Where to Eat Along Lee Highway (Rt. 29) in Arlington - Eater DC

"This mini-chain offers Peruvian chicken and sides. Despite the name, the chicken is more juicy than it is crisp, but there’s plenty of flavor there. The restaurant offers a more extensive selection of sides than nearby competitor El Pollo Rico, and assertively spicy green sauce." - Missy Frederick

Google
I don't know why there are so many recent terrible reviews for this place, and why everyone is saying it's over priced. The food is absolutely amazing, especially the chicken, and I feel like it has pretty average prices?? Especially in this economy? The one thing is that the wait time is a little higher than average, but in my opinion the food is worth it. Definitely get the orange sauce with your meal it is amazing. Also I dont know why a lot of reviews are complaining about the service, the workers are very kind and efficient.

Google
They’re scamming. The lady charged me for 3 extra sauces without my permission and each sauce is $1.50. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to make a fuss over $4.50, plus I figured the extra sauce would be nice. But when I got back to my car they only gave me one sauce. I went back and showed them the receipt and they quickly gave me the 3 extra sauces and apologized, but it didn’t feel like a mistake. Definitely felt like they were scamming. $21 bucks for a chicken sandwich with a slice of chicken that’s paper thin was also disappointing.

Google
Awful service! Ordered directly from their website and only received part of the order. I called to ask them to get in touch with the driver to send the missing items and they refused. Asked them to send the missing items, and they refused. Asked them to refund part of the order and they refused. The managers response was "I didn't screw up the order so it's not my problem if you didn't receive what you ordered." It's a real shame, as their food is pretty good, but this is the worst service I've ever received for delivery.

Google
After so many years I cannot find a better chicken anywhere in this region and I've traveled the world. I travel 45 miles 1 way to get to this place from central virginia. I do this once a month or once every 2 months and it's always worth it. I've tried the other local peruvian and other places/restaurants in the entire DMV region. They say these sauces are the same as the other crisp and juicy chicken locations and I don't know if I can honestly say that's true because I've tried it and I don't agree with that, they were very good, but not like this place....... When I first started with crisp and juicy about 30 years ago, it was in Rockville and I loved the place ever since but when I came across this place because of my work in Virginia, I stuck with this place. Maybe because the owner and the cook are the same people for decades...... You will always have a faithful customer with me. Thank you.

Google
This is very overpriced for what you get. They are very stingy with their portions and lackluster in their execution. I will never go back. One meal at about 13 bucks was one chicken thigh, 4 bite-sized slices of plantain, and a tiny salad. Another time, I ordered an aloha sandwich that was also about 13 bucks, and the American cheese was still solid and not melty at all with a thin layer of their chicken with no skin, and it was quite plain. I wish I could get my money back.

Google
Just came in for the first time and ordered 3 platters of 1/4 chicken with sides of yuca that only 4 sauces. All the yuca you get and the chicken is pink….Not worth the price. Far better places in arlington.

Google
Dry chicken again this place is really hit or miss it’s a shame because it’s good when they do a good job unfortunately they rather sell customers old dry chicken from lunch time than eat the loss and make fresh chicken. I can tell just from looking at once I got home it would be dry. I have already complained once about this issue and feel bad doing it again but they clearly don’t feel bad about giving out dry chicken. I think going at lunch time is the only way of doing this place because if you go at dinner it’s more likely to be dry

Google
I've been coming here since early 90's. Great food. Now that I've moved back to MN I still go there every time I come back to visit and I have my friends ship it to me.

Yelp
A local chain, this one is my first and favorite. Barely changed in the years I've been a customer, it's pretty no frills on seating and all that. My standard order is the Latino Chicken Sandwich with a side of yuca. Don't sleep on the hot sauce! I could drink it by the glassful if it weren't mayonnaise based.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and got the chicken & chorizo salad! It was really yummy! I plan on getting this again in the future! There was also an impressive selection of sides including fried plantains, yucca, fries and more! This is a super casual kind of dive, but the food is good! They have a few tables indoors but the setup is very awkward. I would recommend taking your meal to go or maybe sitting at the outdoor tables when the weather is nice.

Yelp
The chicken is undercooked. I can't even eat it. I ordered double fries and this looks like one order. I love the other locations and am shocked at this quality

Arnaud B.

Yelp
Yeaaah just not what it used to be. Tried it again after a long lay off and if you are still going here it's either convenience or nostalgia. Arlingtonians know this was the spot for a long time but no longer. Come for the sauce but leave everything else there. Will miss Maria and the gold tooth ladies. Drive a little further to the other chicken spots.

Yelp
This place was solid ten years ago. Sadly, they do not quite hit the same. The chicken was lousy in size. Chicken was not as crisp and juicy as it used to be... the name of the restaurant alone is holding them back at this point. The main sell here is their sauces which are better than most other Pollo a la Brasa spots. Honestly, if this was down the street from me and it was the only spot I've ever had in my life then I would rate them higher, but they are competing with El Pollo Rico, Edy's, The Chicken Place, Sardi's, and even Super Pollo! The bar has been raised in the Peruvian chicken game and they def need to bounce back.

G B.

Yelp
The food is awesome and the service was excellent!I love coming here and The menu has a great variation

Yelp
Crisp and Juicy is a good go-to for Peruvian chicken. The flavor is consistently good and they have one of the best marinades around. I had a weird experience with the Arlington location not honoring the Yelp check in offer, but aside from that everything else was fine.

Carlos D.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! I've came to this spot ever since i was a little kid with my parents and now that i work just next door it's so convenient to go to from time to time! Staff are some of the nicest people i've met! They're always easy to talk to and i've never had a bad experience!

Yelp
Not as good as I had remembered. Years ago, this place used to be really good, it has been in the neighborhood for a very long time. I'm not sure what has happened, but the quality is not the same. The prices have increased, and the quality has gone downhill. Unfortunately, I wont be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
Tried for the first time and had an overall bad experience. Ordered a chicken sandwich and fries in store, she asked me which sauces I want and whether I want lettuce/tomato. I told her 2 sauces and only got 1 of them. I told her no tomato and there were indeed tomatoes. It's as if she didn't hear a word I said, even though I was standing 2 feet away and she specifically asked these questions to me. Sandwich was disappointing, 3/10, had no sauce on it and barely any was given on the side. And the chicken was just plain. Tender, but no crispness or skin on the outside, and couldn't taste any marinade. So just soft chicken on soft bread with soft tomatoes. Yuck. Fries were hot and fresh and the 2 tbsp of sauce provided were delicious. Won't be returning though, plenty of better Peruvian chicken options.

Yelp
Disappointed to be adjusting this 5 star review because of our latest experience here. Cashier was extremely rude when we had ordered our usual, the family meal which comes with a whole chicken and 3 *Large* sides. We always get the same ones - primavera rice, plantains and salad. The salad we got this time was in a tiny container with a few pieces of lettuce in it (seriously?). We went back to ask them to fix the mistake and they gave us a hard time, even lying to us, saying that the Large salad is now the Extra Large. What a joke. So apparently the salad in a 3 inch container with 5 pieces of lettuce in it is now the Large and is $5. There was no mention of any "XL" sides on the wall menu behind the cashier either. Hmm interesting. Have been a happy returning customer for months during the pandemic and never had this issue with the sides. Will not be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
I got a family platter here right before they closed on Sunday. I called ahead of time and came in literally four minutes before they closed, and they accommodated me. The green sauce here is sooo good. The yellow, too. Mixing them with the chicken and rice was heavenly. The chicken is juicy but it's not as crispy or flavorful as I'm accustomed to. That said, it's still good. The rice, however, needs some work. It was very wet and almost creamy. It was a bit mushy and def seemed like it'd been cooked with too much water. The mashed potatoes were a bit disappointing as they are instant... def not ideal from a restaurant. The plantains were really good, though. They were actually pretty perfect.

Yelp
Terrible! I used to go to this place all the time and they had such attitude and the food kept getting worse and so many other great places opened up (pollo Rico, the chicken place, etc.). I decided, after 15 years, to give them another shot. 4 sandwiches, 2 fries and 7 extra sauces cost me $80. When we got home there were only 3 sandwiches and missing sauces. if you are going to charge people .75 cents for one small extra sauce you better make sure you include it. called them and got attitude like I was wrong and when the cashier figures it out tells me to come pick up the sandwich. yes, I am very excited to have to go back out in the freezing cold to pick up a subpar sandwich and be greeted with attitude like some how I was the asshole for not just eating the cost. to top it off, the chicken was dry, bread was stale, sauce on only half a sandwich, under rip tomatoes, and so much more. it was horrible and I remember why I stopped going. unfortunately, I don't think I will be back in another 15 years. banned for life. i am ok with 1 Star, the sauce is as good as I remembered.

Yelp
Went here during lunch, I order the 1/4 chicken with fries, bean and rice. The restaurant is right off the main road, easy to access and easy to park, street parking available. The restaurant has chair available to sit if you like to dine in, restaurant also offer pick up. My chicken was tasty and fries were hot. The beans taste old and the rice was not tasty. If I ever in the area definitely will try the chicken. The price for my meal was around $11.00. The sides are in counter so able to see and choose from the counter. Restaurant has more than 5 side which is always a plus. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly. The restaurant does have bathroom available for customers.

Yelp
I love Crisp and Juicy, I've never been disappointed by the food. I love the fried yuca, black beans, coleslaw and the yellow sauce. The food always lasts multiple meals and tastes great even reheated.

Yelp
Not juicy rotisserie chicken- tastes like a piece of processed chicken breast from Subway. I was expecting a delicious and tender hand carved chicken breast from a rotisserie. What I received was a thin, dry piece of grilled chicken breast similar to what you'd find in a fast food restaurant. It was hidden under a huge roll that was grilled, mushy lettuce and mushy tomatoes. Very disappointing. I had to add more condiments just to make it palatable.

Brady M.

Yelp
I used to love this place but since they've raised their prices and shrunk their portions, I'm out... I know there's global-supply issues and inflation and all that, but I can't believe how over-priced and underwhelming this place has become. You pay $18 for a chicken and get four, measly sauces...one container for each chicken quarter. If you want more, it'll cost you .65 for a tiny container. What a rip. I was at Taco Saam (highly recommended) and the server gave us a free bag full of salsas because my wife said she liked it. Now THAT is great customer service! I ordered a large order of fries and it was close to $8 for a small, styrofoam container with about a handful of fries in it. For $8 there should be a burger included. When I asked about the "medium" size, she held up a bag the size of a Dixie cup for $3.55. She then repeatedly contradicted herself regarding sizing and pricing like even she didn't know the prices of the items. Like others have said, it makes me wonder if the pricing was fair. There was no option for "large" sides on the menu. When she punched in $7.55 for French Fries I almost fainted. When questioned about the "nickel and diming" and newfound, overall "lack of value" the lady behind the counter said "I'm just the cashier". Something tells me I'm not the first one to notice...or to say something. I've eaten here for five years and the quality and the value have been reduced drastically. I don't know if the owner has been losing at the track or wants to put in a swimming pool...but you don't fleece your loyal customers to get there. There are too many other better Peruvian chicken spots with far-better value and customer service. Later, Crisp and Juicy. Next time I'm going to Sardi's.

Marcella D.

Yelp
Seriously ..now I see why they are so pressed to charge 65 cents for a sauce ..their food is disgusting. Chicken looks like it's been sitting for hours fries taste dry and old ..rice doesn't even taste like rice. Do better pls ..wasted 13 dollars .

Yelp
This used to be our go to favorite chicken place. But the last few times we got food here it was really mediocre and this evening hit a new low. The chicken in the 1/3 chicken platter was dry. The fried yucca, which we usually love, was not cooked enough and not at all crispy. They didn't give enough sauce for the yucca. The chicken breast sandwich was inedible. The chicken so dry you could hardly swallow it and they forgot to put the sauce on the sandwich so it had no flavor. On top of all that the service is not friendly. I am not sure why we keep going back.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a sandwich here while in Arlington- what a nice shop- not fancy, no frills- but the prices are good and my sandwich was very tasty! It was perfect for a quick lunch while on the go- I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
I love this place, and have been coming to it for the past 10 years. However, I have been very disappointed with the service lately. First Episode: a few months ago I went there and ordered a 1/4 chicken, Caesar salad, and mushed potatoes. The person handed me a chicken salad sandwich, and when I confronted the wrong order, they said they were out of what I wanted. Second Episode: I went there to order dinner, and before I could get to the balcony, the employees started to yell "no chicken, we are out". I totally understand that we all go there for chicken, but I do believe that there are better ways to communicate your customers that you are out of chicken for the day. Third Episode (today): I ordered a side of mushed potatoes (I am pregnant and was craving it). The person hands me a container of SWEET MUSHED POTATOES. I hold it up and say that I had ordered mushed potatoes, and she says "this is mushed potatoes". I do cook myself, and I know the difference between these two, but she wouldn't change it, and I had to walk out with a container of sweet mushed potatoes (pics bellow). Unfortunately, I think I will have to find a new Peruvian place to go to if I want to have the right to choose my own order, instead of taking what the cashier things I should eat.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Check your to go orders before leaving the restaurant. Make sure to open your bags before leaving to confirm you are getting what you paid for. This restaurant has, on several occasions, switched out chicken breasts with thighs when I've ordered only breasts. There are better chicken restaurants in the area that won't switch up your order for profits.
google avatar

Jackelyn A.

Yelp
I came into and ordered a Chicken Breast sandwich with sauce on the side. I asked how many small sauces the chicken came with and I was told one. That didn't seem like enough so I ordered the medium to go. Apparently the medium is a lot bigger than the small and it costs $5. When I realized it was $5 I asked to see the medium size. The lady at the counter was rude and responded with you said you wanted a medium. She neglected to mention the cost. I don't mind paying but would be nice to let the customer know there is a $5 charge and show them the size. I'm also disappointed in the sandwich because the chicken was over cooked, little flavor and the bread didn't seem fresh. Sauce was great!

Ar. A.

Yelp
I will give 0 stars. Nasty food, terrible. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Boiled Taste Chicken, old French fries, old fried yucca. Never again

Kennedy W.

Yelp
I haven't been to Crisp and Juicy In along time because of other Peruvian chicken places in the area. However, I came in today and didn't find the lady at the register too friendly. I ordered a half chicken and was hoping for two yellow sauces and a spicy green. Unfortunately, only two sauces were given. They love enforcing the 65 cent rule for an extra sauce. God forbid. I always leave a couple dollars for a tip. However, with those rules forget it. Just stingy. When I got home I noticed my double order of Yucca was double fried and hard as a rock. No one in my family wanting any. Very disappointed

James S.

Yelp
Groupon is a rip off at Crisp and Juicy. I know times are tough, but when you sell a Groupon for a whole chicken and three large sides, don't tell me that an 8 ounce portion is a "large". And don't cut the chicken up into smaller pieces to present 4 pieces as 4 quarters of a chicken. And I speak Spanish, so don't think that I don't understand when the cashier instructs the dude cutting the chicken to provide chicken for a Groupon order. A whole chicken is a whole chicken whether I am using a Groupon or paying cash. Shame on you.
google avatar

Clark L.

Yelp
I won't eat here any longer unfortunately. The ownership is dishonest and twice they've miscalculated our bill by $10-15. The chicken and sauce has always been my favorite but I will no longer give my business to a shop that tries to cheat its customers. Sorry folks.
google avatar

Ryan D.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! The chicken is so good. The chicken at many spots like this tend to be too dry. But this place sticks by their name. The chicken is very tender and juicy. But the best is the sauce! It is so good and better than the yellow sauce at most places. I recommend getting the chicken sandwich with the sauce on it. So good. The staff is very nice and the manager is friendly as well. I can't wait to come back.

Michael W.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years. Moved out of the Area a few years back but it is my first stop whenever I'm back in town. Great staff, delicious food, and prompt service! Get the chicken sandwich with some extra pink sauce and a side of yucca. Can't wait to get back soon!
google avatar

Charmaine C.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches! We ordered the Latino Sandwich. Great place for roast chicken and a quick lunch.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
The food isn't bad - what you would buy off-the-shelf at the supermarket - but has good flavor. But the sauce was on the outside of the bun. I prefer mine on the inside so I can hold the bun without coating my hands. Preference thing, I guess. oh and the counter lady is mean. I like 6/10 mean, a little edge. But she was easy 7.5.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Downgrading my review for multiple reasons after many years of coming here and loving it! First, the chicken has gone really down hill. The past few times it's been burnt or with soggy skin, as if it's been sitting out for too long after being cooked. Secondly, bad business model. If your sauces are on the menu, you should sell them to customers. The last few times I've been in, I've ordered a large or medium container of the sauce and the woman at the front counter refused to sell them to me, telling me they only had the small containers left. The person in front of me just ordered a medium sized sauce and she sold it to him because he bought chicken. Most BBQ restaurants sell their sauce whether you buy food or not. Yes, I still love their sauce but if I have to buy mediocre chicken to get it, no thank you.

Matthew S.

Yelp
The food is excellent. The service and professionalism is shamefully poor. They randomly close early, consistently get orders wrong, and over charge for side dishes.
google avatar

Olu K.

Yelp
They could definitely earn a higher rating, however the last three times I've stopped in their service has been rude and one of my sides was way less than quality. Today I got soggy plantain, last time it was burned yuca and the time before that it was under cooked chicken. I hope they are able to serve the quality food they used to.
google avatar

Adrian S.

Yelp
I ordered my food online and ot was ready within 10 mins. The Super platter was great and lasted two days as my lunch !
google avatar

Laurentiu M.

Yelp
It's really bad, especially if you don't speak Spanish also the chicken is dry .. and the sauces are bad too

R F.

Yelp
James is 1000% right. Times are tough for everyone but ripping customers off is a new low. As he and many others have mentioned, they ripped you off when using Groupon. Many have complained about getting small sides (instead of large) and not getting whole chicken. Many many also complained about the 'customer-friendly' cashier lady. A very few said she was nice but it's probably bc she knew them. Ratio is probably 10-1 negative. Greet customers when they walk in or when taking their orders. C'mon. It's basic customer service. Heck, it's just common courtesy. We don't expect 5 or even 2 star hospitality (hello, how are you? how was your day?, etc) but just a simple....hi, what would you like to order. I overlooked the customer service but NOT getting ripped off. I don't know if I got the whole chicken but can tell you I got three small sides (see pictures) instead of three large. Was there about a month ago. While waiting for my food, a father came in with his three kids and told the lady he had a groupon. After she completed taking his order, she immediately turned to the guy preparing the food and said something to him in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish but I certainly understand the word Groupon. Really? Cheating customers? I will give the owner Maria the benefit of the doubt that she doesn't know this is happening and will address this. I know she reads these reviews. Definitely won't be going back until they stop ripping customers.
google avatar

Nina L.

Yelp
Very flavorful food! Never had Peruvian chicken before coming to this area, it's so popular here. Chicken is juicy and flavorful, sides are tasty but wish portions were bigger. My children do not eat mashed potatoes except from Crisp & Juicy- they are that good! Primavera Rice is a favorite too, salty and tasty. Take out is quick and a popular choice. Parking in back if you can find a spot in front.
google avatar

Kyle F.

Yelp
My 1st time trying this place. A coworker told me about it.was in the area and decided to stop in. The food was amazing. Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from. The food was warm, favorable and quick. My only complaint, was the ladies attitude at the register was a little rude .... but I'm use to that type treatment (from time to time). The price was reasonable as well. I will be back.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Time for a downgrade. The last time I went to Crisp & Juicy, about 20 minutes after they were scheduled to open, they were still closed. Months (a year?) later I decided to try again. Same result. FFS when you open at 11 am you should be able to open on time. Starbucks opens very early in the morning and they usually open on time. You could just change your hours to reflect when you intend to open.

T J.

Yelp
I live walking distance from this place... I'll never, ever forget how the sloppy dude, cooking, made sure I knew he did not care for me, as a customer, then proceeded to give me what must have been the scrawniest pieces of chicken he could find in the kitchen. I never went back, ever again. Now, I notice, when I drive by, how very few customers are ever in there. Maybe the owner would do better hiring a friendlier, service oriented person on the grill. Customers are justified, worrying about what someone like that might be doing to their food, way back, hiding behind the grill...
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
This used to be my go to place when I was younger. Lots of memories made here. Food was great here. Peruvian style chicken or their chicken breast sandwiches are all delicious. But their specialty is their spicy pink dipping sauce. Now here is their downfall.... Their service really went down. This actually happened, the main lady that takes the orders was actually sitting down and taking my orders while she was on the phone. I told her my order but it took her 5 minutes to get up and actually to put in the register. There weren't a lot of things available since it was late. I understand. I dealt with her in the past but didn't paid too much attention to her attitude. This place is going down and it is sad. Their sister restaurant closed down too. And I have a feeling this place will be gone soon.
google avatar

Hunter R.

Yelp
I used to love this place. I was a long time customer who averaged eating there once a week for 5+ years. I would typically go in and order 3 chicken sandwiches and a whole chicken for the family. As time went on, the service got worse and worse. Almost as if customers were an inconvenience to them. For this reason I began going less and less. Their food is good but it isn't good enough to be jerk. If I wanted Jerk Chicken I would go to Nando's (bad dad joke, sorry). All kidding aside, their food is not worth the hassle to me anymore. Their customer service is rudimentary and lacks respect. Lastly, they close at 9pm and they have elected to stop making sandwiches at 7:30pm. Their sandwiches with the yellow sauce are easily their best feature. What is so hard about making a chicken sandwich? I thought this was supposed to be a chicken place...
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
This is one of my go-to neighborhood carry out places. Yum. The chicken is moist and tasty. Great if you're getting a meal to share, or if by myself I'll get the Latino chicken breast sandwich which is also a winner. Am a fan of the yuca fries especially when dipped in the spicy sauce and because they are so crunchy they travel back home well without getting soggy. Tried the chaufa rice for the first time yesterday, and we all liked it, it's basically fried rice with chicken, what's not to like. Only item so far on menu that haven't enjoyed would be the mashed potatoes as they were pretty thin and runny. Overall this place is an Arlington gem and nicely located in the Lee Heights shopping center. Definitely recommend for next time you want some tasty carry out.

Adrienne W.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is wonderful. I usually get 1/4 white chicken and always order the fried plantains. The other sides are great too, like the black beans and rice. The pink sauce is delicious with just enough spice. You can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Wtf is wrong with the people leaving low reviews?? This place is what I imagine chicken tastes like in heaven. I could bathe in the spicy sauce every day and never get enough of it. Maybe its the nostalgia of my youth growing up nearby, or maybe this place really is hole in the wall greatness. I'm inclined to the latter. Miss out on the chicken and spicy/mayo saucy goodness at your own peril. Fully endorse the snacks here with all my heart
google avatar

Peter F.

Yelp
Can't compare to Edy's chicken but not bad for a Peruvian chicken joint. Would love if they gave more yucca sauce.

Sarah Jane R.

Yelp
This is a long time favorite place of mine. The sandwiches always hit the spot perfectly but the chicken by itself is to die for. The yellow sauce is incredibly delicious.

Juan J.

Yelp
I've been coming to C&J for almost 15 years. Maria is wonderful, helpful and kind. I'm always greeted with a big smile and my order is great. The chicken is delicious as are the sides. The sauce is beyond compare. I have since moved to Chevy chase and I drive once a week to get dinner from this particular location. I love the staff and the food. 20 stars!
