I know I have high heat tolerance, but not this high! Did the spice fairy put a curse on your restaurant or something? I'm sorry, but Crudo didn't do it for me. The dishes and drink were interesting in theory but uninspired and one-dimensional in practice.
I had the opportunity to try the following:
- Jalapeno Hamachi
- Salmon Lovers Maki
- Pork Buns
- Bad Hombre (drink)
The fish quality of the Jalapeno Hamachi was excellent, and the sauce had a lightly acidic/citrusy flavor. However, if there was heat in the Yuzu Kosho, it got buried somewhere. The jalapenos it was topped with also seemed to lack any spiciness.
The Salmon Lovers Maki had a few things going for it. First, the pieces were quite large, and I am a fan of the lightly torched salmon on top. The torching adds a unique char/crispness, for lack of a better term. However, salmon is not inherently a very flavorful fish, nor is cucumber or avocado. The spicy aioli was lost on me, and the tobiko seemed to be sprinkled on as an afterthought.
Pork Buns are a weakness of mine that I rarely miss! The pork was cooked very nicely and was very tender and roast-y! I also quite liked the crispness offered by the lotus root chip. The lettuce didn't add a noticeable freshness and seemed to only be a barrier between the mayo and the pork. Now, reading the menu, I see there is supposed to be wasabi aioli... but the wasabi was MIA. I remember trying this and thinking, "ah, this is mayo," Looking at the menu now, I am half-surprised, half-not.
At this point, you can guess what is coming with the Bad Hombre. This tasted like weakly boozy water. The lime did not shine through, and I doubt there was muddled jalapeno. A little round (like on the hamachi) floating within offering a wisp of heat; about the only other thing setting the Bad Hombre apart from water.
The vibe in Crudo is a little unexpected. The music, especially on the second floor, is loud-ish. Mostly reddish lighting dances through the place, which may sound entertaining, but in practice, it is like a funky filter on what my food looks like! Especially the reds of tobiko and salmon get hidden.
The service left just a little to be desired in terms of attentiveness. I do not expect to be attended to hand and foot, and friendly conversation between staff is perfectly okay. However, at least keep the corner of your eye out.
I am okay to drop over $100 on food if I get good value. Crudo, wasn't it. These four items cost me $82 after tax and tip, and I left unsatisfied and desiring more.
