Boston’s Best Fried Chicken | Eater Boston

"This Chinatown restaurant is especially proud of its chicken, hence its former name, Crave — Mad for Chicken. Fried Korean-style, it comes as wings and drums, chicken and waffles, and more." - Erika Adams

Google
Stopped in for a quick breakfast and was super impressed by the quality of the food. Best tater tots I've ever had. The steak, egg and cheese was melty and delicious - almost like a breakfast interpretation of a Philly cheesesteak. The latte was also delicious! Service was efficient and friendly. I will definitely be back to try the desserts!

Google
The food was amazing! We had the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and the sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich both with gluten free bread. The bread was delicious and held together well. The consistency was perfect compliment. The portions were a large size as well!

Google
Best breakfast sandwich ever! I’m gluten free, but my husband is not. We both agreed that the gf herb and cheese bread is insanely delicious and perfectly paired with the north shore sandwich. Also their dirty chai is yummy. They don’t miss here! 💕

Google
Totally worth going to. We had a group of 15 that showed up this morning with food and drink orders, and they rocked it! Everyone loved the different items we got. Specifically there's a pic of a make your own breakfast sandwich with bacon and egg. I forgot to take a pic of my specific sandwich which was the classic w/ bacon, had sriracha mayo...and guys...hours after I'm wishing I had another with me right now. Seriously folks, we had about 7 different items easily, and a bunch of high level foodies loved the place. Highly recommend and the staff was awesome.

Google
Amazing breakfast sandwiches! Great service, definitely get the bacon, egg and cheese - always a classic and so deliciously made here!

Google
Great for allergen safety. The gluten free cosmic brownie tastes like licking cake batter off a spoon - I couldn't believe it was gf. Dedicated fryer for gf tots as well. I heard the woman at the counter even yell back to the kitchen that it was for an allergy. She handed me the allergen guide sheet so I could see what showed up where. If you haven't been here and you're nervous about wheat or gluten, relax and get that brownie.

Google
Small but efficient breakfast cafe in Salem. Good coffee selection+ various sandwiches, cakes, croissants and cupcakes to choose from. Excellent service.

Danielle Napoli

Google
Small place but delicious coffee and breakfast sandwich. A little off the main area in salem but easy to get to. It was between our house we were staying and heart of salem.

Yelp
On our four day trip to Salem we came here 2 of our 3 mornings in the town. It's SO. GOOD. The crave sandwich is literally the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had and I will be thinking about it forever. The baristas are super sweet and the space is super bright and inviting. We also loved the tots and Nutella croissant. So much good food and the coffee was amazing.

Yelp
Everything is great - except the prices ! But honestly comparable to boston or anywhere else with a quality roasted bean . I enjoy the Vietnamese cold brew (added sweetened condensed milk) and the caramel latte. The baked goods are just as delicious as they are beautiful and elegantly simple. The limited menu actually makes me feel less anxious lol yeah but it's a good quick break sandwich place that blows dunks out of the water any day! Very friendly and quick service makes it that much better. They do their best to pack in as many seats are they can to accommodate the busy crowds of tourists and pedestrians during peak hours so there can be some great people watching here by the windows. Not a bad place to chill.

Yelp
This review comes from a family of 4. We had 2 build your own breakfast sandwiches. The bread was fresh and both were made to order. The brioche bun was an exercise option. The caramel latte was perfect. Maple bacon was excellent. The fruity pebble bar was too hard. The tater tot bowl was good and sauce was excellent. My husband says they tried too hard on the BLT but it looked good to me. Overall, this is a great takeout place.

Yelp
Absolutely hands down the best breakfast sandwich I've had in a hot minute. I forget the name but I got the one with maple bacon and the maple aioli and it was probably the best thing I've had in awhile. I'm not big on eggs but they cooked them perfectly. The bacon was delicious, thick and cooked to perfection. The sauce complimented the whole sandwich perfectly. 100/10. Service was great and the little place was cute and clean. The coffee was good too.

Yelp
This was my second time visiting Salem, and second time visiting Crave for brunch. The Northshore with the candied bacon is delicious! The coffee was great both times. This time, I chose an iced caramel latte and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend trying this place out if you're in the area!

Yelp
Croissants looked good but had a disappointingly small amount of filling. I've been on the hunt for good croissants and decided to try the almond and churro croissants today. While both looked good, each only had a small amount of filling inside. The vast majority of each croissant was unfilled. The churro croissant's filling tasted like whipped chocolate and was very light and tasty, but there was only about two bitefuls inside. The almond croissant was very flaky, but had even less filling. For the cost of each croissant, there should have been significantly more filling. I wouldn't go out of my way to have these croissants again.

Yelp
Stopped here for some food while in Salem and it was very good. Small inside with a few tables and only a few bar seats so hard to get a seat. Order at the front, they have lots of options for breakfast sandwiches or you can put them over tater tots which is great! They also have lots of different coffee, teas, and ice teas. I got a tater tot bowl with eggs and shaved steak and it was really great and a large portion.
google avatar

Yelp
Very quick and friendly service, with yummy breakfast options. I order an iced coffee and sandwich and enjoyed both, also the hash browns are sooo good! Note: there is very little seating options so this is a better grab and go place.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast sandwich's I've had. Perfect quick bite to start your day trip in Salem.
google avatar

Yelp
My hubby was in the area for work so I tagged along. Finding a coffee shop with amazing food is always a win when we're traveling. Finding one that has its own homemade gluten free bread for sandwiches....I have died and gone to heaven. I got the Crave and its the best breakfast sandwich I've had, well quite possibly, ever.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
It was okay! Good shop to stop in for a quick breakfast at sandwich or coffee. I would Probably order something different as the brewed coffee was a bit too strong for my taste but I know folks like it that way.

Yelp
I always get very happy and excited when seeing tater tots on the menu and I'm even more happy to see new and interesting twists on candied bacon. I completely fell in love with the low key atmosphere of Crave and the locals were all lovely people. I ended up getting the tater tot bowl with 2 kinds of bacon and sausage with the pepper jelly sauce which was phenomenal. Overall, super great place for an amazing meal and drinks with terrific service at a good price. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We flew into Boston and were STARVING. This place was great, the service was super fast and the coffee was out even before the food. The sandwich options are great, I wish I could have tried all of them. The tots were super crispy and perfectly seasoned. I loved this spot, I would recommend.
google avatar

Carlos R.

Yelp
Pretty nice service! Food what's good and felt fresher than other places. Coffee and chai were pretty good and tasty. Music was just right, not too loud. Good place! Would definitely come back!

George B.

Yelp
Great cortados and breakfast sandwiches in Salem. Eggs were cooked fresh not microwaved. I had the eggs and sausage on brioche - huge and delicious! Cortado was also top notch! Highly recommended

Yelp
Stopped for by a quick breakfast. I ordered the Pesto BLT. So delicious. Fast counter service with a nice variety of sandwiches, bowls, baked goods, and excellent coffee! Friendly staff and plenty of room to sit and eat. Great spot!

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Arrived at Salem early and this place caught my eye. Customer service was great and the sandwich I got was soo insanely good. Best breakfast sandwich I've had! Wish I lived closer so that I can have it again :(

Chris H.

Yelp
bacon egg and cheese is crazy good, excellent sandwiches. coffee was solid, nothing to write home about though

Yelp
This was the first place we visited once we landed. The coffee was decent, and the bowl that I ordered was good but a bit greasy. I ordered the steak and eggs on a bed of greens. I wish it was actually steak, the texture was a little bit off-putting, we ordered the tater tots which were good. Overall excessively greasy food. Seating is minimal.

Yelp
I got the north shore and my wife got the crave. Both were amazing! We both said it was probably one of the best breakfast sandwiches we've ever had! If we weren't staying in Boston... we woulda come back again. Friendly staff as well!

Yelp
Popped in for a quick breakfast on vacation. Delicious food, and quick, friendly service! :)

Very good and very fresh. Enjoyable experience and I will definitely visit again. Prices are competitive

Yelp
I've been a customer of Crave since 2016. I've sung their praises for so long, because their service has always been amazing, their food has always been above all the rest, and their gluten free options are extensive compared to other businesses (including big corporate ones). I've met the owners on multiple occasions when the Beverly location was new and always felt welcomed. They struck me as caring, type A, and passionate This Salem location is clearly not in their hearts. The service is slower here. I've gotten many missing sauces, pieces of burnt food, inconsistent seasoning, incorrect drinks or with forgotten instructions, and forgotten items. The baked goods are sometimes stale here. I overheard a trainee being told that the cupcakes are delivered every other day and the scones every 3 days I believe it was? They used to be fresh daily, and the difference is noticeable. Today, we went in for a date. 2 coffees, 1 tot bowl, and 1 cupcake. The coffees (both iced drinks) took 15 minutes, the tot bowl over half an hour. I had to ask for my cupcake after 45 minutes. It was entirely forgotten. Many other customers were also upset about missing or delayed orders. Yes, it was busy, but I didn't see any hustle. The front-end worker seemed jumbled and overwhelmed, as if he was just left to tread water without training or something. I was going to ask him for a handle bag, but he walked off before I could. The coffee was good. The tot bowl was pretty good although one of our sauces was missing, and it was brought out as a "for here" when ordered "to go". I usually pick the tot bowl lately as the gf bread hasn't been quite the same in this location, very bland. The cupcake was either very over baked or a few days old. Their recipes are normally very soft, similar to gluten-filled cupcakes in texture. This one felt like the last muffin in the box from the grocery store bakery. Toppings were good. All in all, I hope the owners are able to put love into this location. Their original Beverly location was so amazing. I don't get to Bev often now, so I haven't visited them much since the Salem location opened. I hope they're keeping Crave's name strong. It's a tough market here, and Crave has been such an asset to us with gluten sensitivities, allergies, or celiac since its opening. I'd be crushed to see it fail, but it absolutely needs more passion again.

Yelp
Yummmm, the sandwiches are simple but tasty. Chai was pretty good. Almond croissant was fabulous, lemon blueberry scone was decent - not much blueberry to it. Would highly recommend you stop here for breakfast! Street parking was easy on a Friday morning.

Yelp
My wife and I placed an order for pickup and got there before it was ready. The order was made in a very timely manner, and we ordered 2 bacon egg and cheese sandwiches and 2 cold brew coffees with an espresso shot each. In our opinion the coffee was weak, couldn't taste the espresso at all, and the sandwich was decent. The downside to the sandwich is that they put it in a bag on its side so by the time you get to the bottom, the bread (we got croissant) was basically mushy wet bread. We didn't modify the sandwich to add anything, the coffees were both size small, and we opted for oat milk in both. Our total was over $32 and for what we got, I'd be happy at sub $20's, but at over $15 per person for a breakfast sandwich and a coffee, I had higher expectations. I will say they cook the egg yo a perfect medium, but that's about the extent of positivity I can provide. Disclaimer: $32 total did not include tip/gratuity, only the cost of 2 sandwiches, 2 small coffees (add oat milk and 1 espresso shot each).

Yelp
Delicious, house made and cute. Started our day in Salem with Crave. So happy we did. My friend and I got the white hot chocolate and the north shore sandwich, hers on a croissant and mine was on a gluten free cheese and herb bread. Both were absolutely delicious. Very small inside, not much dining room so we ate in the car. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy - slightly sweet but not too sweet. The aoli drips a little. And because we got there at 1 for closing there was also a free blueberry scone.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop!! All the pastries, sandwiches and coffees were delicious and unique! The dirty hit choco with a homemade marshmallow was incredible!

Brooke G.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place. My friend and I shared two sandwiches (recommended by the server). We also loved the pumpkin scone.

Jon D.

Yelp
Awesome breakfast on my birthday! The Northshore breakfast sandwich is amazing! It is especially good on brioche with the eggs over easy. Just use a plate because the yoke will drip, but then you can just sop it up with the brioche and it makes it even more delicious. The maple bacon is so good that even though there is plenty in the sandwich, I always get a side order as well. The tater tots are excellent! Try not to let them get cold and they are much better. They have a special tot sauce for them that makes them even better. Don't expect Dunkin' prices, but the quality is fantastic! Worth mentioning that they used to make the most amazing cake pops, but I haven't seen them in quite some time. Overall, a solid cafe!

Yelp
Grabbed breakfast sandwiches and coffees at Crave on a Sunday morning. Seemed like a newer place and wanted to give it a shot. Very nicely decorated with good morning atmosphere. Friendly service and reasonable prices. I got the drip coffee which was totally fine and their herbed biscuit egg and cheese sandwich. It was tasty but I think the biscuit was also gluten free and crumbled as I ate it. Portions were generous, fresh and filling. We'd come back for breakfast again on a future visit to Salem.

Yelp
Wow. The breakfast sandwiches, fresh bakery offerings (definitely fresh!) are all amazing. And the service! Melissa and staff are super nice! Crave is our new go-to! I didn't have the coffee but my friends said it was delicious, far better than another place a day earlier. Five stars!

Yelp
Was in town for a wedding and we tried crave at two locations for breakfast, highly recommend.

Yelp
We were visiting Salem on Halloween Eve and the town was so very busy! We tried to get into multiple cafes but the wait was too long for us. We decided to go find a place on a street that wasn't so busy and stumbled upon Crave. There was a short line so we decided to stay here and get some food and sit at the countertop that looked out onto theTheir menu is limited to breakfast sandwiches, coffee and pastries but that suited us because we were looking for breakfast. My husband decided on the Northshore Sandwich and I built my own (see pictures with descriptions). The croissant and brioche bun were fresh and flaky. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon!...oh my!....delicious! It was thick, cooked well (I hate soft, floppy bacon) and had an amazing taste! I highly recommend ordering it on your sandwich. I loved the poblano crema on my sandwich. My sandwich was a bit spicy with a slight taste of sweetness. My husband's sandwich had more of a maple taste than my spicy one. Both were EXCELLENT and probably the best breakfast sandwich I have had. The quality of the ingredients was evident and it made the difference! I highly recommend visiting this place for breakfast if in Salem.

Amy D.

Yelp
Perfect start to our Salem day for our adult party of 6! The Northshore sandwich- wow. The blueberry lemon scone - perfect hint of salt. The classic sandwiches were HUGE- and good. I am regretting not grabbing an almond croissant for later. Ugh. Enjoy!!!

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea. Absolutely delicious sandwiches. A paradise for sweet and savory eaters. Out from the more touristy area and it caters more to those looking for better food. Absolutely perfect.
google avatar

Mack G.

Yelp
Had an unbelievable breakfast sandwich in here on a whim passing through Salem. One of the only places that knows how to cook an over medium egg and not have it be over easy. Epic flavor. Giant breakfast sandwich. Decent coffee. This is the bacon eggs and cheddar with maple aoli.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! The brioche bun was to die for. Blueberry lemonade was super tasty. Can't wait to come back for our next visit to Salem.
google avatar

Cate D.

Yelp
This is a great breakfast spot in Salem. Go here! It's counter service with a few pastries, full coffee bar, and breakfast sandwiches. Got the classic sandwich and it was excellent. Soft and fresh brioche, crispy bacon, melty cheese, and the perfect scrambled eggs. The tots and sauce were tasty as well.
google avatar

Carly M.

Yelp
My first stop in Salem and I can not stress this enough... just amazing. There is no words to match the amazing breakfast and coffee I just put inside me. Might just be the breakfast sandwich of a lifetime.
google avatar

AJ H.

Yelp
It's great that Crave has gluten free options for most everything but their menu is very small and service is terrible. I waited over a half hour for a simple breakfast sandwich and the place was packed with customers all waiting a very long time. No one apologized or seemed to care. Also every day they run out of baked goods before 10 am and they're open till 2pm... a simple solution would be to bake/order more. (The scones run out especially fast). Also if you're not one for a sweet breakfast sandwich this place is not for you. I ordered the one sandwich that didn't have sweet aioli or jam and they put a very sweet honey mustard on it even though it wasn't listed on the menu. I appreciate the gluten-free but beside popping in for a scone, wouldn't recommend or dine again. Thirty minutes plus is not worth it for a quick breakfast especially if you have somewhere to go.

Dax B.

Yelp
Run out and get the Northshore breakfast sandwich now. It is really good and they cooked the egg perfectly. This was my first time here and I ordered online. The process was seamless and the order was ready in minutes. And they text you to let you know (if you want). I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had in my life. Awesome coffee too. I wish you had a location where I live in Florida!
google avatar

Brittney B.

Yelp
The food was very good and fresh! The latte wasn't the best - super foamy but tasted fresh .
google avatar

Faith S.

Yelp
My mom and I went here and got the prosciutto breakfast sandwich and the steak one. Absolutely delicious! The staff was incredibly helpful as well! Worth a stop.
google avatar

Paula E.

Yelp
This place was amazing !!!! The pepper jam was incredible !!! I recommend this place for sure

Siri Z.

Yelp
went in with high expectations... and those became depleted. i got a basic bacon egg n cheese-- the brioche was good, but everything else was incredibly mid. all the sauce ended up on one side of the sandwich, which meant some bites were dry. dunkin would've sufficed.

Chris M.

Yelp
Food and coffee were amazing! I happened to stumble into Crave and I'm extremely happy I did, their breakfast sandwiches are unique and delicious.

Mark L.

Yelp
When your hours are certain times for this kind of business you should be able to come in and order whatever off the menu. I went in at 1:45 and was told the kitchen is closed for breakfast sandwiches. Your whole business is coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Closing early is just not acceptable
