It's been awhile, but I remember one day walking on Las Olas and seeing a coming soon sign. The sign was for Coyo Taco and I kept thinking hmm, this is bound to get interesting.
Years ago, I had gone to the original Coyo Taco in Wynwood and all I remembered were a lot of churros that I didn't really get to enjoy as I sprained my ankle badly. I figured enough time had passed since then, and well, let's get real - I wanted to see if this place lived up to the so-called hype.
I should add to that this is near where I work, and my coworkers and I are always looking for new lunch options!
Anyway, time passed and I saw the sign they officially were opening up on Valentine's Day. Consequently, I told my coworker we should go when the dust settled. We went today and were a bit confused as to how this place worked. I mean, they have both indoor and outdoor seating, and people were sitting at the bar and at the tables. Going in, too, you had a cashier.
Needless to say, we fumbled about and had no idea whether to sit and get table service or order at the counter. Turns out we went to the counter and they told us we could either order there or when sitting at the bar. The bar looked nice, so we went and sat there. The bartender, Andres, immediately attended us and gave us menus.
We more-or-less knew what we would order. Tacos, of course! My coworker ordered both the pollo al carbón tacos and the beef birria tacos. I had the carne asada tacos as I had a huge craving for them, as well as an elote. Everything was delicious, but the portions for the tacos were atypical. I'm used to seeing three tacos in an order, not two, especially for the price. $10ish or so for a couple of tacos? Meh, me no likely.
We then went to town and got two orders of churros. These churros were massive with both caramel and chocolate sauce. They did take awhile to get though. Service was a bit slow, but this is just opening week. We're sure they'll eventually be fully prepped for the lunch crowd.
For now... my final thoughts are simply.... A little pricey, a little trendy - Coyo Taco will do just fine in Fort Lauderdale.
