Austin Cocktail Bar Bosses Office Opens New Cafe Break Room | Eater Austin

"A climbing gym is opening a new Pflugerville location in early fall that will also expand its on-site food offerings, already confirmed to include fried chicken from Spicy Boys and coffee from Spokesman; the gym is seeking a third food business to complete the lineup." - Nadia Chaudhury

We had such a wonderful experience at Crux every time we came! The facilities are great, but what really stood out was the customer service. Our family ran into a small issue with the kids play area during one of our visits, and Georgie went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of. He was kind, attentive, and truly made us feel welcome. It’s rare to find staff who care so much about creating a positive experience, and Georgie absolutely did that for us. Thanks to him, our kids left with big smiles, and so did we. We’ll definitely be coming back and recommending Crux to friends and family and we already booked the space for my son's birthday party!

Probably the best bouldering gym I've ever been too, the staff are so nice and accommodating, the holds are nice and the routes are super fun. The grading scale goes from VB to V11+ so there's something for everyone, the gym is brand new and super fancy, there's a small weights area, kilter board, and even sound proof rooms for remote work. There's also a huge area for lead climbing as well as top rope with auto belays and some manual belays, they offer a free class to get belay certified if you aren't already. They also have a small crack climbing wall. Definitely recommend to anyone!!

My husband and our six-year-old daughter have been coming here since last month, and they both absolutely love this place. There are plenty of workout options for all ages and skill levels, making it a great fit for our family. I signed up today, and Dakota at the front desk was fantastic—polite, patient, and incredibly helpful. Since I haven’t climbed much before, I was nervous about trying it on my own. Dakota took the time to explain everything clearly and made sure I felt confident before I started. His support made all the difference! The gym is well-maintained and uses top-quality equipment from reputable brands like Rogue, which adds to the overall experience. I’m excited to start this journey, challenge myself, and make this a regular part of my routine!

This location is awesome, if you live in the area this is the place to go to. Plenty of bouldering, top rope, lead, crack, and speed climbing. Something for everyone. The workout space is very nice, tons of room. Upstairs are the fingerboards with moon, tensions and kilter boards, work and community spaces along with the yoga classes. Very impressed with the variety of training options. The kids area is also a lot bigger than any of the other facilities. Restrooms and storage are 10/10, this one also has the sauna. Cannot wait to come back it is definitely my favorite climbing gym in Austin!

Overall, a great place to climb or work out. Two ways it could be better: 1- Set A/C a bit cooler. Gets steamy, especially on the top rope routes. 2- Keep floors and other surfaces cleaner. Especially in the fitness rooms, the floors are often not wet-mopped for several days at a time. As people walk around and throw down mats, all that chalk, street dirt, and hair gets churned up into the air and into our lungs. Thank you!!

My wife and I took the beginner class to get our feet wet and wound signing up for a membership. Hayley is an amazing instructor and quickly made us feel comfortable and learning quickly! The facility is amazing with great walls and great fitness equipment. The staff is super friendly and the vibe is great.

Amazing place. Was built around a year ago but still looks brand new. The employees are amazingly friendly, and the prices aren’t that bad for a climbing gym this good. The people that go there regularly are really friendly and fun to climb with. Not only is it a climbing gym, but it also has a workout gym, study lockers, and a ping pong table. It’s an amazing place to hangout on an empty day.

This is one of the nicest climbing gyms I’ve ever been to. There’s literally nothing I can imagine they don’t have. It’s an incredible space. They have lead climbing, top rope and auto belay routes ranging from 40-60ft high. They have a huge bouldering area, finger boards, kilter board (adjustable), a moon board. They have an area to lift weight, closed meeting/work spaces, community areas, a giant kids room. They have an area for fitness classes, yoga classes, locker rooms, showers, sauna. They have a coffee shop, food truck. They even have walls for crack climbing, speed climbing. Everything you could think of. I’m so glad they have this in my area.

Yelp
TLDR; I had a really negative experience at this gym. The gym itself seems all right; kind of on the smaller side but it wasn't too crowded on a Friday in the middle of the day which was nice. It did seem clean and they had loaner gear available, which I always think is nice. The real problem was the bizarre belay approval process. I climbed at Crux in Austin years ago and I was in the system as being permitted to belay both top-rope and lead. It wasn't showing up in the system, but maybe it expires after a few years? Ok, so no big deal, I figured I will just do the belay test. So this guy comes over and offers to do the top-rope belay test first, which I was like ok sounds good. He asked me to tie in first as if I were climbing. Which I did. Then he's like "what did you do?" So I explained to him that I tied a double figure-8 through my harness, which is doubled-back, and the knot isn't too far from my harness, and the tail isn't too long. Then he's like "why did you do this? It's not enough just to do it right, you have to know why you're doing it." So I'm like, ok, um.. because I don't want to fall down? It was just really weird, like he even told me there's nothing wrong with how I tied it, but he wasn't satisfied. He wanted to know "How do you know it's a double figure 8?" I was just totally perplexed. I was like "Um, because that's what the knot looks like??" It seems like he was looking for some kind of secret password or something. I thought maybe he wasn't happy about the tail (I normally leave like a 4-6 inch tail but I have been to gyms where they actually require you to leave a long tail and tie it off with a double overhand knot). So I offered to redo it with a longer tail and he was like "no, that's not the problem." So I was like "can i just retest a little later?" because I figured i would look up what the american alpine club recommends for the length of the tail and then do it again. At this point, he said "yeah that's no problem you can do it again within 24 hours." My friend who was with me also heard him. I thought it was strange "why within 24 hours?" but I was thinking like in 10 mins so I was like ok. Then I came back and asked to retest and he said "No, I meant AFTER 24 hours" which actually makes more SENSE but it's not what he actually SAID. And I wouldn't have given up so easily if I had known that he wouldn't let me try again! Anyways the whole experience was just really weird and off-putting. He didn't even let me do an actual belay test, but he told me I could still climb on top-rope which meant I was climbing on my own knot which I was tying EXACTLY as I'd shown him, and he was apparently ok with it. So what exactly is the point of not letting me do the test? If he actually thought there was anything wrong with how I tied in, then I would REALLY HOPE he would have brought it to my attention. But he didn't. I thought the whole point of having people test is to make sure they are climbing safely? But it doesn't seem like safety was the issue. I can't honestly say what the issue was, it's like the guy just didn't like me or something. Just as background, I learned to climb over 20 years ago and some things have changed but as far as I can tell, nothing about tying in to climb on a top rope has changed.

Yelp
My climber friend has a membership here, and she brought me as a guest. I was impressed by how clean this gym looks. There's a good amount of bouldering and top rope as well. They gave us all harnesses to borrow for free because it was our first time, so we did the auto belay routes. They have a lot of traditional belay routes, but none of us are certified. There's only a few auto belay routes, and most of them are higher grades. There was an awkward moment when I went to go try an easier auto belay, and an instructor was giving a safety tour standing by the route. I asked if he was using the auto belay, and he said he was going to demonstrate how to clip with that one. He hadn't actually started yet. He could've moved a few inches and used any of the other (all unoccupied) ones to show how to clip, but he insisted on using that one. I get that they need to do the safety tour for liability purposes, but none of the other climbing gyms I have been to in Austin require one. I thought signing the waiver would cover it, but they still said they were required to walk us through a tour even though we said all of us had climbed before. I'd rather be offered another waiver to sign to opt out of a long demonstration where they show you how to climb and fall. They have a study area on the second floor with private rooms. The large open area with the big table is not the best for working as the benches don't have backs. We asked an employee to unlock the large study room, which was more comfortable.

Yelp
Finally they have a climbing gym!! They offer rope walls and boulders. Great for all ages. They have a small underhang area, which is my favorite Spicy boys food truck outside!!! What!!! Great food for before or after your climbing session

Yelp
Pretty cool places for kids! We enjoyed it and will be back. However orientation should explain that the green ropes are for those who've taken a class for it and provide more info on when the classes are. As a newbie to rock climbing I just didn't have any idea and my kid kept begging to climb those areas but we couldn't.

Yelp
I love crux. I've been a member for ~1.5yrs. The staff has always been very welcoming and supportive. They're super friendly, genuine, and nice to speak with. The gym feels like home. The new pflugerville location is also very very nice. I love their route setting as well. Crux is definitely my favorite climbing gym in the Austin area

Yelp
wow. Surly staff answering the phone. Not a great first impression. Called to see about driving over to spend a few hours, ended up on the phone with an abrasive young lady who was combative and confrontational. I dont need a membership, so I just wanted a day pass for me and a couple of kiddos. I asked about if we have to create an account to participate. Yes, you do. (the young lady told me I could lie or make up information but that I had to fill it out to participate.) Create an account? In order to participate for a couple of hours? For those of you who may not know, many companies add this unnecessary extra step as an additional revenue source - they love to sell this information to data brokers who then add these kinds of purchases and buying histories to a profile in your name. (maybe this company does, maybe they don't). The point is, it's nobody else's business if I want to let my kids climb for 2 hours. For 30 years I have been doing these kinds of activities, and I could just take a paper doc that was a liability waiver, sign it, and move on. But now, they want you to fill out an entire multi-page dossier (name, address, sex, birthday, SSN, address, employment information and on and on and on) to attend. They will tell you it's necessary, but a standard liability waiver would suffice. Why do they need all of this additional information for a day pass? They don't... So, to recap: invasive data harvesting, lack of respect for my privacy, and a snotty staff are a dealbreaker for me! No company needs this much of your personal information!!

Yelp
Great gym, organized and professional employees. First time is free of charge, they don't let children run amuck. Very pleasant experience.

Yelp
Nice facility, awesome staff and great ambiance overall! I'm definitely a new face to the climbing world but the crux team is so welcoming and love to help you out when you may find yourself needing help or simply answering whatever questions you might have. Kathrine helped me shop for my first pair of climbing shoes today and she really took her time to listen to my wants and needs in a shoe and found me just the right pair. Looking forward to spending more time here!

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best new climbing gyms out there!! They have a variety of climbs to try with a super cool overhand section on ropes. The staff is super nice and the facility is spotless! I would definitely recommend coming up here it's worth the drive!

Yelp
Took an awesome tour, fitness class with Tatiana, and climbed some lead routes. Cool climbing facility!
