Making Easter Fun for Everyone!

"This well-run 18C pub is just two miles from Castle Howard. The menu champions local meats and the kitchen’s pride and joy is its charcoal-fired rotisserie. Dishes are hearty, sandwiches are doorstops, and puddings are of the nursery variety." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

We had a lovely lunch here after a dog walk. The food was delicious and the staff couldn’t do enough for us including bringing out a comfy bed for our dog. Vicki served us and the service was excellent. Thank you, if we’re back in the area we will return!

Food was very nice and the beer well kept and tasty. The manager / owner kept having to remind staff to serve the customers though. The big downside was that I should have checked my bill more closely. When I got home I found a 10% service charge which was not mentioned on the menu, nor by the staff. I don't mind tipping, for good service, but this was hidden from me. I hope the staff get the 10%? I see that someone else asked but got no reply on that point.

We came for Sunday lunch for Mother's Day and what a disappointment. Used to be fantastic but what a difference! Prawn cocktail starter was horrific - Tasteless, bland and small. Roast beef was a £2 supplement which we all opted for and was advertised as 'served pink'. It was served brown and well done. The plate was swimming in watery gravy and sides were average at best. Service - when we arrived our table was being cleared so they asked us if we could have a drink at the bar first. We were more than happy with this, but after 2 minutes we were told we had to sit down as our table was ready.. we asked if we could finish our drinks and the manager said no. We ordered our wine mid way through our starters, which didn't arrive until our mains were nearly finished. They tried to clear up our table whilst my mum was still eating.. Although the young wait staff didn't seem to know what they were doing, they seemed very polite. Clearly hadn't been given much instruction from the manager, who was unbelievably rude. I asked for the service charge to be removed and when I said things hadn't been great, the manager just put his head down and apologised without seeming to really care at all, he didn't even ask what the issues were. Such a shame as we used to love this place!

Had a lovely meal on Friday at the Crown and Cushion! Good atmosphere, good service, and lovely food. Would recommend the Steak Pies and Sticky Toffee Pudding. Drinks were all great too and there was a nice open fire in the bar area - nothing negative to comment on ☺️

I’m going to leave my previous review below, but update with my most recent experience. Following that review we were contacted by the manager who asked for a chance to make things right. We accepted and the difference between our last experience and this one was night and day. There were four of us for this meal, and we had all been at the last one. The food was excellent and came quickly. I had cauliflower cheese soup which was excellent, followed by fish and chips which was crispy with a not-stingy amount of tartare sauce and mushy peas. I was too full for pudding. The main difference was the service - they were very friendly and attentive but not hanging around. Brought us water for the table when we sat down and offered us drinks throughout the evening. They checked to make sure everything was ok during every course, and checked if we needed anything else. It was a really good meal, we didn’t feel rushed or unwanted, and while it could have felt awkward, they made us feel welcome. We all agreed that it was a much better experience so I was happy to revise my review. *Previous review below* The food was actually very good, when it arrived, but the service was atrocious. We had booked the function room for a family birthday. The table was laid with cutlery and water glasses, but no water was brought to the table. In fact the whole time we were there we weren’t offered any drinks and had to go to the bar. We had a tab, and would have ordered a lot more if anyone had bothered with us. We had sent our food order in advance. We were told we could change any order when we arrived, and a couple of people did, but this apparently wasn’t communicated to the kitchen, as food we ordered didn’t arrive, and food we didn’t order did. Some of the items brought had never been on our order and we sent them back. When it did arrive it was brought in dribs and drabs, and some of the staff didn’t seem to know what they were carrying or what was on the menu. Some starters were wrong, some mains were wrong, some puddings didn’t arrive and the staff member rolled their eyes when asked for them. I had to ask for a spoon for my soup. It all took a long time to arrive. Nobody was checking on us. We were there three hours. We had coffee and I had to go and get my own sugar. When I went to ask for some the staff were stood gossiping and I had to interrupt them. It’s like I wasn’t there. Overall a totally negative experience. This is the second time I’ve been and it was just as bad a couple of months ago. That time they took our drinks order and then just disappeared. 20 minutes later we flagged down a member of staff to find out where our drinks were and order our food. The food did not make up for what was an overall negative experience. So many basic customer service tricks were missed. The staff need a lot of training. I won’t be back if I can help it, and will be recommending people avoid this place. If anyone from the pub is reading this, I can see you’re using ChatGPT for your replies to reviews. If you do plan on replying, please give me the courtesy of writing it yourself.

Came as a 4 on 11th Feb with our dog. Great friendly staff and wonderful food. Gave treats and some pork scratchings to our dog and I really enjoyed the gluten free fish and chips. Thank you very much for a lovely evening

Absolutely not recommending this restaurant. You will get a very different experience from what you expected based on the website pictures… Sourdough bread with butter. - Morrison or Tesco thin sliced bread. Not even sourdough. The two butters are a joke. One is rather earwax the one with smoked paprika is overpowering and the paprika is poor quality. Absolutely disgusting start. - chicken supreme. Nothing supreme about this. Tasteless bland. Uncooked potato and watery sauce. - pork tomahawk. Now. This is a difficult cut. Has bone and skin and tenderloin and a bit of fatty belly. If done correctly- showstopper. It was a disaster. Dry and chewy. The skin not even cooked. The fat part not cooked. Not seasoned. Finished on a bit of charcoal- but clearly not cooked on it. Served with an unnecessary mountain of rocket salad with expired tomatoes and a dressing that is a joke. The staff automatically puts on 10% service charge and tells you - we can take if off if you want to. I hope the staff sees that money and not the manager… A big big disappointment. Won’t recommend this one

Fantastic food, lovely pub with clean facilities & friendly staff. Had a quick lunch and drink before going home from the area, and the burger I had was excellent, kept me going for the rest of the day. Would recommend. Thanks again.

Yelp
I loved the warm fire and top notch decor and cleanliness. We were early to meet local friends and had a drink in the bar while we waited. The staff were fabulous but the food was underwhelming. I had the chicken with a lemon cream sauce and what was supposed to be Dauphinoise potatoes along with kale/chard side veg that was ver undercook. This made it too chewy and inedible. Hubs had steak and ale pie that was okay.

Yelp
The Pub is sat on a gorgeous country road, it was a sunny day so we were able to make the most from the outside beer garden. We were a large party but catered for well with an Easter egg hunt to keep the small children in our group entertained. The mains were tasty, I ordered the chicken roast - there was way too much chicken, half a chicken! but it was well cooked. The veg was good, especially the cauliflower cheese. Only let down was the roast potatoes which weren't very crispy. The sticky toffee pudding for dessert was fab but others had the Brownie which didn't really taste of anything! I would give it a go again if I was in the area but won't be rushing back.
