The Best Restaurants to Try in Del Mar, California | Eater San Diego

"Close to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Cucina Enoteca Del Bar is a bustling restaurant from the Cucina restaurant collective that combines Italian flavors with the hyper-seasonality of Southern California. Many of the dishes are served family style here. Popular plates include the sweet pea cappelletti and ricotta, and half chicken fra Diavolo. Be sure to try starters like the fried stuffed squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and topped with pistou and orange blossom honey, as well as Cucine meatballs over mascarpone polenta. The $40 combination deal includes a bottle of the week’s featured red or white wine plus a choice of pepperoni or Margherita pizza. It’s also a terrific spot for a weekday happy hour." - Helen I. Google
My salad was perfectly seasoned and delicious, while my son’s pasta was just okay. The restaurant has a romantic atmosphere and a great selection of wines. Having a reservation is definitely a good idea.

Google
Nice and spacious interior, perfect for large groups, gets a little noisy .... Amazing selection of wines. Service was excellent, food was very good, not a typical Italian restaurant. It was worth trying it out

Google
Beautiful atmosphere, food, and great selection of wines. Will definitely come back if I get to travel again.

Google
Great atmosphere and vibe with a wide range of wine selections. Quite spacious with good interior designs and suitable for large groups as well. Food was decent enough, but Clam Linguini that I got was a bit unexpected flavor.

Google
We've always enjoyed our experience here, their food is very delicious, there's not just one dish to name, everything is done well. We enjoyed their melted Feta and tomato appetizer so much we ordered again as part of our dinner, after appetizer round. I will say that the server we had wasn't as attentive as others, but that's not a knock on the establishment as it was the actual server. Their wine selection is amazing and the bar area and community hi top tables are a fun place to sit and enjoy your lunch or dinner. Definitely returning.

Google
Fennel sausage pizza was a flop - sent the first one back, burnt/charred under carriage, doughy crust, no crisp, and saucy mess. The redo was slightly less burnt on one side and I managed to eat half. The octopus entree, bucatini pasta dish, fennel salad and my burger that I donated to my son (while I waited 15+ minutes redo) were very very good. This was the worst pizza I have in a long long time. Coming off the heals of a trip to Portland earlier in the week and having eaten at Ken’s Artisan Pizza which was amazing (placed 18 in the world last year) I would say they should send the cooks to some training.

Perception

Google
As an Italian, it's hard for me to find Italian restaurants that meet my expectations, this is by far one of my favorites in San Diego. Smells like Nonna's cooking.

Google
CUCINA enoteca Del Mar is known for combining the flavors of Italy with the organic freshness of So Cal. With CUCINA’s from-scratch menus — standouts include shareable portions of luxurious house made pasta + innovative pizza + cleverly crafted large plates + an elevated selection of antipasto + dolci. The interior design held my interest for quite some time. They add a 4% surcharge on each check to cover additional costs and keeping the chefs happy I guess. Don't take me word for the reasoning. Ohh Meatballs make people smile, the Tiramisu was a bonus, and I tried their Rigatoni (a few bites from a friend's order and I've never had it like that but it was delish!)

Yelp
Great ambiance, especially since it's not overly packed on a Tuesday. They have a good assortment of happy hour apps. Everything was good including the service. Check out my pics of the food! Deserts are a must!!

Yelp
We ordered the short rib malfadine and rigatoni bolognese. Both came out very quickly and were delicious. I loved the pasta shape of the malfadine, and the short rib was very soft. I don't usually like bolognese but this had a citrus flavor and was delightful (maybe even better than the short rib pasta) with pockets of ricotta. Definitely recommend trying it if you are in the mood for some fancy pasta. They also had a prix-fixe menu special for Christmas which I wish I could try (but it is ending soon). Hopefully I can try one of their other set courses in the future. Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was totally empty. Happy Hours are only on certain days.

Yelp
Superb! With a feel of walking into a food kitchen market and seated in the main dining room that's bright and welcoming space. The tables made us feel like seating at an elevated farm to setting. Service was so well done that we didn't think they were there but they were. Thinking about the grilled octopus still brings back fond memories of the char, roasted flavors. Amazing. Burrata was sumptuous. Meatballs can't say anything bad. For mains, the short rib mafaldine was divine from the richness, seasoning without overwhelming and makes me take my time to appreciate all the flavors. The clam linguine was perfect but I'll have some more short rib please! Enjoy!!

Yelp
My sisters baby daddy bought us a gift certificate for this restaurant. I had never heard of it, we had an early seating and the first thing that struck me is how cool the space looked. My parents are Mormon, so we didn't drink, but it looked like they had an amazing wine list. We ordered two pizzas and a kids pizza for my niece (the kids pizza was just as big as the normal pizza). Everything was amazing. We also got the rigatoni and the bucatini - both were great as well. Would definitely come back

Yelp
Went there to celebrate Mother's Day. It was really good experience. Food quality and quantity was perfect and service was really fast and host gave us enough time to explain about the food in detail. Pasta is must try and pizza is the best I have ever had, thin crust with full of flavors. I would recommend this place and would definitely revisit whenever I get chance.
google avatar

Seetha G.

Yelp
I visited this place with my girlfriends and our respective kiddos for a pre-Mothers Day celebration and was absolutely blown away by the experience. Our server, Anais was simply amazing - providing great recommendations when it came to drinks, very patient with all the kiddos taking their time to order and checking in on us every now and then to ensure we were never without food or drink. We tried a variety of appetizers - the roasted tomato focaccia, the burrata w/tomatoes and olives, fried squash blossom, cucina meatballs and truffle herb parmesan fries. For our entrees we had a few orders each of the artichoke and spinach ravioli, bucatini amatriciana, short rib mafaldine, chicken milanese and fennel sausage pizza. And to wrap up- we tried the chocolate budino (my fav) , the basque style cheesecake, the tiramisu and gelato.

Yelp
Inside an upscale shopping plaza with a Whole Foods and boutique style stores, this small restaurant chain mixes a funky design aesthetic with a fun, lively atmosphere as well as a wine shop where you can find interesting wines of the world. Bonus on buying retail and drinking on premise. Very friendly staff - many came to say hello. We visited during happy hour which offers some discounts on wines, drinks and a few menu items. Meatballs - nice. Served over polenta with marscapone which was rich and creamy Chopped salad - under seasoned, could have used a bit more ooomph. Mussels - nice broth, well grilled bread to accompany. We enjoyed the people watching and the hospitality. Will be back to try wines and some of the entree items!

Yelp
This spot really sets the bar for ambiance :) I loved it! And I loved the wine cellar aspect when you walk in, very cool. The food was delicious, we split the grilled octopus starter and I had clam linguine for my main. The staff was super friendly, and of course the wine options were endless. Would definitely recommend as a date night spot or to catch up with a friend!

Lisa W.

Yelp
My husband and I came early to meet up some friends for birthday dinner. We love this location over the Irvine location for these reasons: 1. Easy parking 2. Intimate setting 3. Excellent service 4. Selection of wine Would definitely make the drive to Del Mar over the Irvine and we are commuting from LA

Yelp
Overall 3.5/5 tempura fried stuffed squash blossom (3/5) - very crispy, but needed more pistou to balance out the tangy goat cheese. cucina meatballs (5/5) - DELICIOUS! Meatballs were tender, moist, perfectly seasoned, and the tomato sauce was savory and not overly acidic. clam linguini (2/5) - Too acidic and couldn't taste any tarragon. Also, too much broth/sauce for the amount of pasta. We ordered some focaccia to soak up the remaining sauce but were still left with at least a cup. pear spice cake (3/5) - great flavor, not too sweet, but the pears were a little bland and should be more tender or thinner to make the dish easier to eat. Service was great but a little over attentive for my taste. I don't want my water glass refilled after only taking a single sip. Overall this is a solid restaurant. We probably go once a year. I wish the food was just a little better because it's a beautiful restaurant and close to our house. The dishes just need minor tweaks to the seasoning to go from good to great.
google avatar

Yelp
The menu is always changing, but good haul from this takeout! I got the mushroom pizza, which is very delicious and good for two meals... And their new smoked salmon dip! Big pieces of fresh smoked salmon, a salmon purée, and a bunch of flatbread crackers to eat it with very delicious meal! I wish more restaurants would do taramasalata style appetizers. Pacific social had a delicious one on briefly and then removed it. I hope Urban Kitchen keeps this one here, presumably borrowed from the Gold Finch menu since it's more a Jewish than an Italian dish. The only thing I would change is a little more dill and a little more seasoning. But it was a great value and I'm dividing it over three meals!

Yelp
I came here for a catered group outing. We took pasta making classes, cocktail making classes, and charcuterie board making classes. Afterwards, we were treated to an assortment of salads, pizza, and pasta. The food, especially the pasta, was some of the best that I've had in a very long time.

Yelp
I came here with a few friends for an early dinner. It had been a while since I last dined here so I was exited to try it again. Sad to say, nothing I had was great. To start we ordered the squash blossoms and focaccia. Both were standard but the focaccia had more flavor than anything else that was ordered. The Italian chopped salad was lacking flavor, I felt like the dressing was just lemon and olive oil. There was nothing special to it and it bordered bland. For my main dish I ordered the bucatini Amitricana and it was not great. Overly salty, sauce was lacking flavor. Traditionally it should have been made with pork belly but this tasted like pork cheek (no big deal). The pork was burnt to a crisp, each piece I had tasted like charcoal. Wine selection was fine. I think for the price point they offer everything should be great but it was severely lacking. Waiters were fine. I ordered the bucatini without an egg and it ended up coming with one. Not a huge deal except the up charge was 3 dollars. I am giving two stars because their desserts were good. Tiramisu was made well and had great flavor. Overall I have had way better Italian around the area. I think the food needs some work. Maybe the pizzas are better? I don't know.

Yelp
We had a nice dinner on a whim while visitng the area. The interior so very nice but open which makes it very loud. The food was really good, but not excellent. The service was wonderful and our server went above and beyond. Overall, we were very happy with our dinner choice.

Yelp
Went to this place for valentines and had a nice dining experience! Focaccia was the star of the night, my friend and i love bread so we rate it a 9/10 My friend rated their pasta a 7.5/10 (a short rib pasta) I got an eggplant based pasta i will also rate it a 7.5/10 Our wines were different but mine was so yummy and worth the price, my friend didn't enjoy theirs as much but the wine selection was very nice to see! Overall the experience was good, the ambiance was also nicely lit and service was great and detailed. I would say it's keeping itself from a 5 because it just didn't feel comfortable? Maybe it was a mix of the seating and the atmosphere? But definitely a good place for a date night !

Yelp
Came here for a friend's birthday, and it was perfect! Ambiance and service both matched our energy for the birthday girl. We did a family style dinner with: - Family Portioned Rigatoni Bolognese (5/5): so worth, portions were massive, pasta was cooked perfectly - Short Rib Pappardelle (4/5): wish there was a little more flavor but we also shared a normal sized portion worth 6 people so I didn't get the full experience - Octopus appetizer (5/5): yum! get this for sure, octopus wasn't rubbery and the beans had so much flavor

Yelp
My friends and I came to have dinner on Friday night. A sweet lady at the front offered to seat us immediately, but said the table had a reservation in an hour and a half, so we happily agreed! However, on multiple occasions throughout our dinner, waiters made constant laps around our table and awkwardly paused in front of us, didn't say anything, and proceeded to walk away. Not only that, but they took our plates away as we were actively eating our dinner. We still had a good 40 minutes before we leave, and the sweet lady in the front instructed us that we didn't have to leave yet. An old man, who worked where, hovered over our table and looked at us for a few seconds before leaving, constantly pressuring us to leave. This is extremely rude and saddening for a well established respect. Not an enjoyable dinner
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
I thought the food was good, had salmon. But others at the table had pizza and the sauce was very sugary. Good service and will definitely come again and try something else on the menu.
google avatar

Lance C.

Yelp
Took my partner here for a birthday surprise group dinner. Great service, food was delicious and served quickly. Spencer was our waiter and he was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and quickly catered to our every need. Atmosphere was lively but not disruptive. Highly recommend this place to couples and groups.
google avatar

Yelp
Word of mouth got us here and we're so glad! What a gorgeous place near the polo and soccer fields. Love the equestrian/wino vibe. It's gorgeous inside. Kids can make their own pizza! How badass is that?! I had the burger and it was absolutely divine. Tried the pepperoni pizza with hot honey and wow, so good. They have a great non-alcoholic beer that I hadn't tried before. Awesome. Our server was lovely. We'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
The food and service were terrific. Loved the cauliflower appetizer. Thought I'd enjoy the squash blossoms app more than I did, but not bad. The chopped salad and pasta bolognese were both terrific. I think our waiter encouraged us to order one dish too many, and I was a little peeved that the default tip calculations start at 20% and go up to 24% (wow, that's presumptuous). But service was excellent - our waiter noted that we just wanted to chit chat and didn't disturb. You've got to love the convenient flower hill parking lot, too, right off the freeway.

Yelp
We've been here twice for birthday celebrations and absolutely love the restaurant. Food, staff, location, and ambiance is just stellar.

Yelp
Staff were very helpful at this romantic yet family friendly restaurant. Prices and portions are fair. Food is yummy. Great place for groups. Parking is provided.

Yelp
Cucina Enoteca was delicious! We went to Enoteca to celebrate my birthday last month and it did not disappoint. We sat in a corner booth.. with cute cushions and big glass windows. The chandeliers, light fixtures, and decor made the space elevated, unique, and appealing. Our server was attentive and kind. The house made focaccia was WONDERFUL. Don't visit this restaurant without ordering this wonderful appetizer/side. I don't have a photo because we may have ate it too fast.. Ha! The French 75 was a delight as well.

Susan B.

Yelp
I live near by but have never been here before tonight .. my friend and I met here for happy hour . We were both so impressed with the ambiance .. the fun decor and the staff and the food !! We ordered the pizza and wine of the week special.. the margarita pizza was amazing and the wine was suburb! The wine we ordered was the Treana Sauvignon Blanc ... oh so delicious ! We truly enjoyed everything about our experience this evening ....and will be back again ! We will recommend this place to all of our friends !
google avatar

Chaudhry A.

Yelp
Only if it could be passed on to the staff. The chefs in the backend cooking the good stuff. The staff at the frontend taking care of endless demands or requests of the seated ones. To top off a nice day, this is to be at .. cool place and delicious food. If you don't find parking, you will!
google avatar

Hiral S.

Yelp
I am really sad to give this place a 3 star review because it has been my go to place for several years. The service was complete miss on a Tuesday evening. Wrong items came to the table, there was confusion on what was ordered, salads were swapped out because they realized the wrong one was delivered and one of my friends entree was served even before the appetizer. The food was just ok - a friend ordered bucatini with egg and the egg was clearly undercooked. It was very disappointing and not sure if management has changed but they really need to step up their game.
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
The night started out really well as our food choices were being brought out. However quality of food started going downhill after the appetizers. Highly recommend the Octopus, it was delicious. Truffle Parmesan fries were also good. However the Short Rib Pappardelle needed more noodles for the massive amount of meat they pile on. The carrots were also undercooked, as they were still hard. Can skip the tiramisu, the cake layer wasn't soaked enough, kind of dry ... The atmosphere and service makes up for the food. Our waitress was really friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Natasha P.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate a birthday and impressed! Ordered a variety of items--poke appetizer, truffle fries, pepperoni pizza, fig pizza, brussel sprouts, short rib pasta, and seafood pasta. Drinks were good, the food tasted amazing. I especially liked the apps and pizza. Excellent service and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Maricris H.

Yelp
Sad to have to give them a low review since I used to consider Cucina Enoteca one of my fave Italian restaurants in the area. We came on an early Tuesday evening at 5:30pm, but they were already out of two menu items we wanted. It also seems like the franchise underwent major menu changes that unfortunately altered or removed some of our favorite go-to items. The short rib pappardelle (our former favorite and why we made this reservation) has been replaced by a short rib mafaldine. We were not the hugest fans of the new pasta and change in ingredients. We missed the mushrooms and carrots that the original recipe included and felt that the switch to cherry tomatoes and kale was lackluster. Our favorite items of the night were the fried squash blossoms and the goat cheese caramelle! Definitely worth giving these a try! Loved the corn purée with the pasta. However, we were also disappointed to see the reduced portion size as our blossom plate only came with two pieces. For dessert, we got the tiramisu, which was good, but a bit dry for our liking. Fortunately, the service is still amazing and the ambiance is great for date nights and family dinners! All of our items came out super quick and the servers were very attentive. Sadly, there were just too many disappointments with the menu that night to give them a higher review this time.

Yelp
Delicious dinner and lovely atmosphere! The pastas were all phenomenal and we loved our starters too.

Yelp
A charming Italian restaurant that stands out with its inviting atmosphere and a solid happy hour. The quality of the food is above average, making it a great spot for a relaxed dining experience.
google avatar

Lin C.

Yelp
Terrible service. I mean the waiter was extremely friendly and nice when he was around...but he never checked on the table after we got our order. Had to ask someone else to get boxes. Came once for dessert and that was it. Took forever to get the check, and checked on everyone around us, but our table. Food was good, a little too salty for me. Probably won't come back.

Yelp
Great ambiance, solid food, perfect service. Enjoyed a dinner with friends on a busy Friday! Will be back again soon.

Yelp
I was absolutely blown away with our visit last week. It was my birthday and the staff was really on top of requests and notes. Great job to the Hosts! We just love it here. Such a cute place and blend. Perfect for dates or families or big groups...Upscale or casual. The menu has tons to offer. Both vegan and meat eaters alike. You can't go wrong with pizza. Ammiright ? Tons of free convenient parking in the lot. Also love the bathroom wall of notes :) IYKYK

Yelp
How can I explain this place ??????? Ok perfect example. You ask your wife where she wants to go she says she found this place on instagram. You go and regret every moment of this place. Pretentious and overpriced!!! Seriously one of the biggest waste of time and money ever
google avatar

Allegra C.

Yelp
The Negroni's are really good. But the food was very mediocre. We ordered the chicken Milanese it was a total disappointment. It was bland, dry, and under seasoned it was served with a basic artichoke and spinach salad alongside. We also ordered bucatini amatriciana and the pasta was overcooked and gummy. The only good were the stuffed squash blossoms which had a light crisp batter that was fried golden and surrounded a rich cheese filling. Service was pleasant but slow. Ambiance is relaxed and comfortable. I'd go back for cocktails and squash blossoms and go for dinner at nearby flower child instead.

Yelp
outstanding service and food was great! High end drinks were great! Portions are huge too as well as the appetizers well worth the money

Yelp
This is one of my family's favorite Italian fusion restaurant around their home. Apparently, it's quite difficult to get same day reservations but luckily, they had a community seating area where it's first come, first serve. We were able to get a seat at the community area. It's located next to the Mobil gas station in the Flower Hill Promenade on Via De La Valle. There's a parking lot with ample stalls but could be very difficult to find on dinner rush hours. I luckily was able to score a stall right in front of the restaurant (around 4 stalls right in front). My family and I ordered appetizers to share and ordered an entrée for ourselves. We got the Giant Meatball, Chef's Whim Ragu + Mascarpone Polenta Board, Octopus, and Fried Squash Blossoms as appetizers to share. They were all really good, especially the octopus. The octopus was perfectly cooked and deliciously seasoned. The ragu and mascarpone polenta board was also suuuper good. The creaminess of the mascarpone polenta was so rich and delicious that I was very impressed by it! It almost had a mashed potato consistency. The other two were alright; not very memorable. I got their Shrimp + Clam + Squid Ink Linguine as an entrée, and I loved it! The squid ink pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente with quite a lot of clams and shrimps. The flavor of the saffron broth, which was very unique, was perfect without too much saltiness to it either. My relatives got the Mushroom & Goat Cheese pizza (without the goat cheese as my aunt didn't like them LOL BUT the pizza was AH-MAZING! SO much flavor from just the mushrooms, can't imagine how much better it was with the goat cheese), Short Rib Pappardelle (saltier than I liked but good; didn't give much of an impression to me), and Rigatoni Bologneses pasta (didn't try). Overall, this restaurant was very good. It had a lot of interesting choices which were exceeded my expectations. Would love to come back again in the future if I'm ever in the area!

Yelp
Started out real well until our service fizzled second half of our dinner. Interior was pleasantly stately and comfortable. Our service the first half was great and quick with each dish coming out promptly. Some dishes were delicious and others were misses. Pastas, pizza, truffle fries were good but apps were ok. This version of their burrata was a miss but grilled octopus was amazing. Then our server completely disappeared and dinner rolled to a halt. But we made it through the meal. Overall not too bad but would not travel out of your way to this location unless it's a convenient distance for you.

Yelp
Great service and great ambiance. Very warm tone to the restaurant. Its dark but not too dark. Server was great with recommendations and made it right celebrating a birthday with a wonderful dessert at the end. Id highly recommend 2 drinks. 1. The cardigan - pear liquor with bourbon & lemon 2. Rosa Cosa - very fruity and delicious I did this the squid ink pasta. The highlight though was the hot sauce. The hot sauce was SO good I bought a whole container to-go. WORTH IT. It goes well with any protein or even cauliflower.

Cindy M.

Yelp
Food and Service What we can say is a HUGE negative is the acoustics while dining is horrific SO SO very loud we cannot hear each other across the table
google avatar

Anna Z.

Yelp
Was craving for Italian and decided to order DoorDash from this location, now I can't wait to dine in! I ordered the short rib pappardelle and it was delicious. The noodle was perfectly al dente and super fresh. Short rib was good, however the portion was very small, I think I had 2 bites of meat. Will request for extra short rib with my dish next time. Chicken liver pâté- very unique taste compared to other pates I've had, it comes with caramelized onion and tastes sweet. Not my palate Would like to dine in for the future and try more things!

Yelp
Probably one of the best restaurants in Del Mar. I know everyone goes to Del Mar for like the views and anything they are not by the coast with a view- they have amazing food and service. We came here with a large group of probably about 15 to 20 people for a work dinner and the food was super good. With a big party like this, you do have to pick a prefix menu but the prefix menu is legit and is actually family style - shared. We had a lot of food that we ordered and wine was flowing through the tables by their amazing staff. The short rib pappardelle is a must. You just have to order this because it's one of their specialties. The short rib itself was super tender and they provide such a generous amount. Their ribeye was also amazing, cooked perfectly and their specialty salad was delicious. Overall this is an amazing restaurant. The food is amazing, the staff is amazing, and most importantly the environment and vibe is just so nice. Definitely a great place to celebrate a birthday or to celebrate anything or even a fancy date night. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Menu is out of this world! So many selections to choose from - something for every appetite! The bar staff, Israel, Taylor and Amer, very attentive and so professional! Fun atmosphere, lively crowd and excellent menu! And...a great place to people watch!

Yelp
An absolute vibe. Had the pleasure of being seated in Tommy's section. I'm not great at ordering Italian so I really appreciated that he took the time to help me find a dish based on other foods I like. And he even allowed my friend to order the chicken tenders! Tommy then recommended a a few different wines for the table which was another win as we usually prefer beer. But today I was graced with a fine Pinot Noir that I will be taking with me to every dinner party to show off my new sommelier skills In sum, the Rigatoni was fire. The service was exceptional (thanks Tommy!). And the wine was exceptional. The bartender is also ridiculously attractive so that's a plus. 12/10; do recommend.

Yelp
Main takeaways: Great service and good quality food but a little expensive My husband and I ordered focaccia bread to start, each ordered our own pasta plate, and split the tiramisu. Everything was delicious! -The focaccia was a little softer than traditional focaccia, very cake-like. -I ordered the crab linguine, it was good but not a show stopper. The tiramisu is a must try! The hazelnuts throughout were so unique and so so good! We have lived in the area for 5 years and haven't gone here until recently. It's a busy shopping center and a little pricey but after our experience recently, I will be coming back to try out their happy hour.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, good food, and good service. The only problem is parking. The restaurant is inside a shopping center which is pretty busy.

Yelp
Service very good. Wine pours very small. Pasta was terrible. Under cooked and salty. Would never go back.
