We stayed at Mission Bay Resort during the week of July 4th and had the chance to try Covewood multiple times. I really wanted to give them four stars, but the food was subpar at best. Let's start with the good parts.
The ambiance was great, with an ocean view next to the beach. They have a fireplace, which we used one day because it was a bit cold outside, and we had to stay outside due to our dogs. The service tended to be slow at times but always with a smile, very friendly and accommodating.
They have a special dog menu for our furry family, which is fantastic. Our dogs tried the chicken dish with farro and carrots. They devoured the chicken and munched on the other items a bit. It came pretty hot with a warning from the waitress. We stirred it a bit and let it cool before giving it to the dogs, and they were just fine. They even had a dessert option with oat milk ice cream and a cookie. Our dogs did not love that one, but they aren't really into cookies, so I wasn't surprised.
Our first experience was with dinner. We started with oysters. My son wanted to have 12 of them. After reading the reviews, I was hesitant to order seafood, so we started with six, and we were all glad we only ordered six. We all struggled to finish those. They were not good. We ordered a few more dishes to share. The Noble Garden Salad was the best of all, fresh and tasty. I also enjoyed the scallops. We had side mushrooms which included a few different types of mushrooms. We all love mushrooms, and they usually do not need much sauce. The sauce overpowered the mushroom taste and made the whole dish bland. My son wanted to have pasta and ordered Wild Shrimp Cavatelli, which was the worst I've ever tried with not much taste. We finished with a Vegan Sundae, and while I was happy to see a vegan option, the brownie was cold and dry. Overall, not impressive.
For lunch, we tried the mango and jicama salad and wood-roasted cauliflower and portobello. Neither of them was impressive. The taste was pretty average. I'm glad the cauliflower was not greasy, but the taste was average, the same with the salad. The Noble Garden was definitely better.
We also tried different breakfast options during the week--pancakes, waffles, French toast--none of them were very good. They weren't bad or anything, but they definitely could have been a lot better. We probably would have dined there a few more times, which would have been really convenient.
