Best Barbecue Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Way up north in Cave Creek, Cody Elgin has emerged as a great barbecue talent. He opened Cryin’ Coyote in 2023, replacing a local legend on the main strip. His top meats are ribs, hauntingly spiced andouille sausage, and thick-cut fatty brisket (you have to ask for fatty). Elgin smokes half and whole chickens. Sometimes on Saturdays, he fries and smokes chicken wings. Popular sides include elote, Alabama white slaw, and a chile-charged cornbread. The best seats are on the patio, where cars roll by and the desert hills loom." - Chris Malloy

Google
Great place to stop for BBQ. The owner was there and he was amazing and helpful for everyone in our party (6). Guided us through options and made recommendations. Great brisket and chicken. Really loved the banana pudding. Will definitely come back again.

Google
That was some good stuff. Cody, the owner, came out to chat with customers every so often. I had a nice 15-minute chat with him. Come to find out everything outside of the bums and bread is made in house using family recipes. All 3 sauces are made with real sugar, not syrup. Add potato salad garnished with crispy bacon bits was so good they didn't have mac and cheese but they do have is a rice cheese blend I would also delicious the brisket with soft moist and juicy with a happy medium of fat flavor try to stay up and not too tired and the short ribs what I do find interesting is none of the barbecue meat is made with barbecue sauce on a weather cooks or after it's cooked it's just smoked and or baked. Cave Creek is about 35 Mi away from where I live here in the valley but I will definitely be going back to crying coyotes barbecue it's a drive but just like any place it's worth it I highly recommend it and there's more stuff I have to check out on another cheat day. All three of the sauces one is a mustard base one is a spicy sauce base in the other kids BBQ base and they each complement the meat in their own unique ways but really amplify the flavor of said meet oh God it was so good. I apologize for not having photos of my desert but I got a homemade chocolate chip cookie that had a nice definite melted hot chocolate taste to it with a hint of walnuts I don't know if once in the cookies but that's what my cow tongue picked up on. That ice cold root beer definitely complimented the meal I should have ordered a milk to go with the cookies live and learn I'll remember that next time I go by like I said it's a long trip but good food is worth any traveled. Thank you all very much for reading my review. I hope you all check it out at your leisure. Until next time, take care and good night.

Google
Amazing BBQ in a quaint location. We had the ribs and a chopped brisket sandwich, as well as coleslaw and potato salad for sides. The brisket was so delicious we subsequently ordered an extra pound to take home! Everyone we interacted with was so friendly, they went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. If you’re in the Cave Creek or Carefree area, this is a legit BBQ joint!

Google
This place was by far the best BBQ place I've been to. The food was absolutely delicious! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with 2 sides of chile relleno rice and the loaded potato salad. Great atmosphere, customer service and I plan on going back to try some of the other options.

Google
Owner/pitmaster Cody runs a nice clean restaurant with great BBQ! We were greeted nicely with smiles from the friendly staff. Our group enjoyed the brisket, ribs & especially the wings! All the sides were delicious, especially the potato salad, slaw & beans. You don't want to miss the cornbread muffins. Highly recommend.

Google
Great brisket sandwich and good BBQ sauces to pick from. The cornbread is excellent. Definitely a great place for BBQ in Cave Creek.

Yelp
I'll start with saying I am not a fan of bbq. The things we do for the people we love. Haha. My husband is the BBQ Connoisseur and has been all over. I usually go for the sides. I will say this place really impressed me! We got a platter that would normally feed 3-4 people but for under $90, you literally get a sampling of everything and all the sides! Everything was delicious. Not super Smokey. Just simple done right! People were super nice and friendly. Service was great! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
1000% better than the BBQ places in phoenix. staying at the JW ressort we took a little drive up to this Amazing little town. Hands down we all agreed Best Bbq in 10 years. Beef Brisket melted in our mouths, even the kids had their own order. Chicken half woooowwiie mmm so good, great bark, great tender smoked chicken. Beef Brisket sandwiches had fresh buns.. not stale, fresh juicy meat! bbq Dr. pepper beans soo great, my favorite potato salad that had bacon on-top.. Can i get a Whooop Whoop?!!! Green chili corn bread so great, literally we could eat this every day! Thank you to the pretty Red head woman working the register. Great customer service. Our kids were hungry and hyper ready to devour their bbq! The tables were all clean, restaurant is very well kept clean. The staff all were on their A game tonight.

Yelp
We give this joint two thumbs up. Our meals featured generous helpings and were very tasty. Staff was helpful and cordial, we would eat here again for sure.

Yelp
So far from my house but finally made the trek, not disappointed at all! Service was great. Nice little place. Everyone i met was very friendly and I chopped it up with the owner (sorry, bad with names) and you can see the pride he has as a pit master. Brisket- 8/10. i ordered the fatty. Was pretty good. A touch on the dryer side but great texture and flavor. If i could use sauce it would have been a 9. Ribs-10/10. This is probably now the best ribs I've had out here. So flavorful and moist. Great crust. I bit into a rib and it squirted a fatty juicy happiness in my mouth. I've never had a rib squirt juice. I loved it! Andouille sausages-10/10. They were so good i bought some to take home. I did taste a touch of each sauce and the red sauce was my favorite. Really good. When i can cheat i'll have to try some of those sides and desserts. Highly recommended!!!!!

Yelp
From the cool, small town setting, to the delicious barbecue, to the hometown hospitality, this place was unmatched in all of those. This barbecue joint was about an hour outside of our destination and it was so good We made the drive twice to eat there. We had pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, beans, corn bread, and pretty much everything else on the menu. We could not even pick a favorite dish. The owner told us about the town and gave the kids some Texas sheet cake after our meal. Next time I visit AZ I'm making the trek here no matter the distance.

BK W.

Yelp
Best BBQ I've had in a long time! And the ribs are so meaty & tender. Will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Divine bbq. So many good meats. Brisket and sausages are great. Ribs are insane. If you're with a group, get the big shared platter. Great to try everything.
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
Ambiance was perfect for a bbq place. Service was very friendly and kind. Explained the menu. Had ribs and brisket- both were excellent. The relleno rice was exceptional. Street corn was equally as good. Allot of bbq places in the area and now have tried them all. Cryin Coyote is the best from an overall perspective. Love everything about this place . Will be back !!!!

Yelp
Great spot to check out if you're in Cave Creek, or nearby! Great service from the start and they come up and check in on you during your visit. Food was delicious! I went with the pulled pork sandwich and added their red sauce which is warmed up (red, brown and gold are available. Not spicy in my opinion). For a side I went with two - the Chile Relleno Rice and Esquites Street Corn. The rice was good but if you're in between two, I'd go with the Esquites and then add some of their red sauce to it. Chill and laid back when I visited. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
- Friendly, helpful staff - Love the casual laid back atmosphere with picnic tables and booths. - Delicious ribs and pulled pork sandwich both were seasoned perfectly, corn bread was served warm and scrumptious - Do not skip on the dessert: Texas sheet cake was on point and so moist and addictive

Marcia N.

Yelp
A Family business that is delicious and it's always served with a smile. We tried it once and now we are addicted. We don't usually visit chain restaurants. This is our favorite BBQ joint. Always good, always get a visit from Cody. He wants to make sure you're getting what you pay for and the baked potato is amazing. We share it and it's very big. Get it loaded and you will find a new addiction.

Yelp
Craving bbq, so we stopped by on our way home for lunch. Greeted by a very smiley, sweet girl. Meat fell off the ribs, the fatty brisket was my favorite but my boyfriend didn't care for it. The beans were really good, were sweet and spicy. We also got the corn bread! Definitely the star of the show! The street corn was good as well!
google avatar

Yelp
I've eaten here twice now and it is some of the best bbq I've had! It's been a challenge to find a good bbq spot in the north Phoenix/Cave Creek area and I have loved everything I've tried! The pork is awesome and so is the brisket. There are good portions of everything and the beans, fries, and rice sides are amazing. It has a southwest flair and a few different sauces to choose from. The brown and gold are my favorites! The servers are also so friendly and the restaurant itself is so cute and has a nice outdoor patio.
google avatar

Mack W.

Yelp
Food is amazing, I love how they have vegetarian options and the pulled jackfruit is delicious. The people are above and beyond, so kind and caring, grateful to have Cryin Coyote in Cave Creek!

Yelp
I am staying in Carefree with a friend who has limited mobility. We wanted to get some BBQ to celebrate the 4th of July. I called to place a takeout order for a scheduled pick up. Lily was super patient with me as I scrambled to find the menu for my order. Our food was ready at the scheduled time, and the staff was very welcoming. Everything we ordered was delicious and the portions were generous enough for leftovers the next day. I don't think you could make a mistake ordering.

Kathy S.

Yelp
Great BBQ. Friendly staff, clean restaurant. They offer three different sauces and we tried them all. Could have given a bit more meat for the price but we were satisfied.
google avatar

Elsa L.

Yelp
Great service and great food. We had the ribs and baked potatoes, so good and I recommend the spicy bbq sauce. We will be back!

C P.

Yelp
I ordered 2lb brisket (lean), 2lb pulled pork, full rack of ribs, 1 qt of beans, and all 4 sauces for a party. Food was ready for pickup on time, everything accounted for. The quality and flavor for everything was outstanding. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Good BBQ, friendly service, and overpriced for what it is. Not much more needs to be said.

Yelp
Cryin' Coyote BBQ = BBQ Heaven I'm still thinking about this meal 8 hours later--and I don't usually get emotional about food, but Cryin' Coyote had me borderline weepy (in a good way). Let's talk about that pulled chicken. Normally, pulled chicken is dry, sad, and something I actively avoid. Not here. This stuff was juicy, flavorful, and borderline magical. Who knew chicken could be the star of a BBQ place? (*disclaimer: I didn't order the ribs and sausage) The Dr Pepper Beans? Sweet, smoky, and addictive. If they sold them by the gallon, I'd be in trouble. Now, the green chile cornbread... listen, I regret not ordering extra. I'd write a country song about that cornbread. It was spicy, sweet, and everything cornbread dreams are made of. And the Texas sheet cake--HOLY CHOCOLATE. Best. Chocolate. Cake. Ever. I don't know what kind of wizardry is happening in that kitchen, but I fully support it. Bottom line: Cryin' Coyote crushed it. I showed up hungry and skeptical... left full and in love.

Tammy A.

Yelp
Best bbq in this area. Usually get a chopped brisket sandwich and fries which are my favorite. However, their ribs I've found to be equally as tasty. Mexican street corn is very good. It's a lot of food too in my opinion. I do feel you get your money's worth here.

Barb Q.

Yelp
without this barbecue, oh what would i do? stay home and cook a mess or have stew? sauces red, gold, and brown that don't leave me blue. when people ask about the baked potato, i've definitely had a few. only a few this week. brisket melts my heart, and makes my knees weak. and that potato salad, is extremely valid. so good i might make song and call up DJ Khalid. but did i mention, they also serve a side salad? food is a so good that im in a trance. might wear my rolex there, and dip it in their house ranch. oh their andouille sausage, holds me like hostage. i might eat it so much, someone will have to stop this! but don't forget the jalapeno and the other three. you walk into this restaurant, don't know what's to be. but see, they got 3 different teas. passion, unsweetened and another real sweet. and something else real light. like lots of smoked chicken, pulled dark or all white. chili relleno, not your typical white rice. oh, this bbq makes me wanna spend the night. and to think you've had pork ? wait until this juicy meat is stabbed upon your fork. if there were barbecue nerds, i'd definitely be a dork. and the ribs aren't baby back but i'd deliver them like a stork. & i could never dismiss the cornbread, if you've not had it you're still wrong inside the head. dr p beans won't leave you un- read. this bbq joint won't have you mislead. & so much more treasures to find upon your plate. but if i keep writing, to this bbq i'll be late! find out for yourself, come on in and have a taste closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but open eleven am to eight.

Yelp
The food was extremely tasty the staff friendly. My only complaint would be the price in relation to portion.

Holly S.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing it was super clean. The service was amazing and everybody was so nice.

Yelp
I was hoping the BBQ here would still be as good after Bryan's BBQ closed. Thankfully the pulled pork sandwich is still delicious!!! I did also like that there are different BBQ sauces to choose from and you can try them all. I would not recommend the corn as a side but my fiancé had the beans and thought they were pretty good and unique. They were a little sweet for my taste. We'll definitely be back to try some more of their BBQ for sure!
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
It's nice to have a good bbq place in Cave Creek. I'm glad they took over the old Bryan's bbq. Food is very similar to what I remember from old owners. Workers were very friendly and dining room was very welcoming. The pork ribs were as expected. The potato salad had large chunks of potatoes and came with generous amount of bacon topping. The half chicken was very moist and really tasty. The brisket sandwich was good but had lot of fatty pieces and burned ends. Will have to remember to ask for leaner pieces next time. My favorite was the corn bread. Recommend ordering it as a side for sure. Highly recommend! Enjoy!

Alyssa K.

Yelp
Yet another delicious lunch on the patio at Cryin' Coyote. Service is always as great as the food. Beautiful day out! Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is the new kid on the block just opened in early July in Cave Creek. Right now it is online ordering and then you pick up. I imagine as the weather cools the policy could change. There was a large room for seating. It looked inviting cuz it was hot outside and cool and dark inside. Very casual atmosphere and friendly folks. The place is located in the Las Tiendas mall so note that when looking for it. They have plates which include two sides. Your choice of brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, ribs or sausage. There are also sandwiches with one small side. Their sides are typical by the size of small, pint or quart. Drinks include domestic and craft beers, wine, water, milk and soft drinks. Large orders require 48 hours notice. This place took over the Bryan's BBQ location. Bryan has retired. If you love BBQ, come and try it here. Free smells. Small parking lot.

Yelp
So good!! Loved everything... and prices were very reasonable. Hint for the business (get some garlic Aoli! Would be a game changer lol) Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
This place is beyond good! First off the smell, OMG you start drooling as soon as you walk in. Greeted every time with such friendliness it's like your family. Brisket yeah I said. This has the to be the best Brisket in Arizona! Today I had to try something different. So I got the half chicken. Juicy, with perfect flavor not over powered. I love the Coleslaw and their signature sauce's. I absolutely recommend Cryin Coyote BBQ!! Keep up the amazing cooking guys!!
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
I LOVE this brisket!! I went in for the first time today and was so excited to try the bbq. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items. I highly recommend!

Yelp
A great , clean bbq place in cave creek ..the staff was very friendly and helpful. We split the two meat bbq plate. Very yummy.

Yelp
This was some of the best brisket I've ever had! Even if you don't typically eat brisket, it's a must try!

Yelp
I'm from Kentucky and we also had a house in Nashville for 20 years. I'm picky on my BBQ. Love this place! The pulled pork is very lean ...which I love. Cody told me he does it that way because that's the way he likes it. I agree . No one likes biting into fat or gristle. After our first visit eating in, I returned the next week for take out. Overall A+ for me. Nice , clean , fun restaurant. The owner is nice and friendly and eager to help and make sure your meal is on point. And the take out reminds me of my favorite southern joints...and it's reasonably priced. Please support this local business and family!

Felicity S.

Yelp
The food here is so amazing and made with so much love, the meat always tastes fresh and all the food feels homemade, the service is beyond great and all of the employees are the sweetest and are so welcoming, i love this place!

Sandra S.

Yelp
I have reviewed this place before, But today I had the cornbread. Oh my. So good. It comes in individual muffins, moist, tasty, with green chiles for a tiny bit of a kick. I never thought cornbread could be that good. This place is just the best, everything I've had has been outstanding. But you owe it to yourself to try the cornbread.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Great BBQ. Counter service was very friendly. :-) I'm always skeptical about BBQ, however Cryin' Coyote has a nice variety of meats and we were not disappointed. The pulled chicken sandwich was flavorful and the chopped brisket was lean and had a good bark. Adding to the meal was the toasted bun and the pickles. A surprise winner was the red sauce- which was kind of orange looking but tasted great. We'll be back.
google avatar

Zoar R.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but sadly will not be coming back! 1. The brisket sandwich is 90% fat. I literally threw my money away in this place. Had literally two bites and all I tasted was fat. 2. My husband's pull pork was extremely stiff. 3. These two sandwiches were served plain with nothing, no onions, no jalapeños, nothing! Two stiff dry pieces of bread and that was it. 4. We paid $45 dollars, we're still in shock! 5. What's worst was the cashier (tiny girl with glasses) asked us for a tip!!! Like are you kidding me? She actually asked twice as I was signing my credit card receipt. We tipped but...we picked our order when called, threw away our trash, refilled our sodas...I mean seriously why ask for a tip when all you're doing is keying in an order. We should've known better when we walked in on a weekend and it was empty. We will never return.

Brad G.

Yelp
Great place. Good food and nice family run business. Highly recommend. Ribs and all beef was great. They also have an extra dining room for larger groups.

Lisa L.

Yelp
This is the most amazing barbecue around! Food is great- service is great! They just catered a huge party for us and everyone at the party raved about the food! This restaurant you must go to!
google avatar

Wesley C.

Yelp
Cody the new owner had big shoes to fill after taking over for Bryan's Black Mountain BBQ but he's done an awesome job. Great new menu items, ability to choose your own sauces and a BBQ staple - SWEET TEA. Worth the visit.

Nancy R.

Yelp
Super delicious BBQ treat, Cryin' Coyote does not disappoint. Plus, they support Celiac with GF food, including a dedicated fryer. The brisket melted in my mouth and my husband's pulled pork was fantastic. We WILL be back!

Ginny B.

Yelp
Great BBQ! We discovered this place about 6 months ago and love it. The pit master Cody came out and told us about his process and sauces. We've been coming back at least twice a month ever since. Brisket moist and ribs are melt in your mouth good!

Matt S.

Yelp
Brisket and sides were amazing. So tender it almost melted in my mouth. Staff was amazing and very friendly. I'd definitely recommend this for BBQ. Don't miss out!

Haley N.

Yelp
Have to get the ribs or the smoked chicken wings !!!! So good !!! We will be back! Kids loved the skeletons !!!
google avatar

Raciel M.

Yelp
Really good BBQ, friendly staff and clean restaurant. I will be back soon for more BBQ ribs

Chris T.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ! The best brisket I've ever had. Moist and flavorful. Be sure to order at least the 1/2 fatty and 1/2 lean. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Our order came quickly and then the feast began! Sides were excellent too! Especially the street corn and beans. Very comfortable indoor and outdoor dining areas. Plus you can order and take a few pounds of brisket home for a midnight snack! Highly recommend the Coyote if you're in the Cave Creek area!
google avatar

Jean S.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ, friendly staff, great service and plenty of seating inside and out. We were just stopping by Cave Creek since we hadn't been here in a while. We were looking for BBQ and stumbled upon this place. Highly recommend and will be back.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
This place is the real deal! So so good. We ordered to go and they were on top of it- food was done upon arrival and everyone was so sweet and welcoming. Our favorites were the gold sauce, green chili cornbread, and the loaded baked potato salad (comes with smoked bacon). The prices are comparable to other BBQ places in the area and the food beat them by a mile. We're so happy to welcome them to the neighborhood and will be back many times!
