These Are New Orleans’s Very Best Bars

"Outfitted with rafters, hanging steins, and framed old pictures, the pint-sized Crown and Anchor offers a decidedly more ye olde tavern feel than the typical corner bar. Whether drinking alone or grabbing a few rounds with friends, this quaint and homey spot welcomes and is worth the occasional drive or ferry ride for those living across the river." - Eater Staff

A True Gem of a Pub – Classic Vibes, Top-Notch Drinks If you’re looking for a proper English bar with a welcoming atmosphere and an authentic lineup of drinks, this neighborhood spot is an absolute winner. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm, friendly faces and the kind of charm that only comes from a place that truly knows what it’s doing. Their Guinness is poured perfectly – rich, creamy, and smooth, just as it should be. Harp lovers will appreciate the crisp, clean draft that’s hard to come by these days. Whiskey aficionados will find themselves at home too, with a solid selection that includes Powers and Jameson served just right – no frills, just quality. What really sets this place apart is its dedication to doing the classics justice. The English G&T here is refreshing... Whether you’re popping in for a quick pint or settling in for a longer session with friends, the drinks never miss. There’s a timeless pub feel here – cozy, unpretentious, and full of character. It’s the kind of place you return to, not just for the drinks, but for the atmosphere and community. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a proper pint and a taste of English tradition. Cheers!

Great drinks! Great vibes! Bartender is amazing. I’m visiting from Atlanta but I’m from Los Angeles. Definitely a pub to come to! Highly recommend!

Google
The Crown and Anchor English Pub in Algiers Point was a great find! The atmosphere was welcoming, and the bartender was friendly and helpful. She gave me some great sightseeing recommendations while I enjoyed my drink. It’s a cozy spot with a classic pub feel, perfect for a relaxed drink away from the busier parts of the city. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area. #CrownAndAnchorPub #AlgiersPoint #NOLAPubs #EnglishPubVibes #HiddenGem #NewOrleansBars #FriendlyService #ExploreNOLA #LocalSpots #VisitNewOrleans

Google
This was a very fun pub to visit! You enter the pub through a tardiff! There were so many activities to enjoy and so many cool things to look at. I haven't seen a cigarette vending machine in over a decade. Delicious, cold beers.

Nice English pub. Cheap ferry ride from main land. Definitely worth the trip.

Google
Love this lil gym I genuinely enjoy the atmosphere and authentic experience of the local community pub amazing space for personal parties and you have to try the malört it’s definitely a right of passage the bartender is an artist of his craft the wife’s maby ordered 150 lemon drops from not just New Orleans but around the country and I’ll second her opinion of his work being by far the best balance and flavor of such a simple drink a artful masterpiece in a dimly lit English pub on the banks of the Mississippi on the point of Algiers Louisiana work the trip work a chip or dip in out of the rain the owners a berry nice man and a local customer of his own house so if you have a shilling to spare ide recommend taking a seat and most importantly DOG FRIENDLY as long as your dogs friendly love this place can’t wait to go back for more!

Google
„Last Drink before ferry, first drink after ferry…“ I can’t remember how to discover this place, but anytime coming back to New Orleans, this is my first spot. Every this looks, smells and taste just „welcome“. But the bar don’t forget, even coming back from Europe after a year. The barkeeper had the open tap ready that I forgot to pay last time 😂 Thanks a lot guys.

Yelp
We had a great time discovering this out of the way space. We had a Sonic screwdriver, and it was delicious. And, yes, It's bigger on the inside! Our Corgi's name is Riversong, btw. She loved her water and doggie biscuit.

Yelp
My kind of dive bar! This cozy corner spot is loaded with interesting things to look at--beer steins, posters, memorabilia, etc. I've never been to a proper English pub, but I watch Britbox almost exclusively, and those on TV look a lot like this. Dark wood, low ceilings, and the cheeriest bar staff. Now I always have a hard time choosing a drink, especially in places that are not martini bars. When the bartender noticed me struggling, she asked me what I usually like, then suggested her signature drink, a lemonade and... something blue, mixed. (Look at the photo to get an idea.) It was perfect. She was perfect. (I saw her out walking the next day. She remembered me and was just as friendly.) It was pretty late so we didn't order food (I'm not sure they even have any.) there were few people in the bar at this time, but I look forward to returning at a different time. I'd bet it's a fun, lively crowd. Brilliant!

Yelp
Great vibe and affordable drinks. Sometimes they host pop-up food events. I went when there was an oyster event. You order and pay separately from the bar. The bar also carries English chips with strange flavors. All-in-all, I thought it was an affordable place to drink.

Yelp
Fun little English pub just a few steps from the ferry from the French Quarter. Friend vibe and a worthwhile stop. The bartender was great!

Yelp
Great Great vibe in this neighborhood bar. Good beers and drinks. Great service. The Envie IPA on tap is lovely

Yelp
We decided to take the Ferry to Algiers late afternoon to watch New Orleans light up at dusk - didn't really happen. The pub is below the levy so no view of NOLA, but we had a pint anyway and enjoyed the friendly bartender and patrons.

Yelp
It's across the water, yes. You have to take a ferry, yes. But that is what makes this little English pub so worthwhile to visit. The British population is thriving in this neck of the woods. The pub has a good selection of beers, cocktails, and spirits. Even though they do not serve food, you can grab a couple of packets of crisps, a bag of nuts, and random British snacks. You'll be golden. Also there are a few keepsakes, tee shirts, hats, and sundry items for your memories. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating depending on your want. Bench's out front to watch the world go by, or a small beer garden in t he back to place sacks (yes, that's really the name of the game). All have umbrellas to keep off the summer sun, that the pasty-white skin of the great British tourist burns under. This isn't Coventry, after all! All sorts of personalities of the welcoming regulars are readily knocking around. They engage with friend or stranger alike. You'll not leave feeling like a random tourist or visitor, if you take a little time to have a conversation. A little bit of Britain in America's great south.

John F.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Bar staff was friendly and attentive -- Guinness draft was drawn perfectly (even down to the clover leaf in the foam). Locals were engaging and pleasant. Doesn't have the vibe of a tourist bar - more like a local watering hole. Loved the Tardis entrance. Lots of memorabilia on the walls, and a dartboard. No kitchen, but bar snacks available. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Authentic as an English breakfast Look for the blue TARDIS and step through to a familiar British Pub!

Yelp
Been to NOLA a bunch but never took the ferry across the river to check out the little town across from the French quarter. Is it worth it? Well yes. The crown & anchor kept my group of 5 occupied for a few hours with delicious Pimms cups & cocktails at cheap prices. The pub reminded me of many divey places I've been to in London in the past. They have a stack of board games & a courtyard as well. I wanted to come back during our 3 day weekend but we didn't have time. A must check out place especially if you have some time to kill during the day.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has no kitchen, but it has a decent selection of ethanol based beverages. There are some snack foods, which will be reviewed on the next visit. Awesome bartender, she made us feel at home. Not only was she nice and friendly, but so were the customers there. As were their four legged supervisors. Any bar that welcomes dogs is tops in my book. After all, you've got to be well trained to have your dog take you to the bar. Add to that, a comfortable setting, a true pub milieu, board games, a real dart board, and voila, you find yourself in a bit of heaven. Came here after being in the French Quarter, and glad we left there and came here. It is now my go to place when in NOLA. Just have to find a place where my pooch can stay out here on our next visit, so he can enjoy the company of true furry friends (unlike the furries that you might find across the river).

Yelp
10/30/22- Approx. 16:00. Had to give star but it doesn't even deserve that. Yeah we are out of towners but our money is good. Nothing but locals in there. We all got stares. The lady bar tender short hair dark rimmed glasses saw us walk in. Didn't greet us. She walked to the back for something, had to walk past us. She finished up in the back and had to walk back by us I was looking at her and she didn't even look at us, as a matter of fact she was intentionally ignoring us. We sat in there for a cool 5 minutes and nothing. We weren't provided menus or anything. We were genuinely not welcomed. Avoid if you are from out of town. It's got a neat Tardis imitation but that's about it.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
Excellent drinks and pub snacks. A quick walk from the Algiers Ferry. Lots of outdoor seating too.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the neighborhood bar I've been to in a very long time. The locals are friendly take an interest in new folks. I would have never imagined that I would be standing on a street corner, drinking a great craft beer and talking to people like I've known them for years. The bartender let us borrow a board game for the Airbnb- very nice. The picnic tables outside are definitely where the locals gather.

Gary H.

Yelp
This bar needs working AC. So freaking hot inside we almost left immediately. Bartender said the owner has it set to 80-something. Save your money and go to Dry Dock Cafe!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Who can resist a pub with a Tardis? Super cute English pub with good service, relaxed atmosphere and good drinks. Nothing fancy but a very well executed pub vibe.
google avatar

Shirley I.

Yelp
We had a ball here! The ferry across is a delightful ride and the walk is full of architecture eye candy. The drinks were right out of England and delicious. We were sitting at the bar and felt the ambiance of regular neighborhood groups stopping in for drinks and food. The decor is over the top!!! More bridle brass than anywhere outside of the British countryside.

Yelp
Out of all places who knew Algiers Point would have a proper English Pub?! Stopped in late one night as I got to know the neighborhood with a friend. My mind was blow away when I saw the T.A.R.D.I.S once I stepped inside it capture my heart. Doctor Who signs everywhere and he most amazing bar area. Great beer selection tons of ciders and Doctor Who nights. Looking forward to many pints and rowdy nights with friends.
google avatar

Billie Jo M.

Yelp
The outside of the place is super cute. I'm not a Dr. Who fan, but I do know recognize phone booth. That is the entrance to the bar. It's just nice to have something fun to enter through. There was a lot of Dr. Who themed things in there which I guess didn't make much sense to me not knowing much about the show, but I do like theme places so I enjoyed it. There was a good selection of beer as well as draught beer. The beer was cold. The not so plus things, the bar was not very clean. There was a smell that was not pleasing at all. It was a busy bar with only one worker which made service slow. It's not very big for all the traffic that it has. Over all it has his positives and negatives. I'd probably get a drink again but maybe not stay.
google avatar

Kathy M.

Yelp
This place had no AC, it was so hot in there I thought I was going to pass out. Go to the Dry Dock Cafe down the street. Way better bar!
google avatar

Nayza M.

Yelp
This bar is phenomenal! I've been meaning to review and forgot but here we are! And I'm not talking oh it's so fancy whatever, it's literally the most down to earth chill vibe. I loved this place. Literally stumbled across it while exploring Algiers pt, with my parents and my dog. It was a hot August day ( my birthday to my exact) and I went inside to grab a cold beer. Now I'm sweating bullet outside but I've got my fluffy Pomeranian and most places don't allow dogs inside so I'm there drinking my beer when the bartender/owner comes outside like Hey come on in! I'm like whaat ? Yesss he motions, come on in. To my delight, there's another beautiful white dog inside too! Oooo yess cold air conditioning! Well I got a pimms cup inside and out of all my New Orleans vacay; this bar was the best experience. Warm welcoming crowd, awesome drinks and pup friendly :)
google avatar

Kristi M.

Yelp
Friendly, fun bar. Half the patrons were from other countries and we had some interesting chats. If you are coming from New Orleans, the ferry ride over was about 3 minutes long and enjoyable. I had my first Pimm's Cup (with ginger) and my husband had a German wheat beer on tap. We both really enjoyed the drinks and atmosphere.

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Really loved this place until today. My dad really wanted a burger here for his birthday. Thought the pop up was at 5. Said as much. The lady working was super rude about how he was "obviously " wrong. The attitude was unnecessary. He was happy to wait. But now he'll go out of his way to avoid it. Really unfortunate. It was supposed to be a fun evening. Thanks.
google avatar

Cori V.

Yelp
We decided to explore Algiers and came across a Tardis entrance. We could not pass this up. It was a nice cool dark pub and a great break from the summer heat. The bartender was very jovial and attentive. When she discovered I was a dr who can she recommended the sonic screwdriver and the tardis. We decided on a beer instead. The drink were cold, the atmosphere fun, the service well.. We would recommend and will stop by again if in Algiers.
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Stopped into C&A while on the Wank for a bike ride. It was my first time stopping by and seeing what the talk was about. A nice British style pub serving ice cold cider by the glass is my thing. Its a little dark inside so you cant see a lot of the English decor but its a fun bar to hang around in with friends.
google avatar

John L. H.

Yelp
The Crown and Anchor is a great bar. Despite growing up in Algiers, I had never been to this bar. Thanks to the recent west bank bar crawl event (Thanks Marielle S. for the itinerary), I got to find out what I had been missing all these years. Crown and Anchor is deceiving from the outside. I expected a much larger bar, but the small size gave a far more intimate feel. I almost felt as if I was in a friend's (really nice) home bar. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and very inviting. While small, the bar had an excellent selection of imported beers. The beers weren't cheap (around $6 for a Harp), but they are a full 20 oz. as compared to most bar's 16 oz. pours. Service was friendly, prompt and they made me feel welcome. I did really like this bar and will happily go back next time I am in the point.
google avatar

Mel V.

Yelp
We visited the historic neighborhood of Algiers and stopped here for a few drinks. I tried the ginger Pimm cup and fell in love. The ambiance is intimate and laid back, with board games stacked on a shelf against the wall and a pretty cool bartender who took care of us. The patrons inside were friendly and welcoming. Very cool bar. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Theresa E.

Yelp
The owner of this establishment was upset that I gave it a two rating and assumed that it was solely because of the roads. I gave it a two because I didn't have enough knowledge to rate it higher. I showed up before opening because I was hoping that it offered traditional English dishes like fish and chips or shepherds pie. I wanted to enjoy the ambiance of An English pub before hitting the road and traveling the 8 hours it takes to get home. I got none of the above.
google avatar

Robin Z.

Yelp
At the ripe age of 50, this was the first time I've entered a bar alone (well, I did have my dog with me). I had nothing to fear. It truly was like walking into Cheers! Everyone was so kind and welcoming. Dog friendly, mine was one of about a half dozen running in and out from the patio. They even have a jar of milk bones on the bar. I had the typically English Ginger and Tonic made with a Tonic syrup, rather then press bottled. It was delicious!! The friendly crown was generally age 30 to 60, several couples and many friends. Not a pick up joint at all, rather a simple and welcoming neighborhood bar. Check it out!
google avatar

Ken R.

Yelp
Bartender here from Connecticut is super friendly and welcoming. Awesome neighborhood bar with ice cold AC. Great drinks on tap and the locals are super friendly as well. Come on in.
google avatar

Kara L.

Yelp
Don't settle for the first bar off the Ferry! Keep those dogs moving and B line 300ft further to have the best gin and tonic of your life. It's a British "Proper" gin and tonic. It's a murky Mississippi River brown color drink which is quite befitting as you ride the ferry across the rusty delta over to Algiers. The vibe is always cool and seems to be mostly local regulars who chill around the bar mid day. They have board games, picnic tables and a cigarette machine. You'll be privey to random conversations, great people watching, and the slow small town pace of the Algiers peninsula. It's only a five minute ferry ride but worth the adventure.
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
If the Tardis wasn't a grand enough entry, the barkeep Zeus was an impeccable man who taught us of the must-visit places of the city. He is an invaluable resource to any person looking for some insider, local info on the greatest eateries and places to visit while staying in NO. I had a local amber brew that was right on queue for a hot August day. She had a creamscicle which she thoroughly enjoyed. A sweet drink for the lady. Cheers.
google avatar

Joi B.

Yelp
Walk in and you're immediately transported to the British Isles. Now that I've read about the owner being a native on Yelp it all makes sense, because I haven't been in an authentic *Britisth* pub since... I was in England. I was very pleasantly surprised by the vibe of this place. I mean, you look out the window and are like, what the fuck are those palm trees doing there... I mean shouldn't there be a misty moor or foggy cliff to go brood about off in the distance? So stay inside (though that patio is pretty sweet). You'll want to. They are a friendly bunch in there. The wooden tables and benches are inviting (we were a large group and took up the main part of the room in front of the bar). The bar maids are gracious. They have cocktails (props to the Timm's Cup!) and an array of beers, plus Brit bar snacks. We liked it so much that we went twice in one night of bar crawling. They even have those liquor dispenser thingamajiggs that I can't imagine go over all that well here in New Orleans (though I have a sneaking suspicion that they are just for show). It's located a hop, skip and a jump from the ferry, too. Love it!!!
google avatar

L B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar with a friendly neighborhood folk! Inexpensive drinks too which is never a bad thing!

Jordan G.

Yelp
Great place, way fun. Been down here on and off since moving back, and there are always some good folks around. Drinks are cheap and cold, the AC is on point.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
You know I'm a dog lover and I do love a bar where our furry friends are welcome. The layout of this bar is a bit odd but it is very homey. I agree with John that you feel like you're in someone's fancy home bar more than at an actual commercial establishment. It's probably a good thing that this bar is on the other side of the river or I'd treat it like my living room. Excellent call on including it on the Party Bus tour of the Wank.
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Awesome spot, old school English pub. Katie the barkeep makes the best drinks! Pimms Cup is awesome!
google avatar

Tara J.

Yelp
Located about a block from the Algiers Point ferry landing, this pub was a sight for sore eyes. My husband and I had some time to spare and figured we'd take the ferry over and wander around. Our eyes immediately spotted this place, and with my husband being a Dr. Who fan (I am not!) he especially liked the Tardis that was the front door. There are several Dr. Who references sprinkled through the pub once you enter. Since I'm not a fan of that show, I can't even describe what they are or what they referenced, but I was enamored by the huge dog tethered to the bar in the corner, and purposefully sat up at the bar near him to give him some love. He was a big baby, friendly, and just happy to sleep on the floor. This place was such a nice, refreshing change from the French Quarter -- the bartender was friendly, beer flowed, and the music was good (B-side 80s alternative). I felt like I was in a little neighborhood bar, which is exactly what this is. Good times!
google avatar

Catherine C.

Yelp
This is a locals bar that regularly welcomes tourists. It's a perfect location along the levee and within eyesight of the ferry. Yes, there's smoke. But you can sit outside. Dogs allowed and welcomed with open arms, there are milkbones behind the bar, and a water bowl somewhere on the floor. The decor is spot on, and the entrance looks like the Tardis. So really why not come here. Comfy seats. Not a ton of room, but then, it was dead on a Sunday afternoon...so not sure how often they get packed. No food, but they sell British potato chips and such behind the bar.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Took the Algiers Ferry across the river and found this pub. Stopped in for a bite and glad we did. The décor sets up the atmosphere and the food is delicious. They were thankful for our patronage and asked us to come back soon. Easy walk from the Omni. Try the fish and chips they are way above average.
google avatar

Brenda O.

Yelp
Ambience is king here, and it seems that it's a place for locals, not tourists. Most people seemed to know each other and they were all gathering at the end of a long work week on a Friday night. Beer was good and there's a guy grilling small burger sliders outside for $5 a slider. They are filled with blue cheese but I couldn't justify the price, even with the grilled onions. A nice place overall for card games and nursing a cold beer, but not for a good sit down dinner.
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
Love this place, and the ferry ride over from the French Quarter makes it an adventure. Super cozy interior with a great authentic British Pub feel. If you like a proper cocktail, their drinks are pretty outstanding. They use locally sourced small batch soda syrups, so the Pimm's Cup was fantastic - made separately with ginger and cucumber bitters (see pictures). Their signature drink best sellers are the Pimm's Cup and Proper English G&T. Great. Old weather drinks include Hot Buttered Rums and an awesome sounding "King Cake Old Fashioned" with some of the aforementioned bitters/syrups - one pecan. I'll be back to try that one.
google avatar

Roger Q.

Yelp
Worth the $2 cash only trip on the ferry at the foot of Canal St to point Algiers. Classic iris pub. Katie the bartender was awesome. 10 Local and global beers on tap. Plus a dozen+ more in bottles. Full bar. Darts. Outdoor seating. Has A/C. Dogs welcome. Mostly locals after 5. All friendly.
google avatar

Joel M.

Yelp
I LOVE this bar....fortunately for me some north LA friends were coming to NOLA and since I was too busy to get rooms booked I let them handle it and we ended up on the West Bank (I really need to quit letting my friends from north LA book rooms)...but hey life hands you lemons etc... Perfect excuse to take advantage of this great neighborhood bar in Algiers (which I probably would never have gotten to but for this happy accident )...from entering through the Police Box, to the intimate, cozy and laid back vibe all worthy of giving this bar a "4" star rating...BUT what puts a place over the top into "5" star territory, you ask...for this place the fact that it carries Guinness AND Harp on tap puts it in that rarefied air! Any bar where you can get a Half & Half is a place that I LOVE...if you're in NOLA don't sleep on this place...catch that ferry at Canal Street for 2$, jump off in Algiers and soak in the atmosphere of this joint along with several reasonably priced pints! Definitely on my list for future excursions when back in NOLA...
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
I can't enough about C&A as a neighborhood pub, NOLA dive bar, and change of place place for your NOLA experience. I love this place! So blessed to live here and can just trip by for a drink and a smile. If you're visiting NOLA spend a couple of days in the Quarter and then center over to Algiers Point where we put the "Easy" in Big Easy. No food here but there are a couple of joints nearby. SECRET TRAVEL NOTE a pop up Called Crack Burger is here on Friday's and there's pot luck during Saints Games and many special occasions. It's as close to Brith Pub as you can get in NOLA. Open at O-Dark Thirty for World Cup, and Mardi Gras And always fun for me.
google avatar

Kristen N.

Yelp
Awesome little pub, get off the ferry walk past the first bar and you will walk right into this friendly pub. Jessica the bartender was great, wealth of local information that helped us plan the rest of our day.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Best bar on The Westbank. Weather your a doctor Who fan or not this bar is inundated with pure class
google avatar

Bobby B.

Yelp
I have liked this place for a long time but due to the smoke, I was unable to go inside too often. But now, it's great. The people are very friendly and even introverts like myself end up getting into conversations despite ourselves. The only caveat is the prices. The import some amazing beers but at 15 bucks for a round (with tip) it's hard to spend much time in there on our budget. If anyone wants to treat me to 1-7 Fuller's London Porters, then I'd be happy to go. They no longer do pub quizzes every week but when they do have them, they can email you so you don't miss it. All they need now is a kitchen putting out fish and chips and some lovely shephards pie.
google avatar

Clariza S.

Yelp
Doctor Who fans must make the $2 ferry journey to this gem at Algiers Point. It's got a divey feel but once you walk through the Tardis (yes you enter through an actual Tardis) you'll feel like a local. They have an ample selection of Doctor Who drinks that will bring even the most novice of Whovians to their knees (that Sonic Screw Driver!) They are an English themed pub and even offer a wide variety of crisps (Walkers).
