Clare Smyth’s New Sydney Restaurant Will Shoot for Michelin Stars | Eater London

"Planned as a destination restaurant at the new Crown development in Sydney (opening 2021), Smyth intends to continue the Core approach on the Australian menu, citing the incredible quality and diversity of Australian produce and aiming to spend time exploring food and wine regions to showcase the best produce sourced from Australia’s most dedicated farmers and food producers." - James Hansen

I recently stayed at Crown Sydney and, for the price, it was extremely disappointing. I had emailed ahead to let them know the stay was for an engagement and asked about any optional extras, but nothing was offered to make the experience feel special. Check-in requires completing details beforehand, yet you still have to line up for over 30 minutes on arrival. On top of that, a $500 security deposit is taken at check-in. I booked a higher-priced Deluxe Harbour View room, however the view was underwhelming, you could barely see the Harbour Bridge unless you stood behind the curtain. Room service also adds a $10 surcharge on top of menu prices. The room itself was not very clean, especially the bathroom, which still had soap and shampoo residue from previous guests on the tiles. When attempting to check out digitally, I was prompted to approve an additional payment of $346 and the system showed the room as being charged twice. When I raised this at the desk, I was told this “happens a lot” and that guests often get confused. If that’s the case, the system really needs to be fixed so people aren’t at risk of being overcharged. The pool area felt more like a kids’ club than a luxury space. It is extremely crowded, with pool toys and games everywhere, and not at all relaxing. I’ve stayed at other Crown properties in Australia and they are far superior. For a hotel where many guests are celebrating special occasions, this felt like an average hotel at best. I would recommend spending your money elsewhere, as there are far nicer hotels in Sydney.

We stayed at Crown Sydney for two nights over the weekend and the experience was honestly so disappointing. Our room was never cleaned once during our entire stay. I called front desk twice asking for someone to come up with fresh towels and to service the room — no one ever came. Then on the morning of checkout, I called an hour beforehand to request someone bring up a trolley for our luggage. Again, no one came. I called a second time and was told someone was on their way.. still no one arrived. We ended up taking all our bags down ourselves, which was really difficult travelling with a 7-month-old baby. When I went to the bell desk, they confirmed no one had even been notified. For a hotel that advertises itself as luxury and 6-star, the service was honestly unacceptable. We booked this staycation to relax, not to make things harder for us. Such a shame because the property is beautiful! but the service was not anywhere near the standard you expect for the price.

The crown hotel is a conundrum. The rooms are modern and lovely and the housekeeping is excellent. The driveway, valet and porter service is confused and slow, the reception is similar. I experienced a 20-30 min check-in process and very long waits for parking and bags and this isn't the first time. Location wise is ok but there are more convenient hotels with better proximity to the CBD or darling harbour.

Crown Sydney is one of the most luxurious and impressive landmarks in the city. Located in Barangaroo, the tower stands out with its modern architecture and stunning design. The views from Crown Sydney are absolutely breathtaking, overlooking Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge, and the city skyline. Inside, everything feels elegant and high-end, from the stylish interiors to the premium restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is calm, exclusive, and well maintained, making it a great destination even just to visit and admire the surroundings. Crown Sydney truly adds a touch of luxury to Sydney and is a must-see destination for anyone who appreciates modern design and spectacular views.”

Overall, the location and views are great, but unfortunately the rest of the experience was quite disappointing. Housekeeping was very unprofessional — almost every day there were items missing and even after calling, deliveries were often delayed or incomplete, requiring follow-up calls. The service staff at the casino were also inconsistent and poorly trained. Different staff members gave completely different answers and after waiting a long time we were told it couldn’t be processed (at least not that day), only for it to suddenly become possible later. Very unprofessional and frustrating overall. Compared to my experiences in Melbourne and Perth at Crown this was a big let-down.

We have stayed a few times now and have found the hotel to be a fantastic place to stay. The rooms are well cleaned and maintained. The staff and their attention to detail are fantastic. Especially at the main restaurant where breakfast is located. Someone is always there to make sure you are having a great time and your needs are met. The location is good right by the water near Barangaroo. This location of course means you get great views of the harbour bridge and Opera house 😃

Came to Crown Casino with my girlfriend just to play a little. We were told we needed to apply for a membership card first, which was totally fine. After handing in our IDs, we were asked to sit down and wait to be called. While we were waiting, two other customers arrived after us and were allowed to start their membership application immediately. By the time my name was finally called, they were already halfway through their process. When I finished, they had already entered the casino. From giving my ID to receiving my card took almost 30 minutes. The queue management was extremely poor and inefficient. For a casino of this size and reputation, this is very unprofessional and unacceptable. It completely ruined our mood to play.

If it wasn't for work or family, I would never book again. Every time I book there is some sort of issue. 2 years ago I had a random guy walk in with a key and said it was his room. When I called front desk to fix the issue, they said I had to go downstairs and get a new card. I had never felt so dismissed with the staff being so unapologetic. Not much was done and I thought I'd just keep it to myself and not worry about it.. no harm done. This year, I gave it another go. It was definitely a much better experience HOWEVER, when I had called up to get a tax invoice sent, it took days with no response. First call, the lady said to call back because the card number was apparently wrong. Which I can assure it, it was not, as it worked the next 3 phone calls I made. The 2nd call, I asked for a tax invoice, they tried to send me to the front desk, no one picked up, he said he left a message with them to call me back. No call back. I called again, same scenario except this time she had stated she had sent an email with my details. Still nothing. The 4th and final call, I spoke to Tai who was apologetic and was able to send me an invoice within seconds of retrieving my information. She was the only competent staff I think I've ever dealt with at a Crown hotel. I can assure you, Perth and Melbourne Crown are just as bad. With one not being able to check in until 6pm because our room wasn't cleaned. I had then received a complementary drink to which the bartender said I can only choose from a beer or 2 choices of wine. I've had better service from motels. Train your staff. (Thank you Tai for being wonderful.)
