Riverside County Officials Won’t Enforce State Restaurant Closure Order | Eater LA

"Also mentioned was Crazy Otto’s, described as another breakfast spot in Valencia, which was listed alongside other operators defying the state’s dining-room closure order." - Farley Elliott

I wanted to like this place, I really did. After hearing about the chain for several years, I was finally near one and decided to stop by. We showed up at 10am on a Monday, there were only a few customers. I would rate the atmosphere is typical. Not great, not offensive. The minimum effort required to keep customers satisfied. There was only a single staff member waiting tables, as expected for this time/day. The prices seemed quite high but we figured based on the reputation, this was a good sign. We ordered our breakfast and when we got it, the food just looked BLAH. A white plate, with dried out, flavorless food. The portions were decent but if you can't get yourself to eat the food, does it really matter how much they give you? After only eating a few bites, the restaurant got fairly busy and was still handled by a single person. The service instantly became terrible. We had to wait another 15 minutes just to ask for the bill. OUCH! $48!!!! For two people, nothing exotic. One plate was sausage and eggs, the other waffles and eggs. One water, one soda. Between the really bad food and the super high prices, this is the last time we will eat here. One final note: When you are an American diner, serving American food, it is important that your cooks understand the culture and understand what good food tastes like. The cook at this restaurant obviously in not American and is incapable ot knowing what a good breakfast should taste like. I cannot make a great burrito, so I don't try. If you don't love American breakfast, you shouldn't be trying to make them. This applies to all restaurants.

Our favorite breakfast stop along the 5. Been there several times and will continue to return. Good food and very large portions. We usually will share one dish and have plenty to eat. The server has always been attentive and helpful. The business is military and law enforcement friendly too!

Google
I'll start by saying the Canyon Country location is superior. 9am on a Saturday. Our food arrived on plates that had been "cleaned," but not well: burn stains on the plate of pancakes, but the pancakes were themselves not burnt. The omelette came with a free strand of hair cooked right in. The bacon was half burn and half under cooked somehow? And the scrambled eggs tasted as though they were made solely of grease. The hash browns appeared by be reheated leftovers.

Im passing through the city this place to me is like a whole in the wall it's cute and the food has great flavor. I was not disappointed at all and it nice to keep getting coffee!. When passing through, this will be my stop. Thank you!

Love Crazy Ottos in Lancaster. Was in Santa Clarita and surprised to see it out there too. Stopped in on a whim and was not disappointed. Staff and food was good.

I was a little hesitant to try this location of Crazy Otto's as a couple years back we had been to one in Lancaster, and it was terrible. BUT, in my personal goal to eat at all the breakfast places in Santa Clarita, AND the nice email they sent me offering free pancakes for my birthday, I thought, okay, why not? So I packed my wife and son in the car and we drove to this Valencia location. We had a much better experience than in Lancaster. It's in a strip mall so overall the experience is a bit less "crazy" than the standalone structure of the other place...It's much cleaner inside, with bright colors and a spacious atmosphere. The person who seated us didn't seem particularly happy to be there or to be interacting with other humans, so we were awfully glad when another person became our server he was super friendly and a man experienced with the ins and outs of the eggs he served. A whole conversation about eggs and the various types available, even the obscure ones ensued. He knew what he was talking about and seemed happy to talk with us about them. Apparently I was the the first person ever at this location to come in with the birthday offer so that through him off for a bit and he had to double check the email I was sent on my phone. All good. Free pancakes ensued! I had the Pumpkin Pancakes...why not...it was seasonal and I already know what regular pancakes taste like. They came topped with apple pie style cooked apples...it tasted good though I think I would rather have put butter and maple syrup on it so I wish I had known the pumpkin pancakes came with the apples on it by default. My wife had an omelete and hasbrowns...It was quite a generous portion and was cooked perfectly, even the hashbrowns which can be hit or miss sometimes at breakfast places. Our son really enjoyed the breakfast burrito he ordered (no meat)...it was also huge and he was able to talk half of it home for another meal. The coffee was a dud, though. Not the worst I've had but not as strong as I wanted it to be. There's some kind of weird national default for diner coffee where it's a step or 2 above browned water. This was on the upper end of that but still kind of thin. Anyway, we all really enjoyed what we got and especially interacting with our server. And thanks so much, Crazy Otto's for the free pancakes!

Great place for breakfast. Pancakes are huge! I ordered the Denver omelette and it is so good! Big chucks of ham!

Yelp
In the area and need a great place for breakfast? Go here! Big food and good prices. Went here twice first time had the steak and eggs and it was delicious second time had eggs and bacon side of pancakes... pancakes are HUGE! Could split with three people easily so possibly for kids. They do charge a $2 split plate fee so keep that in mind. No fancy coffee just drip but they do have mimosas! Service was great and friendly.

Yelp
This was our first time here and we instantly loved the vibe inside this restaurant. My sister ordered the special which was a ribeye steak and eggs. It was a huge amount of food for $24. I ordered the patty melt on sourdough bread and instead of grilled onions, I substituted green Ortega chili. Instead of getting the homemade potato chips I got their french fries, which was an additional charge. I did not care for the french fries and I ended up leaving them. If this was my restaurant, I would have noticed that my customer didn't like the fries and would have offered a substitution. The sandwich was absolutely perfect. It was mouthwatering and so delicious. We will definitely return to this restaurant and next time I will try the homemade potato chips.

Yelp
My family and I just spent three days in Disneyland and paid for meals easily twice the cost of our lunch here at Otto's. I have to say, this is one of my favorite meals of our trip. Portions are huge and delicious! I had the machaca and eggs, and it was soooo good. Everything was cooked through, seasoned well, and the hashbrowns were crispy and tasty without being greasy. Excellent, hearty diner food! An interesting mix of music, a friendly waitress who likes to sing along, and hearty, comforting diner food made Otto's a fun little find on our way home from a long and exhausting Disneyland trip! I hope to visit again!
google avatar

Ria S.

Yelp
My first visit today. Major points for the 80s music they play. The food is ..diner food. Not gourmet but comes out quickly, hot and pretty good. I had a 1/2 Denver Omelet w side of bacon and hubs had Hashbrowns n eggs. Toast is barely warm, hardly toasted but I like it dark and should have said so. My bad. Overall good gut fill and close to our home. We'll be back.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
The staff here are so rude. They're clearly not happy working here or possibly racist. They don't greet certain customers, don't thank them for coming and not just speaking of myself I watched other non-people of European descent come in and be treated the same way. Food is decent. I have been to other Crazy Otto's and it is not like this everywhere. Particularly a tall slim male and a blonde thin female that treat people this way. Absolutely disgusting.

Yelp
Walked in and saw sheriffs coming out, so we knew the food was good. We decided to stop by because we were hungry on our way back home to the Bay Area. The place is a bit of a dive but nostalgic, which i didn't mind. Cool place. Our server was busy but kind and helpful when asked. Food came out, and my burger was perfect. Fries were a bit crispy but ok. Mimosa .was also great. My family's food was good but not hot they had to send it back, and after the reheat, they were satisfied. It's definitely a staple in the neighborhood, so if we were to drive back to LA, I would fir sure stop in.

Mike B.

Yelp
Terrible service. Took our orders, brought food. Never returned to ask if all was ok or if we needed anything. Acton is SO much better.

Yelp
A delicious delight! My boyfriend and I were heading back into town after a camping trip when we felt like noshing. Initially, we were heading over to Denny's, but I spotted this place to my left as we were heading in. With a name like Crazy Otto's, I couldn't ignore it. Some of the yelp reviews had me worried, but this place did not disappoint. Despite it being packed, the noise level was rather pleasant. People were chatty, eating their large portions with enthusiasm. Each staff member was very attentive, offering kind attention with timely service. The decor here is super cute, too! I ordered the eggs benedict and hash browns and he had this crazy meat platter. As I've mentioned before, the portions are HUGE! Their cuts of ham and sausage resemble pork chops! My eggs benny had a light, flavorful hollandaise sauce. The perfectly poached eggs are delicately placed on a piquant ham atop a crisp English muffin. All in all, very tasty.

H'Oracio E.

Yelp
Excellent as always, we have been a customer for over 20 years, highly recommended, all locations are very well attended

Ed F.

Yelp
We have been stopping for breakfast here for about 5 years. They have huge sharable portions with outstanding service. Always worth the stop.

Craig M.

Yelp
Hey There. Can't miss this place. Great friendly service. Large Portions and Fantastic Food. Can't forget about the affordable pricing.

L H.

Yelp
Had Eggs Benedict. Food cold. Used lunch meat ham slices. Hollandaise sauce was too thin, no taste. Not going back. Terrible.

Albert M.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Service was great. I definitely recommend the biscuits and gravy. Very clean and our server Grace was amazing! We will be back every time we are in this area.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
Massive portions with great service. An order of pancakes can literally feed four . Definitely great value . Bacon was very popular at the table. I ordered the Denver omelette and the cubed ham cuts were so massive I could not taste the eggs.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
I love the food here - especially when it's served hot. That was not the case today. Everything we ordered was barely warm and needed to be sent back to be heated or re-made. Not good at all!
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
The food was ok. I ordered the gigantic/ginormous chicken fried steak, and I received a normal little steak. The breading was falling off. It needed salt. My dad ordered the ham steak l, and they brought him half, and it was dry. Service was great, but we did have to flag her down a couple of times. The ambiance was normal. Felt really safe cuz it was full of sheriff officers.

Yelp
My family and I stopped by this local breakfast diner on our way to Palm Springs. It wasn't fantastic and it wasn't bad. The service was very slow and had an edge to their tones. To our surprise the food wasn't bad. Their omelets were unique and enjoyable and the kids pancake was fluffy and buttery. Although it took an extra 15 minutes to get an English muffin that we originally ordered, the food was fine. Aside from that, they were out of a few things which was a bit upsetting but it was overall okay. The restaurant wasn't crowded so it seemed quiet which is why we were surprised by the slow service.
google avatar

Limuel G.

Yelp
Sadly, I was disappointed in this location's service and breakfast. I had never tried the Canyon Country location but saw they had really good reviews for that location. So when the opportunity to try this closer more accessible location opened up for me and my family, I was excited to try them out. I should've taken the dead rat in the parking lot as a sign not to come in, but that was out not in, so in we regrettably went. I went the "safe" route and ordered the Country-Fried Steak with eggs and hash browns. Otto's has a reputation for their large portions, and I got a full plate of steak, eggs, and hashbrowns. Unfortunately, the steak was dry and rubbery, not even smothering it in gravy could save it. The gravy was the most disappointing part because it was not warm and creamy. The gravy was cold and looked like it was left out all day, and even worse the texture was very powdery as if the flour had not dissolved properly. Let's not forget the dry buttermilk biscuits, smh. Honestly, how do you mess up Country-fried steak this bad? For a slow weekday, the service should have been better. We were one of seven tables occupied that day, so the wait staff was definitely not slammed. There wasn't a nice warm friendly welcome or anything that went above and beyond service. I really wanted to like Crazy Otto's and have another brunch option here in SCV, If anything, I would be willing to give them another chance, just not at this particular location.

Yelp
My Last post STILL STANDS except this time we had Gina!!!!! Wow she also rocks. Wow, Amanda even walked up and remembered us and said hi, welcome back. Gina, my wife and I we WILL be back for a great meal and see both you ladies. You guy's ROCK!!! Thanks again.

Yelp
Good hometown food. Their pancakes are fantastic. Their sausage are amazing if you would like to enjoy a nice diner experience that will be the place to go and enjoy your food.

Doggies T.

Yelp
Had breakfast at Crazy Ottos in Valencia. A customer came in with a small pet dog and seated the animal next to him on the booth. I was very disappointed that none of the employees recognized that a pet dog inside the restaurant and sitting on the booth as an LA County health code violation.

Muurice S.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast and service was terrific. Our server was great. My wife ordered something with no onions, it arrived with onions and they offered to send it back to have redone. Arrive the second time the same way. Not sure where the communication between the server in the cook failed. It was kind of disappointing.
google avatar

James U.

Yelp
BLAH! First time at this location and what a disappointment! We love the other Crazy Otto's location, but this one was such a let down compared to the rest. 1. Service was SUPER slow 2. Gravy tasted funky and definitely too much flour (How do you mess up the Famous Crazy Otto's Gravy?) 3. The Biscuit was small and hard 4. The omelet egg was still runny 5. After they brought my breakfast, we waited 17.5min's more for my daughters Eggs Benedict to arrive 6. Hollandaise sauce was gritty for some reason 7. When the check came the server keep eye contact with me to apologize for the eggs benedict and the wait instead of apologizing to the person who needed the apology ( My Daughter ). 8. They served me a Ice Tea in a dirty sticky grimmy cup! 9. The potatoes were the best part of our meal! Will NEVER go back to this location! All around just a completely bad experience
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with my wife one weekday morning when we were looking to try a new breakfast spot. We walked in and were immediately greeted from across the room and told to sit anywhere. Cool. The place is decorated with lots of eclectic road signs, license plates etc which gave off a real hometown feeling. Not to mention the ridiculously friendly staff, we really felt comfortable while dining here. The people were real and genuine and they did their best to make you feel at home. We were really impressed. The food however, left a little something to be desired. It wasn't the tastiest and it felt like the frozen version and like something my kids could've made at home. Hash browns, waffles, eggs all kinda the same. Both my wife and I noticed this, and we are not the picky types. I hope this improves because we'd really like to come back. The atmosphere is very friendly and casual, and it seemed like our kind of place.

Yelp
My husband and I went to this restaurant for breakfast. We knew of the one in Canyon Country but this one came up as the closest. Glad we decided to try this location. Restaurant was clean, food and service, very good. They always give you a lot of food. Exceptional service from Melissa. She was pleasant and kept coming back to check on us.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
My BLT was small for the price, on regular toasted white bread, but the accompanying onion rings stole the show! For $1.95 additional, I had a big serving of onion rings with perfect, thin, crispy batter shell over sliced onions. They were top notch! The BLT was very good, but underwhelming for $11.50.
google avatar

Yelp
Crazy Busy at Crazy Otto's but great food, great service! A little nosy today but still talkable!
google avatar

Teresa D.

Yelp
The service was good. The restaurant could use a little TLC. Women's bathroom sink was dirty and the floors. Food was ok however I like the Lancaster Crazy Ottos better!

Yelp
Got an invite to breakfast with some old high school friends of my wife; when she mentioned Crazy Otto's I was sort of surprised. The last time I ate at that place, it was inches away from the Southern Pacific's mainline trackage in Rosamond, at least it felt like it when a heavy train rolled by. I thought the place was history, had been told they closed it up; lo and behold there are now 4 of them. Guess I need to get out more often. Other than location and décor, not too much has changed. They still serve monster portions, the food is very good and comes out nice and hot. I had their home made corned beef hash (my usual from decades back) and my wife got their pork chop breakfast; talk about jumbo chops, these were very large, tasty and super juicy; cooked to perfection. She immediately informed me that we would be coming back again, she got no argument from yours truly. The menu had many tempting dishes and it could be worthwhile trying a few more of them. The food and service was great, the drink glasses or coffee cups were kept full and our entire party of 7 all had a wonderful time even though the place was super busy. A very professional and caring staff, and that does make or break a place more than the food does I think. Definitely worth the drive for us, so you might want to give them a try.
google avatar

Trish L.

Yelp
Generous Portions is the best way to describe breakfast at Crazy Otto's. I came by myself (had a limited amount of time) and sat at the counter. It was Sunday morning around 9:30 AM, and the place was mostly full. Lively atmosphere, bustling wait staff. I ordered coffee and a glass of water while studying the menu. Lots of options. My choice was eggs scrambled with ham chunks and onions, which is served with a generous portion of hash browns and a side of toast. You can also choose biscuits and gravy instead of toast, which I hear is legendary, but not my cup of tea. I was astonished at how much food was on my plate. They obliged me with a box right away, and I ended up taking more than half of the dish home. Partly this was because I got into a conversation with Brian, one of the owners, instead of focusing on my food. Brian was happy to share with me some of his experiences in the restaurant business. So...I enjoyed great conversation along with great food. One small suggestion to Brian -- I think you can improve the quality of the sourdough. (I often find that "sourdough" bread offered in breakfast restaurants is, in reality, more like French bread, rather than true sourdough.) In any case, I'll be back!
google avatar

ruth r.

Yelp
The portions are good & sometimes service can be a hit or miss depending on who your server is. The biscuits and gravy are always a must when you go!

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Great food and often a short wait for breakfast. When we are visiting friends in Valencia, this is a recommended stop for us.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Stopped off and had lunch today. BLT was outstanding, service top notch as always. Only issue was one of cooks or maintenance guys was walking around with a toilet plunger back and forth between bathroom and kitchen area. No bueno. We told manager.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a classic breakfast number one French toast always order it omelette the best love the atmosphere service it's Greek food here
google avatar

Yelp
IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD! Ordered my lunch today and it came with a surprise friend... A WHOLE FLY in my sandwich. Called to request a refund and the lady told me "oh no you're kidding right" and only offered me and new sandwich instead of a refund. Will be telling the locals not to come here ever again!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
I can't say this strongly enough, just because you get a lot of something doesn't make it good. My family didn't finish any of the food from here because it is honestly just poor quality and lacking flavor. The chicken fried steak is gross and chewy. The sausage patty was dry/overcooked and bland. The bacon was somehow flavorless, but it was cooked well and crispy. Their gravy for their biscuits and gravy as well as the chicken fried steak is bacon based, which is kind of weird. Since the bacon doesn't even taste good, basing your gravy off of it was also terrible, though with how bland the sausage was it wouldn't be a much better choice. The best part was the pancakes, but it is pretty easy to make a decent pancake. The food wasn't the worst I've ever had, but it was pretty close. The only saving grace was that it was inexpensive. That being said, I shouldn't have expected a cheap place with large portions to be good.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Everything was over cooked except the over easy eggs. The biscuits were hard. What a waste of good gravy. The chicken fried steak was over cooked and tough. Coffee was good. Big portions.
google avatar

Kyra P.

Yelp
Soooo I tried this place last week for the first time. Fast, good service (when I've come in- this is the second time now). Generous portions for sure (you could probably split a plate with how much food they give you. And it's not too pricey either. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the first time I was here they were out of fruit, today they were out of biscuits and gravy (which I think comes as a side for all breakfast foods) and straws. Me personally am a little germaphobic and won't use metal utensils (hence the picture lol) or put my mouth directly on cups- so because of this I didn't order orange juice or water or get any drink with my meal. That was the only downside. Just being out of supplies and food the two times I've been here now. Only other thing cause I know people are still worried about covid- the two times I've been here the waiters haven't had a mask on- first time no mask at all. This time mask under the chin- not over nose or mouth- so if that's something that worries you- just be aware.

Yelp
The best breakfast place in town!!! The staff here are kind, attentive and always smiling. They offer large portions. Food is HOT when served. I love the country fried steak and eggs. There gravy is just right and the oak cakes are fluffy

Mathew S.

Yelp
Had breakfast here for the first time and it was hearty, fresh and a great deal. I had pork chops and eggs. My wife had the combo with ham, sausage patty and bacon with eggs. Service was great.

Feliz A.

Yelp
Good vibes, nice bar counter and we'll see how the breakfast burrito is and it's has browns. First time at this location. Coffee could be better. I sat at the bar and Rex served me. Hash Browns were extra crispy as requested. So good! This location has a better vibe to it Han the one on Soledad in SCV and in Lancaster.
google avatar

Yelp
Had breakfast here this morning. Husband had eggs Benedict and i had Popeyes omelet. Both were excellent. Our service was also excellent. The young man who was our server was alone but even though he was busy we never felt rushed ignored.

Yelp
I usually visit this place and usually have a good experience. I have a long time customer visiting the one in lancaster ca. Service was good but food was dried out and greasy. Hope this was a rare instance.

Yelp
The best thing At this table was the French toast very buttery and the pancakes are HUGE. Aside from that everything else needed a bit more on the bland side the service was decent but quick Just wished it lived up to the reviews

Yelp
Really good food, great service! Their portions are huge! My kids loved it and it seemed very clean I would definitely go back especially when visiting Magic Mountain!
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
Fast service. Food is good, typical diner food. Huge portions. They do charge 4% for credit cards, FYI

C A.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch. Enjoyed the food, and the service was quick. Wait staff was very friendly. Definitely a repeat location for me.
google avatar

Chuck C.

Yelp
Visited the new location in Valencia. It looks really nice and clean. The staff is friendly. As always, I get the CFS and eggs with biscuits and gravy. I notices the portion of CFS is noticeably smaller than what we usually have. We also noticed the gravy on the CFS was thinner than what was served with the biscuits. We still enjoyed our breakfast. We brought our observations to our servers attention. She apologized. What I didn't notice when she walked away, was she took the check. She returned it with an adjustment to the check. She sent the manager over. We had a great conversation with him. He daid he would meet with the kitchen staff and his vendors. We assured him we'd be back and had not been discouraged with one of our favorite places for breakfast.
