I've found myself walking right past Crown Chicken many times whenever I've stayed in downtown Philly, near the convention center. I was out by myself walking around on a Friday night around 8pm and suddenly I was craving fried chicken and so on a whim decided to finally give them a try. I'm religious about checking in and seeing what my fellow Yelpers have to say on any given place and the reviews for Crown Chicken are NOT kind. In fact they're dismal. And let's not talk about their health rating. We'll just pretend I never saw it. Since I was already standing across the street, I just said "phuck it, how bad can this restaurant possibly be?"
The restaurant sits on the corner of Filbert, close to the Marriott, the Redding Terminal market, China town and a block away from Market street. It's take-out only and because of Covid the counter is completely divided by wall to wall plexi glass. There was only one couple waiting for their order but nary anyone else inside. The place was awfully quiet for a Friday night. Hmmm, I thought, with so many other great food choices nearby, maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Maybe I was feeling a little randy but really I was just really hungry, so I threw caution to the wind, walked in and bellied up to the counter. Looking up at the menu I saw so many options...all things chicken, wings galore, seafood, ribs, gyros, sandwiches, burgers, cheesesteaks, fries, rice, combos plus a plethora of desserts...I was not ready for so many choices and it got intense (all in my mind of course). Wait...do I see Jamaican patties too? At a chicken joint? (Oh ok.) With so many options, I was a little indecisive but the friendly guy at the counter told me to take my time and chatted me up. He was kind and super patient but luckily since there was no one else in there, I wasn't clogging up any lines.
I came here for fried greasy chicken and that's what I got...4 piece mixed chicken combo with a side of red beans and rice, a strawberry soda plus a Jamaican patty and 6 wings (all for $23 including a very generous tip). To me that's a deal and figured I'd get dinner and left overs for lunch the next day. The chicken was pretty damned good, steaming hot, just the right amount of greasy and perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. The Jamaican patty was also surprisingly tasty and super fresh (too bad I didn't ask if they had coco bread to wrap around it). The rice was awesome too, nicely seasoned, fresh and a nice side portion. And the wings? I loved the wings! Plump and juicy and crispy...just the way a good wing should be.
I'm still confused about the bad reviews but I'm glad I wasn't too "chicken" to take a chance on Crown Chicken. Quick, cheap and tasty eats and it's open till 3 am. And a shout out and thanks to the friendly counter guy (he told me he hails from Afghanistan but unfortunately I didn't catch his name). Great customer service is always appreciated and goes a long way in ensuring a repeat customer which they can now count with me. Now I know where to pick up some quick and tasty fried chicken whenever I get a hankering while in downtown Philly. Don't let the negative reviews sway you from checking out Crown Chicken!
