The Top Family-Friendly Restaurants in Dallas | Eater

"Rotisserie chicken is always a “yes,” but it’s especially so when family activities are involved. At Cowboy Chicken, kids will love the games and chances to earn free ice cream, while parents can let their wallets take a breather. On Monday, one adult entrée warrants a free kids meal, while family meal specials are served up on Sundays and Wednesdays. Cowboy Chicken is famous for a dish so family-friendly you’ll want to eat there every night: chicken enchiladas." - Vox Creative

We really enjoyed Cowboy Chicken! We arrived right when they opened and by the time we were leaving the foot traffic was picking up. The staff was friendly and helpful. I had the 3-piece dark plate with street corn and a sweet potato everything was cooked perfectly, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. My spouse went with the chicken tenders, mac n cheese, and street corn definitely a hearty comfort combo. We finished things off with dessert: the chocolate chip cookie was massive (you can choose hard or soft go soft!), and my spouse had the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream, which he thought was just okay. The strawberry lemonade was refreshing, but the cucumber jalapeño lemonade packed way more heat than I expected I had to top it off with regular lemonade to balance it out. Overall, this spot has that homestyle warmth with a modern touch. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Customer for years now. My favorite meal item overall at this chain is their enchiladas. Outstanding. Yum yum yum. This day i tried the Laredo chicken sandwich for the first time. Very nice. Meat wasn't dry as I was concerned about. The chicken cracklings sounded odd since I didn't know what to expect but everything on the sandwich meshes very well. The only thing that made it better was me asking for extra sauce... heavily sauced sandwiches are my preference.

Google
Im leaning more towards a 3.5 then a 4 but since thats not an option I rounded up. Placing my order was easy, the gentleman at the counter was friendly, and my food came out fast. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was dry but the mac and cheese was awesome. The manager walked right past me to clean a table but didnt say hi or how was it.

Google
Been to Dallas many times, but never knew about this local chain. The smoked rotisserie chicken is the star, and well deserved. Enjoyed the rest of the sides and salad. Easy and fast counter service. Recommended, especially if you're not feeling like heavy brisket.

Google
first time here, they have wood flame rotisserie chicken and it was good. they have many different combos, quarter, half or entire chicken and many sides. Good variety of lemonades, tried the lemon with spicy jalapeno and it has a little kick. Everything was awesome, but I'll give it 4 stars for the price. combo of 2 pieces with 2 sides and drink $15 with tax. Good food though.

Google
Ordered through uber eats- it was received 15 mn after placing the order. All items intact and food was hot! Ordered the chicken brisket sandwich- personally, I like a good balance between meat and sauce and this was perfect! Also strawberry shortcake and a cookie- both desserts were huge portions- we shared the shortcake and packed the cookies

Google
I tried this place for the first time today with a friend and I have a mixed review. I ordered the 5 crispy legs and fries and the fries were great, but 1 out of the 5 chicken legs looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours while the other 4 were okay. I ended up tossing that one. I went with the Nashville Hot seasoning and read on another review that it was not hot, but I did not image that it would have 0 heat. The cucumber jalapeno lemonade had more heat than the legs. My friend ordered a meal that had a sweet potato and the first one she received also looked like it was sitting under a heat lamp for hours so she returned it. The second one was fine, but her roll ended up being hard and cold. She enjoyed the rest of her food, so there was some hits(rotisserie chicken). The customer service was great and we even had someone offer to clear our table as soon as we were done eating, but they REALLY need someone good in charge of quality control of the food that goes out to the customer. I would say they wasn't anything impressionable enough for me to return.

Google
Really good grilled chicken with a cool atmosphere! Didn't plan on getting corn when I entered... but it was better than a lot of the Mexican corn I've had, even staying in the oak cliff area. The sauce was a nice addition too. Twice baked potatoes were as to be expected. The corn surprised me!

Yelp
First, I'm grateful to Cowboy Chicken for offering a Thanksgiving plate special this past Thanksgiving when I had COVID and was unable to spend the holiday with family - I was able to salvage the day with an enjoyable meal, albeit alone. I've been back multiple times since to order their three-piece dark rotisserie chicken plate, and enjoy this place more each time I go there. I have a long history as a Boston Market customer (and even worked there in college when it was Boston Chicken), and although poor business practice has mostly phased it out of the fast casual scene, I still look to Boston Market as a comfort food standard. If you're familiar with Boston Market and are looking for that kind of homestyle meal, Cowboy Chicken's wood fire rotisserie chicken is right there. You can order a dark or white entree with sides or family meals with a whole chicken. Cowboy Chicken also offers wings, salads, and sandwiches. I go there for the rotisserie chicken, but if that isn't your thing, there's a lot to choose from. To me, a good chicken place also needs to be able to offer quality sides and Cowboy Chicken has a plethora of them: Mashed potatoes, rachero beans, green beans and a lot more. I'm still exploring Cowboy Chicken's vast menu so I haven't quite found a side I love as much as the Twice Baked Potaters, but I'm confident I'll get there. For $7 more, you can also have a side of brisket. Honestly, it didn't speak to me the first time I ordered it. I tried again on my more recent trip, and it was great. Not sure that it's $7 great, but I was hungry and in the mood for meat so I'm glad I got it and will order it again. Fast casual places usually leave a lot to be desired when it comes to customer service, but I'm always impressed by the friendliness of the Cowboy Chicken staff. When comfort food is what you need, giddy up!

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick lunch and decided to try the Nashville Hot chicken tenders. Nashville was not hot; not in spice, and not in temperature. Flavor was mild, and the tenders were a little dry, like they took a wrong turn at juicy and just kept giddying. The place itself is clean and friendly, and the menu's got plenty of options if rotisserie's your thing. Service was fast, and I'll give them credit, this is a solid upgrade over your average fast casual chain. But for $13 tenders, I was expecting a little more kick and a little less cardboard. Might come back to try the rotisserie chicken everyone's hyped about, but the tenders didn't quite do it for me. Yeehaw.. I guess.

Yelp
I love this place for the rotisserie chicken. Their double baked potato is delicious too. It always disappears when get take out. Their beans and rice have a lot of flavor too. This is a fast casual restaurant. The orders come out prompt and there is plenty of seating. The service was good for a fast casual restaurant. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I relocated here from Kentucky 2 months ago. I have tried several wing places. Cowboy Chicken........... baby. Enough said! I will be back for sure. Thank You Kim Brandenburg

Yelp
There are many chicken places out there, but how many of them serve rotisserie chicken instead of fried one? Probably not too much! And how doesn't LOVE rotisserie chicken? Anyway, had to try it while in TX and boy do I wish they'd come to Colorado! I had BBQ Chicken Sandwich with pulled meat, and a buddy of mine had a three piece dark plate. We both agreed that more places like this should exist, and people that live within 10 min driving distance a super lucky. And of course, loved the whole atmosphere there - kind of feels like a Texas BBQ place, but it's all about chicken. Highly recommend and I'll be back once I'm nearby.
google avatar

Lorin J.

Yelp
Chicken is bland. Quality is not what it used to be. Tastes like rotisserie chicken with no seasoning. Very underwhelmed.
google avatar

Kou L.

Yelp
Great service, good food, and plenty of seats! I was hoping to get some chard bbq flavor from the chicken in my salad, but I wasn't getting that. Nonetheless, the salad was good. The ambiance is nice and with moderate noise, depending on how busy it gets.
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
A fresh rotisserie chicken place. I was in a rush so I just ordered a chicken sandwich. It was fresh chicken breast carved off the chicken, not out of the freezer. It wasn't dry by any means but could've used a bit more salt. It came with fried chicken skin fried hard which tasted a bit like pork rinds. Personally I could've done with that tidbit however I'm inclined to go back as the menu looked pretty good. They do have a picture window to see the chickens on a spit roasting over the open fire which I failed to get a picture of as I was in a rush.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
I've been to this location multiple and it's always super busy. It's best to call in or order online. However, my wait has never been unbearable. I alright get the Qtr White or Drumstick Kid's meal. The food has always been up to par and the customer service is great. No complaints.
google avatar

Lareine M.

Yelp
Something about this Cowboy Chicken experience doesn't reflect the brand or the origin of "Cowboy Chicken." Very disappointing--the food was served completely cold. My mashed potatoes and green beans were both cold, and overall the meal was unbelievable in the worst way and frankly disgusting.

R W.

Yelp
Food was amazing. We tried the tenders and brisket, no disappointment. Service was good. We had a chance to sit outside in the evening breeze. We had a good family meal
google avatar

Jorge D.

Yelp
Typical TX fast food chain. Service was quick. It had a casual vibe, and the food is made fresh.

Lolly R.

Yelp
First time we were heading to the fav BBQ in Arlington so happy they were closed (early) so checked local none of them serve good BBQ FACTOID. Found Cowboy Chicken and so thankful! Wonderful food hubby had 1/2 chicken I had perfectly smoked brisket not dry or stringy and moist to last flavorful bite they had wide selection of fountain dr nks not the usual bla bla mines was Jalaneño/cucumber mixed with touch of strawberry lemonade! This is now our most fav bbq.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Placed an order for maybe 30 people ahead of time. It was not ready when it was supposed to be, food and sauces were missing, sauces were spilled all over. This was a mess and we wont be doing any more group orders here.
google avatar

Shubha S.

Yelp
Efficient service, large quantities and tasty food! Consistent quality over the years. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
My favorite fast casual chicken restaurant. The chicken is delicious and I love the cafeteria-style sides. The banana pudding and brisket are excellent also. Recommend!
google avatar

Catherine T.

Yelp
1st time customer. Great Mediterranean Chicken Salad! Has crispy pieces so Thru it to make it tasty and interesting! Comes with Chili lime sauce. Also had their wings that were good and the fries were very good and crispy. We shared a strawberry shortcake that was very good. And, you don't want to miss the Watermelon Tea. Surprisingly good!

Katherine A C.

Yelp
$13 for these toothpick chicken tenders. They used to give pretty sizable portions but this has swung way far in the other direction.
google avatar

Angela N.

Yelp
Food was great! I had the 1/4 white chicken with broccoli and Mac and cheese! The broccoli is tangy but delish like they used lemon with seasoning! The chicken was so GOOD! I went with my work team so I'll show you their plates too! Good lunch spot, good for groups, and lots of seating.
google avatar

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
The rotisserie chicken is amazing! Flavorful and well-seasoned. I love taking it home to create meals during the week. The wings are pretty good. Not as good as the rotisserie to me. The sides are mostly ok. I do like the seasoning on the fries. The roll is almost like a school cafeteria roll (in a good way) but just a little different.

Yelp
I live nearby and have passed by this spot which is sort of tucked away in a strip mall surrounded by 25+ other restaurants. On appearance, it looks like a standard chicken joint done rotisserie style. There was ample parking so I swung in. Much to my surprise the menu is well beyond the rotisserie chicken that is actually wood fired using local wood. I was hungry af and asked the CSR what the deal with the enchiladas was. She said they were bomb.com- so I said let's do it. While I was waiting the cook brought out my food and I told the story of how I had passed by many times, but never went in to try. And that I thought it was purely like El Pollo Loco. I asked if the chicken was good and the cook said most definitely. I was actually going to order some if I was still hungry after the enchiladas. As I was eating the cook brought out out a sample thigh and leg. Just get over here. Service was outstanding. Food was 10 stars. Price is fair. I will be back tomorrow.
google avatar

Dustin H.

Yelp
Service was fast and friendly at this location, food came out in a fair amount of time. All items were pretty good, a few little tweaks here and there would make it better. Immediately coming into the building you smell that wood fire smell and it is good! Love seeing the rotating chickens getting cooked. Price is fair for all items we got to try. I would recommend this place and I hope to come back again.

Kimba M.

Yelp
I've been coming to cowboys chicken for over 10 years. Last time I came. I got mac & cheese and it was not the same, came back today again almost a year later mac & cheese again is not (cheddar )like what it used to be , the baked mac & cheese they used to have was really good whats going on Mac & cheese with serve Cold and flavorless paid $15++ Chicken was dry and and cold I came early before noon it was not even busy Sad sad sad Seems like price increasing and food quality is going down plunging quickly
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Good service, but menu has changed. The 2 main things my family likes have been removed from menu so unfortunately will probably not frequent this restaurant any longer.

Don M.

Yelp
Chicken was moist and tender with terrific flavor . Okra was a little undercooked but good. Twice potatoes wet the bomb. Would highly recommend. Clean service was good. Staff friendly.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
We had an office luncheon catered for 20. This was my first time hearing of, or even having Cowboy Chicken. The chicken was Slap Yo Momma Good for sure, but the green beans and potatoes were only alright. However, I definitely want to go to this location and check em out as they have a great looking menu.

Yelp
I have ordered online for my employees Thanksgiving lunch. There were many issues: 1. Waited for my curbside order for half an hour. Tried to call and it was going to busy signal multiple times . Went in to pick it up myself and had to wait in a long line of other people waiting for their order pick ups. 2. Delivery was not offered 3. Once we started to eat, 2 of our meals had hair in it. One of them had multiple hairs of multiple colors. 4. We called, to complain and the manager was non-apologetic and not surprised. We will not be repeating this place for any other company luncheons. They ruined the atmosphere of our Thanksgiving lunch. Horrible experience.
google avatar

Kendra B.

Yelp
Sadly, this place does not get a pass. They ruined our offices Thanksgiving meal. From start to finish the experience was pretty awful. The order was placed in advance, and it still took an hour for it to be ready. The peach cobbler was not palatable and two of the four dishes we ordered had hairs (not our own) in the plates. I wasn't even able to eat it! If not for my habit of checking my meal, I probably would have eaten it!! When we called to notify the restaurant, the manager didn't introduce himself and seemed unphased by the experience we had. Would not recommend, spend your money elsewhere!

Yelp
I walked into this place and was the only person in the restaurant, besides the staff! I paid for a salad and saw the food preparer on his cell phone right in my view. He stuck his finger in his nose and wiped it on his sleeve. He proceeded to dig in his ear while still on his cell phone.I asked the cashier if my salad was going to be made he told the guy on the phone an order was up and he didn't wash his hands, put on gloves and wiped his nose with the gloves on! I took the food but couldn't bear to eat it! I told the cashier what I witnessed and that I couldn't eat this trash He just shrugged and promised he would let manager know. I won't be coming back if that guy is working. Everybody there acts like they hate their jobs! I heard their tamales were great.but if they can't get the cleanliness of the staff work I won't be back
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped by for a late lunch in between meetings and was pretty hungry because I didn't have any breakfast. Hangry, perhaps. The Stampede Crossing shopping center has several things to choose from. I went to Cowboy Chicken because the smell of the wood fire grill pulled me in. I like that they tried to go for some aesthetic components in the decor. I'll give them some kudos for that. Rustic vibes. It is casual dining and is set up to order your meal, take a number and be seated. The server was friendly enough and I was seen quickly to order. I tried the brisket combo and had twice baked potatoes and Mexican street corn as my side. The chicken was very moist and flavorful, I wasn't as much of a fan of the brisket. It had a very stringy watered down taste without a lot of flavor and bits of fat that wasn't great. The potatoes and corn were both really nice, I would definitely order them again. The restaurant wasn't too clean, waiting for the restroom there were bags of trash in the hallway and the bathroom definitely needed some attention and some toilet paper. The floors throughout the restaurant were pretty dirty and needed a good sweeping, lots of piled up plates. For quick service I would definitely be back for the chicken but probably for a takeout from this location.

Ekta T.

Yelp
Amazing chicken. Everything tastes great. Their Laredo chicken sandwich is worth every penny. Tender chicken is nicely seasoned, the guacamole and the chicken strips were . You should try their hot sauce as well. Very good experience. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Flavor less and dry. People raved about this place. So disappointed. Chicken is dry, everything is covered in black pepper and the twice baked potato is actually hash brown casserole. The chicken taste smoked and not rotisseried.

Mark T.

Yelp
the chicken was not good, the serving of brisket was less than i was told. i will never go back i recommend that if you go out to eat you select another restaurant
google avatar

Brandi M.

Yelp
The worst banana pudding I've ever had. It tastes like it's made with a pudding pack and they added nasty stale cookies in it. With no actual bananas. The peach cobbler is dry and mushy.
google avatar

Dennis S.

Yelp
You might not want to choose the garden salad as one of your sides. There was an awful lot of brown lettuce in the large garden salad side we just got. The just drumsticks options are still a good way to avoid their dry breasts, and the bbq sauce they use, if you choose that flavor, is pretty tasty. The twice baked is an ok hearty potato casserole side, and the mexican street corn has a nice kick to it. But overall, after repeated orders, I'd say this is more of an ok occasional pick up than something I'd crave to have regularly.
google avatar

Sumi J.

Yelp
This place isn't quite for me. It's kind of like a Boston Market however, I'd go here before Boston Market. I tried the 2 piece dark special with green beans and Ranchero beans. The meat was good; basic rotisserie, nothing special. I do wish they added a little cup of their sauce. I saw it on the table but I didn't think to pour it on my take out meal. I will say that the chicken was juicy. Nothing about it was dry. The green beans were bland but to be fair, the description says seasoned with black pepper. They were fresh and crisp. The Ranchero Beans were by far the best thing I got. They had a nice kick to it. I'd come back just for these beans. The roll was super soft. I came here on a Sunday evening during the football and it was super slow. There was plenty of parking. If you want a cheapish meal, give it a try. The 2 dark piece special was $10.

Yelp
I'm glad we had driven by here a few times that I remembered that I had wanted to try it! There are a number of good restaurants in this area and this acts as a wonderful quick service option. Staff was friendly and helpful for first time visit. The food came out way quicker than expected! Everything we had was outstanding, I might even plan a time to get the veggie/side plate to be able to try all of the sides because those fries & mac n cheese knocked it out of the park! The bbq chicken sandwich was good & I was pleasantly surprised by the enchiladas that we tried. Totally planning a second or third trip the next few times we are in the area!
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Cowboy Chicken is one of my favorites. I think their Chicken Enchiladas are the best. Their half chicken is also really good. Each of their sides are great. We love their fries and their fried okra but if you are getting it to-go, then skip those two because they don't travel well. The mac and cheese is great and somewhat surprisingly, their desserts are the best.
google avatar

Naveen R.

Yelp
First time experience at a Cowboy Chicken and I liked it! I had the Dark meat platter, which comes with three pieces of dark meat chicken (thighs, drumstick) and two sides. Sides I opted for were creamed spinach and fried okra. The chicken was cooked to perfection - not over or under, perfectly moist, and the chicken skin had the perfect amount of seasoning. The okra was done well, not slimy or with too much batter, while the creamed spinach (though a bit heavy handed on the sodium) was done well. I was astounded by the number of options they had on hand in terms of sides, and if every further experience I have was as satisfactory as this one, I may just about end up sampling every option they have.
google avatar

P S.

Yelp
Underwhelming. Very blah. I had the chicken with a salad. Not fond of the cheese crips or the chicken crispy things. Also had the cheesy potatoes and the texture seemed like rice. Seats are incredibly worn, walls are dirty. Also that awkward "are you supposed to clean up after yourself or not...?" is definitely not clear.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Reasonable prices and the portions are great, good value for the money. I just felt the chicken was pretty bland and needed more seasoning. The texture also felt a bit weird like, not very dense? It may just have been the pieces I got. The twice baked potato is more like a potato-shaped clump of hash browns. All in all it's OK but I'm just not crazy about it.
google avatar

J. S.

Yelp
Dry flavorless mess. But the okra was good. That's all have to say about this place.
google avatar

Christopher V.

Yelp
Cowboy Chicken is easily 4 stars relative to their competition. Think Boston Market only better chicken, sides, salads, desserts AND service. A couple times the chicken was salty, but no big deal. All of the sides are good especially the creamed spinach and potatoes. It's also clear they are very intentional about providing excellent customer service. They also deliver.
google avatar

Yolanda H.

Yelp
This location is in a good spot for a lunch crowd. The staff is prompt and willing to answer questions about the menu. This visit I tried the Durango style Bolero Bowl. It was ok, one of the sauces didn't really do it for me. I think it was the red sauce on the bowl. The bowl had rice beans chicken and other cucumber Tomato relish like toppings and onions. It was enough for two or a lunch and a dinner meal. I've had their rotisserie chicken meals many time before. They even have enchiladas made with shredded chicken and a creamy sauce. Not bad at all.
google avatar

Breanna T.

Yelp
If you like really salty + spicy (we like spicy and this was too much) then this is your place. My daughter and I got the elote tacos which would have been good but I had to almost spit it out because the amount of salt and sooooo much jalapeños used. Our elote corn side could not be eaten because the salt and spice used. Insane. My sons kids meal chicken he had to spit out .. so I tried the skin and realized why, again... SO MUCH SALT. I told the girl at the front and she just kinda looked at me and laughed. Then she told some other dude who then told her basically who cares. Customer service isn't right and because of this experience my family and I won't be returning. Smells way too good here to taste like THAT.

Beca D.

Yelp
I eat here (Irving location) frequently with friends, and the food is always very good! But one thing that really irritates me is the loud, grating noise of the chairs when moved across the floor! The sound is so loud and annoying that it just ruins my meal. Please put cork or rubber tips on the chairs. It wouldn't be that expensive, but it surely would make everyone's dining experience a lot more pleasant! Thanks for letting me vent!

Jose J.

Yelp
Second time getting this catered. Chicken is dry, doesn't have any seasoning, and undercooked.
google avatar

Chandra J.

Yelp
Went here randomly yesterday and really enjoyed their food. I had trouble deciding what I wanted, but finally ordered the quarter white meal that came with two sides and a roll. For my sides I got their green beans and potaters (not potatoes, but potaters). It took a while for my food to come out, but I discovered why as their chicken is freshly rotisseried with wood in house that I passed on the way to the restroom. And the chicken was super fresh, a little bit salty, but oh so good, especially with their home made hot sauce that has just the right amount of burn for you to keep eating. The sides I got were super yummy as well. Only suggestion would be to turn down the salt and improve the service just a little.
google avatar

Kurt V.

Yelp
Came here today for lunch and it was ok, just ok, nothing special. Here is the breakdown: Food: 1.5 stars. I got the barbecue chicken sandwich. It was dried up chicken smothered in barbecue sauce with shredded cheese slapped on a toasted bun. I would never order it again, it is obviously where their old dried up chicken goes for one last chance to sell to some unsuspecting customer. The "twice baked potato, should more honestly be called "hash brown casserole ", because that is more what it was, and even then it was marginal at best. The only thing holding this 1.5 stars for food up to that is the Apple Cobbler, it was pretty good. Service: 3 stars. Good folks working hard. Their service is way too slow though. We waited 12 minutes for our order to arrive and that was the first meal at the table. 4-5 minutes later another meal arrived. Price, way too much for what we got. I have been to Cowboy Chicken before and had a much better experience, but not this location. I would not go back to this location.
