15 Must-Try Astral Margaritas in Orange County | Eater

"A colorful, no-frills cantina with sweeping ocean views, Coyote Grill is a quintessential Laguna Beach hangout. Its casual, hole-in-the-wall charm feels easygoing, while the covered back patio — with a fireplace for cooler nights — adds some warmth. The menu highlights fresh seafood, from buttery lobster dishes to classic Mexican plates. The strawberry cucumber margarita with Astral Blanco is a refreshing pick, best enjoyed before a quick walk down to the beach. Just note — parking is valet only, so plan accordingly." - McConnell Quinn

We sat indoor patio seat, it was nice and neat. The coconut shrimp is the best one Ive ever had. It was really crispy but not too greasy or sweet. Salsa sauce with shrimp is the best.

Great ocean view along with great food and drink. Appetizers are excellent. We shared street corn and bacon wrapped shrimp whilst enjoying our very tasty margaritas. They have several margarita options. Plenty of delicious entree options to choose from. Our two couples split chicken fajitas and tacos Al carbon. Both were delicious. Good bar area if you want to watch a game and enjoy food and drink. We sat on the back with windows open and nice breeze and ocean sounds. They have a pretty robust happy hour menu, I believe it was 3-6pm every day.

Everything about this place screams “authentic”. It is Mexican food. And it’s great. It’s expensive. But the quality is there. So are the views. If you don’t want to pay for parking, park directly across the street in the neighborhood. Kids menu is awesome!

Google
Coyote Grill is a nice little place in South Laguna that could easily be missed if you're in the driver seat watching out for pedestrians. It is on the beach side of PCH and has a nice view of the Pacific Ocean. On this particular visit, I was heading to the beach, but the marine layer was still keeping things a bit cool, so we stopped in for breakfast. Their menu is original, and their food is reliably great. Atmosphere is very chill, but service was quite good and timely. This is one of my new favorite places.

Google
Coyote Grill is a fantastic spot for tacos! They have a great selection, and on Taco Tuesday, you can order all night starting at 3 PM. Every taco I tried was delicious especially the calamari tacos! The crab ceviche and guacamole were also amazing. The atmosphere is super casual and relaxed, with a beautiful ocean view. The only thing missing was a little background music to enhance the vibe. Otherwise, everything was yummy, and I’ll definitely be coming back for more! Would highly recommend! 🌮🌊😊

Google
This place is really close to being a must go to spot. It's location is great, you get a great view of the ocean. The only thing that could be better is the food was a little under seasoned. I appreciate that it wasn't greasy or over salted, but even the salsa left us wishing for a bit more flavor. Overall if their food could be appropriately seasoned this would be a 5 star all around place.

Food was nice, we got a burrito and taco’s the taco’s were delicious burrito was good but I’ve had better.

Yelp
The service and ambiance is always great! This time I tried the Tempura Shrimp Tacos and the Street Corn, and they were so delicious! Both were served nice and hot with an abundance of fresh flavors. They're both a must try alongside a pomegranate margarita on the rocks, and a hot basket of chips and freshly made yummy salsa. I also recommend the sizzling Fajitas accompanied with flavorful veggies and warm tortillas! You can smell this dish from a mile away. Stuffed quesadilla (I get steak) is a top notch in my book as well. Love the ranchera sauce on top! Sooo good! Oh, I can't forget the beautiful ocean view and their decent prices. Well worth the visit!

Yelp
We enjoyed those calamari tacos and a cheese enchiladas. The service was very nice and very helpful. The view is amazing. The food looks wonderful, so colorful and displayed with full portions. I do believe if I were an East Coast person, the food would have tasted incredible. I think the food is bland and lacks flavor. It looks great, but doesn't have that passion or flare of a professional chef making it. It is just Okay.

Yelp
Great service we were greeted by everyone coming in and thanked when we were leaving. Everyone was so nice. Food was so good the Fish tacos were yummy and had a lot of flavor. Paired that with a Coyote margarita so good! Excellent ocean view on the patio

Yelp
Coyote Grill is my favorite spot for birthdays, celebrations, Sunday brunch, or just a random Tuesday. Their patio is to die for and we always try to get a reservation for it, sometimes we even see whales :) Service is quick and their staff is happy to please. My parents love their breakfast as they have both Mexican and American options, but their dinner menu is fabulous too!
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants of all time in South OC! We came for Mother's Day brunch and it is always perfect! We were seated quickly and had a table overlooking the water. We ordered the huevos rancheros, hubs ordered the machaca, son had French toast, shared guacamole, salsa and chips and margs. It was all delicious with great service. It ALWAYS hits!
google avatar

Bill A.

Yelp
Excellent spot good California Mexican food. Started the guacamole. We had a choice of creamy or chunky guac. The chunky was excellent, it was simple and good. You could taste the hint of lime. Our server was good and she recommended the calamari tacos. I ordered the fish tacos as I had a craving for good fish tacos. The tacos did not disappoint, good flavor and cooked very well. My friend when with the tacos trio. One of those were calamari and he said they were good enough that he would only order that next time. The margaritas were very good and you could tell they were freshly made.

Yelp
Well im so glad i was exhausted and hungry after work, i just stumbled upon possibly my new favorite happy hour! I ordered the street taco trio carnitas and fish. The chips and pico are really good! Great spot for a casual date. Valet is $4 and the public lot a few steps south of the restaurant is free. Bring your squad... There's a wildly dangerous menu of very delicious margaritas featuring pitchers... Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Love it here! Little hole in the wall, local type place. Has a cute patio with heaters. It's a pretty classic Mexican menu focused more on seafood. Highly recommend the spicy salsa. Everything we got was absolutely delicious. Happy hours have amazing food and cocktail options! The parking is valet for $4 (plus tip).

Yelp
I purchased the 36 inch built in coyote pellet grill. I am so happy with it! I confidently make the best smoked barbecued brisket over a 12 hour period, ribs grilled for three hours, pizzas directly on the grill at 600° which are the best ever! Chicken breast, hot dogs, burgers, steaks, pork chops. It is amazing! Seriously, call me at 925-968-8115 if you want tips on grilling certain food items. There is a learning curve but it is a fun one. The grill itself is of the highest quality. Stainless steel, 304 grade. The grill plates, are very easy to clean. The LED screen is user-friendly. It is my baby in the backyard! I coupled it with a Z line 48 inch hood and other components from the barbecue guys. I've been using this grill now for about six months. Absolutely no complaints. Also want to mention something very important. Customer service has been excellent. The original grill hood had a slight dent in it from shipping. Not Coyotes's fault or the barbecue guys but an obvious dent created during shipping. I called coyote and they were extremely quick to get me a new hood. Their customer service is outstanding! I could easily become a representative for their product because it is so impressive. And it looks so beautiful in my backyard. But the best part is it just makes outdoor cooking so much fun. Seriously, the searing feature works better than I thought it would. On the high sear setting, you can grill a moderately thick steak with the grill marks and a slight dark brown color caramelizing the outside of the meat while keeping it juicy and tender inside. And the smoke feature is amazing! I set a brisket on at 10 PM and took it off at 10 the next morning. Neighbors came over and they said it was the best brisket they ever had!!

Yelp
Service was great our server was super nice, beer was well priced at least during happy hour when I was there. However the food was less than stellar. It's definitely white people mexican food, the esquite tasted like the corn probably came from a can and the tacos were really just meh. Beans and rice was standard, could have been better but could have been worse. Left feeling a bit sick. Anywho the patio was nice, probably a great place for some drinks outside but wouldn't be my go to for food ever.

Yelp
I used to come here a lot (like 10-15 years ago), and loved it, plus seriously missed the calamari tacos! We ordered the plainer guac which is very plain avocado mash so I'd recommend the spicier one. It was a pretty small bowl of guac too but we really didn't need more. It was tasty. The tacos would've been really good, but the calamari breading was way, way too salty! Maybe it was an off day for the calamari seasoning. The other toppings were delicious. The burritos were also just ok, and the red sauce on top wasn't the best. Things we love about coyote grill: It overlooks the ocean, the service is wonderful and attentive, you can get a fun drink in a gorgeous setting, and it is surprisingly very quick to get food. Parking is not ideal so make sure to plan ahead on busy days or valet it for $4.

Yelp
We stopped in at Coyote Grill while in Laguna looking for a breakfast spot with a view of the ocean. They have a covered patio that gave us that view and ambience we were looking for on a casual weekday morning. They have valet parking for $4 and I believe it's cash only. It made parking very convenient. The service was friendly and prompt. I always test out a new spot by trying their eggs benedict. It was pretty good but there wasn't anything extra wow or different from other local cafes... I did wish that their salsa was a bit spicy. The salsa instead was more of a tomato pico de gallo...

Paige D.

Yelp
Food is amazing and service is even better! Can't wait to come back. Mark is also such a fun time! 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in Laguna! Wait is never too long even when it's super busy, valet is inexpensive and makes it super easy. The patio is the best with amazing view and the service is always top notch. I always order the shrimp tacos and they are definitely some of the best ones I've ever had. We love the salsa and ordering calamari. My fiancé likes the chicken burrito and honestly everything that they make is so delicious. I wish we lived closer because their happy hour is amazing as well, and can't forget to mention their house margarita is delicious and strong.
google avatar

Yelp
We made a reservation for their Baja Style Lobster which only comes around once a year. We ordered a lobster with the trimmings; it was cooked perfectly and the extras (beans, rice, tortillas, butter, cilantro, onions) were fresh. The restaurant is small and in desperate need of updating; especially their back area! The service was excellent; our server was courteous, helpful and quick. We started with a margarita and an order of guacamole and chips. All in all, the food was good! The shocker was the price of the lobster!!! $110 for a small spiny lobster is CRAZY expensive; we can say we tried it but we wouldn't do it again!

Yelp
I'm a huge breakfast burrito lover so the egg burrito was calling my name...kind of. I changed the ranchero sauce to salsa verde and the black beans to refried pinto beans. It satisfied my craving but I can't say it was some of the best I've had. The flavors didn't meld together as well but I appreciated that it came with a side of sour cream and guac. I also tried the aguachile as an appetizer and this was a delicious way to start the meal. I love very acidic, tangy flavors and this was heavy on the lime and high on the heat so it was a great combo. There's a lot of workers here so it's easy to get their attention and they also check in on you. I highly recommend dining in the indoor patio-like area since there are tables overlooking the ocean and ceiling decorated with colorful flags and luscious plants.

Yelp
Great standard Mexican restaurant in the area. Very conveniently located with a fantastic view of the ocean from the patio. It has a small facade and is relatively unassuming looking, but the food was good. I got the chicken quesadilla and my friends both got the street tacos. It was a great way to end a morning spent at Laguna!
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
They need new staff. The waitresses are fine, but the managers are completely out of control like to be argumentative about everything.
google avatar

Victoria V.

Yelp
Came here after a long beach day and was definitely not disappointed! Despite it being a sunday afternoon we were seated quickly and the servers were very attentive and friendly as well. We got to sit on the patio and the view of the ocean was amazing! I ordered the mimosa drink and it was very decently sized for the price and not too sweet either definitely the perfect refreshing drink after a beach day. We ordered the chicken burrito and enchilada and both were very good and filling as well. Would definitely recommend this spot after a morning at the beach!
google avatar

Yelp
Located in south Laguna, Coyote Grill is all about the quaint Baja-esque atmosphere and locals type feel. Their food is more tame than I prefer and leans more tex-mex; their salsa needs salt and seasoning, their food has no kick, and you'll get plenty of melty yellow cheese. Nevertheless, I like it here! They make excellent fresh margaritas (pomegranate being my favorite, their serrano margarita is also delicious but insanely spicy) and their back open air patio has a straight view of the ocean. A couple food items that stand out are their zucchini enchiladas and their crispy tacos. They don't use pre-made taco shells here - they are fresh made to order which yields the tastiest crispy taco! As for some of their top sellers, it's their calamari and coconut shrimp. Pro tip: After your meal take a walk a few steps away down to Table Rock Beach.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
TERRIBLE SERVICE do not come here unless you want to be harassed by managers. Didn't even finish ordering my food. I did nothing besides try to order and they were completely unprofessional and RUDE. DO NOT COME HERE. ZERO STARS.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Coyote Grill is a great place to enjoy brunch with a small to medium group size of friends! The selling point is definitely the patio view that overlooks the ocean on a sunny day. The decor really sets the tone of the food. I enjoyed the oyster shot, calamari, guacamole the most! I'd come back for the calamari alone. It had a great chew and texture to it that I still think about. I thought the oyster wasn't the most fresh but I came out ok and still enjoyed it. The mushroom omelette left me a little bummed. I didn't think it was anything special nor did it have a ton of taste. It's just an egg scramble with mushrooms. Even the salsa couldn't help it. We had a great experience with the quick service though. It was so great, we provided a hefty tip. Aside from the food, overall, we'd come back again!
google avatar

Asal B.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican food spots with a great view. Portions are huge so always end up with left overs.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
The blackened calamari tacos are worth the trip there. They have other good options too.
google avatar

Walter R.

Yelp
I love the Happy Hour at the Coyote! The Calamari Tacos are the best in LAGUNA ! They also have some "secret Menu " wings that are fantastic! I love the fact that the locals are treated like family and it's a very welcoming atmosphere.

Barbara J.

Yelp
I ordered the shrimp tostada and it was disgusting. No shrimp, very little vegetables and a mushy, tasteless mess. Normally I love everything there; not the tostada!

Zach H.

Yelp
Patio view is great. Food was not. It felt very cheaply thrown together. When we arrived we were told they were out of tortilla chips, kinda weird that would happen. But that pretty much eliminate chips and salsa or guac, ceviche etc. the coconut shrimp was good. Ordered a wedge salad, very bad. Loosely thrown together and covered in chipotle sauce. Tortilla soup also loosely thrown together, boring and bland. Did the calamari tacos and chicken verde enchiladas. Nothing to rave about, service was fast. Food was just not there
google avatar

Havilah Vashti U.

Yelp
At Coyote grill you'll be welcomed by the vibrant ambiance and an amazing seaside view while eating your favorite Baja flavors. The service was fast and our server was so nice. All of the staff had smiles and were so welcoming. The food was so delicious and I can positively say I had the best chips, salsa and guac here! Below is what we ordered: PINA COLADA CHIPS, SALSA, & GUACAMOLE BEEF ENCHILADAS 2 Corn tortillas filled w/ shredded beef, shredded cheese and green onion. Comes with 2 sides. TAMALE PLATE Two deliciously handmade beef tamales topped with enchilada sauce and melted cheese then garnished with some green onions. Served with rice and beans. COCONUT SHRIMP Seven large shrimp deep fried in our house made coconut beer batter, lightly fried and topped with fresh coconut flakes then served with a fresh pineapple salsa and a side of cocktail sauce.

Yelp
This review is specifically for my breakfast this morning but I have a good friend who lives nearby and eats here somewhat regularly. He and his wife absolutely love Coyote Grill as do I. I only realized this morning that they also serve breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner. I selected the breakfast burrito with bacon. I asked if they could top it with Salsa Verde instead of the Ranchero. They were happy to oblige me. It came out piping hot and delicious. The burrito was quite large and came with sides of sour cream and outstanding guacamole. My server Katy was wonderful. She checked back several times to see if there was anything else that I needed. I will be back in the next few days to try some other breakfast options and also likely for dinner too.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I went to this place on the weekend, so probably a bit more busy than a weekday, a little noisier probably than a weekday, but that didn't matter, the food there was so damned delicious. I got the beef tacos with avocado added, and the appetizer of guacamole and chips. I highly recommend this place between the friendly wait staff, the cleanliness and the portions of food!
google avatar

Eva Y.

Yelp
Breakfast was so good, we came back the next day to try more Mexican breakfast dishes! Food was amazing and our waitress was welcoming and attentive. She knew it was our first time there and she told use we could have 1/2 potatoes and 1/2 rice & beans to offer more variety! We had the best of both sides. I can't wait to go back to California so I can return to Coyote Grill!
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Great drinks, food and amazing view. The guac was amazing as was the coyote margaritas. The signature seafood taco was top tier.

R. M.

Yelp
The best calamari tacos and fish I ever had. My friend and I were looking for authentic Mexican food and this place was recommended by local. It's located just acfew miles away from downtown Laguna beach reason prices are very affordable. The salsa and chips were fresh. I felt like I was having lunch at my grandma home. Highly recommended. There is a happy hour from 3-6 pm I think? don't miss it out .
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Great location to view the Pacific with drinks. Food is excellent and service top notch. Valet parking is reasonable at $4.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful location for a wedding!! Cheers to the happy couple! Great place for food, drinks, romantic views great music and coconut shrimp
google avatar

Lynnann W.

Yelp
Valet parking available for $4. Small restaurant with an obstructed pretty view. Service was good/attentive. The food was palatable but I didn't prefer it. Sent back their unique tortilla soup and the chicken burrito was just fair. Fish tacos also were just okay. Decent spicy bite in salsa.
google avatar

Melissa E.

Yelp
Sooo yummy! I got the carne asada wet burrito with rice and beans on the side and it was BOMB! I will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Lori T.

Yelp
we brought out of towners and enjoyed chicken wings, calamari tacos and enchiladas. service was great, food was good and parking situation sucks we had a great view from our table and the ambiance was quite nice!
google avatar

Judy a.

Yelp
Cute little spot on the beach. Not authentic Mexican food if you're looking for that you won't find it here. No homemade tortillas. No real beans. You're pretty much there for the location and the company.. Not sure if I'll go back , only six shrimps on shrimp fajita plate, not really acceptable.

Lisa L.

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this place for the past several years -- and it exceeded all expectations. Beautiful view, great, fresh food and flowing drinks. And Kirra was the most lovely waitress! This will be one of our regular places! We look forward to coming back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Valet Guys at valet were great. Bar service Service at the bar was great while waiting for our friends to join us. Not only was the service great the drinks taste wonderful. Table service The food was great. It was our first time there but will definitely go back. Problem Our server had a major attitude because four of us at the table were talking and In no rush to order. Later after ordering, we asked to order something to go. We were advised it would take a while because of the number of orders in front of us. After we placed the order we told the server 3 minutes later to cancel it. Her attitude got worse. We still tipped 20 percent.

Yelp
Really nice bartender Mark,. He was so efficient, friendly and makes amazing drinks. The nachos were yummy and all the people there were friendly. Great time ‼

Yelp
The best service ever. I love Coyote Grill, staff, food, customers and COVE WINGS!!!!!!!

M.T. G.

Yelp
Some of the best and freshest food you'll find anywhere in Laguna. Great atmosphere and talented staff.

Janie D.

Yelp
Casual Mexican restaurant in the heart of Laguna Beach. They have a spacious covered patio, with a partially obscured ocean view. The food is definitely not authentic Mexican, but this isn't a tourist trap either; Coyote Grill is reasonably priced, and well liked by locals. They have a full bar, and an extensive menu with something for everyone. I came here with a group of 8, and sat on the back patio. The staff were friendly and attentive, and had no problem with us hanging out for a while. You must order the Coconut Shrimp. It's the best thing on the menu. Crispy flaked coconut on the outside, juicy, buttery shrimp within. You can get it as a side, or a combo plate with (bland af) beans and rice. We enjoyed the grilled Shrimp Tacos as well. Everything else was underwhelming. The Guacamole tasted like the pre-made grocery store kind, made with underripe avocados and then left out for a while. The cheese in the Street Corn was curdled. The Lilikoi Margarita tasted like straight up sweet and sour mix. The Serrano Margarita was better, with a pleasant lingering heat and less cloying sweetness. If I find myself here again, I will get two orders of Coconut Shrimp and a beer.
google avatar

Yelp
Clean and inviting. Older facility obviously redone w new windows, seating and paint. Beautiful views of the Pacific. Ordered Fajitas for one and still needed a take home box.
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
A delightfully charming restraunt nestled on the sea-side of the PCH, with water view. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their product. Now comes the best part drinks and food is amazing. We loved the place so much we came back the falling day. When you come here it is a taste of the best of California.....Very Chill!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
I go to this spot fairly regularly and the prices are fair. I mean all restaurants have gone up a bit lately so it's in line with everyone else. The food is good and the service is always good. I've seen a couple reviews talking badly about the blond with the tattoos. Our experience is she's always friendly and handles a rush really well. She's definitely engaging when we come in... maybe it's you? That whole if your enemy comes in shut up and do your job sounded dumb and entitled. Anyway, the place has a great patio with an amazing view, great service and great food!! Will definitely keep going!!!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
The carnitas and shrimp fajitas were excellent. Side salad was very good. Very tasty. Outstanding service. Beautiful view. Lobster is in season. Been here before around 10 years ago. Didn't remember it being this good. Will definitely come back sooner.
