Yelp
I've been a customer of Crave since 2016. I've sung their praises for so long, because their service has always been amazing, their food has always been above all the rest, and their gluten free options are extensive compared to other businesses (including big corporate ones). I've met the owners on multiple occasions when the Beverly location was new and always felt welcomed. They struck me as caring, type A, and passionate
This Salem location is clearly not in their hearts. The service is slower here. I've gotten many missing sauces, pieces of burnt food, inconsistent seasoning, incorrect drinks or with forgotten instructions, and forgotten items. The baked goods are sometimes stale here. I overheard a trainee being told that the cupcakes are delivered every other day and the scones every 3 days I believe it was? They used to be fresh daily, and the difference is noticeable.
Today, we went in for a date. 2 coffees, 1 tot bowl, and 1 cupcake. The coffees (both iced drinks) took 15 minutes, the tot bowl over half an hour. I had to ask for my cupcake after 45 minutes. It was entirely forgotten. Many other customers were also upset about missing or delayed orders. Yes, it was busy, but I didn't see any hustle. The front-end worker seemed jumbled and overwhelmed, as if he was just left to tread water without training or something. I was going to ask him for a handle bag, but he walked off before I could.
The coffee was good. The tot bowl was pretty good although one of our sauces was missing, and it was brought out as a "for here" when ordered "to go". I usually pick the tot bowl lately as the gf bread hasn't been quite the same in this location, very bland. The cupcake was either very over baked or a few days old. Their recipes are normally very soft, similar to gluten-filled cupcakes in texture. This one felt like the last muffin in the box from the grocery store bakery. Toppings were good.
All in all, I hope the owners are able to put love into this location. Their original Beverly location was so amazing. I don't get to Bev often now, so I haven't visited them much since the Salem location opened. I hope they're keeping Crave's name strong. It's a tough market here, and Crave has been such an asset to us with gluten sensitivities, allergies, or celiac since its opening. I'd be crushed to see it fail, but it absolutely needs more passion again.
