On the Grid : Callister Brewery

"The new kid on the block. Callister’s space is incredible—industrial and windowless from the outside, but naturally lit and bright on the inside. Though it’s a little out of the way, the beer is just as good as more centrally located competitors’. This is a great place to begin (or end) a brewery bike tour." - WoodType

A cozy little brewery, with great beer! Just a heads up, although CDBC loves dogs, our furry friends aren’t currently allowed in the tasting room due to restrictions by the Health Authority. The owner is working on patio approvals though!

TL:DR - amazing beer and ambiance. Definitely take the detour from the local “big boys” and visit here, you won’t be disappointed! … When I first heard about CowDog, to be honest the logo and general brand looked absolutely terrible, that it was somewhere that felt cheap, “toy like” or AI generated and just felt the beers would be the same sort of lame pet project. Especially for a new brewery usually needing time to settle in like Faculty and Adina when they first opened were dreadful. I was passing by in the area and thought I’d give a flight a go at the least. Really surprised all the beers were exceptional, nice range of flesh flavours that aren’t “too crafty” for only beardos to enjoy. There are styles for everyone. Brewmaster has done an exceptional job with what’s on offer, personal favourites being the Pats Cask and Lite Lager 2. The ambience is cool (vibe) and cool (temp) great artwork on the walls and once it finds its footing it would be great to see this take on more of a personality than the eminent that remain of stepping into the dead shoes of Callister Brewing before it. All in all, in a saturated craft beer market this place does enough to stand out for now, but needs to work a bit harder for it to be a destination as it’s a little off the track for a typical experience that others around are already doing. Hopefully it’ll get some outdoor space allocated in summer for garden games, patio drinking and whatnot to be more immersive. Should help make some buzz locally! Keep up the great work, can’t wait to see how CowDog bounds into the next future staple “Big Boy” of Yeast Van!

Just walked in, grabbed what will now be my summer time favorite! Friendly staff, great beer, and quick service. The Cow Dog Big Teefs IPA now has a reserved spot in my fridge for the summer. Can't wait to see what else they brew next!!

Great little brewery, tasty beers, big upgrade to Callister. Can't wait to visit for some patio beers in the summer, as this location gets the best sunsets.

Super nice people running this brewery. Have only tried their beers from a liquor store in store tasting as well as a few farmers markets. The few beers I've tasted have been good. They would love some support right now so check them out at their brewery location.

Yelp
Looks like Callister has now been replaced by CowDog. The place is named after the owner's dog (nickname). Parking is plentiful on the side streets. The place looks pretty much unchanged from Callister, which makes sense. In fact they're still using the old Callister paddles and glasses. Nothing wrong with that to be honest. Might as well save some costs while the new owners get the place ramped up. I guess the most obvious change would be the artwork (for sale) on the walls. Staff are friendly, The guy who poured my beer was new to the country and didn't have the best English, but I was able to get my order through. The place seems to specialize in ales and lagers. Nothing too fancy or out there. Personally I like the lemon shark quite a bit. The other beers to be honest didn't really stand out. Not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing (I've had brews that stood out in a bad way at other places), but worth mentioning. Guessing they're still working out the kinks at this point. Maybe best to give them a few more weeks or months to work everything out. I wouldn't mind coming back at some point.
