The Best Restaurants in the Laurentian Mountains, Quebec | Eater Montreal

"Crepes are a major theme in the Laurentian dining scene, and Tournesol’s are tops. Grab a front-row seat for a mesmerizing display of crepe-making at this Val-David favourite. Savoury or sweet, you can’t order wrong." - Ashley Joseph

I have been going for years and this establishment never fails. The salad is truly interesting and very delicious, definitely worth sharing. The crepes are made on the flat top stove, surrounded with beautiful bronze decor really make the experience fun as you get to watch the creation in front of you. The true masterpiece though is the French onion soup; I have tried to find its equal and yet fail. The crispy cheese covered bowl, hot soft bread and the mix of rich, full onions in the soup are to die for. I was there this week and it was 35°C outside and the soup was the first thing I ordered. 11/10 food experience and wonderful owners and service will have me coming back for years to come.

Local favorite restaurant for onion soup, salad and crepes. According to the owner, Danielle, the secret is genuine Emmenthal cheese. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Sit outside weather permitting.

Best french onion soup I've ever had! The crepes are also fantastic (and huge). We will be back!

Best crêperie in the Laurentians! We always go here in the summer or after skiing and it is always delicious. Make sure to get the onion soup and to call ahead to reserve because it gets busy.

Took my wife and my brother and his wife and had a tremendous experience. The owner was very accommodating and personable, and really ingratiated herself to all her guests. Most staff spoke English and French, and all the crepes we ordered were prepared to perfection, especially the dessert, banana, chocolate, and ice cream! What also made an impression on us was that the French- Canadian-run restaurant had a menorah proudly displayed on a corner shelf, as well as a sculpture of the Western Wall. When I asked her about these items, she said a Jewish customer gave her the Menorah, but she bought the Western Wall sculpture, and that the Jewish community in the area has been very supportive, and she deeply appreciated the friendship it provided. It's a gutsy move, but she said anyone who didn't approve of the Jewish symbols were welcome to get their crepes elsewhere.

Very good service! Lovely staff. I regret not having the onion soup. Two of my friends had one and it looked delicious. I had the béchamel and ham crèpe and it was good. Not giving 5 stars because it's a little pricey for crèpes, but overall a great experience!

Yelp
Hands down the best French onion soup around. We are a outdoors group that are always doing winter sports in Val-david, bal-Morin and surrounding communities and we have been to a lot of places in this area but this was our first time here If you are looking for home-cooked awesome French onion soup and great crepes - this is the place Most of us come from big cities like Montreal and NYC and find this type of home style hot food in a wood paneled restaurant that feels like a home - was just what we were looking for Keep in mind that this is a small setting and that the excellent service staff of 2 is like the food - you feel you are at a family's home and you may have to wait for your food, But the wait was more than worth it for the French onion soup and crepe, and these folks take pride in their home cooked meals So if this is the kind of small home - down to earth - simple home setting that you enjoy / this is a must stop after a long day of snowshoeing or skiing, and relax and take your time (maybe even take half the huge crepe home) If you are a hurried-person looking for a modern setting with beautiful menus and food descriptions of plates that end up being so small - you have to go home and eat again - well, this is not your setting One note: This is a small setting and they only take cash or interac transfer so make sure you come prepared and enjoy it!

Yelp
Absolutely the most freaking adorable lil country lookin' home-style restaurant ever! Felt like I was eating in Little House on the Prairie. The food was great too! It is totally expensive (though worth it) and thus I felt I had to take off a star for a mélange of service/price/quality of bacon/coffee, though I must say: definitely come here! Waitress was unfortunately a bit odd and standoffish. We weren't ready to order so she just disappeared, um can I have a coffee at least? She didn't really check in on us and was a bit curt in her interactions. Not terrible service though, so cant really complain. Waitress (Daughter?) was just not as sweet as I was expecting from such an adorable family run spot. Dad was absolutely adorable. I believe I saw Mom doin sumthin administrative-looking in the back, but she never came into the dining room, so no comments here, she looked sweet enuf tho. Dad especially deserves props. Such a kyoot, kyoot! ol man. He made the crepes ol' skool style at the griddle in the dining room for everyone to see and was happy to initiate conversation with both our table and the other table there. He seemed so happy and pleased to share their cooking with us and I was so pleased to be on the receiving end! I was ecstatic to see les gallettes sarasin on the menu, my grandmother used to make these for us when we were kids. She would make them as a special dinner for me n my sister when she babysat us and we would have them with corn syrup. When I asked if I could have corn syrup waitress said that's what the bottle on the table was, but either she misunderstood me or flat out lied/didn't care to hear my request properly because the jug on the table was very definitely maple syrup, not corn syrup. Back to the buckwheat crêpes though: o.m.g. fking PHENOMENAL! Way better than grandmaman's and I let Dad know: he seemed very proud to receive the compliment. With good reason, that was no light compliment I gave him. My Grandmaman's crêpes were amazing. But these?? They had this lovely sour fermented taste to them that was just absolutely lovely with the syrup. Ohhhh dammmmnn! Definitely can't recommend enuf to come make the drive out here just for these. The side of bacon I ordered, however: booooooooooo. 4 slices: Yay! But microwave, nasty, thin fake shtuff, blech. I ate them all just to not waste any, but I definitely recommend avoiding the bacon here at all costs. The filtre coffee was ok. Had a bit of a sweet undertone to it despite not adding any sugar (I guess some type of hazelnut blend, or something to that effect). It was just ok, I didn't need or want a refill and that's strange for me. The café au lait my companion ordered was served in a bowl, sooo yayyyy! It almost made me regret not ordering one too until I realized they do my number one pet peave here: they sprinkle cinnamon on it without asking *angry face*. At least now I know though, so next time I hit this spot I'll be sure to order one sans the coffee-ruiner. The bathrooms are quite tiny, one for men one for women. Walls seemed quite thin. Read: Not a spot you would wana drop a load, if u catch my drift. They accept credit card or interac, but only if 20$ or more, which isn't hard to obtain since most plates here will run you close to that and don't include coffee. So bring cash in case, though likely you can use a card. Ultimately I am quite pleased that our first choice had such a huge line up (down the street). The reviews here are great for a reason, even though there aren't many, this place is expensive, but fantastic!

Yelp
I came here for the first time last week and then again Sunday night. The first time, I came with 3 friends after one of them raved about the crepes. We arrived around 17h and the restaurant was pretty empty (two tables has customers). Yet the owner (a woman) said she was expecting many people who had reservations and therefore wouldn't make us crêpes. She didn't want to seat us at all but reluctantly said that we could order soups or salads but no crêpes. I found that a bit odd but we decided that since we were already there that we would order soups and salads. I had the French onion soup which was quite good! A bit pricey but still yummy. My two friends who ordered the salad enjoyed it but I found it a bit odd. They put a ton of shredded cheese on top (mozzarella?). It seems like an odd cheese choice to me. I was a bit annoyed because no other patrons arrived during the time we were there and I think she could have made us crêpes without there being a significant delay. There is a 20$ minimum to use a card so we all paid together, not a huge issue. The service was pretty meh. I came back Sunday after a spa day in the area to try the famous crêpes. This time, along with the woman who makes the crêpes, there was a waitress. I shared an apple crêpe with this sweet sauce somewhat similar to caramel. It was very good! Very sweet but still delicious and we didn't wait long for it to be prepared. Expensive for certain crêpes but ours was reasonable. I don't think I would drive an hour out of the way for these crêpes but it was still a nice treat.

Yelp
This was my first time back here in almost 20 yrs. Growing up in Montreal we used to go up north every weekend with family and this was our spot. I made it a point to go back on this trip, we got there a little early and they let us in before opening time so we wouldn't have to wait. The hospitality was the same... the atmosphere the same... it was like a time machine. We stayed for a while... had great conversation and story telling with Danielle. The salad is a must try, very different than anything you will find elsewhere, and the French onion soup is simply amazing. The crepes are excellent. I honestly think if you move this restaurant to LA, it would be an instant hit, with its authenticity and quality.

Yelp
If you like $17 crepes filled with clearly defrosted vegetables, corn syrup that they tell you is maple, waitresses that don't serve you but do sit eating at the table next to you, and then when you choose not to tip, getting yelled at by the owner angry that she now has to pay the waitress out of her own pocket, then getting told that you should have been speaking to her in French and not English (though you are not from Quebec) and finally being instructed that you are never to come back to the restaurant - then by all means, this is the place for you! Honestly, this place has collapsed in quality and in service and there are such better creperies in Saint Sauveur that this place is not worth even a consideration. Move on.

Yelp
Outstanding crepe restaurant. French onion soup was fantastic. Ambiance was also very nice. There was another group having a birthday party there while we ate. A group o 25 in front of us caused a bit of a delay but we still enjoyed ourselves. Kids loved watching the crepes being prepared fresh to order. Désert crêpe perfect way to finish the meal. We will be back.

Yelp
Myself and my family have been going to this gem for many years. The Salad is amazing, the onion soup is great and the crepes are some of the best I have had in Quebec. Must go!
