Cozinha da Clara (Claire's Kitchen) is the restaurant at Quinta de la Rosa. It opened in the summer of 2017, and was named after the owner's grandmother.
The decor of the restaurant is modern and light. The dining room has warm wood tones. A wall-to-wall glass panel on one side opens up to an expansive balcony with tables overlooking the tranquil Douro River. Tables on the balcony, with gorgeous views of the Douro River and surrounding quintas, were given preference to patrons with reservations.
Chef Pedro Cardoso divided his menu into two sections; a contemporary one with Portuguese influences, and a traditional one paying homage to Douro/Portuguese cuisine.
We were initially offered three different varieties of bread and olive oil. Our meal started with a complimentary amuse bouche, a lovely chilled soup, which was perfect for the warm day. My appetizer was Rabo de Boi (Oxtail), from the contemporary menu, which consisted of two small oxtail ravioli, served with ewe's milk cheese sauce and shiitake mushrooms; it was a light and delicate dish. For main couse, I again chose an option from the contemporary menu, Bacalhau (Cod), which is Chef Pedro's interpretation of "Bras de Bacalhau", with egg cooked at low temperature; it was a more refined approach to the traditional bacalhau a bras, where a solid piece of cod was served beside the thinly chopped fried potatoes and slow cooked egg, instead of the traditional shreds of salted cod mixed with the potatoes and scrambled eggs.
I'd have loved to try one of their desserts, but service was abysmally slow and after two hours to get just the appetizer and main course, we gave up and opted to leave and skip dessert.
Parking was extremely limited; during our visit, patrons were parking their vehicles on the road outside the quinta because the small parking lot was full.
