I took a beginner knitting class with Hilary, who was funny, engaging, and so very helpful. She gave me the encouragement I needed to work through my stumbling blocks. Unfortunately, she is no longer an employee there. I won't be going back. 1) The owner refused to put on the air conditioning in JUNE and JULY, and it was sweltering hot in there. The other women in my class were literally dripping with sweat, and we all complained loudly, but it fell on deaf ears. 2) Once I went in for a drop-in knitting session. The owner had apparently come back from a trade show, and the entire 2 hours that I and 4 other women were trying to knit, she stood at the end of the table, insisting we pass around different yarns and pattern books she brought back. It's one thing to have a lively chatter in a knitting group, but another, to have to stop what you're doing, stop counting stitches, and pass skeins of yarn around a table for 2 hours. I felt like I was at some sort of Amway presentation. And on top of it, the vibe in the shop is tired and in desperate need of updating. Knitting isn't just for old fuddy-duddy ladies. Women in their 20s and 30s are embracing it, becoming indie dyers and designing more modern patterns. The store could use a serious facelift. I can order anything I need and more from the internet. And I hope that Hilary starts teaching someplace else. I won't be back.
