"With its historic building, vintage roaster, and DIY aesthetic, Cross Street brings a lot of character and charm to downtown Ypsilanti. The Cafe Diablo is a delicious mocha with espresso, chocolate, and a healthy hint of cayenne pepper heat." - John Reyes

Google
I'm going to give this formidable coffee shop five stars but in my heart I would like to give a negative five because I'm beside myself in my heartbeat. Is the coffee good? You're going to want another cup. Is the decor inviting? Serene to say the least allowing pleasant conversation with your company. No harsh lighting thank God. Is the food good? Did Eve tempt Adam? Yes. And this is where I have a problem. The pastries in the window are to die for. To die for. I am the Adam that is tempted by chocolate cupcakes that look like it would have taken 3 days to craft each one of them because the workmanship is superior to the cupcakes one would find in Austria. And Austria is known for their cupcakes. And their Alps, I suppose. I asked Sue who prepared our orders and was charmingly hospitable, professional, and hysterical if the restaurant has security cameras. She gave an affirmative response and this is why I am in such a mood!! If I could have just taken everything in that display case. But I couldn't. Not with those cameras. Lol. This is truly one of the best secrets in Ypsilanti including all the rest of Michigan. By the way these fabulous regards are being made with affection from a guy in of all places, Ohio!

Google
A very cozy and nice place to have coffee and a chat with a friend. Am not a bagel person but i really like their bagels. The drinks were perfectly made. I would definitely go again although it’s a 35 min drive for me but i like the place.

Takato Yamada

Google
New owner, not cross street coffee anymore. Still offering great coffee with affordable price!

Elyse Conklin

Google
This shop has massively improved the atmosphere and coffee quality recently. A lot of fancy coffee is way too rich and dense for me, their iced latte was deliciously drinkable and satisfying, best I have had in a long time

Melanie Eccles

Google
It's bigger on the inside! Great seating options and great vibes; I could definitely sit and work here for a while. My iced Americano was delicious and the two baristas were so welcoming and helpful. Will be back.

Google
This place is very cute but the coffee needs to be better. I have been here few times over the past 2.5 years and unfortunately the coffee has been so bad these past few months. Please work on the barista training (they are so nice but they can't make good drinks) this place has so much potential. I will still give it another try though.

After an original mix up i ended up getting a pumpkin spice latte like a basic white girl... Free wifi that so far has been high speed and a great environment.

Google
The coffee shop I would move to Ypsi for, if I could. Bella is the best barista (oat milk latte and oat milk matcha latte, always with cinnamon) and a mighty fine human. They made my breakfast both mornings I was visiting Ypsi. My Sammie’s were (Southwest on Asiago bagel minus the salsa, add spinach and avocado ) just what I needed to soak up all the good stuff during my solo mama-get-a-way. Treat yourself and head to Cross Street Coffee in Ypsi.

Yelp
I think the name changed cause there signs say Northern Grind coffee and connections. But I ordered an Aloha Pineapple Smoothie and it was so good it tasted like a Pina Colada with pineapple added. Took less than 5 minutes and the employees are very nice. The place was nice and small had a little bar area and a lot of tables around the edge.

Faith H.

Yelp
I'm very familiar with the independently run coffee houses in Ypsilanti. When it is the end of the semester and I need to do grading in the evenings, this place is open and super chill. The service has been outstanding under the new ownership, with the staff making great efforts to make new and interesting drinks for the holidays. If you want a relaxing evening place at this time of year, this is the place!

TJ D.

Yelp
What a great place! Bella walked us through the menu, provided her favorite choices and I went with the everything bagel and lox. Terrific! She then offered a tour and showed us the coffee roaster where they roast the beans for the Brazilian coffee. Highly recommend the Cross Street Coffee!

Ashley G.

Yelp
So good every time I visit! Friendly staff, easy to meet friends here and always happy when I leave!

Erin N.

Yelp
This local coffee shop has a good variety of drinks and things to eat. I like that they make whatever breakfast sandwich you order right then and there, versus premade. It appears like they have fresh ingredients. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and this is on half of the bagels. Not only was it burnt, but the cream cheese looks silly. Very surprised by the low quality of this, especially considering it was over $3 for a bagel and cream cheese and this is what i received.

Tammy W.

Yelp
Pretty disappointing coffee. I got a drip with some oat milk and it tasted watery with very little flavor. I ended up throwing some of it out because it really wasn't good. Cozy inside to do work or read, but if you're looking for really good coffee, I would go elsewhere.

Ian J.

Yelp
I've been coming here since it was the Ugly Mug in 2005. The recent change to Northern Grind has completely ruined this place. They've gone from high quality artisan coffee to low-quality (corporate) coffee. The coffee is now weak and lacks any flavor or bite. Espresso here now hardly has any more character than a drip. Sadly after almost 20 years I think it's time to switch to Hyperion, because even though I love the selection of lattes here, it's not worth it if they're just going to be made with brown water.

Angela J.

Yelp
Love love this spot for a coffee stop! Just wish it was closer to where I work. But happy to make a stop when I drop off my son to work on Michigan Avenue. Based on a recommendation, I ordered a small blueberry something or another. Delicious! Urban chic vibe from service people who prepared my drink as well as from design, layout, & spirit of the place. I've only been twice but foresee that I will make more stops as my schedule and movement through town permits.

P D.

Yelp
Not very sophisticated barista. Does not seem to be a coffee lovers coffee shop If you're really into coffee look elsewhere

Aya L.

Yelp
I must start off my saying, how could I possibly have been "sleeping" on this coffee shop for a year now?????? I mean, I've tried every single coffee shop you can think of, yet - I passed this one everyday and thought (judging the tiny parking lot & location) "nah they probably don't have milk alternatives or good coffee..." BUT I WAS SO WRONG. On a day of desperation, dying for caffeine, not looking forward to my midterm in 30 mins and no other sources of *good* coffee real by, I stopped in. First off, the place is so beautiful in a rustic, artsy, plants everywhere beautiful. They not only had coconut milk, they have soy & almond. They had an amazing Mexican latte. Which I really was not expecting at all. I was actually mind blown - how did I just ignore this place for a year!? To top it all off, they have vegan cookies. No they're not the small, extremely over priced vegan sorry-excuse for a cookie, cookie. They are $2.50 LARGE extremely delicious, can't even tell it's vegan cookie, cookie!! So, that's good & bad because now I'm going to need to have one every time I enjoy my coffee, let's not think of the calories. Lastly, everyone was really friendly. Kind, helpful & patient will I explored the menu. If you're ever in the area, give a go. I definitely don't give 5 stars to coffee shops pretty easy. This place is a winner.

Eric L.

Yelp
Great service, Great bagel, Great Americano. Nice atmosphere with that good jazz playing. I'll be back!

Mohamad K.

Yelp
Best breakfast bagels ever ! Great lattes ! And to top it all best customer service .. what more can you ask for . Thanks everyone at cross street coffee !

Jameson J.

Yelp
This is a nice quaint coffee house, with an attentive staff. Love the fact that they have Wi-Fi too. They have a small menu with bagles and bagel sandwiches. Also there are many varieties of coffee, with different methods of preparation as well. This time I has the ethiopia coffee, straight up nopour over. I'd just say if you choose the ethiopian coffee be ready to be awake. I also had a plain bagel with spinach, onions, tomatoes, egg and cream cheese. It was great. This place is cool. Check it out if you are in the area.

Harish V.

Yelp
Every place in Ypsi I have been to have a good vibe to them in terms of food, Ambiance or service.Well this place lives up to the expectations. Ordered 2 Medium Lattes which costed us $9 and they are pretty good. Pros: ------- Good Coffee Cool Ambiance Quick Service Wifi Free Parking Cons: ------ Not sure what it is but there was a certain odor. Definitely a good place which I would love to return.

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
My partner and I are always here. The coffee is yum. Their pastries are yum. On top of that, their employees are awesome! The environment is chill. What can I say about such an awesome coffee shop? I mean, the coffee is even better than Starbucks in my opinion.

Martha R.

Yelp
I really, really want to like this place. I love the fact that it's off the beaten path, has friendly staff, and a good vibe. I went once a while back and just didn't find the coffee very flavorful - had an Americano (usually with extra shots, which still didn't help.) Then when I moved to a new location in Ypsi and had run out of coffee, needed to make a pitstop on my way to the gym - Cross Street was on the way. I got equally friendly service, but still the coffee is really not good. I got a drip coffee w/ an extra shot and felt like I was drinking flavorless hot water. Another big bummer of it all is that I bought some beans to go. Ended up having to throw them away because they were so tasteless. While I do enjoy all the other things of this place, I will likely not go a third time... not particularly interested in throwing my money away.

Julia C.

Yelp
I grew up in Ypsilanti and I loved the ugly mug. I was sad to see they switched building owners. This was my first experience there in a while I went to go read and drawing for a bit. I asked for a corditoo in coffee. It was good but way to hot needed more foam along with the cream and sugar I ordered in the drink but wasn't placed for personal use. I also told her I wanted raw sugar and she tried to confuse me on what that was?! Tried calling twice to the owner but couldn't get through...all around it was a nice atmosphere with bad employees. Professional barista are always a nice touch to a cafe shop aren't they?

Patty B.

Yelp
I enjoyed an iced chai latte with honey so much that I went back the next day and got another one.

Kim W.

Yelp
I was starving and my husband and I were going to Got burger and seen it was closed, so I seen this place and googled to see if they had food and we decided to come in. We both ordered bagels and they were so good! The customer service was absolutely amazing! The guy working today was awesome! I haven't t had good customer service like that in forever! We will definitely be back.

Rachel B.

Yelp
This is at least my 3rd or 4th visit to Cross Street as a local and I plan to come back again (maybe weekly!). I had the Hondouras drip coffee, black, and decided to splurge on the gluten free, vegan chocolate chip banana bread. The banana bread was a little pricey in my opinion, but even though it looks small it is actually bigger than it looks and is quite filling. Both the coffee and banana bread tasted amazing. I didn't need to add ANY cream or sugar to my coffee! I also am very sensitive to the acid in coffee and can tell if it's not fresh-this coffee didn't give me a sour stomach so that makes me and my stomach very happy! The music is also not too loud and perfect for getting some productive work or studying done.

Ella M.

Yelp
Really great drinks and food. Love the vibe. Larger than I was expecting on the inside. Great service.

Nadia B.

Yelp
Decor is cool! It's conveniently located walking distance from EMU campus which is a plus for me! They have free WiFi, so it's nice to get away from campus once in a while and study. The breakfast bagel sandwich is yummy! Baristas are not friendly, or informative. I asked questions about their various blends and they didn't know more than the name of each. (Maybe they were new?) Coffee is not good though...I tried 2 different blends & an espresso and was not impressed. Tea is a solid pick here.

Nicole S.

Yelp
Best coffee in Ypsi! A bit pricey but worth it. Cool vibe inside and beautiful outside patio. Love this place!

Wendy C.

Yelp
Nice people. Have Barry's Bagels which are a fav. Give it a try soon. It feels good to buy local.

Amanda S.

Yelp
This place has gone down hill so much. It is so disappointing since it is one of the closer local coffee shops. No matter which latte I order, it tastes like a splash of coffee in with whatever sweetener they use. The last few times I ordered a cafe miel it tasted like a literal cup of honey. I switched up the order and got a different latte today, and it is equally terrible. The black coffee I ordered tastes like bitter dish water. I ordered a bagel sandwich and it was stale and untoasted. I will be headed to Hyperion or to Bridge Community Cafe next time. I keep coming back to see if maybe it was a bad day, but it clearly is bigger than that. I miss Ugly Mug.

Whitney B.

Yelp
I've have been waiting to try this coffee shop for a year now! I got a Milky Way iced latte and it reminded me of my favorite coffee shop in Bowling Green, OH. I'm so glad I've found coffee in my college home town that reminds me of home :) !!! Well done and such a fun vibey place to relax and get some homework done. I only took one star off because the staff didn't seem that welcoming but maybe I caught them at a bad time.

Aseel M.

Yelp
Neat place, but wasn't friendly or welcoming. The latte I had was good. The place is neatly decorated. The vibe however, was strange. No one was rude or anything, but right when I first entered, I got a strange look from the barista, like what are you doing here, and who are you. I stood there for few minutes trying to figure out what to have and where to order, and no one bother to say hello or how can I help you or anything. Not a welcoming coffee shop vibe. Would I go again!? Maybe. I would give it a chance; maybe it was just that day or something.

Matt F.

Yelp
So I know there's been a lot of controversy with the owners in regards to BLM, as such I haven't been here for a while. Today though I came in and to my surprise the place looked a little bare, I'm glad to say though it is now under new management and owners who I actually met and were very great and welcoming. And like I said the place is a little bare with not many tables or anything right now, but I can't wait to see what new things are to come and look forward to coming here more often again!

Roman N.

Yelp
So I live in the neighborhood and I've been spending tons of money at Cross Street Coffee for years now (and I always tip the staff). I usually like to grab a $3 coffee (plus tip) and come back home to study. Usually I come back within an hour and grab a refill for $1.50 (and another tip). Today, I get told (after three years of being a loyal patron) that refills are against their policy unless I sit in the cafe the entire time. I'm like "OK just charge me for another coffee and use the same cup." The barista says "No it's fine. You just know for next time." OK, so I've never heard of this policy in three years and I know this barista has seen me in there. I've spent hundreds at this establishment and she's going to talk to me like I'm a child? NOPE! Not putting up with that B.S. from a business where I've been spending my hard-earned dough. There's tons of independently owned coffee shops in Ypsilanti. My advice...go ANYWHERE but Cross Street Coffee. Take it from me...I'm a local.

Dion T.

Yelp
I've been here several times on my way to class at EMU, fell in love with the Breakfast bagel sandwich (that's the name, "Breakfast"), and the coffee wasn't bad, their Mocha was tasty. Each experience was pretty good, but at times there has been a slightly cold/odd reception at the counter. My latest visit was my final visit; one person in front of me was carrying her dog and asked for a coffee. Of the two people behind the counter, one took several seconds to pet/rub/scratch the dog, then grabbed a cup for the coffee, poured the coffee, gave it to the customer, and pet/rubbed/scratched the dog even more. When the customer left and I stepped up, the same cold/odd reception happened where they looked at me and said nothing, so I said "Hi, good morning!", and they finally said "hi" back. the person who pet the dog STILL HAD NOT WASHED HIS HANDS, so I left, and I'm done. I can make the bagel sandwich at home, and I can get good coffee somewhere else. Washing hands is just a basic thing, no matter if he touched a dog or his junk. Nobody behaves like a chump or a-hole, the atmosphere is pretty chill, and I don't expect a super-bright-cheery "Hi!" or "Welcome!" greeting, just something where I don't have to drag out *any* sort of greeting. Give it a try, you may like it, but my good vibes for this place are gone.

Caitlin T.

Yelp
I love this place. Great food, great coffee/lattes, great atmosphere. Safe space for everyone!

Dennis K.

Yelp
I got the cold brew and enjoyed it! Very quaint location and space. The cafe is separated with one area that has a lot of natural lighting and another that is lit up by light bulbs attached to the tables that creates an intimate atmosphere.

Isabella N.

Yelp
the atmosphere has completely changed and now just everything is terrible. the coffee tastes like dish soap, food is cold no matter how they heat it, the staff doesn't really understand how to make the drinks, just over all a bad place. i used to love it but now i don't want to go anymore because of the quality of people and dining options.

Yissel V.

Yelp
Whoever took my order was super nice!! i got a mexican latte and a cheese danish, everything was great!

Noah B.

Yelp
This place is pretty friggin sweet if you like hipster stuff....I got this bagel that had peanut butter and jelly in it and it changed my life. Great food I assume great coffee. They had chocolate milk I wanted to try but I'm what doctors call poor so I didn't do it(not that it was expensive).....next time Cross Street Coffee....next time....

Alicia S.

Yelp
Dear Ugly Mug, I've missed you dearly since I've moved, won't you come brew me a fresh pot across the state? I mean, it's only a 2 hour drive! I have yet to find a coffee place here that makes my eye twitch quite like yours. Don't get me wrong, there's some damn good coffee here, but something about your beans just puts you above the rest... If I didn't already know that you were sourcing responsibly and roasting in house, I'd assume Monsanto got their shady little hands on them and created some sort of "super-bean". I'll always stop in when I'm near you, my friend.

Sania M.

Yelp
Ugly mug has delicious lattes. I have ventured off to this coffee shop quite a few times during school and rotations. Be sure to try the vegan chocolate chip cookies, they are delicious Happy eatings! -S

Ryan D.

Yelp
Just had a fantastic cappuccino here. The staff was quite pleasant and if I had more time I would have loved to hunker down and surf the internet. I was able to check out the restroom and it was cozy, reminded myself of my own bathroom, and if I had more time I could see myself getting lost in there. The only difference was my bathroom has a SmartBidet. (Hint hint) . Will definitely go back next time I'm in town.

Michael L.

Yelp
There isn't much good to say about The Ugly Mug that you can't read in other reviews: an eclectic atmosphere with decent food and coffee. As well as many seating options, including a covered outdoor area. What would really make this place stand out from the crowd of copycat "cool" venues is if it didn't have such rude and snobbish employees. Much of the staff is very friendly and conscientious with the regulars one moment but then noticeably curt and hasty with other customers that have done nothing but patronized a local business. If you have time to chat with a regular buying a small coffee (while there is a line no less) you have time to answer a poor woman's question about your products. There's almost no parking so it's reasonable to conclude that the majority of this café's customers live nearby. However, the overall treatment of non-regulars would lead one to believe this local establishment is more interested in being cool then being in business.

Liz W.

Yelp
I have been here twice, once for tea and food and the second time for coffee. Both were hit or miss, mostly due to service. I sat in one day and enjoyed my big daddy turkey club with crunchy cucumbers on a tasty croissant. The tea I got with it however was weak. Just really not doing it for me. Service that I had was just over the top with the I'm so bored and you are so unimportant to me, I did not bother to complain about the bad tea. Second time I ran in for a to go coffee. The cafe con caramel was super tasty and evil, the service again was ho hum and backed up so I waited awhile. I think the barista had better things to do with his time than make my coffee. Ok maybe I'm just too old for this place. I had good coffee and a good sandwich but damn, the attitude just kills it.

Sam G.

Yelp
Ugly Mug, you're the prettiest face of cafe I done seen 'round these parts. The only problem? I don't get any work done in here anymore. Why? Because this place has so many regulars that octogenarians should start coming here instead of drinking prune juice. Most of the patrons are city folk trying to regain a taste of home lost. Others are hip young 20-somethings studying or doodling in their fancy black books. Others just come to shoot the shit with the barristas, which, who wouldn't? They're darn nifty people. And still others are older ladies and gents who know a good thing when they see it. Sandwiches are amazing and creative here - get your fresh veggie fill without sacrificing glorious taste. Vegan foodstuffs. Coffee preparation comes in a zillion mad-scientist ways. Espresso is delicious. Soy milk brand is one that foams perfectly. If you want to go a slightly sweeter route, get the cafe miel. Aaaand they roast their own coffee. Damn that's sexy. 9 times out of 10, great music and great service. Parking? You can always park on the street and throw some quarters at the meters if you're just ducking in. Otherwise, it's time to get creative and do some monster rally maneuvers. I've never not found a space in the lot. But then again I never get out here until about 2pm. Inside is cozy and layered up with lots of miscellaneous items. Couch and a couple plush seats. Tables. Table lamps for yer evenin' readin'. Outdoor courtyard which is nice and green but a little street-noisy. Feels fine - looks fine - tastes fine. Time to come in and get your fix.

Emily H.

Yelp
Jail coffee is better. Ordered a milkey way took one sip, choked on it, asked for some creamer to mellow it out a bit, went down the street to a meeting where a friend had gotten a drink there as well, hers tasted comparable, dumped coffee in bushes, went to bigby.

Kristen Z.

Yelp
Fun, funky ambiance. Close to Depot Town and Campus. Good food. Great coffee. Try the seasonal smashing pumpkin. You will love it!

Eva S.

Yelp
Stepped foot in here for the first time because I was tired of my usual Ann Arbor joints. Immediately, I fell in love with this place. I talk about the Ugly Mug like I'm a regular, but I've only been here once (so far). I recommend it to those who are looking for a nice cafe just to chill, read or do some work while sipping coffee in a very random yet entertaining mug. Their coffee was fresh, the ambiance was warm, welcoming and colorful. If you've ever stepped into a place and instantly felt a connection, this was it for me! For nerds sake, it was like a homey burrow where I could think and people watch and enjoy life while sipping on coffee. Their lox bagel is pretty good as well. Anyways, as student in AA looking for a good change of scenery, the Ugly Mug became a very lucky, surprising discovery.

Lola C.

Yelp
Coffee is gross and over priced. The lady and young man in the front were so sweet and nice. The coffee was so expensive- $5 for a large but the cup is so small and looks like a medium. The coffee tasted sour. Never coming back.

Laura H.

Yelp
Excellent brew, fresh muffins, and always friendly and helpful staff. I live around the corner and Cross Street Coffee is one of many reasons why I love my neighborhood so much.

Barnaby F.

Yelp
I haven't been coming here, primarily because when I get anywhere near Ypsi I'm drawn like a magnet to Beezy's Cafe. Right now I'm sitting at Ugly Mug hoping Beezy doesn't pass by and notice me! :-o Well, I have to say that Ugly Mug is the most hip and comfortable cafe I've been to this side of Austin, TX. I'm enjoying the coffee, (I'm a rather unpleasant coffee snob, this is a big deal) as well as the music and the overall ambiance. So come in for a coffee and then get over to Beezy's to eat! :)

Chris N.

Yelp
I took one sip of my cup before spitting it out and throwing it away. They consistently burn their coffee. I live half a block away you can smell them roasting their beans into charcoal on a daily basis. Their coffee tastes like their pretentious hipster baristas ashed their cig into my cup after taking 15 minutes to serve it. I love supporting local businesses over chains, but I just did a side-by-side comparison of Ugly Mug vs Tim Hortons. The Ugly Mug lost and it wasn't even close and I'm not a huge fan of Tim Hortons... The Ugly Mug's coffee can't taste good unless you stuff it with so much sugar and cream you can't actually taste the burnt dirt they claim claim to be coffee beans.

Lisa N.

Yelp
This coffee shop is awesome not only are the people friendly and engaging their customer service is impeccable. Such a long time coming seeing someone smile the minute you walk in the door and laugh with you and engage in my three-year-old nephew. Very impressed with them the coffee was great they even accommodated my nephew by putting a little bit more milk in his hot chocolate so it won't be as hot. The prices are awesome its alternative cool fun and it's busy. You want a smile and a good cup of coffee and a place that you can chill and relax this is the place with an alternative rock twist love it!!

Rob S.

Yelp
Cross Street Coffee is awesome. The staff is super helpful, the wifi is really fast, they have AC in the summer, and their drinks and snacks are very reliably delicious. 10/10 would go again.
