s not an intimate or quiet place. There were families and everyone seems welcome. I had French onion soup which wasn’t bad but not the best I’ve had. It didn’t have much flavour. The fish and chile were really delicious though and my friend enjoyed her burger salad. Staff was attentive and friendly. Overall I liked this place and would return.

We came here late Saturday night. They ate one of the few places open in the area that late. It was crowded but no wait. They were open until 11 for food, 1am for the bar. Staff was friendly. There is seating inside and outside. Pretty big bar but it was filled. There are tvs all over with different games on. The food was very good. We got garlic Parmesan wings to start. Very crispy with good flavor. My only critique is that I wish there was a little more sauce on them. Speaking of wings, they offer free wings on your birthday. Check the rules and restrictions listed on the menu. I got the Rodeo Burger. It had cheddar cheese, bacon and bbq sauce. You also get a side of onion rings instead fries. The onion rings were amazing. They felt like they were melting in my mouth. I took some and added it to my burger to enhance it. It actually got more crowded the later it got. I will definitely be coming back to try some of the other menu items.

As a gay couple, we love the vibe and chill atmosphere at Cover 2. The best bartender, Mary, is an absolute gem. We have never felt out of place here and love the inclusive vibes. Mary is an asset to the local community and keeps us coming back!

Google
While in the area for dinner with a larger party, we were looking for comfort food and a menu with options for everyone. Cover Two’s menu had everything we were looking for, and then some! The sports bar vibe was family friendly, the staff was attentive, and the food came out quickly. Some of the best dishes we had were the Wing Burger, the steak and cheese egg rolls, and the Gladiator sandwich. The pretzel sticks were soft and doughy, and the cheese sauce that came with them was great. We were a bit disappointed in the buffalo wings, as we found them to be very small and possibly overcooked because of how dry they were. I was told these were some of the best wings in the area, and maybe it was an off night or related to the wing shortage, but I unfortunately have to disagree with that statement. I ordered Mac and cheese and found it to be pretty basic - no breadcrumbs, and the cheese sauce settled at the bottom of the dish and constantly had to be stirred to get any cheese. Overall, it really depends on what you order here. Some things are a hit, others are a miss. Cover Two was good for what we were looking for that night though.

Google
i could write a 4 page paper on everything this business does right to support and offer the customer an amazing experience, but today i’m here about the blue cheese! they made the amazing decision to rework the recipe. when i say it’s in the top 3 best blue cheeses i have ever tried. i definitely couldn’t recommend more. try the menu i guarantee you will love every bite.

Google
Was here for a birthday party. The servers the food & bartender were all amazing. We played music on the jukebox inside and the manager skipped all our songs and locked out the music. He said it wasn’t the “motif” for the atmosphere of the bar during the day. It’s honestly a disappointment we can’t hear the music we want for a birthday because the manager doesn’t like it. Definitely won’t be coming back.

Yelp
My friend had her birthday party here, because unlike TK's (I'm sorry to report), Cover Two will give thirty free wings to the birthday boy or girl. Great! Let's invite everyone! First, their parking lot is way too small. It fills up fast, leaving you hunting for street parking. The spaces reserved for other businesses will leave you looking for street parking -- which, oddly enough, was closer to the entrance. Once we got inside, we found our large party crammed into a bunch of squished-together tables because the restaurant forgot to write down the reservation! On a football Sunday, we now had families with toddlers, not in the semi-private back room, but almost sitting on top of people screaming at the TV's alongside the usual dinner service. I could tell the staff was trying, but the overcrowded situation led to sloppy, slow, and inattentive service, repeated shouting of our orders and the subsequent corrections, and many of us staring at empty plates and cups. Still, a few party guests wound up leaving early because of the awful experience, one trio not even staying long enough to order. Forget about conversations, too; the din of the games, football fans, diners, kids, guests, and waitresses morphed into a nondescript discord. The food was okay. The wings we shared were juicy and the sauces good. I'd ordered the Rhode Island wings, which were something I'd never seen before. While I enjoyed them, they were only plain wings and pickled cherry peppers. The combination works much better on fried calamari. I'm told the sandwiches and fries were great. All in all, we left Cover Two with ears ringing, stomachs not full, kids crying, money somewhat wasted, and a birthday party we'd all sooner forget. Needless to say, the unprofessionalism of this place means that free wings won't be enough to get me back here anytime soon.

Yelp
We went for lunch on a rainy day on the advice of a friend. The place was terrific! Eat the tomato soup. OMG it was the best soup I've ever had. We also split the steak burger which was perfect- go to Cover Two! you'll love it.

Yelp
Everything you could want in a sports bar: great food, lots of drink options, and a busy atmosphere with tvs everywhere. The servers are very attentive and hard working. The owners just switched over and seem very friendly. Still the same excellent quality across the board. My favorite wing flavor is "the mistake" which is a mix of old bay seasoning and buffalo sauce! The pretzels are soft and served perfectly warm. The cheesesteak never fails whether you get it as a wedge or egg rolls.

Leonard D.

Yelp
Cover two has been our go to since moving to Newtown. We always get the same things but the menu has changed. The recipe for the fish tacos has changed...and not for the better. The chips and salsa are no longer on the menu, and you cannot get calamari on a salad. Service was great and last time I had a burger here it was delicious. New addition and better than before. Always love their beer selection.
google avatar

Lily O.

Yelp
Food quality has diminished since new owners took over a few months ago- example- the blue cheese dressing is thin and flavorless and no blue cheese crumbles definitely not homemade ,the recipes have changed too- the chili tastes like a meat sauce in marinara- not a good one either Drinks are way too sweet - margaritas taste like sweet and sour mix, even if you order a passion fruit or coconut marg. Service isn't great either- orders are wrong prices have increased too- why did I get charged 1.00 to have the dressing that comes on my salad put in the side??? New Owner take note: you can't get cheaper quality food and then raise the prices without expecting to lose business, duh

Yelp
We frequent here somewhat often. It's a great home style bar restaurant. The food is always prepared very well. They have really great service and a very friendly environment. Plus they have a Ben Mason framed and hung on the wall. Great Michigan Wolverine fullback who is from Newtown and played there. Being a huge fan , that's always a plus lol!! So as far as the food, their wings are delicious, great flavors and always cooked well. French onion soup was tasty and had a lot of onions in it. Wife has the steak and cheese and it was delicious, bread was awesome and the veggies were fresh and sautéed well. Fried pickles were also very very good. One of the better ones I have eaten out. A tad salty but it worked very well and i enjoyed the dipping sauce. We do come here and it is one of our staple places. Never disappointed

Yelp
Nice local spot to grab a bite and watch the game. Lots of big screen TV's and food was good. Nice beer selection as well

Claudine R.

Yelp
Service was great! It's a sports bar, so quite loud but fun. Enjoyed the cocktail, autumn in Connecticut, dangerously good. Jerk wings were one of the best in my opinion. Everyone loved their big papi's burger, HUGE at a very reasonable price and I liked the steamed clams, fresh and tasty, double order for me and I probably could've had another order. Calamari was just okay. I'd definitely be back.

Yelp
Some of the best wings in the state! Service is always friendly and quick.Good beer and drink menu.Great place to watch sports events with multiple TV screens as well as a great bar.

Yelp
Went in Friday night around 4:30 for dinner with my wife. There was a large party in the middle of the dining room with about 10 screaming children. The parents were drinking and ignoring the fact that their toddlers were jumping up and down and screaming at the top of their lungs. The management didn't do a thing. The staff looked upset and concerned. There was an older server who kept shaking her head at the table. She looked embarrassed. I felt bad for her and the rest of the staff because it's not their fault, it's the management's fault. They allowed the children to run a muck in the middle of the restaurant. I've been a manager for the last 30 years. I would've kindly walked up to the parents and asked them to address the situation as guests were complaining. I watched a senior couple get up and move from their table after looking visibly distraught. Only assuming it was because of the screaming children. The guy who seated us told me he was the general manager. Do better, sir. Maybe your guests wouldn't have been trying to cram into that front patio if you were able to try and control the situation. You guys have a back room and you should've put all of the children back there instead of allowing all of the staff to hang out back there. Food was good. Beer was cold.

Chris G.

Yelp
They used to have the best onion rings but some moron manager decided to take them off the menu. Went there today for onion rings but now the menu is very limited and not what it used to be. Service is still great.

Yelp
As a newbie to Newtown I had no idea of the restaurant bar scene. After visiting a local winery, we wanted a place to eat. But WHERE TO EAT at almost 10pm at night on a Friday. An employee at the winery suggested Cover 2. This place is hopping at 10pm and the kitchen is still open. The menu offers a broad selection and the food choices were either pretty good or good in quality. Not many bars have an open kitchen at this late at night which makes Cover 2 a real clutch place to go if your in the area and your not interested in the vibe of a 24 hr diner. I would definetly recommend Cover 2 to anyone on their way through Newtown and I will definetly be there again.

Yelp
I was going to put 2 stars but that would have felt a little too harsh since we go here a decent amount. We got take out from cover two yesterday which was two burgers one was a big papi and with the third item being a buffalo chicken salad. The salad was pretty good and fine. But the issue was the burgers not like they were bad or anything they were fine it was just the fries that were soggy and not good, in mind i think keeping it away from the burger would be a better option since it won't get mixed up with the juices of the burger. The Big Papi is good too but that juice doesn't match with the fries, sometimes leaving the fries being wet and hot.

G R.

Yelp
The service is terrible, you can tell the grease in the deep fryers needs to be replaced, and it smells like a night club. I would skip this place, plenty of other places in the area worth the money.

Yelp
So we have been to Cover Two a few times and I have never done a review. I decided this time I would give the restaurant its due props. This is a very casual sports bar in the downtown area of Sandy Hook. It is well known and liked by the local residents. When we first moved to the area, more than one person told us to check it out. It's usually busy when we go whether it is for lunch or dinner but never so busy that we can't get a table indoor or outdoors (they have quite a few outdoor tables which helps). I should say we have never had to make a reservation etc (not sure they even take those to tell you the truth... think it's a first come first serve kind of place?) While busy they are always staffed extremely well and we have had great efficient and nicely attentive service! The food menu is pretty extensive and has typical American fare along with a few Italian dishes mixed in. They have great wings and they are always serving those up... quite a popular item! We have tried their burgers (quite big and delicious), sandwiches, and salads (great dressings and selection). Recently I got their lobster grilled cheese which was fabulous. The lobster was plentiful nicely done and they put a tarragon aioli on it which was wonderful! Their Cole slaw.... for all the Cole slaw lovers out there.....is excellent. I often pick that over fries (dare I say it?). I also love that they have some pretty good cocktails. For a casual bar, I think that is amazing! I love their espresso martini and often go that route. All in all a totally great casual dining spot in town that has the love of the locals and it should! We will continue to be frequent guests here.

Frederic S.

Yelp
The food was excellent they have the best chicken wings around they have one called the mistake it's no where near a mistake they have the best flavor around. It won't be a mistake if you get there. The service dining is great the bar is always jumping. They have multiple TVs to see the game the ambience is warm and inviting you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

Seamus O.

Yelp
Too much nickel and diming on the prices. They charge extra for all kinds of things and don't tell you - side of bbq sauce for your fries, celery, extra hot sauce, guacamole for your nachos which you didn't ask for, the list goes on. The quality of the food has gone downhill too - in particular the wings and nachos. Only plus is location, ambience and fairly quick service.

Josh A.

Yelp
Do not go. Ever since new management has taken over this place is falling apart. Prices are unbelievable and quality of ingredients and food has just gotten worse and worse. Drink selection and variety has dwindled which used to be a big selling point for me. Went here twice since the new ownership because I had been hearing things from around town, and now understand why people have been dropping this place.

Yelp
Omg yummmmm!!! Did you know you get 30 FREE wings for your birthday?! Up to 3 flavors!! I know where we will spend every family birthday moving forward!
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
We ate here 3 times in a week while we were visiting! My favorite was the apple pecan salad. The chicken is so good, as is the rest of it. The staff were nice, it is a local sports bar with just about every kind of food. I wish we had one where I live!

Jessica T.

Yelp
I'm generally a fan of this sports bar, so I was shocked when I ordered chicken tenders with wing sauce for takeout today and received what is pictured. These 4 chicken tenders cost $11, while I can order 10 traditional wings for $12.50. Hoping the new owner works on pricing because this is pretty ridiculous. I understand inflation has affected everything, *and* 4 chicken tenders for $11 is crazy.
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
Why have I not heard of this place sooner all these years living in this area!! This spot by far exceeded my expectations of a typical sports bar. The food was amazing! I came here for my birthday dinner and they really make you feel special with the sparklers they bring out for your wings. We started with the crispy Brussels sprouts and Rhode Island calamari for appetizers and I was blown away! First time trying Rhode Island calamari and it was so good, I definitely have to come back for that. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly too with an actual crispy texture. We then had 3 wing flavors honey bbq, chipotle and garlic parm. All amazing flavors and meaty wings. I'd love to come back for other flavors as well. We ended with an Oreo mousse cheesecake type of dessert that came with a scoop of ice cream... OMG SO GOOD. Ok great place to do a birthday. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
We ordered food and did curbside pickup from Cover Two in Sandy Hook CT. My phone did not have a good signal when I placed the order however the women taking my order was very patient. I was happy when she read back the order to be sure nothing was missed. Our order consisted of Rhode Island Calamari, Big Papi burger, Steakhouse burger, side of rice pilaf, and peanut butter pie with a scoop of ice cream for dessert. We ate the calamari in the car so we ddi not risk it getting soggy on the ride home. The calamari was very good and a little spicy even for us. The burgers were Big and came with french fries and a pickle. Right after we parked the car to eat our calamari I noticed we had a bag full of hot food, but no second bag with my pie (cold). The girl who brought our food out to us seemed real young. So she may not have known, or been told to review the order before bringing it out. Luckily we were still in the parking lot and were able to call and have them bring the pie out to the car. I can see why this place is usually busy.

Bob T.

Yelp
Great pub food recommend the wings, and if you're feeling healthy I highly recommend the blackened salmon with kale salad it is excellent.

Joseph C.

Yelp
Terrible place , young people that don't care about respect for older people. Been there numerous times and the vibe never changes . So many other nice places to visit. It's all about the management. Trust me...

Yelp
I went here for dinner today. I took about 10 minutes between me and my friend to decide what we wanted to eat. I heard our waitress go into where all the other waitresses were and she said please somebody take this table from me. These two girls are so annoying they are the worst customers I've ever had.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Wings are always on point. Their Menu has great options! The Oreo explosion is the best!
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
I stopped in for some wings with a buddy around lunch time. It was a beautiful day, and we sat at a table outside. It's a good location to take in Sandy hook center while eating. The service was prompt. I ordered the extra hot wings. I expect extra hot wings to be borderline painful. Some of us enjoy the thrill. The wings were good, lots of flavor, but medium heat at best imho. I am a spice addict so take that this with a grain of cayenne. Missing a star for not having a truly hot wing sauce. Get something wild, and I'll be back baybee.
google avatar

Iulia B.

Yelp
Great food. Staff was friendly and attentive. I highly recommend if you're in the mood for bar type food.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Fun place and food is okay. I still have more to try but we like the bar. The staff is nice!
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
Staff couldn't care less for COVID related safety. The blonde bartender, back and forth between eating her lunch would go pour drinks with her mask around her chin...if she wore it at all. Maybe she felt safe with the shitty plastic squares between her and customers at the bar, but no one else feels great about her pouring our drinks, spewing droplets everywhere. It's really not hard. Keep your mask on when you're not eating. The French dip is still amazing. Everything else has taken a turn into preheated crap. Jalapeño poppers were still frozen in the middle, on lobster grilled cheese, the cheese slices weren't fully melted.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
I came here with a couple of buddies expecting to get a quick meal before a pleasant evening out. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted with careless and inattentive servers. There was a severe level of chaos among the younger ones as they frequently took long trips to the janitorial area to vape together and neglect their duties. I could smell the fumes from the closet and this foul aroma pervaded my nostrils for the rest of the meal. When the food finally arrived I was completely and utterly dissatisfied. The sandwich was very soggy and the drink I ordered was stale and tasteless. Disappointed with my food, I was in a rush to exit the establishment. I felt no need to tip as the service I received was not worthy of any extra payment. One of the teenagers whom I had previously spotted vaping, was upset by this, and demanded I tip her despite her not even being my waitress. She scurried over to her friends to complain about our interaction and slander me in front of my buddies. Not only was I left feeling embarrassed, but also nauseous due to my poor dining experience. Will never be coming back here. Cover Two you have just lost a future customer!
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
Great new place. The place for birthday wings. Have not have a bad meal there yet. Great burger, good beer selection. Nice area in Newtown

Susanne B.

Yelp
Everything I want in a sport bar, service was friendly and prompt. Food was quick, delicious and priced right, nothing pretentious. Televisions everywhere, we will be regulars from now on.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
I ordered a grilled chicken salad and received barely any lettuce. the container it came in To go was basically empty. I've had bigger side salads than this from sushi restaurants. Very disappointed

Jacqueline W.

Yelp
Get the nighthawk burger. You won't be disappointed. Can be super crowded at times, but great spot to watch sports on their large TVs.

Jodi G.

Yelp
They always have nice servers. The bar drinks are very good. I like they use quality cherries. All the bar style food is consistent, good quality, and affordable. This is a family favorite for us. I keep forgetting to come for the birthday wings but they look fun.
google avatar

Chris V.

Yelp
The service from managers and bartenders was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Went to the bar to order a drink told the bartender to please sanitize her hands because she touched her hair, we were sworn at and then the manager came, not thoughtful at all to the customers, told us we were embarrassing. Manager should learn how to manage. No sense of customer service was known from any of the staff. So bad I will never return. Shameful. We did nothing wrong and they acted like we were criminals. Instead of trying to figure out the issue they just kept assaulting us. Pathetic actually. We never go there to cause issues, just to have a good time. Not this time. COVID aside, you don't treat customers that way and for that reason we won't be returning.
google avatar

Frank L.

Yelp
I met a friend at another establishment in town to watch a game on a Sunday afternoon, and after realizing there was a table of twelve children screaming, we decided to walk across the street to Cover Two. There's a difference between the cacophony of screaming kids and the roar of screaming football fans, even if the noise level is the same. Moving over to here was a great choice as there were at least six televisions we could see, and all the major games were being shown. We managed to find seats at the bar, and our bartender was right over to take our order. He dropped off our drinks and a food menu, and, since the bar was busy, went off to serve the next customer. However, he was always there if we needed a refill, or had a question about the menu. My friend saw the fried pickles, and she needed to try them. These were spears, breaded and deep fried, instead of the chips which are mostly coating. A great change! My friend is a fussy eater, and she asked if she could design her own sandwich. This apparently wasn't a problem, and our bartender wrote down everything she wanted. I ordered off the extensive menu: the Chicken Cutlet Deluxe, although, there were at least seven other things that were tempting, which is very unusual since I have trouble finding even one item that I would be interested in. Although the place was packed, both in the bar and the dining room, our food came out quickly and was hot and correct. The fries (which I shouldn't be eating anyway) were the first thing I devoured. Nice and crispy. My friend's sandwich was exactly what she ordered. She ignored her fries, however, and I ended up cleaning them off her plate for her. Overall, a great little sports bar, whether you're into the games or not. Lots of great beers and the not only had the variety of wine I like, but the specific vineyard I prefer. I plan on returning there soon!

Tyler L.

Yelp
Definitely will not be coming back here. Rude, lazy, and careless wait staff were an issue all meal. My 8 year old dropped his fork and our waitress stared at him and just said "really?". The inattention to the details in providing a nice dining experience did not end there. Soggy, cold food coupled with stale, flat drinks made me wonder how this place is still running. Cover Two, you just lost my business for life! (Which I'm seeing is a common trend amongst restaurant goers)

Brian M.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for years. Really great bar food and wings. Staff is friendly. Love the extra hot wing sauce.

Yelp
Went to Cover Two today for lunch. This is a typical sports bar and restaurant. It has many TVs covering sporting events. They have a nice large selection of bottled and draft beer, along with wine and other beverages. The food was average, typical bar food from burgers, salads, etc. Good service and friendly staff of workers. Not a bad place, nothing exciting, good place to have a few drinks, I wouldn't rush back for the food.

james c.

Yelp
I think the place is average at best. Was out with my son and was in the mood for a good bar burger . What I got was a relatively tasty less burger. The fries were good. The burger honestly tasted as if it was baked. It was simply as bland as could be Found it odd to that when I ordered an iced teaabi was told immediately that theRe are no free refills .... uh ok Lastly, in regard to service, it is a bar so I'm not expecting 4 star, but you should train the kids working that clearing a table means more than taking a plate. Take the cutlery, empty glasses, used napkins etc,,, My return is extremely unlikely
google avatar

Katelyn L.

Yelp
Came here with my family and sadly wasn't impressed. We walked into the restaurant/ bar and it was crazy. Very loud and the wait staff seemed overwhelmed. We sat in the back area of the restaurant which was a lot quieter and nice. However, since we were in the back it felt like we were forgotten. Took awhile for our waitress to get organized and it seemed like we had about 4 different people waiting on us which was confusing. When we got our food I got the honey BBQ wings and sadly they were very mediocre and no one offered us any refills on our drinks. However, I will say their onion rings are to die for! Very delicious and massive!

Yelp
My wife and I try to come here ever Thursday as of late. The service is top notch. The rotating beer list is fantastic and the food is great. Amazing location in downtown sandy hook and again the service is great. Even with the crazy Covid-19 scare they kept up the top notch service. One of the best restaurants/bars we have been to since moving to CT.

Yelp
I've never sat down and had a meal here, but I've gotten take out and it was delicious! I got the buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks. The wings were crispy (I recommend getting them well done) and the marinara sauce that came with the mozzarella sticks was amazing. Four stars just because the teenagers at the hostess stand aren't the friendliest, but that wouldn't stop me from ordering here again.

Yelp
The first sports bar I have ever loved. The food is what I love, and it's a bit of a different take on bar food. Sure there are wings and burgers, but here the wings come in dozens of creative flavors as well as the usual "hot, hotter and stupid hot." The burgers are made from excellent fresh beef, which you taste instantly when you order medium rare. And they actually serve medium rare when you ask for it. And then the menu gets interesting. The Philly Cheesesteak egg roll is a favorite, and the kale salad that my friend always gets is actually delicious. These are just a couple of the unexpected, creative treats on the menu. The finishing touch is that the waitstaff is consistently top shelf. Anyone who makes wisecracks about millennials should come here and see the crew doing a great job with great attitudes.
