Cru Providence - Review - West End - Providence - The Infatuation

"Cru is where Bayberry Beer Hall used to be and has a similar vibe. You can just as easily sip a beer and dig into a chicken sandwich, or hold a delicate glass of white wine and use a fork and knife to tear into short rib au poivre. In short, Cru has a little bit of everything (including kids’ meals), all in a warm, casual, exposed-brick environment—very 2015, but in the best, most comforting way. Come for a date if you’re looking to commit to more than just coffee, or for a laid-back sit-down dinner with solid food. Oh, and it’s run by the former sous chef of the beer hall, which we loved, so you know you’re in good hands. photo credit: Angel Tucker" - Grace Kelly

I visited CRU PVD for Saturday brunch at 9 AM with a friend, and my first impression was great! The interior design immediately stood out—modern, stylish, and reminiscent of Northern Europe, where I lived for two months about a decade ago. The ambiance felt fresh and inviting, making it a great spot to start the weekend. The service was excellent. The staff had a welcoming and positive vibe, and my server, in particular, was incredibly friendly, kind, and attentive. It made the experience even more enjoyable. As for the food, I ordered the Dutch baby and a burrito. Both were good, but not particularly memorable. They were well-prepared, but I wouldn’t say they stood out enough to make me crave them again. That said, I’m open to trying a different dish on my next visit. One downside was the music. The volume was unnecessarily loud, and the choice of old punky pop music felt out of place for a relaxed brunch setting. It disrupted the otherwise comfortable atmosphere, making it harder to enjoy a slow, peaceful morning meal. Overall, CRU PVD has a lot of potential. The interior and service are fantastic, and the food is solid, though I’d love to explore more of the menu. I just hope they reconsider the music choice or volume to better match the light and cozy brunch experience many people look for. I’ll be back, but maybe with earplugs!

Great service, atmosphere and the food is unbelievable. If you're going for a brunch, you want to get the coffee cake or the giant pop tart. Every single thing on the menu is delicious and worth the reasonable price.

We visited CRU PVD for dinner last week and it was nothing short of amazing. Everything from our appetizer - you HAVE to order the Cannellini Bean Hummus - main courses, dessert, the atmosphere...all top notch! Our favorite however had to be our waiter for the evening, Michael. He made us feel right at home with his humor, his kindness and outstanding recommendations. We'll be back to visit again! - knee-mow-tah

Google
Really cute brunch place and they have dinner. The chilaquiles were delicious. My eggs Benny were also really good. The pancakes hit our sweet spot. We shared. Oh and the frozen Irish coffees got us woke in the best way. Easy in and out. Free parking.

What a great addition to the neighborhood! Great cocktails, cool atmosphere, friendly service, refreshing appetizers. Will definitely be back (Only complaint is that the back to back booths aren’t well constructed—earthquake for me & my dining neighbor every time either of us shifted.)

Google
Great service, food and ambiance. We ordered this amazing savory crab dip for a starter. The broccoli raab sandwich was served on fresh, spongy focaccia. It was filling despite being vegetarian, but not too heavy. Husband loved the red chimi chicken leg. Finally, the banana banoffee pudding was divine. Not too sweet, lots of fun textures with the toffee and nikla wafers and fresh cream. Complimented the caramel and banana well.

Google
I was a big fan of Bayberry Beer Hall and I'll be honest and say I didn't have big expectations for CRU. However, I've been there several times for dinner and brunch and every time I've come away extremely pleased with my experience. The food is really good, the menu changes seasonally, and hits that sweet spot of having many choices that feel healthy but also delicious. The price is very reasonable for the quality as well. Drinks are great, with some good cocktails and solid beer list. Service has also been great as well.

There are no words to describe my experience here. The food, the service, the ambiance, etc. were top tier. Came for Mother’s Day and was beyond pleased with our visit. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
as soon as I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly gentleman, he asked if I'd been before and when I told him it was my first visit he smiled and said welcome! we got the cheesy garlic bread starter... oh my it was amazing!!!! as my main course I ordered the steak tips dinner, the delicious sauce they cook it in was the best!!! and the roasted potatoes were perfect with a bit of crisp on the outside and soft and puffy inside. I highly recommended this meal!! and to finish it off we had cherry cheesecake!!! even if you're just looking for dessert it's worth the trip!! and order the frozen lemonade... trust me!! the waiter we had, Michael, and the GM Tara, were so very nice, informative and so engaging with all the guests. I honestly give them a 10 out of 5, you will not be dissatisfied ! can't wait to go there for brunch!!

Yelp
This was my second time going to Cru since I stopped by the first week they opened! We got a bunch of different dishes to share. For drinks, I got a matchatini which was delicious (and one of the better matcha drinks I've had). For appetizers, we got the cheesy garlic bread, olive oil shrimp, and loaded baby tater tots. The cheesy garlic bread was delicious, though the sauce on the side didn't seem to go that well with the bread. The shrimp was also a refreshing appetizer and was similar to crudo. The loaded tater tots were probably my favorite appetizer - there was so much and they were nice and crispy. For entrees, we got the pork schnitzel, summer pasta, and the ribs. The schnitzel is probably my favorite item on the menu since it's a relatively large cut and also very crispy. The summer pasta was a nice addition to the pork. The ribs were probably our least favorite since they were a bit more on the rare side, but it was still good! We finished off with the blueberry cheesecake, which was the perfect way to end our meal.

Yelp
I was in town with my family and the other reviews for CRU drew us straight in for brunch. We had such a fun experience and look fwd to returning in the future. Service: I can't express how kind & welcoming everyone at the front of house were. We were traveling with our (very hungry) toddler, who the staff gifted with one of their notebooks. It was a kind gesture, which are her day and calmed her down until her meal arrived. Food: I regretfully didn't take any pictures, but we ordered scrambled eggs, hash browns, chilaquiles, and the (seasonal special?) kimchi egg sandwich. The quality of everything was exceptional. The eggs felt fresh rather than from a carton. The chilaquiles were the right amount of crunchy and soft (the seasoning from the sauce was SO flavorful), and the added kimchi mayo was a fun take on their egg sandwich. I would have liked to see an actual kimchi garnish for an added kick, but this was exactly as it was described. And y'all... Do not sleep on these hash browns!! We were kicking ourselves for not picking up an extra order to-go!

Yelp
This was my first time at CRU PVD Kitchen & Bar. I checked it out with a friend for brunch on a Sunday. I had made a reservation and were seated right away. CRU PVD Kitchen & Bar gives a warm and welcoming vibe and it smelled so good. Previously Bayberry Beer Garden was in this space, but I've never had an opportunity to visit it. My friend said CRU PVD Kitchen & Bar did a lot of renovations to make it their own space, but there is still some remnants like an exposed brick wall. Looking at the cocktail menu, my eyes were immediately drawn to the matcha-tini ($16.00). OMG WHAT??!! I'm not a big fan of espresso martini, so when I saw the matcha-tini, I had to absolutely get it. I asked the server if I could substitute oat milk with whole milk and that was no problem. The matcha-tini also had japanese vodka, genepy, honey, and matcha tea. It was so smooth and the perfect combination. For food, we had the Dean St. Breakfast Burrito ($11) and added house-made chicken sausage ($3). The burrito had scrambled eggs, baby hash-browns, cheddar cheese, and garlic-chili aioli all wrapped in a tortilla. It was stuffed with prime and fresh ingredients. I enjoyed every single bite of this burrito and it was very filling. Both the drink and food were delivered quickly and were perfect. Fafi was our server and was very friendly. I can't wait to visit CRU PVD Kitchen & Bar again for brunch or for dinner.

Yelp
I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day so I always take hubby out for a non-valentine's day dinner sometime before the 14th. This year, I selected CRU PVD for their Providence Restaurant Week menu. It used to be the Bayberry Beer Hall. The new decor is gorgeous! Our server was a delight! He offered great suggestions, provided us with beverage samples & allowed us to switch out one appetizer. We started with a dirty CRU Vodka martini with blue cheese-stuffed olives. It is a vodka made special for CRU - super smooth. If I had to nitpick, it would be that the olives were industrially stuffed with blue cheese, not done by hand in the kitchen. That being said, it was a great start to an outstanding meal! I opted for the wine pairings while hubby enjoyed a Moniker Brewery pilsner. The appetizer was paired with a Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne Blanc, main course with Anciano Crianza Rioja & dessert with Guidobono Barbera. I enjoyed all of them. I also sampled the house rosé on tap. We upgraded one appetizer to try the white bean hummus but everything else was right off the menu. The butter bean hummus with warm pita & Aleppo chili crunch was the stuff that dreams are made of! It was so creamy & the chili crunch was just the right amount of spicy, I could have made a meal of those warm pitas! I selected the lamb tartare with herbs, pickled mustard seeds, semolina-sourdough cracker. It was earthy & delicious. Hubby selected the colossal shrimp with crispy rice, daikon radish, xo sauce, furikake. Let's all just say "furikake" out loud, over & over (it makes us laugh!). The shrimp were perfectly cooked, the crispy rice was a nice bite & the sauce pulled it all together. I ordered the duck raviolo, grana padano brodo & radicchio. Beautiful & savory. I was a bit on the full side by this point, so I took the rest home & had it for breakfast. YUM! We shared the cream puff with dark chocolate sauce & the blood orange sorbet sprinkled with course sea salt. Two very different desserts & both were so good. We can't wait to go back to try other delicious items off the menu & another order of the white bean hummus! Highly recommend. NOM NOM NOM #YUM

Yelp
Went for brunch and the food was delicious. The pop tart was flaky and flavorful without being very sweet, it was an unexpected treat (big enough to share among 4-6 people). If you like mezcal, the Gabriella is a must try, smokey with a hint of heat. Juan was our waiter, he was very friendly and attentive.

Yelp
It was low key mid for brunch. The food presentation wasn't that good so I didn't even end up taking pictures. Just as bland as the presentation, the flavor was also lacking. The decor and vibes of the restaurant are good and the service was excellent but otherwise Cru was overrated and I found myself disappointed. I would rather go to a dingy diner with good food next time than settle for good interior design and mediocre food.

Yelp
I really wanted to like CRU. Bayberry Beer Hall got us through the pandemic, so we're big fans of the chef's food. Today was our second time there, and it was another let down. The first time was right after they opened, and our roasted chicken dish had soft, improperly cooked skin with sad vegetables. We came back today for brunch after hearing good things. It was my wife's birthday, and she wanted to try the dutch babies. I made a reservation where I indicated that it was her birthday, and it wasn't acknowledged at all. The dutch babies ended up being pretty good, but they came out well before the rest of our food. We wanted more syrup for our dutch babies as well as more coffee, and couldn't flag down our waiter after multiple attempts. The restaurant was half full at this point, so I'm not sure what was going on. We were finishing our lukewarm dutch babies once the rest of our food came, and it was all pretty meh, except the pastrami carrots. To add insult to injury, as we were wrapping up, the table behind us got a dutch baby with a birthday candle. We moved to Providence, in part, because of the great local restaurants, so we desperately want to see neighborhood spots like CRU succeed. I hope our experience was an aberration and not the norm.

Yelp
We had a great breakfast here a couple weeks ago. From the welcoming and informative host who also ended up being our server, to the delicious food, we loved it here! I had the breakfast burrito and my dining companion had the Dutch baby. We were both very happy! We had recently dined at CRU Newport for brunch. The menu and concept is completely different. This is sit down versus counter service at Newport. They also offer dinner at this location.

Yelp
The service was great, and my cod with curry was acceptable But, my ist is that I ordered a burger cooked rare, the only proper way to present one, and was told that they will not cook it less than medium. This is a big mistake-every other similar restaurant, such as Red Stripe, has no problem with a delicious rare burger. I think they should consider pleasing the customer with a reasonable request

Yelp
Love the upscale modern atmosphere and the elevated comfort food! The staff were so friendly and welcoming and offered us a notebook to sign when our check arrived - such a fun and friendly idea! The croque madame sandwich was absolutely stunning in presentation and taste - a must try!

Yelp
I have been twice for brunch and both times are scrumptious. The cocktails, wait staff and the shing star the food were all amazing. Thry had a special raspberry pop tart that was huge & phenomenal a MUST. I loved their hash browns also. I can't say a negative word. I felt that the waitstaff knows there food & drinks and made great recommendations. Going back fo sho!

Yelp
Wish I could give this place a better rating, but my experience was just not as great as I hoped. I visited with four friends on a Sunday morning for brunch. The host was a bit standoffish when I asked if they had a table for five. The wait was around 30 minutes, which we were fine with. After getting seated, the food then took another 45 minutes to get to our table. I was first served my side of eggs and bacon, which were well cooked, but basic and uninspired. After waiting another ten minutes I finally got my pancake, which was delicious, but a bit one note after a few bites. It could have used a fruit topping to freshen it up. Overall, I personally feel the host was not welcoming, service was too slow, and food was okay, but not worth the total wait of 1 hour & 15 minutes. I did enjoy the interior finishes and ambience inside. Wish them all the best, but probably won't be visiting again for brunch. I may return to give the Dinner menu a shot.

Yelp
If you are in downtown by the main Post office and want to have a bite' this is the place. Along side you will be helping out future cheefs and waiters of our Rhode Island. This venue we offer an ambiance that remind you those long nights at the library during college times BUT you get excellent food and peace and quiet. The best of two worlds. Totally recommend this venue. Let's support our LOVELY RHODE ISLAND

Yelp
This hummus and bread was to die for. Olives were amazeballs too. Frozen margaritas were on point. Above all the staff, Kayleigh and Katie and Michael (the dancer) were so fun and welcoming.

Yelp
Went in with high expectations after reading the menu and was not disappointed! The space is big and open, but still feels so cozy. Love the open kitchen. Service was top notch, everyone was so sweet and attentive. The weekend brunch menu has some unique flavors that are done beautifully! Loved the miso honey butter and it's always great to see a dutch baby on a menu. And the portions are perfect! (even the kid's portions are pretty big!).

Yelp
Second time coming to this restaurant and the food is AMAZING. The flavors... MY GOD. The service is amazing; very welcoming staff and very friendly. The cocktails are very good. The ambience is lovely. My husband and I agreed that this is our new favorite spot in Providence.

Yelp
Went in by myself and enjoyed a burger at the bar. The service was friendly and quick. I used to frequent bayberry here, specifically for the burger and I have missed it so much this is a perfect replacement. My fav burger spot is back!

Yelp
The food was delicious! The staff was really friendly and gave great recommendations. I really appreciate that they had a number of non-alcoholic cocktails, our phony negroni was amazing. I wish I had saved room for dessert. Will definitely come back.

Brooke S.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the drinks were tasty, the service was great (Michael is a riot) and the ambiance was nice. I highly recommend folks check out CRU!

Yelp
I stopped by on a whim for apps and a drink. I loved the food, service, and style of this place. They showcase artwork from local artists, which is a nice detail. Our server, Kalea, was attentive and sweet. I'll be back to try more from the menu!

Yelp

Yelp
Great elevated breakfast, with the basics and more. Very fresh, great vibe, friendly service. Just what Providence needed!

Yelp
Food and service were excellent! Cool place to also just chill and have drinks......................

Karina T.

Yelp
My friends and I were so excited to try here. Our waiter was very nice! Unfortunately we wanted the Dutch baby for the table but after ordering said they ran out. Next, we waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for our food. Once we got it (I got the chilaquiles), my eggs were over hard. We didn't get anything discounted/ taken off the bill

Jen G.

Yelp
Wow! We've been meaning to get here since it opened late December and finally made it. You would think looking at this restaurant with the open floor plan that it wouldn't be as warm as it is, but it really is a great environment. for drinks, we had the open fire and the this and yap. both were exceptional and the price is right. When can you get a $12 cocktail in Providence????? The Caesar salad appetizer was excellent and is enough to share for two. The pork schnitzel was great and I will definitely order it again. The roasted squash entrée was hearty, warm and flavorful. We were able to walk in on a Saturday night at 6:30 and get a table, I bet the next time we try to come here they'll be a line. They are on to something right here .....
