8 Essential Vietnamese Foods to Eat While in Vietnam - AFAR

"Chả Cá Thăng Long is a restaurant in Hanoi where chả cá Lã Vọng is served, tossing turmeric-coated catfish and dill into a hot pan." - Nick Hilden

Chả Cá Thăng Long

"Three outlets with the same name in the same street run by the same family can be a tad confusing! Make a beeline for number 6B; a century-old, pale yellow painted townhouse reached through a small courtyard. The highlight is chả cá, grilled catfish with turmeric, cooked at the table in a sizzling saucepan with spring onions and dill, and deliciously paired with vermicelli noodles, coriander, shrimp paste and peanuts for an intriguing combination of textures." - Michelin Inspector

The fish was still surprisingly a little fishy tasting, not sure if it's a catfish characteristic. But this dish was really so unique and really filling. The shop literally only has 1 item on the menu, the catfish, the do have 1 side of catfish spring roll too. I'd say that this place is a must try for a dish unique to vietnam. Definitely not disappointing at all. Service was also great as the staff cooked for us. Just lovely. I do find the taste gets a little sickening real fast, maybe it could've been just me, it's very jelak in my opinion. But I'd still highly recommend trying it out for a very unique taste.

I am so glad my friend recommended this restaurant to try this turmeric marinated fish dish which I understood is local to Hanoi only. The restaurant is clearly very popular among all the Vietnamese and was simply bustling. Turn around of tables was very very quick. Given they were very busy service was a little bit slow at the start but after we got served everything moved quickly. They help cook the fish and also assemble your first bowl of food for you. All the ingredients were very fresh. I would highly recommend giving this fish dish a try. It’s a set menu so makes ordering very easy. Some of the best spring rolls I have had as well ☺️.

We were recommended to try this dish - cha ca. It was amazing! This restaurant only serves cha ca, and it was done to perfection. The fish was nicely marinated, and the dill added another level of flavour to the entire dish. Food was served promptly, and we were shown how to prepare the dish. Google Maps brought us to one address, but we were ushered to another building, which looks like a newly renovated building. If you visit Hanoi, do not miss this establishment. You will not regret it. My son, who does not enjoy fish, loved it.

Very touristy. Nice to experience once in a lifetime. But I'm sure there are other hole in the wall restaurants that offer even better Cha Ca! Service was very quick and professional. The restaurant is 3 storey high packed to the brim. We felt rushed and couldn't really relax. Still a great experience.

We were recommended this place by our hotel staff. Went in with very low expectations. It was a great experience. The food was delicious. We were lucky to not have to wait. Just one item on the menu and it was absolutely delicious. The spring roll was fresh and crispy. Not too over priced either. Seems like a very popular restaurant in the area. Would highly recommend it if you're ever in the area .

Best meal I had in Hanoi and one of the most beautiful experiences in my mouth of all time. I'm a lover of dill and that in combination with the fish sauce, herbs, peanuts, the bun and of course the perfectly cooked fish is a truly delectable balance of flavours and textures. Combining all these elements reminds me of when you put together those lettuce wraps at Korean BBQ the customizability is simply too powerful. I also really enjoyed the passion fruit juice it was very tart and added an additional dimension of flavour and comfort. Pull up immediately, I know you can buy 10 banh mhis for the same price but this is definitely worth it

I have come to this place a few times over the last decade or so. It is great to see that they have done well and prospered They are best know for their name sake, Cha Ca, a kind of sizzling pan with marinated fish fillets with dill and spring onion. I’d say that they have kept up the quality of the dish and have honed their operation to such a degree that you don’t have to wait long despite the huge number of diners The atmosphere has dropped a bit simply because it has become so popular. Won’t hold it against them, though

They only serve set menu, mudfish and spring rolls. It look simple but taste extremely delicious and unique. Everything compliments each other. Will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone visiting Hanoi. Their passion fruit is surprisingly refreshing and good. Their price is set per head, that’s why you can see solo traveller or couples or big group of tourist eating in this restaurant.
